Seven Year Old SAT's set to be scrapped ...

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

Controversial national tests taken by seven-year-olds in England could be scrapped under new government plans. The move follows years of pressure from teachers, parents and educationalists opposed to putting young pupils through high stakes national Sats tests.
The statutory tests in English, maths and spelling and grammar, are used to monitor schools' progress.
The Department for Education is proposing a new assessment for pupils when they first start school instead.
This should be done in such a way that pupils do not realise they are being assessed, the DfE said.
I'm torn on this one. My six year old is doing these next year. He doesn't seem to have been put under undue pressure so far, even though the curriculum is apparently tougher. Seems to mainly enjoy school, as much as any kid does. We just had parents evening, where we were told not to worry too much about the test, as they were mainly to check the school was doing its job.

We were also told recent changes had made highly unlikely that most children would be told they are exceeding national average, which was annoying as my son is doing very well, and is apparently well above average at the school. Other than that though, I don't personally have any real objection to the tests.

I understand that seven year olds should be learning to enjoy learning and not put under stress - I'm just not convinced that if the tests are done in the right way and reacted to in the right way by parents, that they should cause any undue stress on the kid.

Suggestion: Jean Michael Seri

Clearly the midfield needs bulking up in the summer, this man out in Nice in France has been unbelievable. He's only five foot five but he's similar to Kante in his playing style. He's a very quick, powerful box to box player who can definitely play. And he's only 25. I'm quite sure another year and a big club will be in for him.

With him next to Luka not many midfields will get the upper hand over us, it'd take some real quality I'd believe to get through those.

I just feel at times this season we get overrun too easily, even under Allardyce through the middle. And with the rumours of Cabaye leaving this summer as I said the midfield will need bulking up.

Not sure if anyone's seen him on here but from what I've seen he's some player.

Don't get sick

Announced this morning that NHS is abandoning the government's target of a maximum of 18 weeks waiting time for important pain relieving operations:

"Clare Marx, president of the Royal College of Surgeons in England, said the delays could have more serious consequences.
"For hip and knee replacement, it is very painful and very demoralising," she told BBC Breakfast.
"But our concern is not only for hip and knee patients but those patients who perhaps are waiting for heart surgery.
"For them, sometimes waiting for surgery may be a part of a pathway where they may have a heart attack whilst they are waiting.
"Or maybe they are waiting for brain surgery or gall bladder surgery, and all of these are extremely serious matters [but] still fall within the whole remit of planned surgical care."

So they are recommending a kind of DIY approach, like stop being obese.

Well, we are doing a bit of DIY on our village road which is in a third world condition, so I suppose it is a consistent approach.

I have scalpel. Cataracts anyone?

Really nice article on Andros - very open and honest. Always seemed a nice bloke, but the fit wasnt right under Pardew.
AT admits he wasnt trying hard enough, but seems v happy under current management - speaks highly of Sammy Lee - and wants to stay here for several years.

Still think he has a lot of work to do on decision making but happy hes commited to us now. Personally think hes been the player i hoped we had signed ever since BFS came in. Maybe with time can become more appreciated by palace fans - he puts in a good shift now which is always a good start.

I hope it's ok to start another thread.

As part of my fundraising efforts for the wonderful Contact a Family charity (you know, the whole cycling to every match thing) we're organising a Race Night at Cheam Sports Club in Cheam for 12 May.

Worries about personal privacy

mercredi 29 mars 2017

Sorry but don't think this is appropriate to just put on the computers/gaming thread as it's relevant to probably everyone.

Given the amount of information that's being collected through our smartphones, computers, TV's, cars, toasters etc. What concerns do people have that:

1. That people don't really understand how much they are and will potentially be manipulated?

2. Where this will lead from either a commercial but especially a social and freedom point of view?

3. Where does this ultimately lead us?

Where to emigrate to?

Several ardent Brexiteers have suggested to me that those who favour remaining in Europe should leave the country if they don't like Brexit.

Farage himself now seems keen to work, and perhaps live, in the US and has certainly said he would emigrate if the UK detiorates post Brexit.

Well, given our rights to live and work in Europe have been lost, where should we actually move to?

Having lived in Barcelona in the 80s, I had always half thought of moving to Spain but am now looking East to Thailand, Vietnam and Burma.

As a site full of expats, BBS suggestions on the how, why and which country to move would be much appreciated

Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad documentry

Who's going to be watching this tonight?

Seem like a good (if not difficult) documentary and football clubs aside, must have been horrendous for him and their children. I'm sure there are BBS's that have lost their parents early in life to the dreaded cancer.

In May 2015 Rio Ferdinand lost his 34-year-old wife Rebecca to cancer. A year on, he is still trying to come to terms with this loss and its effects on him and his three children. This film follows Rio as he meets other families coping with bereavement and looks at what help is available for parents and children who have experienced loss.

injured players on international duty

dimanche 26 mars 2017

Anyone know if any of our players have been injured .

