Rules are as follows
1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.
2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)
3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).
4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.
5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.
6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.
7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.
8 Singles and upwards accepted.
9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.
10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2
11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.
12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.
13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..
14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You cant shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.
15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher
16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)
17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

In the Chilean league.
He has managed to make a multiple title winning side with some continental trophy aspirations into a bit of a laughing stock. Took him about half a season I think.

Traditional Family Recipes
dimanche 29 août 2021
Strange day the first family event since my Mum died earlier this year my sisters birthday. Son did a birthday tea and wanted to add a touch of tradition to the food. It could only be one thing. Known in our family as Fluffy Jelly its simple make a jelly but use half the water let it cool but not set add evaporated milk to make up jelly liquid to right amount. Then whisk with an electric hand wisk it increases in size by a fair bit.
It is a tradition in the family and follows my Dads recipe. Which I had to explain to son. For instance one ungnawed jelly...a knock at my Mums habit of always eating a square of the jelly before making up the rest. Add to a ten gallon bowl asked what one of those was. Had to confess brought a bit of dust to my eye.
Just got me wondering what other family recipes do others have.
Mine is cauliflower cheese might be because i use strong cheese dijon mustard salt pepper smother the top in cheese as well. However its the always requested Sunday Roast side dish.

Rumour: Amad Dial
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that young forward Amad Diallo has agreed a loan transfer for the new season.
The 19-year-old has enjoyed a solid rise at Old Trafford since moving to England in January. But following a busy summer up front for the Red Devils, his future in Manchester looks uncertain. Indeed, in a shock twist on Friday, Cristiano Ronaldo joined Jadon Sancho as a new blockbuster signing.
Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood and Daniel James are among other stars seeking game time.
As such, Amad has had strong links with a move away for the season. Crystal Palace and Sheffield United are among the clubs reportedly showing interest in a deal.
Solskjaer revealed in a press conference that a loan move for the teenager has moved a step closer.
Yes I do [expect him to go out on loan], the manager said. Its not 100 per cent signed but weve agreed, Ole said.
I dont have to say which team it is yet [smiles], but weve found a place that Amad feels excited about and we feel excited about.
Reports have claimed that Amad is holding out for a Premier League move to boost his chances of a United breakthrough.

Was sat in The Toucan in Soho yesterday, sipping a wonderful creamy pint of the black stuff. Anyone who drinks Guinness will know its so hit & miss from pub to pub, so when you find somewhere that does a good pint - its a keeper. Anyone got any spots where the Guinness is reliable that theyd like to share?
Ill start with previously mentioned Toucan in Soho & The Ramble Inn, Tooting.

Walking out of their end and loving it!!! A point is a great result.
Thought we rode our luck but who cares. They are a good side and it’s a great point.
Gallagher absolutely superb.
The forward line was very weak. Ayew battled hard and was an irritant to them. Benteke was poor. Wilf average at best.
Can’t stand this passing at the back. Andersen was good but got bullied for the second goal. Poor defending.
Kouyate can’t play centre midfield imo but McArthur was busy and good.
Really important point.

Do we need to talk about Guaita?
I was obviously in the minority because despite a few standout games (like Spurs at home), I didn't think Guaita was good in general last season but he then won POTY.
I haven't really been impressed by him at the start of this season either.
I think he could have done better on two of the Chelsea goals and I thought he was very poor today. Ward's goal line clearance rescued him once, there were other mistakes and then he made a poor decision on the first goal too.
Is it just me? Or should be looking for a new keeper in the not too distant future too?
Is Butland worth trying in the PL?
I know we probably have bigger priorities in terms of recruitment but if your keeper is dodgy it can cause anxiety through the whole team and can cost you a lot of points.

nine midfielders, who starts?
With the arrival of Hughes we now have nine midfielders:
Kouyate, Macca, Jairo, Luka, Hughes, Gallagher (all centre / CDM)
Olise, Eze, Schlupp (wide / attacking)
Based on how we line up, these players will be competing for three or four starting places. Appreciate that Eze is likely out until Christmas but this is a lot of options given that we currently only have two out and out strikers and one left back.

I have cut and pasted this from a Palace group in facebook
**Breaking News** Crystal Palace have agreed a deal to sign Will Hughes from Watford who will undergo a medical on Friday. The south London club are also in talks to sign FC Porto's Mexican right back Jesús Manuel Corona who will be having a medical early next week. Patrick Vieira has stated he is keen to also bring in a striker with the eagles focusing their attention on Eddie Nketiah and Odsonne Edouard.

