137:

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Advice on a house Insurance claim

A friend/colleague of mine has had his son, who no longer lives at home, cause crinimal damage to his house.

His son has been charged for this offence, however my friends house insurance is refusing to accept a claim, as the son is still on the electoral role at the family address and he cannot prove the son left two months ago.

However the local court have a different address for his son, but the insurance company refuse to contact the court for confirmation saying that the telephone number provided by my friend could be anyones !!!!!

Is the insurance company at it or is this common policy?

My friend and his wife are at their wits end as not only are they worried their son will come back and do the same again but also how much it is costing them. So far it has almost been a grand.

2022 Winter Olympics - Beijing

Quote:

Beijing defeated Almaty by a vote of 44-40, much closer than observers were expecting. (And the vote was done by paper ballot, after the first round of electronic voting wasn’t counted due to a glitch.) But in the end, the IOC decided to go with a country they know is capable.

Quote:

“It really is a safe choice,” IOC President Thomas Bach said. “We know China will deliver on its promises.”
Beijing will be the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics, though “host” is a partial misnomer here—while the indoor ice events will take place in the city, it barely snows in Beijing itself. The snow events will be held in Zhangjiakou, 120 miles away.
I guess we won't be able to stay at Stigma's house since Norway bowed out for Beijing to swoop in.

Happy Memories of James

Am listening to test Match Special with the crowd singing the boys home and was reminded of a thread from 2003-4 (I think).

So - my memory is that we were beating Burnley 3-2 and down to 10 or even 9 men.

On the match commentary thread the Late Great James started chanting "Stevie Kember's Red and Blue Army". And he then started getting everyone else to join in saying "Let's see the lads home". So the thread became a communal chant.

I could delete this as, in print, it doesn't seem as funny as it does in my head - but I don't know where the delete key is.

Has anyone else got any stories (moribund or otherwise) of James that they would like to share?

Rumour: Llorente

Juventus striker Fernando Llorente is attracting the interest of English Premier League duo Crystal Palace and Stoke City.

The 30-year-old Spain international has been linked with a move away from the Juventus Stadium since the current transfer window opened on June 1.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the former Athletic Club forward would prefer a move to England over a return to La Liga, with Palace and The Potters joining the list of club’s interested in signing the prolific striker.

Arsenal were hopeful of completing a deal for Llorente by the start of next week as Arsene Wenger attempts to add more power to his attack.

The Bianconeri signed Llorente on a four-year contract in July 2013 when his contract with Athletic expired. Llorente netted just nine goals during 45 appearances for Juventus last season.

Interesting award for goalkeepers

An interesting bit of data has come out on how cost effective goalkeepers were in the Premier League last season, and fresh from his testimonial season Julian Speroni has finished in the top 5.

The data comes from savings and investment firm Scottish Friendly and the award is the Super Saver Cup, which celebrates the skill and cost effectiveness offered by goalkeepers last season.

After making only 91 saves last season, Speroni still represented a great return on investment by costing £11,429 per save, good enough for fourth on the list. Burnley’s Tom Heaton led the league, costing £6,000 per save. By contrast, Premier League goalkeepers made a save once every 32 minutes, at an average cost of £87,407 a save to their clubs.

If you want to have a look at all the stats and compare other goalkeepers, they can all be found at Scottish Friendly's website.

What happened to Pablo Ibanez

While playing for Atleti, Ibanez was linked with the likes of Arsenal. He played 156 times for the club, before a season at WBA and a season at Birmingham.

He left Birmingham in 2013.

In his career he picked up 23 caps for Spain.

He is still only 33, but I can't see anything that says he has retired, trialed with anyone or anything really.

Does anyone know, what happened to Pablo Ibanez?

Official: Jerome Binnom-Williams signs for Burton on a season-long loan

What the title says.

Good move for him, important he plays regularly. Not sure about him as a LB as he struggles a bit with positioning among other things, but he's a good player nonetheless, just struggled a bit with Southend.