Forest's F1 experiences of the 1980's

i thought I'd post this for any oldies like me , who have an interest in F1. A tad self-indulgent (and a bit dated), but may also spread a bit of humour.

I will update in further posts.

At the age of 18, my step-brother takes me to Brands Hatch in 1986 for the British GP. The cost was £16.
Watching the cars thunder round the track as break-neck speed was highly impressive during the practice sessions. Though the track seemed a bit narrow, with limited overtaking opportunities.

On the Sunday at about 5am, we arrived at Paddock Hill bend, but it was already packed. So we legged it round to Surtees bend and found a nice spot at the front.
My initial thoughts about the track were realised , when there was a massive pile-up on the first corner.

However, eventually Nigel Mansell ended up winning and this was the start of my romance with F1.

We had a history...

Of polls on the BBS. James would always get the vote for worst mod. He would be gutted now, what was a shoe in is screwed, he would probably get the third best now after Les and Tak. The new mods are shocking.

MAME

Does anybody here use it for there emulation? I used jnes and others but wanted everything integrated into hyperspin.

Anyhow after a long time of pissing about with different MAME versions and ROMS I finally have a couple of games on the go (but without using HS as the frontend) the only trouble I have now is configuring my DS4 controller to work with MAME (although I gather I might have to piss ass about doing the same in hyperspin).

I do have it working but don't exactly know what the button layout should be.
Does anybody else here use it this way? and if so are you able to send me a config file or walk me through setup.

1971....Leicester v Palace

On our side [Leicester] A Debate is going on regarding the season 1970/71 and 1971/72....Filbert Street saw mass hooliganism around Easter with home games against both Derby and Notts Forest....our club decided enough was enough and sectioned our Spion Kop into 4 pens 1-4.....in the new season 1971/72 we played Palace at Filbert Street and one of the first home games was against Palace....was it the first?........Did anyone come on up to Leicester for this match and was it in September or October?..........its a very interesting debate as theres other stuff being spoken about as 2 of the kop leaders G AND C both took their mates over to the Popular side to watch games which was then standing .....Palace fans of the 80's would know the Popular stand as the East Stand side of pen 1.......any memories ?

Captains Courageous

Musing on the impact of 2 of our recent signings, Sakho and Milvojevic, and considering the impact they have had on the rest of the team and not just as player upgrades but improving the performance of all the other players in the side.
I started to think of what other players, since the early 90's have had a similar impact with their leadership and other qualities, even if they weren't captains.

The obvious candidates are Thorn, Young and Martyn their arrival turned what was a disastrous start to the season into one of the most successful periods in our history.

The following list are my suggestions for such players:

Geoff. Thomas : The thread title says it all

Lombardo : Thorough pro. and world class player

Michael Hughes : Dynamo, must have been special in his prime

Rhiilahti : Similar to Hughes

Popovic : As coach and player

Clint Hill : Hard man, we were never bullied or intimidated
with him in the side

Glen Murray : Talisman, shame that injuries and A.P. shortened his career with us

Jerdinak : Another captain courageous

Delaney : His first 3 yeasr in the Premiership with us was a fairy story

There must be others and it would be interesting to hear from some of the older members about earlier eras.

Hitting 40 - what to expect?

In a month or so I'm entering the next decade of my life. The age when I was a teenager I thought was old. The age that my Dad took me to my first Palace match and yet I'm as old as he was then. Am I on the decline now, or conversely is life about to get exciting now I've left the 30's of young (ish) adult life?
Will I be officially middle age?
Am I going to become cynical, tut at everything and become less patient.

What are your experiences since you turned 40?

Chelsea game.

The films of Steve Bannon ...

This video, alongside various press articles if you can be bothered to seek them out indicate that Mr Bannon has a view that the world is due to have a catastrophic war that will reset the world. Not only does he expect it, but he desires it.

Now, he isn't obviously in power, but he does appear to have great influence over Mr Trump.

I'm interested to know how people view this. From my side, clearly I find this both worrying and disturbing. However, in light of views expressed regarding Brexit etc, I wonder if some of you agree with this? There have been sentiments expressed about leaving the EU, and about Trump's election that people hope for a destruction of the current regimes of power etc. Therefore do some of you think Bannon is right? Do you also hope for a 'reset' of the world?

If you do, do you have kids? Do you think the 'reset' will be damaging to you personally?

NAS Drive Lifespan

Been running a Buffalo LS-WVL LinkStation Pro Duo NAS since March 2013 as a home storage/backup system and after a brief power outage yesterday I received an error message saying that Drive 2 was on its way out and needed to be replaced.

