This seriously ******* sucks. Been a mess all evening.

Currently bumping his Specials Herbs series. He had the best beats.

Rumour: Sakho off to West Brom?

According to the Birmingham Mail, BFS is looking to take Mamadou Sakho to West Brom in January.

What have you achieved in 2020?

I leave 2020 with an amazing relationship with my eldest. We’ve spent the year talking, walking and learning from each other.

This wouldn’t have happened without Covid.

I’m also leaving the year 33lbs lighter than I entered it.

You?

Happy New Year

Jeepers this place is slipping. I would have expected our Aussie brethren to have got a thread up.

Ray Ciolfar RIP

I found this in a thread in the General Palace Discussion section.

Ray Colfar sadly passed away during the days leading up to Christmas, aged 85.

Ray signed for Palace in November 1958 from Sutton United and went on to make 44 appearances and scored 6 goals up to his departure in the summer of 1961. His best season with us was the 1959-60 season where, from his outside left position, he started 26 games scoring 5 goals, netting twice in each of the 8-1 and 9-0 victories over Watford and Barrow.

Ray lost his place to new arrival Ron Heckman for the 1960-61 promotion season, featuring five times and he then joined Cambridge United.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Crystal Ball: Sheff Utd (h)

A big 3 points available to give us some stability. They score late to make it a nervous finish but we get over the line

Palace 2-1 Sheff U

Benteke 9, Tomkins 35
Brewster 86 (pen)

Official: Jimmy Greaves MBE

Finally been recognised in the New Years Honours, about time too. My first football hero before I discovered Palace

The best burger in London

What place in your opinion does the best burgers in London. I had Bleeckers and was quite disappointed, think 5 guys are better. Any others?

1960 kit

mercredi 30 décembre 2020

Have a look at today's item on the main cpfc.co.uk site re the 1960 promotion from the 4th division - my first season watching us, and the launch pad to where we are now. Look at the photos included in that item.

Although it is nothing like the kit that we have got used to in recent years, I have always really liked the whole thing - shirt, shorts and socks.

As it was the start of our progression, I think it would be great to acknowledge the 6oth anniversary by wearing the whole kit next season.

What do you all think?

Most elated palace moment.

Well there’s been a few hasn’t there , but you can only choose one.
After a lot of thought I’ve gone with brighty’s goal in the 4-3 semi final. The pure elation and disbelief made me nearly pass out once I calmed down :)
What about you?

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Darts World Championships 2021

Anyone just watch the Van Gerwen - Cullen game? Incredible.

WBA - a lesson to foreign owners

I am watching Leeds decimate WBA and thinking to myself that maybe there is a lesson for foreign owners new to the English game. They had Bilic who had had a great result against Man City and had momentum and they thought they could do better with BFS. I honestly think that slaven could have turned this around given a choice but the subliminal message to the players is that even their best wasn’t good enough.

We’ve seen no new manager bounce this time and I think they could live to regret this unless they really splunk the cash in January but if you’re willing to do that, why not support the manager that got you promoted rather than a journeyman with no sticking power

Suggestion: January transfer targets

Who and what positions should we be targeting?

For me we need

CM - younger, box to box, but if creativity about them

RW - we need a right winger

CB - need to get younger at the back..

striker - Bats isn’t fancied and is expensive

I don’t think January is time to fill all of the above but we can’t start. My two suggestions would be

Ajer from Celtic as the Centre back

Armstrong from Blackburn as the striker

2020

Played 34 league games in 2020.

9 wins, 8 draws, 17 defeats. 35 points. A dreadful year.

New Year's Eve Drinks

So what have we all got lined up to drink on New Year's Eve then?

In my house we usually have some Cava on the go, with some ales / beers leading up to it.

Because it was mentioned on the Sunday Roast thread, I think I might knock a couple of Irish Coffee's down after dinner.

Absolute Vanilla Vodka with ice and freshly squeezed orange juice in a pint glass over ice is another personal favourite.

I think I'm going to try to drown 2020.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Sheffield United

Big game.

Guaita
Clyne - Tomkins - Sakho - Mitchell
Schlupp - Milivojevic- Riedewald - Eze
Ayew - Zaha

Butland, Ward, van Aanholt, Dann, McCarthy, McArthur, Townsend, Benteke, Batshuayi

Player Ratings And Reviews: Leicester (h) 28/12/20

Can someone add a poll ?

Terrible first half…Palace treated the ball like a hot potato, they were so nervous in possession.
Rode our luck and definitely came out with more urgency second half.

Disappointed to have dropped 2 points at the end but let’s face it after the equaliser we should probably have lost the point we were ultimately left with.

Guiata 7 – For that penalty save

Clyne 5 – looked slow and didn’t get forward too much- probably under orders.

Tomkins 6 - So slow for the penalty..but lack of match action and a long lay off was the reason. Otherwise he defended manfully.

Kouyate 5 - he was like Bambi in headlights at times. So flaky.

Mitchell 6 - thought he did well, considering he hasn’t had much game time. Passing awry at times but at others he was attacking well.

Townsend 6 - would have been a 5 . his passing was awful and set piece deliveries dreadful. One decent cross for Wilf but he ran about and defended manfully, supporting Clyne. Missed a gilt edged chance.

Luka 6 - better than the Villa game…few interceptions, still looks painfully slow.

Jairo 5 - I’m fan but he’s played better. A few hoofed clearances ..but he didn’t have his passing game in gear today.

