A good thing there will be no inquiry as it will just be a stick to beat the Thatcher government.

Not my thoughts but those of Norman Tebbitt, Trade secretary at the time.

I feel for Amber Rudge in having to make this 'difficult decision'.

I dare say some will cry 'cover up'.

I wonder why.

A family tree

Does anyone have advice on good websites to start a family tree? Ideally I am looking for a free site to get started. If i get into it 'd be willing to pay for a more comprehensive site in a few months. The BBC has a guide but they suggest a pen and paper format, I'd prefer something online that would be easier to share with my family.

Sorry if there is another thread about this, I couldn't find one.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Burnley (away)

dimanche 30 octobre 2016

Can we please play our best XI of those who are fit?

-----------------Mandanda-------------------
Ward------Dann------------Tomkins-----Kelly
-----------Cabaye----------Puncheon---------
Townsend--------McArthur-------------Zaha
-------------------Benteke----------------------

1) Jimmy continues in No10 role. He's superb at pressing and his goal scoring exploits have not gone unnoticed as far as I am concerned.

2) Switch Wilf and Townsend. I think Andros is so much better on the right. Zaha, who is currently playing out of his skin, can transfer that ability into goals if he plays on the left.

3) puncheon to control the game from quarterback position.

Does the atmosphere at Selhurst benefit the away team?

Seems it does little to inspire the home team despite their statements to the contrary – familiarity breeds contempt? The away fans seem to find a voice they don’t have at other away grounds, and I’m sure the away team players, far from being intimidated, are motivated by playing in a ground with an atmosphere rather than a library.

From what I see, a lot of teams really seem to play their best football at Palace, and very rarely teams appear flat (apart from Stoke maybe).

Thoughts?

Should we switch to a back 3?

Watching how defensively poor we were yesterday and noticing how Chelsea are utilizing Victor Moses as a wing back it occurred to me that we might do the same thing at Palace.

Maybe even playing Townsend and Chungy as wing backs and giving Wilf a free role.

We could play this team

Mandanda

Damo
Dann
Tomkin s

Townsend
Mac
Punch
Cabaye
chungy

Wilf

Benteke

Isil kill teenager in Hamburg

ISIL claimed responsibility for a "lone wolf" knife attack in Hamburg on October 16 which left a teenager dead, the Isil-affiliated news agency Amaq reported.

The jihadist group claimed the act of terrorism was in response to its calls to target civilians of coalition countries involved in Iraq and Syria airstrikes.

Sack {insert new managers name here} now!!!

I can't believe how badly {Insert New Managers name here} has us playing. We have even dropped down to 12th place in the league now.

{Insert New Managers name here} out!!!

Just starting this thread as a placeholder for the next manager

Amazon Echo & Dot

I got one of these over the weekend. I have been far more impressed that I thought I was going to be. My Son has the Echo but as I already have a decent bluetooth speaker, I picked up a Dot. I recon the Dot is great value at £50 and the Echo expensive at £150, as all you get is a bigger speaker. First impressions are really good. The key is the app on the phone that helps with set up and bridges that voice only command problem, that I thought I was going to be faced with. It also is getting better all the time at recognising my voice and accuracy is improving.
I've got my morning alarm set up, morning news briefings, radio stations, playlists in Prime, Hue lights switching on and off. Audible books running which is neat as I can mix between the books in the car and now play at home from where I left off. Anyone else got one and found any of the skills useful?

Sack or back.....

samedi 29 octobre 2016

As someone who welcomed Super Al as a Palace Hero and good manager, by the end of last season I'd had enough....and this season has not changed my view that the fans of his previous clubs were right about Alan.....time to go?
I expect crap but this is why the BBS exists.......:frown:

Coutinho's shin pads

Bizarre as it may seem, Coutinho ought not have been allowed to remain on the pitch without his shin pads... having lost his right shin pad in contact early in the second half, he later retrieved it. Rather than popping it back in his sock, he chose to put it down the front of his shorts, and so played a large portion of the match with out the prescribed equipment. The officials didn't notice the missing shin pad, but should have asked him to leave the field of play to rectify this wardrobe malfunction ... hardly worth a post match review, but although he had sufficient time to address this or 'redress', didn't appear to do so before his late substitution!

What we need

We need better tactics.

We need a game plan - at the moment there is no plan B. Every game the team sets up and plays the same.

We need more togetherness and appreciation - only Joel Ward applauded fans at the end. Benteke wouldn't even sign autographs for kids before the game. There is a massive disconnect at the moment.

We need to go back to basics. If we keep playing this system we are going down.

We need to give youth a chance.

We need a reality check. 3 wins this season (against rock bottom Sunderland, Stoke and Boro - all of whom were struggling big time when we played them).

New Manager

For me personally, I would keep pardew, would back him 100%. Not sure if any of you have worked in a job where you are undermined, it really knocks your confidence and you can lose credibility with your team. With that in mind it must be tough in a football managers position.

Having said that, because of the current state of football and the constant badgering from our own fans, it is only a matter of time before Pardew is gone.

I would like to know from those who want pardew out, which available or obtainable manager would you replace him with?

Beneteke v Bolasie ?

I can't believe we sold a once in decade player like Bolasie to buy Beneteke .

Madness !!!

Townsend

He hasn't been very good so far let's be honest and now -

Pardew: [Townsend] came to see me. He wants to play on the right-hand side. But Wilf was great on the right [against Leicester]

I said on the transfer thread that I had relatively good info he was moody.. seems like instead of knuckling down and proving himself on left is now demanding right wing.