This is now the 3rd drive I have had to replace since buying the system which in a 2 bay NAS seems quite high.

Should the drives last longer than this or is this pretty standard?

Any recommendations on replacement 3TB Sata 3.5” hard drives? I’ve stuck with Seagate so far but not sure if that was wise.

Thanks

Please Learn the Offside Rules

No, not Martin Atkinson, but the majority of you clowns in the crowd today.

The rule changed before this season, so the free kick is now taken from where the player touches the ball. So whilst you can't be given offside if you are in your own half, the free kick can be taken from inside it.

Match Updates: 18th March and Beyond

Arsenal 1 - 1 West Brom

Sanchez is so ******* good

Penalties

In the unlikely event that we are ever given another penalty,in our present predicament it is essential that it is scored. But who takes it? Is it going to be another stuttering Benteke run up, will we revert to Cabaye or are there other candidates? The pressure on Benteke would be enormous especially considering his goal drought, and I've never been impressed by those of Cabaye. I'm definitely in the 'hit it as hard as you can' school a la Jedinak, but have we got anyone to do this? Personally I would like to see either Zaha or Townsend, who can both hit the ball cleanly with power, but I don't think it will happen. I don't know if Luka has taken any penalties. It will be interesting to see who steps up should the opportunity arise.

Hissense internal cracked screen

Hi

I am looking for advice from anyone who has been in a similar situation?

Over the Christmas period, I purchased a Hisense 3300kw TV. Last week I turned it on to discover a white line down one side of the screen. I thought seeing as it was under 3 months, I would be able to get it repaired/exchanged under warranty. Hisense requested a photo of the screen to determine the damage and have come back saying that it looks like an impact on the screen "which is considered accidental damage and not covered by the warranty". There has been no impact since i bought it.

They are happy to send out a service agent to find out if there is no damage, but I've researched a bit online and everyone else in the situation says that the agent will just confirm what customer service already has, that the screen is cracked on the inside and it is not under warranty. And will charge you for the pleasure of this.

I'm at a loss for what my next steps should be...?

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you ever enjoyed watching Palace

jeudi 16 mars 2017

Having followed Palace since early 70 s , I am not sure that I have ever been at ease watching them . Always there is a strange churning feeling in my stomach that we will lose . Even now when I watch nearly all games either on tv or streams , I feel drained after the game . If we take the lead I am hoping the ref will soon blow for full time , regardless of when we scored .
Is this just me with Palace or are most supporters the same ?

Was Big Sam judged too quickly

Palace fans,

Birmingham fan here, write about football just interested in whether you think you'll stay up. Goals seem to be spread out more than when you went down with AJ, was impressed with Townsend's goal last week, he was decent for us on loan. Feel neutrals have been too quick to judge Allardyce when he didn't get results instantly, took time for Sunderland to put a run together last year. I think those back-to-back wins to nil could be important, Sakho seems to have made a big difference defensively.

All the best for the rest of the season.

Real Madrid to open Acadamy in Croydon

According to a report in the Sun, Real Madrid launch their new acadamy in South London next week. It is called the "social sports school" and will be based at the Cedars School.

"Kids aged 8 to 11 will be able to use the facility - targeted especially at the economically or socially disadvantaged"

Anyone think this might have an impact on our own academy?

England squad for Germany/Lithuania, Mar-17

Wow, this squad is horribly, horribly lacking in quality.

Fraser Forster (Southampton), Joe Hart (Torino, on loan from Man City), Tom Heaton (Burnley), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Man Utd), Michael Keane (Burnley), Luke Shaw (Man Utd), Chris Smalling (Man Utd), John Stones (Man City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Michail Antonio (West Ham), Ross Barkley (Everton), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Man Utd), Jake Livermore (West Brom), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Nathan Redmond (Southampton), Raheem Sterling (Man City), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton), Jermain Defoe (Sunderland), Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), Jamie Vardy (Leicester).

God help us at the next World Cup. Good luck, Gareth! :jerkit:

Things That Make You Go Hmmmm....

I was at the crib, sittin' by the fireplace
Drinkin' cocoa on the bear skin rug
The door bell rang. Who could it be?
Thought to myself then started to shrug
Got to the door. Ding Dong. Who is it?
My girl's best friend had payed me a visit.
Sly as can be, tight dress and all
She knew that I was faithful. I really didn't have the gall.
I tried to chill. She made the move.
Now I know my girlfriend wouldn't approve.
I didn't realize my girl was settin' me up
Yo, my girl didn't trust me. No!
Yeah, but she lost control I wouldn't take the bait.
I said chill baby baby chill baby baby wait
My girl bust in, Caught us creating a boom
She said "Girlfriend"?
Things that make you go hmm

Dutch elections

Word is that the Greens may have done very well and could end up having a substantial say in how the country is governed. I won't pretend to be an expert on Dutch politics, or any other sort, really, but I'm sitting here, rather pleased with that notion. I think Green politics have plenty to contribute.
I wonder if any other BBSer is quietly hoping that one of the Dutch parties has done well in these elections; and if so, which party, and why?