Discussion: New striker

Do we need another striker? I personally think we definitely do. Murray and Bamford are good options but one's in the thigh light of his career and the other hasn't played in the division before. The rest aren't a great fit in our system.

Is Austin still a goer? Looks like Gestede is on way to Villa who are signing a team of strikers.

I don't want Cisse, we don't need his type at our club. Ramos would be good but that appears no more than speculation.

Is it worth taking another punt on a championship player? I like the look of afobe.

Hampton & Richmond Borough 1-1 Crystal Palace XI | Pre-Season Friendly

mercredi 29 juillet 2015

Hampton & Richmond Borough 1-1 Crystal Palace Development Squad

Hampton & Richmond Borough 1-1 Crystal Palace Development Squad Pre-Season Friendly Highlights are available on my site Football Exclusives.

From Croydon Advertiser website: -
Palace were arguably second best throughout the contest against the non-league side. And their equalising goal came from a player whose name didn't match up against that of the teamsheet.

Reise Allassani went on a storming run inside the opening ten minutes, picking up the ball in his own half and bursting through the middle before taking on the last Hampton defender.

But he was snuffed out on the edge of the box and the chance was gone unfortunately.

A sad passing

Today I discovered that the young Daughter of a friend of mine has died. She was 35 and has young children.

She used to play with my own daughter when they were young and it really makes you realise just how lucky you are. They are the same age.

It appears that on Saturday she banged her head. In the early hours of Monday morning she was rushed into hospital but she was declared brain dead and had her life support switched off yesterday.

This is why the emergency services put such great care into protecting necks and heads and asking several questions when a head injury is involved.

Sadly it appears there was no indication that she had a bleed so she never attended A and E. She may have had a headache which she suffered with and never said anything.

I suppose the reason for this post is to make you aware that you should keep an eye on anyone that you know has banged their head and if you bang your head yourself then go to A and E if you get any symptoms.

Sir Peter O'Sullevan, RIP

Amazed no one has started this thread, one of the finest ever commentators in any sport. Lived to 97 so a great innings, and it will take someone very special to replace him. Also a great campaigner for safety and welfare in racing.

Recap of the Summer for those Uninformed

I'm still new to being a fan of Palace.

Full Disclosure: I was totally shocked today to find out the season starts a week from Saturday. No longer do i just have to sit around for the NFL season to start.

I figure there have to be a lot more casual fans out there like myself.

I've checked the forums a few times, read about some of the signings, and kept waiting for Dwight Gayle to sign with another club. But it hasn't happened yet!

So I wanted to start a thread for the uninformed. In big picture, what's different from last year? What do you think the goal is?

I think we shoot for a spot in Europe. Aiming for the top half of the league isn't lofty enough.

And what is a good website to see the stats for the preseason games?

3d XPoint (New PC Memory Technology)

Still haven't replaced your old hard drives with SSDs yet?

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

Think your solid state drive is blazing fast? Then prepare to be amazed by the new storage system being proposed by Intel and Micron, which promises speeds that are one thousand times faster than current NAND Flash memory.

The new type of memory, called 3D XPoint and pronounced cross-point, is said to be 1,000 times faster in both read and write than NAND, as well as being durable and dense. In fact, CNET reports that it’s ten times more dense than NAND memory, allowing it to squeeze more capacity into the same physical size while remaining energy efficient—and “affordable”, though it’s open for debate what the latter may mean.

Intel and Micro claim that the new type of memory can be used as both system memory and non-volatile storage, suggesting it can be used to replace both RAM and SSDs. At first computers will use PCI Express to interface with the memory, but Intel claims that such a connection won’t be able to deliver all the speed benefits of the new memory, so new motherboard architecture will be required to make the most of XPoint.
To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

For those eager to see 3D XPoint in action, you’ll have to wait. Crooke said the manufacturing has only recently been moved from a research line in Micron’s Boise, Idaho fab to an Intel production fab in Utah. The firms will provide sample wafers to customers by the end of this year and the chips would be in actual products shipping to customers in 2016. My expectation is that big name data center customers such as Facebook, Baidu, Amazon or Microsoft will be the first ones to put something like this through its paces to see if they can find a home for the new technology.