I'M WALKING IN MURRAY'S WONDERLAND

Oh my god i love Glenn Murray. What a day i'm buzzing.

See you lot next season. Mark my words.

Ward

So.....how badly does he have to play before we have an honest conversation about replacing him?

Marriner = Clattenburg

Was it just me but we played against 12 today. He missed a clear pen on Wilf at 2-3 then they scored straight afterwards. Some of their fouls earned were laughable. We got nothing and gifted them 2 set piece goals in the first half.

Every home game start as the away side

Bar the Stoke game why can't Pardew stir the players up instead of sitting back doing nothing for 20/30 minutes until we to one down? Every bloody home game. He has the knack at half time but too late.

Collectively, was that our worst back 4 performance

All four defenders were abysmal today. I'll give Dann the benefit of the doubt as he's been out for ages but it was like a Sunday league side defensively.

It was so bad, especially from set pieces it was almost comical

And having to get up at 2:30am on a Sunday morning to watch it live is almost an insult ;)

football violence

Wenger says its not a problem. I'm not so sure, whilst I haven't had any bad experiences in recent years I did click into you tube to amuse myself at whu v chelsea and was drawn to other videos in the side bar not least a horrid sketch of a middlesbrough lad being knocked about by neanderthals and various scraps between sunderland and newcastle and i begin to wonder if I've merely been lucky or discerning?

labyrinthitis

I've got this at the moment, it's inflammation of the inner ear which causes balance problems, vertigo. The doctor didn't say and i've googled timescales, but has anyone on here had this and how long does it last?

Feels like i'm on a really rough boat when i stand up,i need to get back to work and of course the match tomorrow.cheers for any help.

Andrew Wakefield

All,

Very sad news reaching us last night of the passing of another dear friend Andrew Wakefield. Andrew sat the row and seat in front of me in the main stand and will be sadly missed. Andrew was a Reverend and has overseen many many Palace fans funerals over the years including our dear friend Peter Bonthrone recently.

RIP Andrew.

This is great to see that the club have finally taken action on this. Will be interesting to see if we have 2 people fighting for 1 seat on Saturday! Hopefully more will be identified and allow genuine fans to attend. I also wonder if this might help anyone out on the season ticket waiting list as I bet some of these 1,000 tickets were ST's

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Paypal / Credit Card query

Hello chaps and chapesses,

Just a question really as I don't know the answer... I bought something on Ebay a while back. Turns out the company didn't receive enough stock to fulfill my order. After chasing them they have issued a refund. What I forgot was that I paid using my credit card through PayPal. Where my question really comes from is that my Credit card has Zero balance, and the refund has been issued to my credit card, so what happens to my money?

Original Ipad Air - odd thing

mercredi 26 octobre 2016

Hi

Had this since it was released way back and I was using it offline all fine and dandy. All of a sudden the screen goes black and then white and prompts me for my activation password and I noticed that the wifi had now turned on. It was also saying something weird like I needed to go through wifi setup.

All a bit odd and having had a friend with a scam problem earlier in the day I thought I would tread carefully just in case it was a dodgy app hack displaying rogue screens. I couldn't get out of it at all and so powered down. I powered it up and with wifi on only to be back in that screen again and assumed that has to be legit (hopefully).

It seemed to prompt me for the details/password for both icloud and for the itunes store.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Why would I be prompted for activation all of a sudden and in such a dramatic way? I was on 10.0.2 and am just about to upgrade the latest dot release 10.2 just in case but seems unlikely and there is no reference to an activation bug fix.

Other info - I am at home - i.e. not at strange location.

Flying High - Issue 9 - On sale v Liverpool

It has been a year since the last issue (broken legs, moving house and new jobs between a few of us) but Flying High is back with Issue 9 this weekend. Plenty has happened in the last 12 months so there was lots for us to get our teeth into.

Priced at the usual £1.50, there will be sellers around the ground before the game this Saturday (October 29th) for the match against Liverpool. We will be selling from 4.15pm and may well have copies in a couple of the pubs in the vicinity, so make sure you find one of us and get your copy.

Here’s what is between the covers:
  • Moneybags FC – We’re not used to spending £27m on one player, so should it make us uncomfortable or should we just enjoy the ride?
  • We love Wilf – Rumours that he was off on Transfer Deadline Day sent shivers down our spine, we look at why he is such an important player for us.
  • Steeeeeeeve – We all love him already, but there’s more to Mandanda than just chanting his name, we discuss why he can help shape the team.
  • Never Forget – Most of the promotion team are out of the team or have left the club, but we need to treat their exits with the respect they all deserve.
  • Academy Clampdown – Being in the Premier League means less chances for our Academy players, should we be blooding more kids or is it impossible at this level?
We also have the usual gripes in Dave’s Moans, a mid-90s Sh*t List entry, some dubiously “discovered” marketing minutes and some sensational photos from Michael Hulf.

Double Din Car Stereo

I've got room in my van for one of these (I think). My stereo's sh!t, the sat nav's just packed up and my hands free is too quiet. I'm thinking of getting this To view the link you have to Register or Login because it's got decent reviews and it's cheap:).

Has anyone installed something similar or have any tips?

It also features RDS Radio, which after a brief check seems to allow fm to play digital stations. If I'm going to get something this, er, functional, I think I'd want 5-live/6 music and talk sport :o. Not certain how/if this system works, so interested if anyone else has it and if it's any good. Thanks.

Bobby Vee - RIP

Loved this guy's stuff, as he was a contemporary of Buddy Holly and stood in for him at a gig, after he was killed in a plane crash.

The "Night has a Thousand Eyes" and "Rubber Ball" are the two notable hits in the UK back in the early 1960s.