Schluppy 6 - thought he let Tyrick down several times in the first half with his lack of tracking back. I was screaming for him to cover at times…he just want at the races..but as ever going forward was direct and positive.

Wilf 7 - a high’ish mark for the goal alone. Otherwise his passing let him down at times.

Benteke 5 - despite what some say I thought he put the effort in but wasn’t effective/strong enough in the challenge. No decent service – again.

Subs
Macca 5 - so slow at times – but then we all know that
Ayew…not on long enough…but at least he looked interested this time.

If we’d won I would have thought 3 points from the last 3 games (Liverpool, Villa, Leicester) would have been pretty acceptable…so in my own weird way of thinking we just dropped 2 points over the last three games !

Greg norman

As if it couldn't get any worse

Golf legend Greg Norman in hospital with Covid-19
Former world number one golfer Greg Norman is back in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.

The 65-year-old Australian went to hospital on Friday with a mild fever, cough, aches and pains and a headache. The 1986 and 1993 Open champion then returned home to self-isolate and await the result of a Covid-19 test.

"I hope this will be my final update on this Covid saga - back in hospital after getting a positive result," he posted on Instagram.

Norman said that, despite being "fit and strong" and having a "high tolerance for pain", the virus was "like nothing I have ever experienced before".

He added that he was on "the path to full recovery" and hoped to return home to isolate later on Monday.

Norman spent more than 300 weeks at the top of the world rankings and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001.

The Palace Antique Roadshow

Post up your old Palace memorabilia and curiosities with any relevant info attached, and the BBS experts will try and decipher the origin and more importantly, the market price for your Palace heirloom.

Recently a BBSer posted up an old vintage looking football with ‘Crystal Palace’ emblazoned on it, thinking this just might be the hidden family jewel that will make him a millionaire. The BBS good and the wise soon pounced on it and informed the poster that what he in actual fact had in his possession was a bit of modern foreign merchandise tatt that would probably be worth a fiver if he was lucky.

So with that spirit in mind, I’ll start...

A Palace mirror bought for me around the early 80’s from the club shop I think. I would guess at about 82/83? Have seen Palace mirrors over the years on eBay but never this one. Any ideas of its origin and market value? I’m not selling btw!

Why do we care so much?

I am 67 years old, but the Villa game was probably the most angry and upset I have been watching us. After I felt ashamed that at my age I still feel that way. I know that feeling does not last too long, but in the great scheme of things it's trivial.

Comparison of Points Tally At Same Number of Games in Past Seasons

I just had a look at how our points tally of 18 from 15 points compare with our achievements in previous seasons and also points at half way mark of 19 games

2013/2014
After 15 games: 13 points
After 19 games: 16 points
Pulis season

2014/2015
After 15 games: 14 points
After 19 games: 16 points
Warnock replaced by Pardew after Boxing Day

2015/2016
After 15 games: 23 points
After 19 games: 31 points
We all know how we collapsed in the second half of that season
FA Cup Final

2016/2017
After 15 games: 15 points
After 19 games: 16 points
We were still on 19 points after 25 games
Allardyce to the rescue from 26th games

2017/2018
After 15 games: 10 points
After 19 games: 18 points
Hodgsons first season when we had no points from first 7 games

2018/2019
After 15 games: 12 points
After 19 games: 19 points

2019/2020
After 15 games: 21 points
After 19 games: 26 points

2020/2021
After 15 games: 18 points

So we are 3 points below last season both in terms of points after 15 games and also taking into results in parallel matches last season (replacing promoted teams with relegated teams)

Interesting that when we have had a good first half of the season we have had a bad second half (2015/2016 and last season post restart) but generally we had a better second half of the season.

This season is just an average par for the course Palace season.
All the talk of Top 10 finish can stop and we will be looking down more than looking up.

Crystal Ball: Leicester City (H)

samedi 26 décembre 2020

The shitshow rolls on. Next up Leicester City on Monday night.

Score predictions and scorers please.

I'll start with some optimism;

Palace 0

Leicester 1 - Vardy

Roy in or Out - Villa away

As requested on this thread: To view the link you have to Register or Login

New poll after 3-0 loss at Villa.

Happy for mod to merge.

45+ years

A Palace fan since 1977.
These last 2 weeks has to be the most gutless I have ever seen the team, even during a 7 run loosing streak.
No pride, passion or remorse. Even if we dont get relegated, nothing to hang on to anywhere.
I enjoyed watching the scum Man U earlier on more than this and that is as deprived as I can get.
Suck a turd out of my dying corpse.
Bye bye

Suggested Team and Formation For: Leicester (H)

Far too much loyalty shown to tired and underperforming players.
Will he go back to basics vs. a possession loving Leicester?
I would go with:

Guaita
Clyne Kelly Sakho (not sure if Tomkins is match fit but any 2 of those 3) Mitchell
McCarthy Kouyate/Jairo (Kouyate may need a breather but having two very defensive DMs might be the way forward to quell the attacking midfield of Leics).
Wilf Eze Schlupp
Batshuyai

Bench: Butland, Banks, Ward, Luka or McArthur, the other one of Sakho/Kelly/Tomkins, PVA, Townsend, Ayew, Benteke.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Leicester

Guaita
Ward - Tomkins - Sakho - Mitchell
Townsend - McCarthy - Riedewald - Eze
Benteke - Zaha

Butland, Clyne, van Aanholt, Dann, Milivojevic, McArthur, Schlupp, Ayew, Batshuayi

Player Ratings And Reviews: Villa 3-0 loss (LOL again)

Unacceptable. As a start, you have to look at the Villa team in comparison to ours and think - where is it going wrong that they can beat us with 10 men? It’s got to be the manager, in my opinion. Liverpool was NOT a freak result when you look at the result and performance today.