Discussion: CPFC...sellers or buyers

Since my Father first took me to Selhurst in 1956, when I was an 8yo, and to the same GrandStand where, a season ticket holder, I take my GrandSons...
In all the intervening years we have acquired or groomed much talent (you know who I mean) and sold it on, mainly because we had to.
CPFC2010 is doing a great job, in my view, and if we don't need to sell, we should not.
And I look forward to being excited by our Mr Bolasie until such a time as it is impossible to resist the daft offers which abound in this SkyFest.
Is there any talent left in La Liga, et al? Diminishing because they are all overpaid and over here!
Do England have the talent to win the World Cup...of course not. There are insufficient places for our own to learn their craft at the top level in the UK.
Can CPFC win a trophy under Pards...I think we can, but maybe not this season.

Pro Evolution Soccer 16

Thought I might as well start a thread. Looking decent thus far. Not a whole lot of information released yet, but apparently Konami have a few more licences this year so fingers crossed it's something decent, maybe even the Championship, and now some crap like the Taiwanese Premier League. :moo:

A few early comparisons to FIFA 16 reckon this might be the better game this year, if you can see past the Licensing, and if on a next gen console lack of option file issues.

Rumour: Emanuel Adebayor

Don't know if anybody else heard, but when Harry Redknapp was on Talksport this morning he said that Palace were interested in Adebayor.

Which GK should start at Norwich?

Assuming all 3 are still here, who would you start?

While McCarthy and Hennessey have not impressed in very limited pre-season action, does that override the majority's view at the end of the season that Speroni should be No. 2 this year?

I am equally interested in who people think WILL end up starting at Norwich because for the vast majority of us, we simply have not seen enough of McCarthy or Hennessey to adequately judge.

How things change - Shanks

Just read Shankly's request to the Liverpool Chairman to retire and take his pension (copy was tweeted by Aldridge who was a big fan). Oddly the BBC reprinted that, address and all (it had been tweeted already but ....) and I could resist taking a sneaky at Shanks pad.

Call me crazy but I am guessing Brendan is living in something slightly larger and God knows what Palace or two Gordon Taylor must have.

BRIGHTON

I'm bored can we simply ban, and destroy, all mention of the south coast prats?

Dwight Gayle's Free Kicks

Why do we let him flight in these indirect FKs in good positions? He so regularly overhits it to the keeper and beyond... It has been frustrating to watch in pre-season and happened a lot last season.

Am I out of line? Surely there a couple of players who should be higher up the order!

BT / virgin / Sky etc and price rises

Thoughy this might be useful for in case anyone was not aware of this.

If you are on a fixed term contract and the provider puts the price up during that contract (as BT have announced today they are doing), providing you tell them you want to cancel within a certain period of time you can walk from that contract with zero termination charges.

nice, huh.

bye bye 24 month BT contract - hello some other provider.

Official: Ryan Iniss joins Port Vale on season-long loan

Would make more sense to bump the old thread IMO but in keeping with the sticky at the top I'll start a new one.

As the title says, Inniss to Vale for the season. Good move for him, time to get some regular matches and impress again. There were rumours that his agent dicked Palace about wrt the % of his wages Vale would pay, but this seems to put those to bed.

Also think more young players will head out on loan

Discussion: Striker or center back

We got a pretty decent squad but in order to guarantee staying up we oughta sign one more starter
Lets say we can only sign one. With tv money goin up considerably next year, we should really go out on one player like we did with cabaye
Which one would you prefer?

I say give muzza one more year. We got decent back ups in cham and bamford too. Besides muzza and our other attackers work well together

So cb for me, preferably one that is quick

Which one do you guys prefer (and who)

Jordan Mutch to Suprise a few.

Judging by his performances in the pre seasons I think Mutch might be a very important player this year. He has looked fitter and sharper plus I like his powerful runs through midfield with the ball. He pulled the team forward a lot this pre season and I really hope he proves the doubters wrong.