He toured the UK on many occasions in the last twenty years along with other iconic (but ageing) artists of his time.

A rare opportunity to watch a live game from the third tier this evening as The Mighty Shakers [Bury FC] take on serial underachievers Bolton in this First Division clash.

Discussion: Right backs and Left backs

I've been saying it for months. It now seems almost universally accepted that we need upgrades in these positions. Any ideas? I'll start:

Left back: Amavi, Gibbs, Charlie Taylor
Right back: Flanagan, Jenkinson, Trippier, Chambers

Suggested Team and Formation For: Liverpool (home)

-----------------------Mandanda-------------------------------
Ward----------Dann---------------Delaney----------Kelly
--------------Cabaye-------------Puncheon-------------------
-----------------------Mccarthur-------------------------------
-------Townsend-------------------------------Zaha-----------
-----------------------Benteke----------------------------------

Subs:

Hennessey
Tomkins
Ledley
CYL
Sako
Wickham
Campbell

I'd play Delaney over Tomkins because there's not much between DD and JT and at least Delaney/Dann are proven as a partnership, especially with Damo being naturally left sided. Also the Delaney diagonal will be needed.

If we try to play passing football out from the back they will destroy us with their high press. We need to launch it to Benteke and get close to him to win the knock downs. If we can do that and the wingers can win some corners/free-kicks we can score from a set-piece and nick it.

Structural Engineers/Roofers required

Hey,

Is any-one on here a Structural Engineer, or know of one they would recommend?

I have tried around 4 different local firms, and all are too busy to want more work!

We have an issue in the loft, whereby the ceilings been lowered, and joists cut half way. As well as this I think a Strut has been removed as the roof is sagging.
This is just the start of the problems in the house, and I believe a load bearing wall has been removed, and not adequately re-supported.

I have attached a photo in case anyone knows what they are looking at!

Thanks :p

Palace fans in Africa or South America

dimanche 23 octobre 2016

Hi guys,

I'm after a favour. I've recently been doing a project on following Palace from abroad. I have plenty of links to Palace fans in Oz, Asia, Eastern Europe and the States. I was wondering if there are any Eagles out there who live in Africa or South America (or have previously) who could give me a few comments about what its like to follow Palace from your far-away corner of the globe?

Thanks in advance!

Facts and Stats

The Observer and Guardian both provide snippets of information following the weekend games so I thought I would post items relevant to our games or mentioning Palace:

Leicester are now 20 home matches unbeaten in the top flight since September last year, the best streak since Chelsea's 21 game run, which ended in September last year.

The run sctually finished in August when we beat them 2-1.

Middlesbrough kept their first top-flight clearance sheet in London since a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace in April 2005 - going 23 games without one.

Palace have conceded in their last 15 top-flight away games, their longest run on the road in The Premier League without a clean sheet.

Most shots (in Saturday's games) Yohan Cabaye with 8.

Rough day for Sky's Paul Merson having to cope with pronouncing both Steve Mandanda and Islam Slimani in one match. He gave up on the latter and settled for Salami.

Flowers at horley station

At Horley station there are bouquets of flowers and a palace top and scarves. Anyone know what happened?

RIP Jimmy Perry

Just announced Jimmy Perry has passed. He gave us so much laughter along with David Croft. RIP

Suggestion: Ezri Konsa

Charlton centre back. 19 years old very highly rated by them. Charlton fans say he is a bigger prospect then Joe Gomez who went to Liverpool last summer. Worth a look, especially with Delaney getting on a bit.

Brrrrrrr - is it starting to get quite chilly? Have you turned your heating on yet?

Yes, folks, there is a distinct crispness in the air, with our cars all steamed up and wet, and time to fish out those gloves, scarves and woollies - will they fit you this winter?

And so looms that day when you can no longer put off Father Frost; there's no pretending the icicles around the windows are not just pretty; it's what you paid all that money for in the first place - go on, is it time to turn on the central heating once more?

Who can last longest in their long-johns, dressing gowns, mufflers, bobble hats and mittens, sipping on a glass of Mackesons and a nip of Stones Ginger Wine by the embers of a little coal grate, fanning the last few glows of warmth out of the stone-cold fireplace?

Or are you still running around in T-shirts and surfer shorts, flip-flops and baseball cap - you're no namby-pamby softy. Chill? What chill - in your freezer maybe?

Let's see who succumbs to the temptation of their creature comforts when - do post your experiences here.

Scotland finally sees sense where the docking of dogs tails is concerned

At last Scotland is going to amend their animal welfare legislation to, once again, permit the docking of working dogs tails.

The irony is the reason for their change of heart is exactly the same as the original case used to ban it in the first place, the welfare of animals.

If only they'd listened back then there wouldn't have been thousands of dogs in Scotland so badly injured they required vetinary care as a result of sentiment overruling common sense.

Tail docking of working dogs - who actually do the job they were bred for - wasn't done for looks, it was to protect the dog from likely damage. Regarding docking dogs that are no longer worked such as bulldogs, well blame that shit on those wankers at the kennel club.

Rumble in the Calais Jungle .

I just can't see this ending well .

French Police apparently up for a fight according to reports .

I think the UK should agree to take all the migrants from the jungle over the next few days to avoid any blood shed . What's another 10k migrants to the UK to avoid suffering and appalling inhuman scenes ?
After that the French need to stop another camp forming , forced removal is not the way forward for civilised Nations

Hysteria over yesterdays defeat

So yesterday Palace lost 3-1 to Leicester.

Bad result yes but with a number of positives.