Firstly I think only making the one unenforced change at right back was the wrong call. There should’ve been more changes, especially when you look at the continued awful performances by the same players.

The first goal by them was absolutely abysmal. It was a weak attempted cross by PVA with absolutely no conviction that was turned into a counter attack by Villa. PVA then made a very weak attempt at getting back into position and the attack come down that side. The midfield had to be drawn out to the gap left by our LB and that’s where the goal came from. PVA was left in no mans land.

I think that one goal exemplified PVA’s display on the whole, attacking with no real conviction and not making any real attempt to get back into position when we have to defend to inevitable counter attacks. Ward was actually decent up until the 80th minute when he made 2-3 errors in attack. Kouyate AGAIN was too far away from his other centre back for the second game in the row and was found out of position too often, and Watkins often found himself in behind Kouyate. Is Dann showing his age? Very slow and PVA next to him just doesn’t work.

In midfield, Milivojevic was pretty dreadful and there was just needless fouls all over the place. Which came to a head when one of their players was going down a dead end in the corner and Luka put a foot in. This ultimately lead to the Villa goal. While talking about Milivojevic, you HAVE to ask, why is he back on set pieces!? It’s clear that Eze is our best free kick and corner taker, so why has he been taken off them!? I see it as selfish management from Luka as a captain and piss poor management from Roy as a manager. It echos his choice to choose Kane as a corner taker a few years back.

The third goal upset me, why is there only three players back on that counter attack!? Where’s PVA? Where’s Riedewald? They’re all just jogging back. The issue we have at the moment is that there is no urgency to get back from our attacks. No desire and no mentality. For this you have to look towards our leaders and our management. There doesn’t seem to be anything coming from them.

Only good thing today...

...was the fake fans, in full voice throughout the game, a credit to the club and should be given refunds by the players for their support 👏👏

Player Ratings And Reviews: Aston Villa 3-0 Palace

Not sure what to say . We were shocking , had no shape , no energy , no discipline and no quality . You can blame players as much as you like but RH has to take a lot of the blame

1/ We cannot have EZE and PVA playing on the left , PVA is not great defensively and EZE just does not work hard enough - not sure what he was thinking for 3rd goal
2/ Schlupp looks lost on right and provides very little offensively or defensively there
3/ McArthur just should not be starting
4/ We play a target man and barely supply any crosses to him . However compare Watkins , all strength and movement to Benteke who is just slow and static.

Why did we wait so long to make changes . I would have brought Townsend on at half time to play on right , put Schlupp in middle and take off McArthur .
It was another shocking performance and to make matters worse we just looked to have no shape or direction . I accept SP will not get rid of RH , but Eddie Howe is available and would at least get players to look comfortable on the ball and get some movement in the side .

The spine of our team.....

Has gone. Simple as that really.

2 very poor CB’s, 2 very poor CM who are completely out of form.

Roy must take the blame for this as his team selection is purely based on name rather than performances.

Discussion: Fikayo Tomori

Lots of talk today that he has had enough and wants permanently out of Chelsea (which as always could just be talk we will have to see I suppose). Good age and from what I can recall looked pretty promising, would people take him?

Plenty of possible issues of course. Price, transfer competition, he wants to leave Chelsea for guaranteed game time and Roy may prefer the experienced options

Anyway I was bored and this seemed like as good a topic as any for a discussion :p

Hope everyone had a great xmas

Thomas Tuchel Has Been Sacked

Just for those of you who need to know info just from a thread title.

Your favourite "non football" Palace moment

During these difficult times I thought perhaps it'd do well to remember moments from the past that brought me great joy. Naturally with this in mind I was thinking of my (un)happy place, Selhurst Park.

One moment that sticks in my head was the return of Kevin Miller, it was after the QPR game (6-0 I think) and he'd announced his "retirement" but ended up returning with Barnsley. The game was a dull affair and wasn't very well attended so the atmosphere was hardly jumping. In the second half Miller was in the Holmesdale end goal. There was a point when someone was down injured, the game had stopped and all you could hear was gentle chatting, that was until from behind me in the Upper Holmesdale someone cut through the silence with:

"MILLER...YOU! FAT! C U N T!"

The cheering and laughter in the moments afterwards was something to behold, the fact that Miller must have heard it was even better. Whoever that was I salute you and hope that you're holding up ok as that was arguably my favourte "non footballing" Palace moment.

Thomas Tuchel

Sacked.

Happy Christmas to all Ballers! :moo2:

The Lawman on Sky Sports

Superb doc on Denis Law on Sky.

Very evocative, great footage and superb music. On 1968 and win at Wembley whilst Law was in hospital with leg injury. Missed European Cup final.

Always a great interviewee and good fun. What a player

Absolutely zero apols to any moron objecting to me enjoying a superb doc on this subject.

Anyone fitted a HIVE system?

A friend of mine has just fitted one herself. It all seems to be working except water is not heating up. She has mistaken me for someone who may have a clue about these things. Any ideas? HIVE don't supply proper instructions or help to try and force you to use their engineers...