Why connect a car to the internet?

To view the link you have to Register or Login story - which resulted in Chrysler recalling nearly one and a half million vehicles - fascinated me.

The result of their work was a hacking technique—what the security industry calls a zero-day exploit—that can target Jeep Cherokees and give the attacker wireless control, via the Internet, to any of thousands of vehicles. Their code is an automaker’s nightmare: software that lets hackers send commands through the Jeep’s entertainment system to its dashboard functions, steering, brakes, and transmission, all from a laptop that may be across the country.

What I am struggling to understand is why it's now thought that connecting anything and everything, from cars to toasters - to the internet is somehow a good thing. What am I missing?

MLS USA Football

dimanche 26 juillet 2015

Just watching New York City scoring a 5th to make it 5-3 against Orlando seconds after Kaka came inches away from making it 4-4. Stunning game and Pirlo and Villa playing well. Every goal was good as well and New Yorks last game was 4-4.

Is the football generally poor and the goals being scored purely because of the great players scoring against more amateur players or is the league actually quite good now.

Either way I'm hooked and enjoy watching it which is the main thing, never thought I'd say that. The few drinks I've had helps though :p

To be fair I don't think I will be watching it as much when the Spanish and England leagues start up again but it's given me some good entertainment through this footballing drought.

Match delayed by swarm of bees

Quote:

A football match was delayed at Oldham Athletic on Saturday after unwanted visitors swarmed around the goalposts.

A queen bee had attached herself to one of the posts, causing the penalty area to become hive of activity.

The referee suspended the start of the friendly with Blackburn Rovers until some beekeepers arrived.

The club tweeted: "The Bee team has just left the pitch", while Blackburn's twitter feed read: "Un-BEE-lievable scenes here."

A club spokesman said: "We are very grateful to the local bee society who arranged for a beekeeper to come along and clear the bees."

Rovers won the game 2-0.

Climate change nut job

I'm a skeptic about climate change driven by humans, I freely admit it.

However, leaving that aside, I was intrigued to read about a conspiracy theory today which alleges that 3 scientists investigating climate change who died within a few months of each other "may have been assassinated".

"Hmmm, sounds interesting" I thought, only to find on checking out the details that one had died after falling down the stairs, the second after being in collision with a lorry whilst cycling and the third after being struck by lightning.

On what planet, even a melting one, would someone have to reside to think that these deaths could be anything other than co-incidence?

Discussion: Summer transfers - so far so good ?

Today's Observer looks at all the transfer activities in the Premier League to date and comments:
"... the business Chelsea have actually conducted does not quite look the most astute of the summer so far. That honour belongs to Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace, who has signed only three players to date but in Yohan Cabaye and Patrick Bamford may well end up with the Sir Alex Ferguson prize for value in the market. Bamford did enough at Middlesbrough last season to suggest he is ready for a bigger challenge"
The article concludes, that Manchester United transfers " win the entertainment award, but Palace, living in the real world on a much tighter budget, remain ahead on cleverness."

I just ran a search that I often run and only got returned results from 2004? Very odd.

Basically search my username and "Show posts" so I can see if anyone has replied to anything I've said - but it seems to just be returning 40 posts from way back.

Hey all,

I wanna get a jacked up new Macbook Pro, boosted to 2.9 GHZ with 16GB so it runs smooth for video editing. Is there anywhere that does decent deals or is the Apple Store my best bet here?

Virgin Atlantic up in the air

vendredi 24 juillet 2015

Did anyone watch it? There was a guy in his 60's called Tom working at Gatwick. Who used to play for Palace in the 60's and said he played against Tottenham on Boxing Day against Jimmy Greaves, Mullery, then played Chelsea at home and got beat 1-5 which looking at the records looks like 27/12/1969.

Then he said he broke his leg at Rotherham aged 21 and that was the end of it.

Anyone remember him?