Pard's is changing our style of play. We no longer sit back and catch teams on the breakaway. We take the game to teams and look for the win. The stats bare that out.

Palace had 55% of the play away from home. 23 shots (6 more than them). We had 7 on target they had 4 and scored 3!!!

Its going to take a while but we all said 'we can't keep sitting back' Plus Leicester won the title last year, and are having a great run in the Champions league. They are no mugs and we more than matched them.

Finally, 16 PL teams played yesterday. We created more chances than all of them and only Everton had more on target, we had 7 they had 8. And they lost as well!!!!!

COYP!

The next six games

3 eminently loseable home matches (Liverpool, Man City & Southampton).
3 eminently winnable away games (Burnley, Swansea & Hull).

Having helped kick start West Hams and Leicesters seasons, will we put the brakes on some others or run true to form at home? Equally will we stay top of the mini league at the bottom by continuing to get the points against the strugglers?

The misery of being a football fan

samedi 22 octobre 2016

This is not a thread moaning about Palace or today but the affect losing had on our lifes!

Losing has ruined countless days/weekends for me and I can't do anything about it even at 32! We've lost to the champions today and along with Brighton winning it has caused me to me miserable, really bloody miserable. It's also made my wife miserable and everyone I know. Every week we lose is the same. Physically I dont show the emotion as much or get as angry but I just don't want to interact. A few drinks sometimes helps.

The FA cup final ruined me, ended up in a&e after kicking a wall on the way out. I'm such a chilled out person and never let anything get to me, apart from bloody football.

I wonder how many hours I've lost to being miserable in life because of the game. Of course there are the ups and with Palace we have had a few, I wouldn't change anything for the world but it's hard.

Surely others feel the same or am I a lost case?

The Cabaye Ledley MacArthur Midfield

How many more times are we going to play this midfield and not offer any threat going forward as a result? Benteke was continually isolated again today. The same thing happened up at Sunderland where we only started to look a threat when Wickham came on. You could say the same about the Cup Final when Puncheon replaced Cabaye also and the United home game last season too. I've been slated on here before for being negative when talking about this but today was further proof that this unbalanced midfield doesn't work.

When will we get our next win?

Going to get hammered by the head in the sand brigade but thought it worth reprieving last year's thread.

Can't see anything before Watford judging by Pardew's form on turning around bad runs.

Leasehold Nightmare

20 odd years ago I had a few issues with a freeholder of a flat I "owned" at the time. High service charges and poorly defined "repairs". In the end the kids came along, we sold up and bought a house.

This was in the Guardian today and makes me feel damn lucky.

Waitrose blow - the final nail in Brexit's coffin

As if the middle classes of our endangered isles could withstand any more hammer blows after the incredibly stupid and racist Brexit vote, Waitrose have come along and kicked the rotting corpse of our country.

No more free cappucinos or lattes or Assam tea for the good citizen 'My Waitrose' card-holders - not unless you spend £5 in store on goods - not, please note, an accompanying Danish rye on cinnamon pastry.

No more free newspapers, like The Times and The Guardian, if you spend £5.00 on your shopping basket. Now it's a whopping tenner to grab a copy of the Grauniad for nowt.

No more free parking in the underground car parks (where applicable) - now you must spend no less than a tenner to park your Audi QS or Porsche Cayenne for free.

What is the bloody world coming to, I ask myself. If I had known on 23rd June that my free Waitrose lattes were going to be Brexited, I'd have voted to leave, or stay, or whatever. It's so, so, so unfair.

Tristram, get me a triple machiatto and a line-caught, fairtrade, native-poled, fresh smoked eel ciabatta, will you please. I'll give you some Euros to pay for them.

Strange or funny dreams you have had

When I was a kid I had a reoccurring dream that I was falling from a great height and just before I hit the ground I would wake up.

Another was I lived in a fairly big house in Dulwich which had 3 floors and a cellar. This demon like creature would chase me all the way from the 3rd floor to the cellar and everytime I just made it to the cellar and managed to slam the door on it.

A funny one was when about 14 I guess I had a dream where a naked Debbie Harry was in my bed urging me to get into bed with her. I was sat on the end of the bed watching a Western film and kept telling her to wait until the film finished. What makes it worse is that I've never liked bloody Westerns :wallbash:. Still pisses me off to this day

Linen suits

New random question of the day.

Surprised there's not a thread about this already. People calling for him to be sacked from MOTD and to boycott Walkers crisps and it's on the front page of a couple of toilet paper alternatives. All because he doesn't support the rhetoric being pushed by these rags the divs that support them.

Nuclear War threat: your childhood experiences

As Russian and U.S relations seem to have reverted back to the bad days of the Cold War; it's got me thinking about how many of us who grew up in the 70's and 80's, had to live under the shadow and real threat and fear of a nuclear bomb wiping us all out.

Remember clearly asking adults about it and getting back less than reassuring answers. The adults and media seemed to talk about it a lot, and of course there were the gut wrenching TV movies, 'The Day After', and the English version, 'Threads'. Not to mention public service TV ads and several documentaries where people even played out how life would be in a nuclear bunker if WW3 did break out.

Remember as a 10/11 year old being sick to my stomach catching moments of the two movies mentioned above. Honestly; these hit you harder than any horror movie you'd ever seen then or now.

I think we all went through that moment where the realisation hit us that there was this bomb that could kill us and all the people we loved in seconds. Recall school friends coming to school at different points, the penny having just dropped, and asking teachers about it - some in tears. Can you imagine the generation of today having to go through that? They'd be queuing up round the street for counselling and Prozac by the bucket (other anti depressants are available).