Top Gear

Does Top Gear have any relevance anymore? Whilst this seasons line up is an improvement over the previous one I think it still falls far short of the Clarkson, Hammond, May version and cannot hold a candle to The Grand Tour.

All that said Matt is growing on me even if his delivery is a bit wooden, Chris is OK and has a personality but I think Rory is a light weight and out of depth.

Flying High - Issue 10 - On sale v Watford

Having not played last week, I'm sure we are all itching to get back onto the Palace train and there is double cause for celebration as a new issue of Flying High will be on sale. Our little fanzine hits double figures with Issue 10 and there's plenty on offer inside the covers.

Priced at the usual £1.50, there will be sellers around the ground before the game this Saturday (March 18th) for the match against Watford. We will be selling from 1.45pm onwards, so make sure you find one of us and grab a copy.

Here's what to expect in the latest offering:
  • Losing our identity? - The argument regarding the loss of identity rages on but we have a very definitive viewpoint on the subject.
  • What's Soul got to do with it? - What is the soul of a club? Does it matter? Should it be compromised?
  • Big Sam's Biggest Test - With a stellar CV on pulling clubs out of trouble, has the new boss bitten off more than he can chew in SE25?
  • Queens Park Palace - When QPR tried to buy their way out of safety and went down, everyone laughed. But are Palace now in a similar siutation?
  • The Importance of Being Luka - Our Serbian maestro has won plenty of fans already, we discuss just why he is already so important to the team.
  • The view from afar - After having to give up a Season Ticket this year, has co-editor Brids found it more or less difficult with our form being so poor?
  • RedNBlue Army - Terence flew to New York and took in a Palace match Stateside. He writes about how surprisingly good it was.

We also have the usual gripes in Dave’s Moans, a very current Sh*t List entry, a possibly (definitely) made-up source's info on Big Sam's training techniques and some more brilliant photos from Michael Hulf.

Things to see and do in Amsterdam....

I'm off to Amsterdam on a bit of a jolly with work in May and was hoping some of you could give me some suggestions of what to see and where to eat, drink and be merry?

Cheers :p

Free ticket to London African Gospel Choir performing Paul Simon's 'Graceland' tonigh

I have a spare ticket for The London African Gospel Choir performing Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland’ album tonight. It’s at XOYO (a couple of mins walk from Old Street tube) – doors open at 7:30pm. I went to see them at Jazz Café (Camden) last week and they were immense – a very feel good gig.

Ticket is free for anyone who can definitely make it. Just drop me an IM and I’ll meet you in the Old Street area with the ticket.

Tory election expenses scandal - breaking

To view the link you have to Register or Login

There is growing panic in the Conservative party about the scale of police probes into election spending, which could affect dozens of MPs. A separate investigation by the Electoral Commission into whether the national party broke election spending limits is also under way and expected to come to a head within weeks.

The allegations, first uncovered by Channel 4 News and the Daily Mirror, are that spending in marginal seats on a battlebus tour and teams of party officials was wrongly recorded as national, rather than local spending. The penalties for wrongly declaring local elections are steep, with possible criminal charges for MPs and their election agents, and results can be declared void.

It is understood police could meet the Crown Prosecution Service as early as 21 March to discuss bringing a possible charge in relation to South Thanet, where Farage was narrowly beaten by Mackinley.

Ipod Classic

I've had my Ipod for about 10 years now and it has always worked perfectly, this morning on the way to work suddenly the music started playing through only one headphone (I've double checked the headphones) and it will play out of both when I remove the headphones half way out the jack.

Has anyone had this issue before? Will Apple still repair Ipods? ( I don't have the receipt or think I have ever registered it)

Or if it is finally goodbye to the greatest invention of all time, what replaced it? I can only see 64gb as the biggest MP3 players now :sob:

Ghost Recon Wildlands

The latest game in the popular Ghost Recon series, Ghost Recon Wildlands is now available and it does not disappoint in both the graphic, sound and gameplay departments.

The game involves taking down a drug cartel in Bolivia and you have to weaken all of the line of command before you get to take down the big boss.

You are part of a squad of 4 which can consist of you and and computer controlled squad members or public or private online players but there is no need to go online if you do not want to play with other online players.

You can also play co-op with a friend.

This is another huge open world game where you choose how you want to play and there are thousands of weapon customisation options to unlock and find as you level up.

There are many difficulty levels to match your ability.

To sum up this is another very big game that is one of the best of its type and if you like action or stealth games you will really enjoy it.