Why are people so obsessed with loo rolls?

mardi 22 décembre 2020

Another lockdown another set of panic buying (Tesco’s now restricting certain items) but why loo rolls. As soon as there is a whiff of an issue and they are gone. Haven’t these people got enough? We have, for the last year, done absolutely nothing different and by the time we have run out there’s loads in the shelves. I get the flour and eggs whilst demand goes up to bake at home or whatever but lock down doesn’t make you shit more !

Rumour: Kasper Junker

Click-bait, but better than reading more 7-0 shit. Love that name too.

Thought the Trabz vid might bring back some happy memories as well :)

Suggestion: Mario Lemina

out of favour with parent club, knows Premier league. Is mobile, can put his foot in, pass, 27 years old. Thoughts?

Christmas crackers

The ones with hats;
Surely becoming a thing of the past and just a load of tat and cardboard to add to the recycling pile?
Why don't they fill them with stuff you actually want like a scratch card and a Derek & Clive CD?

The ones with cheese;
No point in buying the selection box and wasting the ones no-one likes. At least the chocolate makers have (mostly) resolved this in their selections.
Instead it must be Ritz for your extra strong cheddar and soft cheeses, Hovis for your extra strong cheddar and Wensleydale, plus Jacobs for your (yes) extra strong cheddar and all other cheeses.

This year we have gone for Sparkenhoe vintage, the last red Leicester made the traditional way with unpasturised milk

Finally - The cheese must contain no fruit and be accompanied by port

2020 Fans Award for player of the calendar year

lundi 21 décembre 2020

Has gone to Wilf. Is this a joke?

I agree he has started the new season well, but this started in September. He was hardly our most consistent player throughout the whole of the year and particularly someone who doesn't want to stay at the club.

Players like Guieta, Jimmy Mac, Wardy should have been in front of him this year.

Claiming the UK pension from Overseas?

I'm due for the UK Government Pension (unbelievably to me) in March. Anyone else on here claimed this from outside of the country. Is it a difficult process, do they send cheques or does it go into your overseas account?

Here in Australia I know that it's frozen at the amount that you first receive it it, and basically, it's just a red-tape formality inasmuch that the amount you receive just comes off of one's Australian Government Pension. For all I know at present, it may just go direct to Centrelink as a credit... However apparently according to Centrelink here I have to claim the UK one before I claim the Aus one.

Anyone else in a similar boat perchance? Can throw some short cut pointers my way?

PVA swapping shirts?

I only watched MOTD but saw PVA and Salah shirtless milliseconds after the final whistle.

Did he actually swap shirts with Salah?

I cannot understand Roy getting stick for smiling at the end - surely that is just pride trying to conceal huge embarrassment? He definitely did not come over very happy when interviewed.

Maybe, I am being over sensitive but if I had been at the game, PVA would have had dog’s abuse as he walked off. Have some ****in pride, we have just been humiliated, he personally gave the ball away 21 times and then must have rushed to Salah in a premeditated move to claim his shirt. That is the stuff for testimonials, friendlies, cup finals and maybe, just maybe epic battles (Pele/Moore).

I do accept this might just be me but I couldn’t believe what I think I saw!

RIP Norman Ogden

Its with great sadness to pass on the news that former season ticket holder Norman Ogden, or just Norm to his friends, has passed away.

Norm was a true Palace man, south London born and bred and attended his first game aged 5 in 1938. Yes, 1938. He was a walking history of the club and had many anecdotes of Selhurst as it used to be and the players throughout the decades. In recent years until ill-health prevented it 3 odd years back, he travelled down from North Wales to every home game as a season-ticket holder in the Old Stand and stayed at the Croydon Park hotel where it was my great privilege to get to know him over the years.

He never made a big deal of it, but it was an incredible effort to travel down and back for every home game well into his 80s. A true inspiration to all of us on supporting the club.

Norm was a great raconteur and had a story for any situation and any occasion. He always looked out for his friends and always made a point of introducing his English mate living in Denmark who had come to watch Palace.

My bro. Thankyou for the memories and good times we shared. I will miss your company, your good humour and your wicked stories!

For anyone who knew him on here I have heard his family are looking at the possibility to set up some kind of streaming of the service in these times.

Norm, may you rest in peace x

Two player board game recommendations?

With many of us preparing to try and eek some kind of a normal Christmas Day experience with fewer people, I wondered does anyone have any good recommendations for board games that work well with just two people?

Probably nothing too cerebral. To be played with a 14-year old so can be a bit risquee but not down right filthy.

What the Ruskies think of Brits.

So a YouTuber went around randomly questioning man-on-the-street Russians as to their attitudes to British people. I was fascinated since I've always felt our national sensibilities and humour to be closer to the Russians than Americans. Anyway, I found the video both illuminating and funny. Hope others do.

Rumour: Michael Olise

Few media sources this morning suggesting that we’re interested in this young kid at Reading who looks shit hot. I think he’s the teenager in Europe’s top 5 divisions and the championship who’s created the most chances by some distance as well.

He’s just turned 19, left footed and with heaps of potential I hope this is true. I imagine we’re looking at the success of Eze and looking to further emulate that model, hopefully.

Jekyll & Hyde team

samedi 19 décembre 2020

As a club we always seemed to be on the Palace rollercoaster full of ups and downs, but this team's performances seem to vary so much its untrue. One week we win 5-1 and the next we're losing 7-0.

