McJedley is broken. The idea that Ledley or Mcarthur are going to score enough goals playing in the No10 position and that is where they often end up is a joke. Ive seen it all too many times this season that there are pockets of space on the edge of the opponents box, and yet Ledley doesnt have the pace to profit and Mcarthur doesnt have the technical skill required to make use of it even though they are often in the right position to do so if they had the assets. Look at their goalscoring records if we need proof to back up the assertion.
Teams simply wont steamroller us through the middle for as long as we have Jedinak in there, and theres simply no point having Ledley and Mcarthur in the midfield as essentially they fulfill the same role despite having different qualities. Its great having them in the squad as they are both top quality Premiership players, and light years ahead of the likes of Bannan and Guedioura, but one must drop to the bench.
Once Chamakh slots into the hole itll enable more attacks to go through a player who has the technical skill and vision to release the wingers, hold it up and win the aerial battles. Hopefully he can also be encouraged to get more shots off because he has the technical ability to score more, but even if he doesnt he will provide so much more to the team in an attacking sense than Ledley and Mcarthur. Thats pretty much common sense, and I think most people on here will agree with this so far.
But heres the controversial bit. I think Chamakh will improve us defensively if he breaks up McJedley. His pressing is superior to that of Mcarthur as hes a lot stronger. His pressing is superior to Ledleys as hes far more mobile. The stats back this assertion up far more interceptions and tackles than the afformentioned duo. This enables the rest of the team to close down and win the ball even if Marouane doesnt manage it, enabling turnover of possession high up the pitch. Thats why I think Chamakh, our most technically gifted player, must play every game including the tough away fixtures.
I think Campbell has given himself a real chance of nailing down the shirt for the season with his goals. Do I think he's a better finisher than Gayle? Not in a million years. I think Gayle would have scored at least 1 of the 3 chances that Campbell had in the first 15 mins vs Chelsea. But I think Dwight's all round game still needs work, and for now he should be a sub. Hopefully he will be higher up in the pecking order if Chamakh finally regains his place, so get more playing time, and 20 minute bursts against tiring defences may yield plenty of goals. But Campbell's all round game is better, and his workrate is superior too. Campbell can also drop into midfield because he's more comfortable with the ball at his feet and is stronger and more experienced. I think Campbell looks especially good when he drops into the right side of midfield releasing the right winger to get forward.
Theres no doubt in my mind that Puncheon has suffered a dip in form. For me he has been our worst performer in the last 2 games. He is a Premiership quality player, with decent technical ability, and you can argue that he has missed Chamakh to win balls higher up the pitch, but sadly he is getting found out in 2nd season syndrome unfortunately. Playing on the right wing with little pace and even less of a right foot means he is very predictable. Always looking to cut in, and cant carry the ball up the pitch, something that is actually now more important since weve lost the legs of Jerome too. His workrate is fabulous, but he deserves a rest.
Zaha can carry the ball, and Id like to see him start on the right. The reason for that is I believe his confidence is still low, and playing on the right allows him to move smoothly down the line without breaking stride to cut in, or having to use his unfavoured left as much. His contribution, despite being off-form and unproven in the Premiership has been pretty good for us this season. His use of the ball has improved since spending time at the w@nkers, and to have scored a crucial goal, an assist against the champions elect and win a penalty in the amount of time hes had on the pitch is deeply impressive. He needs a run of games, and deserves the opportunity now with the loss of form suffered by Puncheon.
Yannick Bolasie has come in for criticism from some on these boards, and there are those who say he should be dropped before Jason, but this simple fact remains: on his day hes a matchwinner. His all-round contribution to the team is superior to JP because he carries the ball further, he is stronger, wins more tackles and headers; put simply he is more of a presence. Yes, he can have off-days. But if he has a bad 55 mins we can whip him off cant we?
I think Warnock has done well in the short amount of time he has been here. I like the fact that we look more of a threat at set-pieces. Under Pulis we had an equally big team but never seemed to make full use of corners/free kicks. The team spirit has remained, and despite the criticism on here for Ward at left back, and no doubt the criticism of Delaney that will continue, I think hes found the best back 4 available to him for the purpose of defending. However, he does now need to make some quick changes, both in terms of starting line-up and also substitutions that have come far too late. (The game vs Chelsea is a good case in point: if he had brought on Mariappa for Delaney a little bit quicker then we would have been 11 vs 10. If he had also put Zaha on a little bit earlier we may have got a goal back sooner, and ultimately won at least a point from the game.)
Neil, you need to make some changes now, starting with Chamakh. After injuries and suspensions have cleared, I hope to see the following:
------------------------Speroni--------------------------------
Kelly----------Dann------------Delaney-----------Ward
---------------Mcarthur--------Jedinak--------------------
------------------------Chamakh--------------------------------
--------Zaha----------Campbell---------------Bolasie