When the realisation of a possible Nuclear holocaust hit me I asked my mum what we would do if Russia nuked us? My mum said, 'we'll just all hug each other until we die.' Not the reassuring answer I was looking for I have to say.

Asked a mates father soon after and he said, 'Best thing to do is drive into the centre of London and make sure you're as close to where the bomb drops, that way you'll die instantly and not suffer.'

What with this knowledge and living through the Mullery era, it's any wonder I didn't end it all there and then.

Mrs Bubbs tells me when she asked her mum she was told, 'Well there's no point worrying about it dear, you'll just have to sit there and wait till it hits you.' Mrs Bubbs was obviously not consoled by this information and ran to her older sister for a second opinion and was basically told the same.

Just interested what other BBSers experiences were like when they suddenly understood about the Nuclear threat. What did those feckless 70's/80's adults say to you when you questioned them about it?

15 Years Ago Today,A Magnificent 7! Wolves 0 Palace 1.

Remember this game? A Jovan Kirovski goal on the cusp of HT gave us all 3 points at Molineux & Saw Palace leapfrog the hosts to become leaders of Division 1. :)

It was our 7th successive league victory in a row & we were playing lovely free flowing football & scoring goals aplenty with Freedman/Morrison banging them in upfront & Kirovski creating chances aplenty in the "No10" role.

After heavy early defeats to Nottingham Forest,Millwall :grrr: & Portsmouth, after starting the season with 2 straight league wins & a League Cup win at Leyton Orient,Bruce brought in Steve Vickers on loan from Middlesbrough to partner new signing Tony Popovic at the heart of defence & it all suddenly clicked into place,we also won at Everton on penalties in the League Cup during this time :lux:

Kirovski had 1 of those Golden mini Palace careers,if the flat nosed elephant faced C*nt Bruce didn't F*ck off to Birmingham in November I'm sure he would've continued in the same vein & we could've,at least, made the playoffs that season.

Unfortunately "Clever" Trevor never rated him & we ended up with Akinbiyi & mid table! :(

Anyone on here go to this game? I assume it was sent the most pleasurable experience afterwards either!?

Assetto Corsa Game/Driving Simulator

Assetto Corsa is the hardest driving game/simulator that I have ever played as the slightest error in your driving will send you battling to rectify it as you spin out of control and go off of the track.

With practice and tweaking of the many control options I can now honestly say that it is so worth persevering as this is as close to real-life racing as you can experience on a PC or console and you really feel like you are at the wheel of one of the 100 perfectly replicated cars in the game especially when you use the in-car camera view.

There are many real-life tracks to hone your driving skills on and there are both single player and multiplayer modes of play.

All of the cars and tracks are available from the off but the career mode starts in basic saloon cars and you have to finish in the top 3 to progress through the tiers and championships.

If you have the patience then this is a superb driving experience but it is not an arcade like driving game but a driving simulator that needs to be mastered.

Winning my first race showed that practice makes perfect.

The game was recently updated and the poor review scores would be based on using the default controller settings which are far from ideal but thankfully can be changed as I have done.

Points for safety 2016/17

Now that we are 20% of the way into the season I thought it may be useful to look at average points needed for safety using a comparison with the points attained after 8 games over the last 10 seasons.

The current position is that 38 points should be sufficient.

Meaning we need less than a point a game.

I will update throughout the season at strategic points.

Some thoughts on the West Ham game

Had some thoughts on the West Ham game about how we were slightly unlucky but have been punished by our habit of conceding the first goal this season. I also think the second half improvement was not just down to Cabaye/ Pardew, and we should be careful before jumping to any conclusions about how we'll do with Yohan instead of Ledley.

Short article - have a read here:

I also discussed how Benteke is getting on with his penalty miss in mind.

Appreciate any comments - thanks!

During the Croydon Advertiser Facebook chat today, Mark Ritson inferred that Cabye was unhappy/unsettled at Palace. I haven't seen this reported anywhere else, has anybody seen anything at all about this elsewhere?.

Nou Camp experiences

Taking the sprogs to a game there next weekend for the first time. Just looking for tips to get the most out of it. Things to do pre-match around the stadium etc.

And also ticket advice. I know they release non-use season ticket ones with 48hrs to go and as it's only v Granada i'm fairly confident of getting three but does anyone know if the kids get a discount?

Gracias

Discussion: Musings on the January window

I suspect Pardew/Parish have to finalise their target(s) very soon to have a chance of reeling in the sort of player(s) that will upgrade the side. This and the latest thirst for attacking/pacy fullbacks made me muse on the dilemmas facing Pards etc. There have been clamours for CBs, FBs, AMs, even wingers and another striker :D So to take it seriously what shape and where would he spend money in the Jan window as he obviously can't do all of the above?

Does he position us for 3 at the back? Does he add more creativity or maybe even more power/height in midfield? Does he buy super fullbacks to release the wingers into the middle during attacks to score goals? I don't think I am convinced enough on the formation side of things to plump for a single option and I think we have to keep our options open. I do agree with the Managers' comments that formation isn't everything but that attitude/intensity and players win games. But neither is it irrelevant. So I have spent an hour so so musing and came up with this.

To cut it short I think one attractive option might be to go for someone like Ben Davies (its a shame that he got a run-out for Spurs the other day but he is unlikely to be a regular).

He can play LB or CB and is used to playing in a 3 at the back with Wales. He has a good pedigree and attitude and is still only 23 I think (younger than I had thought actually). He must be at the point where he needs games. If they won't sell him yet perhaps we could take him on loan at least as a first step. Being Welsh kind of clinches it :D and if Hennessey or Ledley moves on it maintains our quota.