My score 10/10

Will it be a last day decider at Old Trafford?

There have been a few murmurs of late concerning the unpalatable prospect of being relegated by Manchester United. It would not, of course, be the first time, as they administered the coup de grâce in 1998 with a 3-0 win at Selhurst. But on that occasion we still had three more matches to play and it was no more than a mathematical rubber stamp. A last day knife-edge relegation at Old Trafford would be a different matter altogether.

But will we be facing that dismal possibility as we make our way apprehensively towards the theatre of potential nightmares, or will our fate have been sealed one way or another before that day dawns? We haven't had a last day decider since Peterborough at Selhurst in 2013 so the feeling that we're due one is difficult to shake off.

Extremely British Muslims. - Channel 4

What a great series.

One more to go and thus far its been extremely enjoyable and eye opening.

The person I've admired the most is Waz from program 2. I can see that guy getting into politics as he gets older and actually making a difference.

Anyone else seen this? If not, strong recommendation from me.

How do you feel about Sam, pre and post appointment?

How did you feel about Sam before his appointment 2 and half months ago and how do you feel now?

Has you opinion changed in any way?

Pre - Didn't really think he was that good and a very long ball, old style manager. I had him down to a hoof it and knock seven bells out of the opposition. I wasn't against his appointment though as we needed someone to come in and do a job and not take any shit.

Post - I've actually really warmed to him. He may not be 'one of us' (dreadful saying), but he's honest talking and his style of football is nowhere what I thought it would be. One thing I really like about him is that he identified exactly where we were going wrong and made it a priority to sort. Clearly it wasn't the ideal start to his reign but things are starting to look better all round and the players seem to be happier and more united again.

Yours?

CPFC DSA Appoint Julian Speroni As Their Patron

Last night Julian Speroni was in attendance at the CPFC DSA (CPFC Disabled Supporters Association) 1st Birthday Party held in Speroni's Restaurant at Selhurst Park and 100 disabled Palace fans and their carers were in attendance.

Julian came straight from the airport to the event where he was guest speaker and he also announced that he was delighted to have been appointed patron for the CPFC DSA group.

He fielded questions about his career and after the raffle then autographed free colour photos supplied to those in attendance by CPFC DSA admin who organised this brilliant event

Julian also posed for photos with fans and many selfies were taken by them.

In it's first year the CPFC DSA has gone from strength to strength and has given disabled Palace fans and their carers a voice within the club.

Membership of the CPFC DSA for disabled Palace fans and their carers is free.

Many thanks for the work the CPFC Disability Officer Pam Groves does for us disabled Palace fans and their carers and she was taken back when I gave her a Speroni autographed photo saying such.

Myself and Karen the CPFC DSA Press Officer organised this on the spur of the moment as a thank you for her work.

Hart has been told by Guardiola he is surplus to requirements and is not needed next season. If we stay up surely he would be perfect for us? English proven premier league quality. recommendations for domain registration please

Hi,

I have for years now had a domain registered with 'just-the-name' (run as part of Plusnet which in turn is part of the BT Group). The only reason I registered this was to establish a long term email address forwarding service that would allow me over time to use different ISP email services without constantly changing the email address.

Obviously I have the url available to run a website if I want to at any point but that isn't the point of it. Importantly Oodles of people now have that email address and I don't want it to suddenly disappear or worse still move to someone else.

Just the name have announced that they are closing the service and I have to look for a replacement. I have a year's registration left on the url/name but just the name will end in July and so I have to move it between now and then.

I am happy enough to commit to a further 9 years (the max is 10 I am told) to get the price and the only facilities I need is registration and very reliable email forwarding.

Any suggestions?

I have taken a quick look at a few already and frankly found it difficult to work out what the real ongoing price is and there is very little reference to email forwarding which I assume is because they would rather sell me email hosting services which I really don't need - maybe I am being thick.

I am sure you BBS gurus out there can point me at the best solution which I would appreciate. In the meantime I will keep digging for an answer as I want to get this sorted asap.

Thx

Volunteering in Kenya - Fundraising!

Where to start?

Well, I've been given the opportunity to volunteer in Kenya by Balloon Ventures and ICS. During my 10 week trip, I'll be helping entrepreneurs build and grow their businesses to help support the local communities.

In the meantime, I'll be fundraising £800 for Balloon Ventures and ICS so they can continue to support sending youth volunteers abroad.

As part of my quest to meet my target, one of the challenges I've set myself is to cycle to Amsterdam from East Grinstead (my hometown) which is roughly a 300 mile trip. I'll be doing this on April the 1st and arriving on the 5th.

If you could please donate any amount to my Just Giving's Page or share it with friends, family or social media it would be hugely appreciated by me and also Balloons Venture.

