Memories of mid to late fifties West Croydon

vendredi 31 octobre 2014

Hi,

For some reason another thread got me thinking about some of my earliest memories. Up until I was 5 we used to live in a 'maisonette' (as they were called then - a flat today I reckon) on Derby Road in West Croydon. The houses themselves have been knocked down and replaced by a more modern development. I guess they were Georgian or Regency houses with I think 4 levels which were then split into living space for 3 families. Originally designed with servant quarters I guess but that was long gone. :-)

My Great Gran lived below us and an older (than my parents) couple upstairs and just down the road my Nan and my uncle/aunts were in a 'sister' building. Lots of memories flooding back about the place and so on.

The reason for posting was that we used to walk up the hill to London road and then onto the shops and then often down into the market. Its all changed but unfortunately part of that is pedestrian areas and I can't get down them on Google street view. Bum.

Some questions. My grandad used to drink in the pub on the corner there which is now called Arkwright's Wheel. I don't remember that name (not surprisingly before my drinking days) and assume it's been changed - has it? We lived there from 1955-61 ish.

As you moved into the shopping area I seem to remember a cinema on the left and further up on that side was Woolworths? with Allders and Marks on the other side. Is that right or have the mists of time mixed it all up?

I also remember walking down Tamworth road and looking down onto a lot of railway lines. Some show on the aerial view but s**t load of houses in the way now and a lot less tracks than I remember? Seem to remember that road being bleak in bad weather.

Market was a regular spot for us with a real hustle bustle about it.

Soz for the nostalgia trip but appreciate any insight.
