Peter Berry RIP 1933-2016

vendredi 14 octobre 2016

The club received the sad news earlier this week that Peter Berry, who was with Palace from 1949 to 1958, sadly passed away last Saturday (8th October) aged 83.

Peter joined the groundstaff in 1949, signed professional forms in 1951 but was then called up for National Service which meant his first team debut did not come until January 1954.

A regular in the side from September 1954 until May 1958 Peter was usually found in the outside right position but his versatility was such that he could play anywhere across the five forward positions.

After 161 League and FA Cup appearances, netting 28 goals, Peter signed for Ipswich Town, then managed by Alf Ramsey, but a bad injury in December 1959 heralded the end of his professional career in 1961.

Peter returned to his native Hampshire and opened a sports shop with his brother John, who had played for Manchester United and survived the Munich Air Disaster.

Our condolences go to his family and friends at this difficult time.