On a side note, I strongly suggest anyone who is 18-25 or has children between them ages to have a look at the ICS website. There are several organisations partnered with ICS who you can volunteer with around the world and be involved with several different causes. If you have any questions about it feel free to ask!

Len Saward RIP 1927-2017

Sadly the club has been informed by his son that Len Saward passed away on 7th March aged 89. Len was raised in Croydon and joined Palace from Beddington in March 1949 and it seems was with the club until the summer of 1951. He then played for Cambridge United, Newport County and Brentford.

Usually found in a forward position for the Reserves the majority of his nine first team appearances were at right-half. His debut was at Torquay on 19th April 1949 and his final appearance away at Plymouth on 31st March 1951 - his only goal earned a point in a 1-1 draw at Reading on 24th March 1951.

Some Palace fans may remember his younger brother Pat who played for Millwall and Aston Villa and was an Eire international.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time for them.

WASPI

Women Against State Pension Inequality

Today International Women's day and Budget day here in the UK, my wife who for the first time in her life at the age of "60 something" has joined a march in London to protest against inequality in pension changes and the inability of the DWP to provide the proper notice that women's pensions were to change causing many women to lose up to £42,000.00 in pension payments.

Failure to advise Women of the changes by the DWP has meant that many women have been unable to make the required changes to their retirement plans or increase private pensions accordingly.

While WASPI accept the changes to state pension were agreed by Parliament, they are asking for appropriate compensation be paid to those women who have suffered due to the DWP's mismanagement. Many of the women suffering this huge financial loss have been on low paid jobs and will struggle severely to manage a reasonable retirement with many serious implication's.

She is marching today in support #WASPI women on the national demo today - they want to see fair pensions for all women and compensation for the 7 years pension payments she and many others are being deprived of.

Some of you on the BBS will have wives who are suffering the same injustice, they like many women may not be able to afford the loss of pension rights. Many women who had career breaks to raise a family or look after an older relative do not enjoy the same company pensions that many men do. In addition while men's state pensionable age is also rising for my wife's age group, at a maximum the wait for a state pension will only be two years, where as for many women it is seven.

If your wife, mother of other female family member is suffering as many women born in the 1950's are then suggest to them that they join the WASPI movement. Thank you on behalf of my wife, a Palace fan of over 50 years.

If I want to work on a Wordpad document, I like to hide the Chrome stuff away to unclutter the screen (but without closing Chrome) - at the moment the only way I know of doing this is to click the minimise button on each of the six windows. On my iMac, there's a pull-down menu option to 'Hide Chrome'.

Rumour: Palace Linked With Inter Milan Defender Nagatomo

Match Updates: Midweek: 7th-9th March

80 sides have lost 5-1 in the first leg of the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Only 1 have overcome that and gone through.

Obscure tv programmes you watched

I used to watch a show called Propects about two mates set in south London I think trying to make a few quid.

Relegation Odds

Simon Gleave, Head of Analysis at @GracenoteSports comments that Palace's win at West Brom was the 10th biggest surprise of the season in the Premier League according to Gracenote Sports' Euro Club Index ratings (most of the top-10 are apparently Liverpool losing).

This combined with defeats for Sunderland, Hull and Middlesbrough has materially improved the chances of Palace staying up this Season:

Compare this to the rather dismal prospects before the last two wins:

This analysis takes into account recent form as well as the difficulty of the games to follow. We have to remember that in the last 11 games, we have to face each of the top six Clubs.

BROS

I was in the same year as these chaps at Collingwood School in Camberley, Surrey. They are as 'East Lundun' as Danny Dyer, or Dick van Dyke.
See the twins are trying to raise a bit of cash, but it's not going great

I used to sit next to Craig Logan during our Geography O level retakes.
(1986)

He said they had a record deal for a band called "Cities of Egypt" in 1986
He failed his O level, but I passed mine. :D and look where we ended up ?

I saw him and the twins moving from a terraced house on an estate, and a few years later I had reached the heights of dustman, and was collecting rubbish from their gated mansion.
And when I say 'rubbish', there was always bags of unopened cards, cuddly toys and loads of bunches of flowers. Binmans paradise :D

The twins were always arrogant thwats, and I threatened to batter both of them on one occasion at school. They melted. Probably afraid I'd mess their hair up :D

Amazing that such talentless fckwits can achieve so much

Which one of the 'top six' do you want to beat and why?

With the final third of the season here and still yet to play the top six. If we could beat at least one (hopefully more obviously), which one would you love to beat and why?

- Spurs (H) - no real rivalry as such and probably the most beatable if they have an off day.

- Chelsea (A) - Almost certain champions now and would be a great to put one over on them again in their own back yard.

- Arsenal (H) - Those bastards always have the beating of us and have done for decades. Surely it's our turn soon - probably my choice!