Can anyone remember us being this inconsistent in the past? And why is it happening so much now?

71st game...

A spooky stat.

Apparantly that is Guaita's 71st game..

The 0-9 was Suckling's 71st.

Just heard that maybe the stattos can debunk it as fake news.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Aston Villa Away

Guaita

Ward Tomkins Cahill Mitchell

Schlupp Reidewald Mcarthur Eze

Benteke Zaha

Major changes needed after that 'performance' today.

Ward the better defender out of him and Clyne so think he should go back into the side.

Tomkins for Chiek, Kouyate has looked a liability at times at CB in recent games and Tomkins is our 2nd best CB after Cahill.

Mitchell for PVA after that disgraceful performance.

Jairo for Luka, better passer and didn't deserve to be dropped previously.

Benteke straight back in over Ayew.

Fine The Players

after that shambles all players involved should be fined two weeks wages for poor performance, and the money raised given to a charity as voted for by the fans.

How I nearly became a Billionare

A friend of mine just published an amusing book An Accidental Salesman (available on Amazon for Christmas) and we were chatting about it over a T1 beer. He was trying to encourage me to do something similar and whilst I may not have enough for a book, I do have a few near misses that the BBS may be interested in or maybe this will be a the longest 1 post thread here.

My first was when the dot com boom started and I could have morphed into Jeff Bezzos. I had the idea of a merchant site where everyone would do their shopping. I registered the domain name RetailPlazza.com with the thought that people would use it as a destination to visit and wander the shops, as they would in the real world. You would have a few Key tenants Debenhams :) etc that the smaller merchants could ride on the back of the visits. I got some interest but was in a "real world on the internet" mind set, along with the appalling dial up connectivity and an AR type interface, wandering round stores was too much to ask. So the whole thing got shelved. Today Amazon has become that market place for all these merchants. If only I had started on just books.

The second actually gave me a living for a couple of years. E commerce started to happen and another peer had just started work in a credit card fraud company. I started thinking how this could be applied to the internet. I realised that I could set up, with some tech friends, a gateway and offer payment services to smaller merchants. I was all set to become Elon Musk, ( as aside he was a competitor in the early days and we spoke a couple of times as we were both setting up) when things took a turn. My fraud colleague was telling me their biggest customers by far were Porn merchants This got me thinking that the second biggest vice was gambling, but American IT companies couldn’t touch them. So we did, as the UK doesn’t have an issue. This is a whole story in itself with the Mob and the FBI and some very nefarious activities, but we had some great customers like Sporting bet, Pokerstars, Slotland all putting their business through us. In the end it was all taken out of our hands, as the Americans persuaded the credit card companies to code their transactions by type and then instantly blocked gambling. By then the UK card companies had woken up and took all the ladbrooks etc direct. So we paid off our debtors and got out. If we had stuck with merchants and then people, as Paypal did, maybe I would be sending my cars into space.

The final one is more recent, that went a little wrong due to the domain name. With the advent of broadband and using VoIP for cheap telephone services and face time, the idea was to offer this kind of tech for home use with an independent platform that would work on Pc’s Mac’s and mobiles. Easy enough for my smart friends to work out how to do and we had a lot of kit still available from our credit card foray. The thing is for some STUPID reason we called it Gtalk. The first problem was when you did the google search at the time the number 1 result that came up was Gay talk which, political correctness aside, our potential customers didn’t find appealing. Then Google came out with their GTalk and killed us. So we had a choice re brand or let it drop. We chose the latter, who knew Covid was around the corner and everyone would be using the MUCH better named Zoom!

Today I’m just hoping to get a job after a shitty year caused the demise of my current role, that got binned due to Covid stopping sales. But Rodney “this time next year” ;)

The last ten games of the season

The end of last season was pretty bad with us only getting 1 point from the last 8 games. I think this season could be equally bad, and I can only see us getting 3 or 4 points from our last 10 matches

Man U H 0
Everton A 0
Chelsea H 0
Soton A 0
Leicester A 0
Man C H 0
Sheff U A 3
Villa H 1
Arsenal H 0
Liverpool A 0

I think we are going to need to have 35 points after the West Brom in mid March.

FIFA Football Awards 2020

This thing passed by very quietly but FIFA announced various awards covering the last 18 months. (Thanks, C-19)

Best FIFA Men's Player - Robert Lewandowski
Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper - Manuel Neuer
Best FIFA Men's Coach - Jürgen Klopp (won the tiebreaker over Hans-Dieter Flick)
Best FIFA Women's Player - Lucy Bronze
Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper - Sarah Bouhaddi
Best FIFA Women's Coach - Sarina Wiegman
FIFA Puskás Award - Son Heung-min

FIFA FIFPro Men's World11
GOALKEEPER - Alisson Becker
DEFENDERS - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alphonso Davies, Virgil van Dijk, Sergio Ramos
MIDFIELDERS - Thiago Alcántara, Kevin De Bruyne, Joshua Kimmich
FORWARDS - Robert Lewandowski, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo

FIFA FIFPro Women's World11
GOALKEEPER - Christiane Endler
DEFENDERS - Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, Wendie Renard
MIDFIELDERS - Barbara Bonansea, Veronica Boquete, Delphine Cascarino
FORWARDS - Pernille Harder, Tobin Heath, Vivianne Miedema, Megan Rapinoe

I don't have much of a problem with the men's picks, they seem reasonable for the time period covered. The issue I have is with the women's picks. There is no universe where Lucy Bronze is the best player in the world. She's not even the best defender on her (former) team, maybe even third bestt. I also don't understand the pick for women's GK. Unless they just picked players from Lyon, Endler and van Veenendaal are better than Bouhaddi. And van Veenendaal is only the previous winner and just led Holland to the World Cup final conceding only 3 goals and being named the GK of the tournament.