Palace Xl at the Dripping Pan, Lewes FC Aug 1st

Lewes FC host a Palace Xl at the Dripping Pan next Saturday (August 1st), kick off 3pm. It would be great to see some of the BBS again - I know that some of you come down to the Robert Eaton game every year, and I remember a couple of years ago Palace played here at the start of the Promotion season and there were a few hundred who came along including CPFC 2010...Come and stand on the terraces, enjoy a pint overlooking the Sussex Downs, and if I have any left I'll offer the first six who respond one of our Beach Huts to watch the game!

It's only £6 (kids go free), here's the poster for the game:

Look forward to welcoming you to the Dripping Pan!

Palace fans in Maryland, USA

I'm wondering if there's any Palace fans in Maryland. I need the benefit of your experience.
I arrived in country last weekend and will be working here for 2.5 years. My dilemma is choosing between Annapolis & Baltimore as somewhere to live and I pretty much need to make a decision by tomorrow.
I've always liked Annapolis and planned on living here but my mate who's been here a couple of years suggested trying Baltimore.
With Annapolis I'll be part of a closer community with the waterfront living. I've already met some of the expat community & found a decent sports bar to watch the English footy.
What I like about Baltimore is that it has the train link to DC. I love watching sports and going to gigs, so Baltimore gives me better access to that.
So I'm after advice from anyone who knows the area and particularly what's good & bad about Baltimore. Is there an ex-pat community in the city and will I be able to watch the footy & rugby anywhere?
I'm in the city today looking at apartments in the Fed Hill and Fells Point areas.
Cheers.

The Shemitah

Does a mystery that is 3,500 years old hold the key to what is going to happen to global financial markets in 2015? Could it be possible that the timing of major financial crashes is not just a matter of coincidence?

For all conspiracy theory lovers out there: To view the link you have to Register or Login

For what it's worth I think the guy makes some good points mixed in with a lot of over-exaggerated stuff too.

Interested to know if anybody has heard of this before and whether many others think that something big (in the fianancial world) is looming and not far away?

Intl firsts?

In the last year, Appiah in the AFCON final, Jedi in the Asian Final and now it looks like Mariappa in the Gold Cup final, shows how far the club has come.

Academy

Are we investing any of the millions in the academy or not? The current facilities are nowhere near the standard of a PL club?

I have heard this from many young kids/players/scouts.

Are we now solely focused on PL money being reinvested in the finished article? All the academy needs is loose change from the £80-£100m we currently get.

Losing the next Wilf, Nathaniel or Johnny Williams to Charlton Brighton or AFC Wimbledon would hurt big time but thats what's potentially happening now.

Why didn't *player name* play more?

Darren Patterson.

My memory of his Palace career is patchy. The confrontation and resulting red card with Roy Keane sticks in the memory but he seemed a good strong CB no?

Sandra Bland

Has anyone seen the story about this young woman? There are so many things about it. A traffic incident starts off in mundane fashion but then it begins to go very awry.
First, there is the issue of how to interact with your fellow human beings- the police doesn't seem to respect the woman. She loses her cool with him. He escalates the situation. The whole event becomes blown out of all proportion. The ending is tragic and she ends up dead in a police cell in suspicious circumstances.
Second, the whole doctoring of film from the dashcam.
I have watched all the edits, loops, cuts and about half of the whole film (52mins). My internet is playing up and it is taking an age to watch the film. However, from a film point of view, the case is incredibly interesting as it illustrates near perfect, how editing can affect public perception of video.
Third, the issue of racism is obviously up for discussion and rightly so. Texas has a lot of form and apparently this part of Texas has more form than most.
However, there is the issue of gender too. As some have pointed out, Sandra Bland is taller than the policeman which can have played a role in the escalation. Provocative sexist language is used and this adds to an already explosive situation
Fourthly, the back stories of the two figures may well have played a role. Sandra Bland was on her way to take up a new job when she was stopped. The policeman had only been in the job for a year having previously been an ice cream salesperson. You can sense that there is a rising sense panic in both parties as the situation escalates, perhaps understanding that what should have been a routine ticket could end up with both of them having their careers on hold.
I am loathe to take a strong position on it even though there is a thoroughly tragic ending. I do think the policeman should have understood he was dealing with a member of the public and lacked professionalism. I also think Sandra lost her head(understandably in the face of provocation). The message I take out of it is to think before saying or doing something that might inflame a situation
RIP Sandra Bland and sympathies to her grieving family and relatives.