- Liverpool (A) - Always good to beat Liverpool and let's face it, it's not a rarity over recent years but Anfield is never easy.

- Man City (A) - Team worth hundred of millions and on their day when on form, arguably the best there is, certainly in this league.

- Man Utd (A) - The list is endless and why I would want to beat them - wankers!

Make your choice and your reasons.......

poll: if you could only keep one next season, who would it be?

Arsenal H.Its about time!

Last time we beat Arsenal at home Nov 10th 1979.1-0.A flukey Dave Swindlehurst effort in front of one of our biggest gates a huge 42,898 which put us 3rd in the top division! With their current troubles is it just me that thinks this could be our year to beat the Arse?

Florida Gulf Coast and the Keys

Been up and down the east coast of Florida down to Miami so know it fairly well.
Off to the Gulf side (Tampa) next week for 3 weeks and going all the way down to Key West.

Any suggestions of things to see/visit that I should do (the Mrs is going to be with me,so no naughty stuff of please )

Benteke carrying long term injury?

dimanche 5 mars 2017

Was listening to a podcast and they said Benteke snapped his achilles and that's why he isn't the player he could have been and why he didnt make it at Liverpool and why he's so much slower and less explosive now as that kind of injury never fully heals, has anybody heard this?

Townsend and Benteke

Do you think this could materialise into something bigger than just on the pitch frustrations?

I hope they are laughing about it off the pitch once the game is finished but that is 2 games on the trot that Benteke looks like he has had enough with him.

The goals from: 2 Top-class goals which is better!?

Absolutely beauties yesterday..

Townsend will probably make goal of the month. Anyone see the blood pouring from his hand!?

3 touches from close in half-waly-line. The back spin on the pass he creates is perfect for Wilf to bring down. Then he takes it down and smashes it perfect. Don't think most in world could defend against that. If you look at the last clip of it on here. You really appreciate it.

Can anyone stick a link up to the game?

Tomkins appreciation thread

Very skeptical to start with but since Big Sam's appointment his game has stepped up massively. Cool composed and solid. Keep up the good work tonkers.:p

confidence

What a difference a week makes.

players feel more confident as do we .

watford is equally massive as it will potentially give us a 4 - 6 point cushion going into the harder run.

Van Aanholt Injury

Hope it isn't too bad. Thank god we have a bit of a lay off and Schlupp as back up.

Was there any update in the post match presser?

The Big Sam Bounce has arrived... and it feels good!

:lux::lux::lux:

How are you feeling Pulis?

Wonderful result and I wonder how Pulis is feeling?

I make that 2-0 to Parish now...1) Court Case...2) Today's result

I wonder if Parish and Brighty went into WBA's exec lounge to shake their hands tonight? :lux:

It's all starting to come together

We've shored up the left back position, a defensive midfielder and a beast of an upgrade in Delaney and can start scoring goals again and keep clean sheats.

Ok I know Sams reign didn't start off the way he liked but he's had to address a hell of a lot of problems so hats off to him for that.

Is it time we start to see an upturn in our results.

Player Ratings And Reviews: West Brom (away)

Hennessey 7 One drop that will be highlighted, but some other decent handling and good kicking

Van Aanholt 7 Very solid, classy and hope his ankle is ok
Sakho 9 MOM The guy is immense
Tomkins 7 Rock solid
Ward 6 Defended well, but poor in possession

Milivojevic 7 protects the back 4 superbly, and excellent through ball to townsend

Zaha 8 Will have better games, and was tightly marked. But great run, control and lashed left foot finish boosts his mark
Puncheon 6 Below par again. Have given him an extra mark for being the captain of the winning team
Cabaye 7 Yes, great assist, but he gets an extra mark for lasting to 70 mins. Well done Yo. Each extra minute is a massive achievement.
Townsend 8 The workrate and tackling was first class. Poor finish when put in, but then made up for it with 90 yard run and finish. Well done Andros. Maybe that will shut the doubters up.

Benteke 7 Giving him an extra mark for not getting sent off. Isolated but led the line. Massive passion. Needs a goal.

Credit to the manager, bought well and we are finally getting the rewards. Massive massive win, but the job is not over - need another 3 points in a couple of weeks because after Watford it looks desperately tough. Still, would rather have points on the board and a hard run-in than the other way around.

Our support v West Brom

Take a bow the lot of you. Non stop since before kickoff. It's all I heard on TV the whole game:p

Chart of Palace's Results 2016-17

Saw a few people making these on Twitter for other teams so I thought I would make one for us. Puts a slightly more interesting view on our results... one point from the teams currently in the top 9 this season. Only won win against Stoke in the top 10 and that's when they were 20th if I remember right.

Our home form against the bottom 10 isn't so bad...

Financial Advice

Could anyone help with a quick financial question...