He fits well because it covers for Souare's injury, it gives us serious 3 at the back options and he provides CB cover too. He is not slow either. He is still developing but I do think he would be a top player for us. Naturally left sided CB would be good for us too. Gibbs is a great LB option but doesn't offer the same versatility/cover.

So happy with that I thought if there was one more purchase - who/what should it be? Instinctively I think would benefit such a lot from a quality CM/AM in so many of our games but on reflection I think we need to add a powerful DM/CM midfielder. To be blunt someone powerful in the centre of the park that can play in the DM/CM slot alongside Cabaye. Someone of the ilk of Kouyate. Now easy to say, find me another Kouyate, I know, but rather than pick one - perhaps better describe him.

He needs to be able to play DM but have the all round skills/energy of a CM/boxtobox mid. He needs to have height and power because our midfield is 'shrinking' :D. Carvalho would be nice but I can't see that one happening now. So we need the 'next one' - easy huh?

So why? I think if we were to add a creative AM to the current squad we would kill some of the lower teams for sure but too often we will struggle to compete in the middle. Perhaps emphasised in the first half on Saturday.

If we had that player with 2 out of Macca, Punch and Cabaye around him I think we can stop worrying about winning the ball back and concentrate on making these wingers really work for us (goals and assists). I am not sure who that is but I suspect it is a cheaper and more effective buy than an AM right now.

In Jan, I would leave it at that and sort out the AM for the summer. I suspect Davies would only be a loan and so we could afford a little more on the other player. Souare would be back by summer and Pardew would know what he needs by then too.

Easy .......

Obscenity Laws – The Youth Bible

In July 2014, my daughter aged 10, received The Youth Bible as a present from her Church of England First School, paid for by a local educational charity. Thankfully it has never been opened and read, until I saw it on my 8 year old son's bookshelf last weekend.

Wondering if it is as graphic and horrific as the 'adult' version, I was disturbed to turn to Genesis 19 and read in full detail about the Sodom and Gomorrah episode with Lot, which involves Lot giving his virgin daughters to the mob for sexual relations rather than handing over his visitors, God killing Lot's wife for looking over her shoulder, Lot's daughters getting him drunk and having sexual relations with him and God obliterating a city and killing everyone within. The imagery is horrific.

Therefore, we have a book, given to a 10 year old, overseen by a state school which, contained within only one page includes rape, killings, violence and a complete lack of morals. And, of course, were I to read it any further there would be many, many more inappropriate stories which leave nothing to the imagination.

We have Parliamentary laws regarding the selling of video games, top shelf magazines and films to those aged under 18 and yet we have a state school that can oversee the handing out of a book to a 10 year old girl containing many horrific stories, including one that tells of daughters getting their father drunk and raping him.

We have obscenity laws in place in the UK to protect children from obscene pictures and words, via books, images, internet etc, so why are schools able to oversee the handing out of explicit sexual and horrific literature to 10 year old girls?

Football manager Neil Warnock 'made players pay him to get into team' MPs told

Quote:

Neil Warnock, the manager of Cardiff City FC, was accused of making players pay him part of their wages to ensure they got into the team, a committee of MPs has heard.

One of Warnock's players alleged that he gave players "extra wages and appearance bonus to make sure they pay him to get in the team or on the bench".

The claim was made by Jason Puncheon, who played for Warnock in 2014 when Warnock was manager of Premier League side Crystal Palace and also played for him during a loan spell at Queens Park Rangers in 2011.
To view the link you have to Register or Login

Story here from the Telegraph. MPs have been told that Neil Warnock asked players to pay him money to get into the first team. This is based on allegations made by Jason Puncheon and refers to Warnock at both QPR and Palace.

The idea that this might have been going on at the club is just outrageous.

Is Russia any worse than the United States?

discuss. I see all these deliberate posturing of Russia as the big evil, but it just seems to be that, posturing, if you step away from it, there's very little Russia is doing than is any worse than the US and probably not as bad as our 'allies' The Saudis.

Italian Football Thread

dimanche 16 octobre 2016

Been meaning to start this thread for a couple of weeks. Was always a fan of Serie A then sort of died out on it for a bit, but recently been taking a big interest in it again. As many will know on here my Italian team has always been Inter since way back in the early 90s... Football Italia on C4 and all that.

Also taking an interest in the lower leagues, especially as on the Lega Pro (formerly Serie C) website you can view highlights from all of the 30 games over the weekend. :p Don't get me wrong the standard looks pretty shocking but worth a view, especially as I counted about 15 teams in the 3 Divisions who have played in Serie A in the years that I have followed it, including the likes of Parma.

I appreciate Italian football has a bit of a tarnished reputation but hopefully there are a few others on here who follow and fancy a bit of discussion. :lux:

$50 Challenge

Hi everyone, I am down to my last $50 and am determined to make it grow into enough to make some decent money once again.

If you would like to join me, my first bet is on Liverpool beating Man Utd.

It's with William hill and is paying $2.10, so I will make back $110.

Turk Uk

Hi I am sorry if this is not in the correct forum. I have just bought a setup box and have gotten, what I think is the correct turk link, however none of the sports channels that are offered actually work, so I am interested if turk is nolonger administrating the site.

Does anyone know, as I am really wanting to watch the palace matches live.

One Way Air Tickets

On the cusp of booking a flight to Chile from JFK. LATAM do direct flights. I'm not coming back so this is a one way flight.
Pricing for a one way ticket is $1250 and oddly only connecting flights available.
Pricing for a return on the direct flight same date, $900.