As for the Women's World11, I actually have an issue with the Americans. I realize that nothing has been happening for months but Heath did **** all at the World Cup and Rapinoe (luckily for her) only had a run of penalty kicks goals in the knockout rounds. If we're talking Americans, I'd have Lavelle, Ertz, Mewis, Dunn and Horan ahead of them. Not to mention a bunch of others worldwide.

Rumour: James Tomkins to WBA?

Daily Mail reports BFS could target James in January to bolster the Baggies defence.
How do we feel about that?
Given his age, fitness record and the fact we seem to be doing quite well without him, I think it could be a good opportunity to use maybe £10m to buy a younger promising CB.

Is Zaha down on pace?

Have to say that despite a terrific team performance last night I am very worried about Wilf. He doesn’t seem to be able to beat anyone in a 1-on-1 anymore. He rarely even tries unless he’s in the box. Sometimes when there’s space on the counter and in behind it would be nice to see him drive at the opposition but I wonder if it stems from lacking in confidence, and that is due to a loss of pace?

I appreciate the opening paragraph makes me sound like a Brighton troll, but I think enough people on here know how much I love Wilf, my favourite ever player, our greatest ever player and a Palace legend. It has been on my mind for a while this season, but the 50 yard sprint against the West Ham centre back where he tried to beat him for pace failed. Feeling particularly worried now, and I guess it had to happen eventually, but he’s just turned 28 and had no serious injuries so it feels a bit early. Obviously the touch, technique and decision making is still there, and the end product is much improved. He’s still a top Premier League player, and will continue to do well for another 7 years at the highest level due to quick feet and experience of the league. I just wonder if anyone else thinks the same? I know he surged past the Southampton centre backs on the opening day but they are particularly slow. That’s the only example I can think of where he’s shown any noticeable pace this season. The idea that he should go back to the wing is over as well, he’s too slow to play there now I reckon. Would appreciate other people’s thoughts.

Player Ratings And Reviews: West Ham 1-1 Palace

mercredi 16 décembre 2020

Bit of a 3 parter tonight. Really enjoyable up till their goal , we were playing great although Moyes made some tweaks at half time as we were definitely finding harder to shift the ball before the goal.

After the goal until the sending off we were like the palace of a few games ago - slow , ponderous, lacking any idea and Wilf getting more ineffective by the minute.

Final part was after the sending off where we were backs to the wall and did all the right things.

All n all a really enjoyable first half but glad of the point

Long shot - Wilf 2013 Brighton Play Off Tea Mug

This is a real long shot - but has anyone got a spare mug that they would be happy to part or sell depicting Wilf celebrating his goal against Brighton in the play off semi in 2013, great picture of him screaming with joy at the Palace fans.

I had one but put in in the dishwasher too many times and the picture faded.........:hmph:

No, nothing to do with Millwall. It's Palace. Watching the official FIFA film of the 1982 World Cup on BBC iPlayer, there's a person in a lion costume. On the back the slogan: 'Save Crystal Palace FC. Shoot Noades.'
Who was in the costume?

Ian Abrahams (The Moose)

I love some things about Talksport (Hawksbee & Jacobs, Brazil, Parry. McCoist etc) - although I know some people don't. I don't care about that.
But, what does grate is this idiot who works for them that they seem to try and turn into a "character", when he is a very poor reporter.

In Roy's press conference after the Spurs game, he seemed to ask some kind of question about the goal celebrations, the crowd and COVID.
I'm not sure exactly what it was as I couldn't hear it.
But Roy batted it away.

So I have 2 questions:

1. What was the question - and was it even a valid question?

2. Is this bloke a complete tosser?
The possible answers to question no 2 is:
(a) Yes
(b) A

Suggested Team and Formation For: West Ham (away)

----------------------------Guaita--------------------------------
Clyne-----------Kouyate------------Cahill-----------------PVA
Townsend------Milivojevic--------McArthur---------------Eze
------------------Zaha-------------Benteke------------------

Just the one change: Townsend for Schlupp. In their formation it's the wide players that are their main threat (without Antonio). I'd have Andros in the side to help Clyne with doubling up on Benrahma. AT works hard tracking back. Schlupp doesn't.

Also, Townsend is our best crosser (with Eze). I think he can supply more for Benteke. (Although, having said that, we would miss Schlupp's pace.) I'm sure we will be unchanged anyway. COYP. :p

Gerard Houllier RIP

Aged 73, very sad, great manager

Suggested Team and Formation For: Liverpool Home

Feel it's time to give the scouser's a thumping, their defence is truly rubbish without van dijk, Alexander-Arnold is just a poor man's Clyne, Robertson is decent for a Scot but that's about it, and the rest of them aren't fit to lace Gary Cahill's boots. Okay they've got a bit about them going forward granted with Salah/Mane/Firmino etc but with Zaha and Eze flying at them then they won't be able to cope. Who cares if they won the league last season, we didn't have Eze last season. let's go all out attack from the first minute and we WILL win this game.