I am due 50k from another property which will be used to pay off some of my current mortgage. However I am on a fixed rate until next Sept with charges for overpaying...

What should I do with the money until then to maximise interest? I assume it is too much for an ISA?

Any help appreciated!

Who remembers Jack Bannister ?

A friend of mine knows Jack Bannister, and he said the happiest time of his career was with us. I certainly remember him as a reliable and and valuable member of the team in the 1960s.
He spanned the time of Dick Graham and Bert Head and could play anywhere in defence and midfield. Dick Graham signed him on a free transfer from Scunthorpe United after he started at West Brom Albion. I remember him scoring against Aston Villa away in our promotion season but after the signing of Roger Hoy and John Loughlan he moved to Luton Town. He
Had a good record of goals v Plymouth Argyle. Along with Brian Wood I think he was the best
Of the ex Albion signings.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ - Give hope to Carys - DIPG tumour

mercredi 1 mars 2017

Lads/Ladies, I don't normally do this sort of thing but a very close friend is going through hell at the moment with his daughter having just been diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a very rare and aggressive form of brain cancer.

The Palace family is usually amazing with this sort of thing so anything you can possibly do to either contribute or create awareness I would be really appreciative. Thank you very much.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

This is our beautiful 7 year old daughter Carys.

On 13 January this year, after a few weeks of unexplained headaches and sporadic vomiting, Carys underwent an MRI scan to (presumably) rule out the worst case scenario. Instead Carys was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a very rare and aggressive form of brain cancer found deep inside the brain stem, which sadly particularly affects young children.

DIPG is inoperable and there is no cure. The only treatment a child can expect is a course of radiotherapy, to help with the symptoms caused by the tumour in the early stages of this devastating disease. With radiotherapy the prognosis for recovery is less than 1% and life expectancy is 9 months to a year after diagnosis.

There are no words that can describe the complete and utter shock, grief and helplessness that our family felt when hearing this news. The sadness of the prognosis of this disease is completely overwhelming and we cannot imagine life without Carys. We cannot accept that our lively, beautiful, witty, kind and loving little girl will never grow up, or that her little sister Maya will have to live her life without the support and love of her wonderful big sister.

Carys was immediately put on a course of daily radiotherapy treatments, which ends in early March 2017. Although she is not aware of the terrible prognosis of DIPG, she has been so brave and is an inspiration to us all. Like any family finding themselves in this heartbreaking position, we are praying for a miracle.

One of the major obstacles to the effective treatment of DIPG is the blood brain barrier, which prevents the free passage of drugs from the bloodstream into the brain. To date, there is no evidence that traditional IV chemotherapy has shown any benefit to children with DIPG, plus they also suffer significantly with the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy.

Recently, a family member in the UK informed us about a ground breaking DIPG research trial in the UK, being led by Professor Steven Gill ( To view the link you have to Register or Login), a consultant neurosurgeon at the University of Bristol, along with Dr Stegios Zacharoulis, a paediatric oncologist. They are now leading the world in using a neurosurgical method of direct drug delivery to the brain called Convection Enhanced Delivery (CED). This method involves the surgical implementation of very fine catheters into the brain using a dedicated robot technique.

As CED delivers the appropriate drugs directly to the tumour, it bypasses the blood brain barrier. This technique has proved to be safe and there are some very promising signs that this method of treatment is proving effective, with few unpleasant side effects for the child.

Carys has been accepted into the DIPG CED research trial in London which is scheduled to start in April this year, but we now urgently need your help to fund her treatment, which will include CED brain surgery and the ongoing drug treatments.

This DIPG CED drug research trial is not only vital for Carys, but for all children with DIPG now and in the future. Carys is a blessing to her family and friends and we all desperately want to give her this chance, as we believe it is her only chance.

Please help us fundraise and spread the word, so we can help Carys; whether you can help raise funds through a sponsored activity, or by giving a direct donation, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Rachel, Jack and family.

20 Years Ago Today,Sir Steve's return as Manager (V1) 1.3.1997 Oxford Utd 1 Palace 4.

Dave Bassett's decision to defect to bottom of the Premiership side Nottingham Forest on the Thursday,Saw Sir Steve Coppell return to the helm the following day after Ray Lewington turned down the offer from Noades to manage the team.

The Saturday saw us visit Oxford Utd,Where goals from Dean Gordon (A collectors item header from a Muscat cross) A Dyer tap in following a corner,Hopkin, from a pass from Freedman & finally Dyer again from another Freedman through ball put us 4-0 up before Oxford got a consolation goal with a far post header from a cross.

Question.

Having just seen that part of the Season review it says that Ray Lewington picked the team for Oxford & that Coppells 'Proper' return was the 1-1 at Home to Leaders Bolton the following midweek?

Is that correct? As its not how I remember it!?

159:

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after