The 48 hours that unnerved a city

To view the link you have to Register or Login

A great article.

Now all the rememberence services and so on around what happened on July 7th are absolutely crucial for us all to ponder upon but I have always thought that the attempted bombings of 2 weeks later, along with the tragedy that unfolded at Stockwell the following day, seem to get forgotton about.

Perhaps because it was all a bit nearer home for me (we actually heard about the attempt at Oval tube station within minutes of it happening due to somebody who was meant to be coming to my office ringing us in an absolute panic due to them being on the actual tube train) but I have always felt that those failed attacks caused more fear and anxiety in London than what happend on July 7th.

If they had succeeded then I think history would have been different. And the poisonous atmosphere the following day was palpable. Never experienced anything like it in London before.

Horrible times.

Any BBS builders/carpenters out there? Please help!

So following on from my boiler thread I am pleased to report new boiler going in tomorrow. That's the good news.

The bad news is the plumber told me I had to rip down a cupboard/wall tonight so that he could access the boiler (the boiler is in the bedroom and the previous owner had built a wooden partition cupboard around it).

Thinking it would be easy, I've just ripped the thing down in the last hour or so using hammer, drills, saws etc and in the process taken big chunks of plaster out of the actual walls it was joined to and made a right mess of my flat.

Once the boiler is in, do I need;

A) a plumber
B) a carpenter or
C) a plasterer

to sort this mess out?

Why don't they teach you this shit in school instead of Long division and Vinson burners.

Anyone else kind of miss the Simon Jordan days?

At the moment we seem to going though a fairly glorious spell. The club is progressing, we are on a sound footing financially and there hasn't been a cockup in ages. To sum it up, we seem to be under the control of a board, that, is competent. We are a well run club with a fast developing reputation.

Despite all this, part of me pines for the excitement of the SJ era. We always knew there was a car crash around the corner. If there wasn't anything exciting happening on the pitch we knew that SJ would say something controversial in the press. The whole sense of chaos seemed, so very "Palace".

Am I on my own?

Who is our most underrated player?

I'm not sure myself. The amount of posts from people in the transfer thread who seem happy to replace Murray surprises me greatly though.

Txfrs Tempered by Stadium Upgrades

As a response to some negative posters regarding the possible signing Bamford on loan; our expenditure will be influenced by the cost of the redevelopment of Selhurst Park.

Steve Parish's recent interviews have made it clear that he and the board are going nowhere and so without huge external investment, infrastructure upgrades will come directly out the club's pocket.

If we can save £10m here and there by making shrewd loan moves, this will make financing a new Main Stand (etc) doable without requiring too much in the way of loans.

It may seem short-termist if we dont get any more major signings this window but i believe it is all part of a longer term plan to grow the club using our own revenue streams.

My Boiler has packed up and I need a new one ASAP. No hot water is a depressing state of affairs.

Mark it down - 17 July 2015 - some 12 years after I should have started it, is the day I finally write the 'One More Point' book. Set a target of 10 pages this weekend and already the first four page have flowed like the old days.

Finally got the motivation and the reason I'm writing this post is that I want you people reading to shame me if it ever looks like I'm slacking in any way or not staying focussed enough.

Palace fans on here who remember the OMP days - if you have any comments/stories you remember then thrown them my way.

There will be stuff I've forgotten that you can remind me of that can go in the book.

After all this time I've realised that I don't want this to be a book just about fanzines and the hassles/stories/fun that come from writing and selling on the streets but I want it also to capture the essence of football from 1990 to 2003.

OMP started in 1993 but I'll also dip into what the fanzines before mine were doing. Eagle Eye was the daddy of Palace fanzines and will certainly get a lot of love but I'll also add in memories I have of other teams fanzines.