Team: Unchanged

Score: Palace 6 - 3 Liverpool

Come on you Palace!

Corruption of officials

Corruption in the Premier League. It is now so entrenched that the officials no longer hide it. Today's "performance" by Kevin Friend was bad enough but I have just watched the highlights of the Andre Marriner show - Fulham v Liverpool. A cast iron penalty for Fulham which he denied despite a pitch side VAR review and he then awarded the penalty for Liverpool when the ball struck a players arm which was against his chest.

It's no longer inept. It's no longer a bias. It is corruption.

Why can it not be investigated by an independent outside body? It needs to be eradicated from our sport.

Buy British Buy local

Today I tried to buy an 8” general utility kitchen knife. I wanted to Buy a decent one for my son for Christmas. I had a £75 budget in mind. Could I find one? Could I bollox all made in China. Next bracket up gave me German and Japanese. The only british ones I could find were beautiful hand made ones at £300 odd. No wonder Sheffield is bottom of the league. How the hell are you supposed to buy this stuff if it’s not made here any more?

Player Ratings And Reviews: Palace 1-1 Spurs

There was so much to like about Palace's display today. Unlike Leeds and WBA where the gods were smiling, we played a big, physical, in form, organised team and went toe to toe with them.

A lot of people have mentioned balance on this thread because unusually for us we seemed to have plenty of options going forward and different attacking threats whilst being able to defend diligently and in numbers.

The attack firstly looked good because in Benteke, Wilf, Eze and Schlupp, we have a mixture of pace, trickery and an aerial threat and even a bit of poaching ability for our goal.
Schlupp might not be a right winger but he's an all rounder and as well as putting in a shift in midfield, he offers pace and he scores goals. he could have had another today as well.
We looked like we had options and were capable of asking different questions.

Luka had a great game and with McArthur we were solid enough in the middle. Again having Schluppy instead of Andros makes our midfield that bit better at defending and that's crucial. Schluppy can also defend like a full back if we need him too. Having Eze and Andros on the flanks would leave the midfield defensively light imho, there is a crucial difference.

The defence is probably the one area where questions are asked seeing Tomkins is surely a better centre back than Cheik and frankly i prefer Joel Ward to Clyne. I like JW because he can head the ball and supports his centre backs in lots of unseen ways. We are short of clean sheets at the moment and but for a heroic display by Vicente, we could have leaked a few more today. Having said that its the balance of the side we are talking about here and the defensive parts are largely interchangeable, we've lots of options and lot's of cover.

I think we all saw today that we had a very good team and we had a very good bench as well.
The display was probably as good as we have played in quite a while and we looked like we could be a match for anyone.

It was great to have a few fans there as well, can't wait for a full Selhurst again.

The fans today!

Easily deserves a thread of its own. 2,000 voices making the sound of 20,000.

Was simply in awe watching in it, especially the noise after kick off! Regardless of what you thought on the pitch... well done. :lux:

Crystal Palace line up Christian Kouame transfer with Fiorentina star set to cost £20million

The Eagles had the Ivory Coast attacker on their hitlist at the start of this year when he was with Genoa, but he chose to stay in Italy.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson has money to spend after failing to land Watford winger Ismaila Sarr in the summer.

Kouame, 23 — who would cost £15-£20million — has been in and out of the Fiorentina side and has only scored once this season. But Palace remain big admirers of his talents.

Sarr is still on the radar but the Hornets need him for their promotion push.

The Eagles want another scorer because Christian Benteke is out of contract next summer — the same time Michy Batshuayi goes back to Chelsea after his loan.

No DEal now likely says Johnson - A failure of statecraft and he should resign.

Johnson says tonight, a deal is not likely, despite all the implications, that are now well known and accepted, uniquely for the UK that will damage all of us significantly in the years ahead.

He owns this failure. He should have had the diplomatic and political skills to do this, as he promised back in December when he was given the confidence of the electorate to achieve this.

He has to resign, and frankly we need another general election to put a government and PM in place that will give us a deal that will secure all our futures in prosperity.

Should We Ban Headers ?

Given all the publicity about increased risk of dementia in both rugby and football, I see some people have suggested giving a trial run at some level of football of banning headers. Highly sceptical of how it would work, but then is the only alternative just accepting the increased risk of many players having dementia, brain injury and dying early? Any views ?

This sums are eye watering. How could anyone say that people with such wealth should not pay such a small extra amount? Indeed they should pay far more than 1% in my view.

It's incredible that we have a system, where even before covid, despite the huge advances in technology in the last ten years, that things have gone backwards and public services have been cut. How can that be possible?

We all know why, because the inequality is getting more and more obscene with huge increases in wealth for the super rich. Who have even got substantially richer during the time of covid.

---------Zaha-----------Benteke-----------Eze------------

Normally I'd switch Schlupp and play him on the left, but we need him to play close to Son, whichever side he is on, as he is the only player we have who possibly has the pace to live with him. Zaha, Benteke and Eze to cause them havoc. I actually think we have a chance in this one  :p

Plumbing Help - Shower Pump Issue

If anyone knows anything about shower pumps can you help?

We've just moved house. Previous owner wrote us a note which said that you have to turn on the shower pump at a switch on the landing, but you can't do it until the water is running. And then you need to switch it off on the landing before switching the water off, in case the pump motor burns out.

1- Is this true? Or is he being overcautious?

2- any way I can tell?