What's the pricing logic? Why do they not want to offer a one way direct flight? Why is the more troublesome, longer, connecting one-way flight pricing $350 more than a direct return ticket?
By forcing me to buy a return ticket and not use the return leg my seat goes empty. The airline loses the opportunity of selling the seat (unless they are overbooking the flights, which I doubt there's enough demand to do so).

Does anyone actually book one-way flight tickets? Why bother to even offer them?

Never understood one way pricing logic.

Away fans location

I have been coming to palace as a ST holder since 2012 and sit in holmesdale block A. I have been informed by lots of friends I have met here that the away fans used to be in the blocks next to them of the arthur wait and it used to be a lot of fun and the banter was great.

Yesterday I took my 10 year old nephew to his first game and we sat in the Whitehorse stand. I would just like to say for this area to be called a family stand is quite frankly disgraceful. My nephew and I was subject to terrible language and hand gestures from the West Ham and he felt rather intimidated and now does not wish to return to selhurst.

He was not alone, there was a lot of other families and kids subject to lots of abuse. There were only a few giving it back and they were soon told to stop and sit down by the stewards I can't help feeling that being back in block A this level of behaviour would have been tolerated and the fans there would have given a lot back but it just spoiled mine and my nephews day watching West Ham take the piss all game.

I wonder if Cpfc 2010 would look into this because my conclusion from yesterday is the away end needs to be moved back to where it used to be and soon.

Repair a tumble dryer

Can anyone recommend a tumble dryer repairer in the West Wickham/Shirley area?

1-0 down. 70 mins gone. Everyone back to defend a corner?

Yes, it needs its own thread. Personally I'd like us to keep one up front at all times when defending a corner. But to not do so when 1-0 down with only 20 mins to go seems even more ridiculous. I'd like to know other people's thoughts.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Leicester (away)

--------------------Mandanda------------------------------
Ward------Dann----------------Tomkins----------Ledley
-----------Cabaye-------------Mccarthur-----------------
---Townsend-------Puncheon--------------Zaha----------
---------------------Benteke-------------------------------

Subs:

Hennessey
Delaney
Kelly
Flamini
Sako
CYL
Wickham

1) Ledley at left back because he has a good engine, a nice left peg and could get up and down. Can put his foot in, but does lack pace. Not ideal, and I understand if others may prefer to stick with Kelly for this game. Definitely for home games I would go with Ledley until January though.

2) I'd switch Zaha and Townsend for the first half, as I think Townsend is better on that side.

3) Would like to see Sako off the bench to play close to Benteke.

Kevin Kean

Did he join us in summer as coach ? I don't take much notice of who sits on bench but don't recall seeing him ?

How many home wins this season?

Yesterday's home defeat was our 22nd home defeat in 40 Premier League games. Why are we so bad at home? TWENTY TWO home defeats in little over 2 years. Will this improve by the end of the season?

Long shot question re using computer with LG TV

Hi,

Long post to avoid wasting your time with to and fro questions so tried to put all detail in up front.

Background info
I have used a Sony Bravia TV as a PC screen for 8 years or more and would never go back to a 'small/normal sized screen. With 4k establishing itself now and with some CCTV cameras arriving soon I thought I would upgrade the PC TV to be ready. I ended up with a 49" LG UH770 (widely available). I use the PC as one of 3 screens (The TV, a ASUS monitor sitting next to it and the 3rd port goes into a HDMI switch that allows me to see the output on any of the TVs across the house). The TV is identified as the Primary screen. This has worked perfectly in this configuration with the Sony TV for over 3 years. Nvidia GeForce GTX970 video card. All connections out are via HDMI cables. Both devices are up to date with drivers/software. The LG is in 'Game mode' but I think that is a graphics profile TBH.

Problem
It works fine once everything is up and running but at night I power both the PC and TV down. Every morning I start the PC and TV screen and it's a nightmare to get the PC opening screen displayed. The TV signals that there is no input. The only way of getting a connection seems to be to close down both again and restart the PC and then start the TV after a count of 3 or 4 but it's very imprecise and still inconsistent (and very irritating). Then everything works perfectly.

Currently the only way I can avoid this is to log off the PC instead of closing it down which I am not keen on.

I assume it's some sort of HMDI syncing issue.

I have tried to search online and I can see some reference to similar issues but I haven't yet found anything helpful. I did email LG support but the response was weird. After suggesting it would be displayed after a short while (I wouldn't be asking if it did that would I) and recommending I spam the PC BIOS I lost faith a little. :(

So just wondered if the great BBS guru has any good ideas other than buy a different TV which isn't helpful.

Song for Benteke

Thoughts?

New Smart TV

Can anyone recommend a good place for me to figure out which new smart tv I want to buy.

I want it to be freesat (not freeview) enabled, and have the amazon instant video and nowtv apps built in. I'm sick of having four different remotes, and three set top boxes all requiring various plugs and cables.

Cheers

Selling shares advice needed

This is not as straight forward as it seems, I'm asking on behalf of a friend who is stuck.

He's not a UK resident and he's now in London and needs to sell shares in Royal Dutch Shell which are in his mothers name to pay for her care in Costa Rica. She is in her 90's with Alzheimers and he has full power of attourney.

They are Nominal B shares held with Equitini Finance in and to sell he needs an account with them which are only available to UK residents.

Any advice on where he should look next?

I think he's ****ed but it's not my field at all.

Peter Berry RIP 1933-2016

The club received the sad news earlier this week that Peter Berry, who was with Palace from 1949 to 1958, sadly passed away last Saturday (8th October) aged 83.