I want it to be a footnote so that people under 30 realise you could have a whole day out (beers, travel and match ticket) to West Brom or Norwich or Leicester etc. and still have change from £30.

There have been scores of books on football hooliganism but to my knowledge NONE on fanzines written by someone who was part of the scene.

Feel free to throw any thoughts down, good or bad, about OMP. Also thoughts on Eagle Eye, Eastern Eagles and even any of the smaller ones like Suffer Little Children.

Sportspages in Charing Cross was like heaven to me in the 90s. I bought such a wide variety of fanzines. All sorts of clubs. Did you have a fave fanzine of a club you didn't even support? I liked Ipswich's Those Were the Days and Sheff Utd's Flashing Blade for instance.

There were some stories that were never printed for all manner of reasons so some of those will finally get written.

Some items actually suit being written with the benefit of hindsight.

And if someone can think of a goddamn title I'll be grateful. Just like the old days - I could write 2000 words off the top of my head no problem but trying to think of a headline for articles was a nightmare.

Working title, for now, but I'm sure it'll change is 'Is that the Programme?'

Discussion: Transfer expenditure

How much do you think we might spend this summer window?

I reckon £35m - on the basis the board have confidence in the manager, and will negotiate and plan in a manner that still protects the future of the club, mwith the new coming im next year. Possibly bringing forward some of the revenue we could earn next year.

But on finance or on favourable overdraft terms

I'm intrigued, as i think we could spend £35m in the window - plus wages - and i think the board know what they are doing.

But secondly, what are the bun and the murdochs up to here?

Street Fighter II

I know there have been various games over the years, and SF V is due out this year, but none for me can beat Street Fighter II (and Championship / Turbo editions). All went a bit weird after that.

I was reading a piece last week which talked about defining games and how usually it is platformer / adventure type games, but SFII was one of THE biggest games ever, and it changed how people viewed beat-em-ups. The genre has kind of died off, but this is the onw game through most of my childhood that I grew up playing.

Even today despite the grainy graphics and elctro kind of music it still holds up pretty well and is very playable. A lot of games don't tend to age that well. I started really thinking about it when Ryu (my all time favourite SF character) was released for Super Smash Bros.

My early memories was playing SFII in the arcade on our camp site. The machine they put the cartridge in only had three buttons so we could only ever do punch moves and couldn't figure out how to do the kicks (we couldn't). :moo: A lot of people I knew completed the game with ease as Guile, Chun-Li and Blanka, but I as an 8 year old was the first to complete it as Ryu (with only punches remember!). :lux: So many good memories of this game, and wasting so many 20p's. Not to mention getting it as a package with my SNES and then getting Turbo too.

Must be some others of us on the BBS who are SFII veterans? It's a shame SFV is a PS4 exclusive, would have liked to give it a go. :p Sho-Ryu-Ken!

M25 in the mornings

A potential opportunity has arisen that would mean having to travel around the western side (M1 junction down to junction 11) of the M25 during rushhour on a fairly frequent basis (a couple of times a week)?

Does anyone have an idea about quite how bad that would be? I would probably hit the M25 at about 7am.

The Letter of Last Resort

You've just won the election, and have been sworn in as PM. Your cabinet secretary takes you to one side, and tells you that you have to write the letter of last resort, which is placed in the safe of all nuclear submarines, and only opened and acted on should the whole government be wiped out by an attack.

You have four options you can give:

1. Retaliate with nuclear weapons without prejudice.

2. Do not retaliate at all.

3. Allow the commander to act within his own discretion.

4.Place the boat under the control of an allied navy, specifically the Royal Australian Navy or US Navy.

Which would you chose and why? Which do you think previous PMs picked?

Article about it here, makes you think!

Everton kit cock up

Everton have been selling their new kit for about 4 weeks. As you know some people like to get their favourite player and his number on the back.

So some people have gotJohn Stones and his number 26.

However this week Everton have have said that the players number has changed! Everton are now refusing to refund the people who have shirts with the wrong number!