3- shouldn't it be wired to turn on when the water turns on? Is it incorrectly installed, and if so, should I get someone out to look at it?

Thanks!!!

Jordan Ayew

I currently think he is not playing well enough to start, but I think we owe him a lot. He cost , £2 million?, and he has worked his socks off, and shown considerable skill. He has lost his way a little over the last few games, but let's hope he gets his mojo back as we need him playing as he was.
Really just a thank you to a player I thought was not a good buy.

Material for Volume 6 of the Origin of Crystal Palace FC

I’m making my annual appeal for material for next year’s volume of the club history.

Volume 6 will cover the period from 1915, with the club based at Herne Hill, through WW1, to Palace’s move to the Nest in 1918.

If you have anything relating to the club which is of interest in this period, please reply to this thread or PM me and I should be delighted to hear from you.

For context, the previous five volumes, available on Ebay, are:

Volume 1. 1861 to 1895. The formation of the amateur Crystal Palace FC by the Crystal Palace Company in 1861. The enormous contribution of the amateur Crystal Palace FC in the creation of Association Football. The Crystal Palace Company’s decision to shut down football as one of the attractions in the Park in 1875.

Volume 2. 1895 to 1909. The re-start of Crystal Palace FC in 1895 to accompany the building of the FA Cup Final Arena. The Crystal Palace Company’s ten-year battle with the FA to allow a professional club in the Cup-final stadium, and the FA’s agreement in 1905. The creation of the professional Crystal Palace FC.

Volume 3. 1909 to 1912. The court-ordered liquidation of the Crystal Palace Company, its rescue by the Earl of Plymouth, and the effect of this change of ownership of Crystal Palace FC. The attempted boardroom-coup in the football club. The growth of Croydon Common as Palace’s local professional rivals.

Volume 4. 1912 to 1914. The initiative for a public buy-out of Crystal Palace Park falters, and Palace’s home ground is in peril. Palace mature to become a leading club in the Southern League and Champions of London.

Volume 5. 1914 to 1915. Palace are evicted from Crystal Palace Park by the Admiralty. The club’s move to the Herne Hill ground. Details of the fate of every Palace player in the First World War.

The Royal Mail is moving VERY slowly at the moment so I recommend acting immediately for any Christmas orders.

Ryanair buys 75 Boeing 737 Max's - Would you fly in one?

In the FT this morning it said that Ryanair have given Boeing a lifeline and have purchased 75 of the planes that crashed on two occasions following several design, technical failures, and pilot training deficiencies, that led to the accidents.

That move means, at least for me, no more travel with Ryanair. I am simply not happy to fly on a plane that was an old design, modified so that in the interests of cost, new larger engines could be bolted on that can cause an additional risk of stalling, and only mitigated by the addition of sensors and patched up software, to correct it.

The new regime of additional pilot training where it was lacking before, is obviously welcome, but would you want to fly on a plane that had an intrinsic design take off stalling problem?

Hello guys and gals,

I know the BBS probably isn't the obvious place for a thread like this but often there are quite a few helpful and knowledgeable posters and really I'm just after a bit of advice.

Basically the wife and I have had new phones on contract for about 6 weeks now. The wife's previous phone was an iPhone XS, which again we received from EE around October 2018ish time, and she decided to sell it on Facebook Marketplace (against my better judgment I might add!), anyway the chap turned up, looked the phone over, called his wife using his sim (we assume his wife), all happy, pays the wife the money. Now this phone is pristine, never been dropped, never been in water, never been repaired or altered in any way. Arrived sealed in its box from EE and so on.

So now the guy has been calling etc since Tuesday evening claiming the screen is a replacement screen, and he wants his money back. We have tried to tell him it is as it was brand new, but he keeps on. He sent me a video Wednesday of him and his wife visiting the Apple store at Westfield, he showed a staff member who said the screen is a replacement and he should be careful buying online because of scammers (I will be contacting Apple about this separately as that is a piss take and I expect them to take action). Anyway I said to this guy, come to an Apple shop with me then and we will get it verified (on advice from our own visit to the shop in Kingston yesterday), otherwise feel free to call the police if you really want.

Now I have an appointment booked Saturday to meet him at the Apple store, which is fine I know the phone as sold to him was real. But what has been going over in my head the last day or so is basically that he has had the phone 3 days already. He could easily have swapped the phone, or the screen himself in that time, plus the wife never took down the serial numbers of her phone.

I'm a little unsure of what to do, or what to expect if I am totally honest. Mates from work were telling me to just block him and not turn up, but he knows our house. To be honest whatever is said by Apple I know the phone my wife had and sold was real and as was on Day 1, so this dickhead won't be getting any money back regardless, but just after some advice, plus is there any legal standing with regards to this? I've never used FB marketplace so I don't know how it all works. The other thing I should add is that the payment was made on PayPal.

Cheers everyone,

LE.

An age old question

mardi 1 décembre 2020

Should you leave your PC on 24/7 or just fire it up as needed then shut it down when done?

I've been doing the later ever since I've had a computer, but starting to think leaving on 24/7 would be less frustrating. Many times a lot of background "stuff" seems to happen when I turn it on slowing the damn thing to a halt.

Looking at various settings it would seem a lot of updates and back-ups would happen in the middle of the night is the PC was left on.

I guess I'm old school where anything electrical had to be turned off when not in use (goes back to putting shillings in the meter under the stairs).

What is the wisdom of the BBS say on the subject?