The Fox, Keston
jeudi 26 août 2021
Hello!
Some of you back in 2012 might remember a post I made about The Swan in West Wickham.
My parents took that pub over for about 5-6 years and had a very successful period earning various pub and community awards in West Wickham.
Well, my parents decided to sell there lease to Bermondsey Pub Co. for various reasons.
4 years later and my parents have decided to venture back into the business they know so well and have taken over The Fox in Keston.
Now the pubs are slightly different but it will have the same feel as the Swan did.
Pub Grub, Lots of TV's, Lots of sport friendly atmosphere and of course lots of Palace! Prices are reasonable for the area! :D
So if you live local, fancy a pint, come to The Fox in Keston. All the bar-staff are friendly and the prices are reasonable.

Tickets for troops.
Hello everyone!
Haven't posted on here for a very long time, one of my lasts threads was about joining the navy or going to university.
Well, I've been in the navy for 8 years now and I'm currently deployed on HMS Queen Elizabeth on operations somewhere around the South China sea.
There is a website the military use called 'Tickets for Troops'. And from what I've seen Palace games are never on there.
The website gives military personnel the chance to get cheaper tickets or even free tickets for the team they support. As I'm always at sea or deployed I can hardly get to any games, which means when I am home getting tickets is always difficult.
Does Steve Parish still look at this site? Just wondering if they could set something up.

Our PL title winning team from our past.
Following on from the other thread, I was thinking about a team with 3 possible subs and a manager who could possibly win us the PL when they were all at their peak.
Names like Sansom, Wright and Taylor were straight in there for me but I'll have to think about it.
The manager one is tricky as Venables keeps coming to the forefront.

Wayne Hennessey
He is the BBC headline tonight against Newcastle. Made three fantastic saves and saved two penalties. Wonder how much he would cost after that? Burnley certainly know a bit about recruiting keepers. Good for the dickheads to have driven him out of the club
Benjamin Mendy
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised Cheshire Constabulary to charge a man in connection with allegations of sexual assault.
Benjamin Mendy, aged 27, has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The charges relate to three complainants over the age of 16 and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021.
Mendy, of Withinlee Road, Prestbury, has been remanded in police custody and is set to appear at Chester Magistrates’ Court on Friday 27 August.
Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service would like to remind everyone that criminal proceedings against Mendy are live and that he has a right to a fair trial.
It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice ongoing proceedings.

AFCON etc. Watch This Space
mercredi 25 août 2021
I see that big European leagues are refusing to let their players travel to South America for the S. American WC qualifiers, and an argument is brewing with the parties involved.
They seem to be hiding behind some Covid Red List country excuse. Not sure why Chile is still on the Red List TBH.
I say watch this space because AFCON is in January. Liverpool have Salah and Mane. I am thinking they are preparing the waters. Not like Liverpool to put club before country.
There is talk of switching the fixyures to mid October, but the likes of Inter don-t like that because it clashes with the league and Champion-s League fixtures. I
Based on that, the real reason on the embargo is pretty evident.
No problem for the Euros, or a Copa America in plague ridden Brasil, all in close season. And for a raft of pointles friendlies pre/tournaments. But now the serious club business is back on, it becomes an issue. Chelsea, for example, lost a player last weekend who got the virus while being free to play in The Plague Island League.

Weston McKennie is being heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa. According to reports in Italy, Villa are a fan of the Juventus midfielder with Premier League rivals Everton, Tottenham and Crystal Palace all said to be keen on a move for the former Schalke man. Italian media outlet Gazzetta has reported that new Juve manager Massimiliano Allegri is likely not to play McKennie in his team now that he has replaced Andrea Pirlo, who signed McKennie last year. The United States international initially signed on loan before making the move to Juventus permanent for around £15 million in March. |
Five Year Plan/One More Point - Collaboration Issue - OUT SEPT 11th v Spurs
Announcing the collaboration issue - the rebirth of One More Point (but without the Pritt Stick)
Old school fanzine writing mixed with a modern fanzine gloss and artwork.
In 2003 OMP helped 'Five Year Plan' get up and running and now it's come full circle - OMP is taking over the reins of the longest running* Palace fanzine FYP and bringing some of the 90s fanzine spirit and mixing it with the well written articulate stuff you know from the FYP guys.
You liked OMP? You'll like this as well :p
You hated OMP? Buy it anyway and just ignore the bits I wrote ;)
Used to read them but forgot about the existence of fanzines? Fair enough - give this one a try and see what you think
What's a fanzine, isn't everything online now? Not quite. Palace have had a fanzine (usually more than one) every year since 1987 - we're not letting the tradition die just yet
So, bring your cash on September 11th i.e. coins as we don't have card payment facilities just yet (but the way world's going it might be the case for future issues) and keep the tradition alive.
* Longest running English fanzine - Norway's Orneblikket still way out in front overall