Now I know people say wait until the squad numbers are confirmed before choosing your favourite player and number, but in this case Everton were selling the shirts pre-printed!

question for the legal Bbs minds..

Guy I work with shares a flat with someone who has physically attacked him and has made it clear he is trying to force him out.. The guy who did the attacking was owed money by my workmate and grabbed him by the throat to demand it back ..he has payed him what he owes but still feels threatened by him .. The attacker has since started some work in the kitchen and has left it unusable but my friend is literally too scared to raise the issue .. The attacker has history of violence and has served time for it and also has the ear of the landlord as he is doing the work for nothing.. T Guy is also leaving his washing in the machine preventing my friend from using it.. turns the heating on and leaves it on all night .. any ideas chaps ?.. he is petrified of this man and is at his wits end ...

sites you check regularly and what they say about you

mardi 14 juillet 2015

What websites, forums etc apart from the BBS/HOL do you visit often? I feel like someone's frequently visited sites say a lot about them so I thought it'd e interesting to see if people's answers match up with their BBS persona. Note: I do not include apps here unless they're for twitter or something i.e. a website you can use on a PC. No snapchat, Instagram, Whatsapp etc

I have quite a lot but here's the main ones.
  • Reddit (especially the r/soccer (best and most diverse general football community on the web) and r/coffee subreddits)
  • Twitter
  • Youtube (more specifically, the channels I'm subscribed to. Mostly gaming/football but some stuff like ashens)
  • the Guardian site for when I'm feeling like a filthy liberal
  • footballforums.net
  • urban75 (lefty forum, mostly London posters, Mat Ov's idea of hell)
  • Khan Academy (trying to learn stuff in my free time now)
  • carles.buzz (blog about internet/mainstream trends, subcultures, chill music. No one on the net is as accurate and funny in their observations as carles)
  • Vice - for every 3 pretentious articles, there is one that's genuinely interesting
  • 4chan (I know, I know. It's still the only place that can have me almost crying with laughter regularly - I go on /int/, /sp/)

and a selection of other teams forums because I like reading about football from different perspectives - Grand old Team (Everton) is good, Foxestalk (Lester) is full of deluded morons to laugh at, House of Fun (Millwall) if I'm feeling particularly un-PC and/or want to laugh at people who believe the Daily Mail

Operation Jade Helm

What is happening to Texas? Just read in the Guardian about Operation Jade Helm, a US Army operation to test defence readiness. Some of the Texan conspiracy theories (Walmarts to be used as concentration camps, ice cream container trucks as mobile morgues etc) are off the scale. You have to worry about mental health issues there. Likewise Texans protested against the Alamo being given Unesco World Heritage status. Why? Because they see it as a first step to a UN takeover of the state. No Country For Sane Men.

Been noticing an odd trend on a lot of left wing websites I browse in which what had been, with notable exceptions, a pretty solid support for the UK remaining in the EU beginning to wane to quite a significant degree.

Iran deal

Appears to be done although the right wing in the US congress and Iranian legislature could still sabotage. Watch the rush to invest in a country which has the oil of Saudi, the Gas of Qatar and mineral wealth approaching that of Australia. A large, young, educated population who want to work. Over 35 years with minimal investment in infrastructure to catch up on.

Politically its important to see rapprochement between Saudi and Iran if ISIS is ever to be removed from Iraq and Syria. So its an important first step to solving that barbarity.

As I saw on Twitter the other day its been 2500 years since Greece and Persia dominated the news

Will we make a profit this season ?

After the £23 m reported profit last year , is there any way we will make a profit this season ? I read about how much we are paying players in salaries and the £10m transfer on Cabaye , ...... being a Palace supporter since 1970 , I do feel a bit wary .
Then I think SP hasn't realy put a foot wrong so far and he must feel there is no real risk involved . Maybe staying up for a third season is more of a priority than making a profit ( isn't there some new tv deal coming ? ) Often wonder how clubs survive nowadays even with tv income etc ? These are exciting times for Palace and I like any other supporter am hoping for 2-3 more decent signings , just hope we don't lose the core of the side who have such a great work ethic .