Peter joined the groundstaff in 1949, signed professional forms in 1951 but was then called up for National Service which meant his first team debut did not come until January 1954.

A regular in the side from September 1954 until May 1958 Peter was usually found in the outside right position but his versatility was such that he could play anywhere across the five forward positions.

After 161 League and FA Cup appearances, netting 28 goals, Peter signed for Ipswich Town, then managed by Alf Ramsey, but a bad injury in December 1959 heralded the end of his professional career in 1961.

Peter returned to his native Hampshire and opened a sports shop with his brother John, who had played for Manchester United and survived the Munich Air Disaster.

Our condolences go to his family and friends at this difficult time.

Pipeline wars ...

So I woke up to this facebook post this morning ... I haven't had a chance to check out the veracity of it properly yet, but it certainly seems worthy of discussion ...

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

So you may be wondering why we are on the brink of WWIII. I will do my best to explain it.

See Saudi Arabia would like to compete with Russia for the European Natural Gas business.

Russia doesn't like this idea as it not only costs them customers and future income but it reduces their influence over Europe.

In order for this pipeline to get to Europe though it has to cross Syria.

Syrian President Assad decided it wasn't in the best interests of Syria to agree to the Saudi pipeline but instead agreed to the Iranian pipeline.

Saudi, the European Union, Israel and the United States then started a rebellion against the Syrian Government by hiring mercenaries and by using their versions of the CIA to pay people to oust Assad.

The end goal is installation of a puppet government friendly to the desires of this alliance.

The fact that this initiative spawned ISIS and provided a huge source of funding for our former enemies to include Al Qaeda doesn't seem to bother the people at the top.

They also sponsored the rebellion in Ukraine to depose the Russian friendly president there, so their alliance would have control of the Russian pipelines going through Ukraine.

They didn't Expect Russia to fight back though and it resulted in an on going color war there with massive casualties and Russia's seizing of Crimea.

Note the Route of one of the Saudi pipeline and then the route of the Iranian pipeline and learn. See attached images.

Every country supporting the ouster of Assad has a direct interest in the Saudi pipeline deal or is a client state of one of the powers that does.

The article also explains how Saudi sponsored the civil war in Yemen to get yet another pipeline deal done!

Good luck US government. I don't think you are going to get away with this one.

You will never read about the real reasons for this massive ****up in the United States media that is for sure. Luckily from my outpost here in Thailand I get news from all over and have many friends from outside the zone of direct US media thought control.

A Hearty Thank You to Dejan Gajic, for his contribution to this rant.

So-called "Energy Drinks"

I have always found it surprising and just how many people, including children, seem to be hooked on high sugar and stimulant drinks such as Red Bull, etc.

But now I see adverts for the oxymoron that is the "sugar-free" energy drink. Looking at one of these in a supermarket recently they are, as I suspected, zero calories, but contain a stack of caffeine and taurine.

Surely these can only be marketed as 'sugar free stimulant drinks'.

How can any company get away with describing something containing no energy as an "energy drink"?

RBS - more bad bankers

RBS deliberately pushed well performing firms into insolvency so that they could lower their loan book and buy up their assets for a song.

People lost their livelihoods, homes and relationships because of an unscrupulous desire for greed.

Is the era of banker bashing over? Not yet I think. The mess is still being cleared up whilst diversionary politics is pointing the finger at others and we're all left suffering with austerity.

Information regarding official ticket partners and touting

Information regarding touting and official ticketing partners.

Quote:

Crystal Palace Football Club, in conjunction with the Premier League, have identified over 1000 accounts used by ticket touts.

These have been blocked with immediate effect, and the tickets booked through these accounts have also been cancelled, and were made available for our supporters to book.

Anyone in possession of touted tickets, will be refused entry to the stadium, and will have their tickets confiscated without a refund.

Ticket touting is an illegal offense in the UK, and prevents our supporters from being able to attend matches.

These are often sold at highly inflated prices, and in the worst cases, the tickets either do not exist, or have been sold to more than one person.

Any supporters who suspect their tickets have been booked through an unofficial source, can contact the Box Office by email at boxoffice@cpfc.co.uk, including where they booked their tickets from, and the full seat details of the tickets purchased.

For those who remember and liked the band are back and reunited for this one off gig this Christmas, and follows on from their new releases fresh from the Abbey Road studios:

Ok so the next four tracks from The Lightship Recordings are up in all the same places to buy or stream as before. Consider this part 2 with the final part to go up soon.
Here's a few links to get you started: spotify itunes Juno ....

The gig is set for The Lexington on Pentonville Road, London on Tuesday 20th December 2016.

We reunite from across the globe with the first full band performance since 2010. This may be the only show for the foreseeable future, so let’s not waste it - the brass is being buffed daily, the hits will get a dusting down with tracks of old, some of new and praps even a christmas cover to help wash down the free mince pies & if we can remember where we put that cardboard banner that wowed the crowds for so many years, we'll gaffer that up too! We're pulling out the stops for this one!

Tickets will be £10 & go on sale this afternoon through Dice

The support is half sorted but, as you're reading this, if anyone has any recommendations of a young bunch of kats who fancy a blast then send us a link and we'll happily take a listen.

Now we're sorry to all those who can't make it to the capital, we'd love to go to some of our favourite haunts that treated us so well over the years but time constraints have put the kibosh on anything else. Rest assured, it will be hot, mincy, crackers and we'll be raging until the small hours thanks to some quality tunes spun by dodgy fellas, AKA the Scum.

So until then, enjoy Part 2 of The Lightship Recordings peeps!