Jordan Ayew
There seem to be a growing number of posters here on the BBS and on Twitter criticising Jordan Ayew. What short memories you all have! He had a fantastic 2019/20 and continues to perform well when given a central role. He is filling a wide position because we have no other options and against Brentford we improved significanly when he replaced Schlupp. Given that we have scored no goals in three games there is a strong case for giving him a starting central role. But not at all clear how we could make that work and accomodate WZ and CB. Thoughts?
It's funny how...
Last season Roy was criticised for not playing Reidewald and Mitchell enough, but now lots of people are saying they're not good enough. It's almost like Roy had some idea what he was doing. (For the record, I'm not anti either of those players, just making a point.)
How to play it out from the back (the Vieira way)
mardi 24 août 2021
We are struggling with this from what Ive seen so far. Riedewald has been jettisoned, rightly imho, because he cant defend. Full backs are diabolical on the ball when under no pressure, and panic when a semblance of a press materialises. Kouyate is not going to become a playmaker anchoring the midfield any time soon. New centre backs are excellent but is that enough?
Does anyone have any ideas? Everyone needs to stay calm, we are 3 games into the season, but I just cant see how we are going to pass it out with the current crop of players. Will that impact on our ability to win some games? Either we need multiple new signings or PV will have to think radically, well outside the box, with what he currently has. Just wonder where we go from here.

Rumour: Kerr Smith
Crystal Palace will join Southampton in making a bid for Dundee United youngster Kerr Smith before the close of the window.
The Saints have already opened talks with United but have been unable to come to an agreement yet.
It is understood that it would take a major six figure bid, with additional extras, to even get the Tannadice to the table.
Southampton are expected to try and up their offer now that Premier League rivals Palace are set to enter the fray.
Palace previously moved to sign Scott Banks on freedom of contract from United.

I was amazed that there was no mention on the big screen of all those palace supporters who had sadly died of Covid over the last 18 months or a minutes silence before kick off
At Chelsea last Saturday there was an excellent tribute with names on the big screen and a minutes silence There was a very moving tribute at Wolves yesterday.
I have messaged the club .I contacted the supporters trust a couple of months ago suggesting the club could have a memorial service when crowds were allowed back to normal that was mentioned at one of there meetings with the club.

Imagine if we had had a striker...
dimanche 22 août 2021
...worth the title.
9 seasons in the Premier, and we have survived fairly comfortably with one season of Benteke on form.
Take our team over those 9 seasons and add in a Vardy, Ings, Jiminez et al, and think of all those extra points and league places.
If we calculate the Premier League including all teams that have spent say 4 of those 9 seasons in the top flight, we most be the lowest scorers or at least a long way off what the average return must be.
We put all our eggs into the two Ex Liverpool players basket, and I suppose we were unlucky. Imagine if we had been a bit luckier in that respect, and had picked the right gem.
Then, take Zaha out of the picture...

R.I.P Don Everley
Just read One half of the Everley brothers died today age 84. A great duo who had a lot of influence in the early 60s. Not sure if Phil is still alive.

Mitchell isn’t doing it. Let’s give Schlupp a go there. If Luka is available then let’s give him a go in the DM role. Badly need Eze, Olise, Ferguson back from injury and hopefully some new signings.

Gallagher-have we finally replaced Cabaye?
CG looks like the absolute annoying, nip at your heels and make the tough tackle midfielder we have been crying out for since Yohan left. Like Cabaye he can also pick a pass and play some nice one touch stuff.
This is exactly what we have needed for a long time
Do we have an option to buy?

Seating / Standing Yesterday
My two sons and I got to our seats yesterday (block c row 5) to find about six or seven blokes standing there. Got them to move over to their own seats but two remained and stood behind us (same seat as us). I got a bit annoyed and told them to F off, so they moved two rows to the front where they found a bit of space. Of the remaining 4 or 5, a couple of them were still encroaching on to our seats and I just didnt want the hassle of confronting them too.
Anyone else unlucky enough to experience this?
I will just have to get there earlier in future, but these twats really p me off.

Discussion: Contracts Running Out 2022
samedi 21 août 2021
I didn't realise quite how many of our team was out of contract next summer.
Gallagher + Matteta Loans End
Schlupp, Ayew, Kouyate, Clyne, Tomkins, Mcarthur
Looks like next summer could be as hectic as the one we just had. Again, assume we keep a couple on (Mcarthur, Kouyate probably), will still have to replace 5/6 squad players.

