Anyone else watch this Storyville BBC2 documentary last night?
A really enlightening and fascinating watch.
Originally shown in Israel two years ago, it centres around the interviewing of past leaders of Shin Bet, The Israeli Intelligence organisation tasked mainly with state security and counter terrorism activity in Gaza and the West bank.
I actually came away with hope (well some) that eventually the Palestinian crisis will be resolved.
The candour of those interviewed was incredible, and also how they their perspective of the Palestinian situation had changed since they retired. These were people who would have sanctioned some very controversial and immoral acts.
However one said that seeing parents split from children after storming a house in the middle of the night to arrest someone eventually catches up with you and turns you into a bit of a leftie. Another said that Israel has become a more cruel society over the years. They all said that talking was the solution to eventual peace and if with Hamas or whoever it needed to be done, and as one said, even if they are rude to you to start with.
Well worth a watch on Iplayer along with the Newsnight discussion that followed straight afterwards.
