Crystal Palace vs Portsmouth friendly details: Scoreline and who played revealed

Portsmouth played a behind-closed-doors friendly with Premier League side Crystal Palace this week.

With no game for nine days after the 1-0 defeat against Sunderland last Saturday, Pompey boss Danny Cowley was keen to get a friendly lined up ahead of the League One encounter with Charlton Athletic on Monday night at Fratton Park.

Pompey, therefore, arranged a game against Premier League opposition on Thursday, with the Blues taking on the Eagles in a match without fans in south London.

It gave Cowley the chance to give some game time to his new signings Ollie Webber and Denver Hume, with the former Crystal Palace goalkeeper lining up against his old side.

It was a 75-minute match that was played largely between senior professionals, with Palace not having a game this weekend with no Premier League fixtures taking place as part of a winter break.

Pompey used the game to play nine senior players for an hour, with the scoreline at 2-2 when Cowley made several changes to give young players some experience.

"For some of those players who have been short of 11 vs 11 exposure, they went to Crystal Palace and we played a really strong Crystal Palace team," he told Pompey's YouTube channel.

"They were pretty flat out and I think they had 11 boys who have all played in the Premier League this year, playing for them.

"So it was a great experience for our players and it was great that we were able to take nine academy players with us and they were all able to get game time and exposure playing against Premier League players.

"What a wonderful experience that was to see Premier League players right at the top of their game and what they look like, and realise and understand how good you have got to be to get to that level."

Reeco Hackett opened the scoring for Pompey before Palace hit back to take a 2-1 lead. However, Ronan Curtis equalised for the Blues, who also included Issy Kaba and Harry Jewitt-White in their side, alongside the likes of Curtis, Hume, Connor Ogilvie and Webber.

For Palace, it is understood that Nathaniel Clyne, Ebere Eze, Luka Milivojevic and Christian Benteke were among the players involved.

"We played a 75-minute game, nine of our senior players played 60 minutes," Cowley said.

"We scored the first goal, a good goal early on from Reeco [Hackett], they went 2-1 up, and then Ronan Curtis scored to make it 2-2 in the 60 minutes.

"Then we made some changes and gave some time to some of our young players. We had Issy Kaba and Harry Jewitt-White and for them to play the last few minutes was great for the youngsters' education."
