This is going to be one of those strange posts that I am unsure if it belongs in GCC or the sport section, or indeed whether this post is allowed as it kind of constitutes advertising. Although I would prefer to think of this as a raising awareness post or recruitment drive.
So, Korfball. What the hell is that? Well, this is exactly what I thought before getting involved. I was looking for a new sport to try and stumbled across this. The best way to describe it is to say that it is a mixture of netball, basketball with a touch of handball thrown in for good measure. Teams consist of four guys and four girls who rotate between attack and defence as the score goes up. Girls can only mark girls and boys can only mark boys. The target is a 'bucket' on a post which is 3m off the ground with no backboard, the play can take place in front of, around and behind the post.
I play for Croydon Korfball Club (CKC) who run five teams ranging in ability level from those involving national/international players all the way down to social level with casual players like me. Training sessions are once a week (twice if you join the squads who play at a high level) and take place at Royal Russell School in Croydon. A trip to Coombe Lodge Pub usually follows a session.
Our season is literally starting now and we are looking for new players as our 5th team is a brand new addition and currently we are lacking players, particularly female players. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome and the first two sessions are free. If you are even vaguely interested check out the CKC website (To view the link you have to Register or Login ), give me a shout or come along to try it out. Our next session at Royal Russell is Thursday 23rd October.