Zaha situation now toxic
I think he needs to be dropped/subbed if attitude continues. It's probably best that he leaves the club if not.
Wilf arguing with Vieira about tactics whilst on the pitch-the normal arm and facial gestures. Thst can't be allowed to continue.
Shaun Derry had to come onto the pitch at half time and have a word.
2nd half, not much better, arguing with ref, instead of joining in with Palace attack. Normal arguing with players becoming distracted.
Final whistle-sulks off doesn't acknowledge any fans.
It's rubbing off on others. Jeff had a face like thunder when he came off and chucked some strapping on the pitch. He didn't acknowledge his replacement, the bench or anyone. He's probably thinking "why always me-is Wilf unsubable??"
It's nothing new, it's been going on for a couple of years now.
The individual performances are no longer there, I'm not sure if he's unable or unwilling to perform anywhere near the level he once was.
Wilf has been great for us over the years and I know this maybe unpopular but it's beyond embarrassing now and it's getting to the point when I just want him gone, rather than taint the memories.

Time to see what others can do.
Matthews, Ward, Andersen, McArthur, Wells-Morrison, Zaha, Benteke
May be a tad too early for Tayo so will probably be Mitchell or Hannam to see how he gets on.
Butland
Clyne - Tomkins - Kelly - Adaramola
Riedewald
Gallagher - Schlupp
Rak-Sakyi - Mateta - Ayew

Zahas pace
Where has it gone? I first noticed how (for his standards) slow he has got in the middle of last season. It's like someone flicked a switch in him and he no longer seems able or willing to sprint past his man.
Back playing a 433 his lack of pace is really highlighted. We can't hit teams on the counter and he can't suddenly break away from defenders either.
I think this may have been a big reason Roy played him as part of a front 2, in the free role his lack of pace didn't matter so much.

Help contacting a Palace fan
vendredi 20 août 2021
Ive been trying to email the guy who introduced me to Palace back in 1972, but he is not answering my emails and I cant reach him by phone. Last time we were in contact he said he was probably moving house. That may be the reason I cannot reach him.
If someone is in Block X or Y today, could you check to see if he is at the game and ask him to contact me? I do not have his exact seat number but think he sits in row 10 or 11 and sits in the end seat of Block Y, next to the steps between Block X and Y. His daughter sits next to him.
His name is Will and hes in his 70s. If he or his daughter is there, ask him to contact Phil in Jakarta.
I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

Discussion: Summer 2021: One more transfer, what would you choose?
Lots of holes, unlikely we can cover them all in this window. So, if there was one new quality addition that we could prioritise, what position would it be for?

Help from the generous BBS
Good morning all, this year I set myself a challenge to walk 4million steps to raise money for a local baby loss charity, with all money raised to go towards phase 2 of a serenity garden here in Nottingham.
Things have gone well, I'm currently on 2.8 million steps, and the garden opened earlier this year, providing a beautiful place for people to sit and reflect and have plaques added to the sculptures in rememberance.
Unfortunately, the park has unbelievably been vandalised over the last week, making my efforts to raise fund even more important. I've attached a link from the local press regarding the vandalism, I will keep my views on the alleged culprits private, but if anyone would like to donate a couple of quid to help boost the funding, it would be much appreciated

Premier league rivals
jeudi 19 août 2021
Seems like it could be nonsense, but this survey indicates that Brighton and Palace are the most unanimous rivals in the league.

Just wondered if by chance we have any Renault sales people on here?? I am going to have a arkana as my next car and wondered if theres a palace supporter I could buy from!!
1991/92 season - game by game
I know the plan was to start this thread on August 24th in line with when the 91-92 season started but I see the 90-91 thread has already started with the pre-season chatter from summer 91.
As it is the season had started for everyone else bar ourselves and Leeds. Our game was rescheduled for October 1st as Palace's introduction of executive boxes at the Whitehorse Lane end overran and weren't complete in time for the opening day on August 17th.
Our second fixture scheduled for midweek (Spurs away?) was also then postponed meaning that by the time Palace would actually kick a ball, they'd already be two games behind the rest of the league.
This will go down in history as Palace's biggest missed opportunity. The 1990-91 season saw our team peak but given two more of the team would go on to become full England internationals in 1991-92, in addition to Wright, Salako and Thomas, all of whom had done well on the England summer tour of Australasia, there was no real reason why the great run had to halt in May 1991.
Three top flight professionals were linked with Palace in summer 1991 - Gary Charles (Forest and England) Rod Wallace (who made the move from Southampton to Leeds for £1.6M) and Mark Wallace (who left Rangers for Liverpool for £1.25M)
Signing Charles + one other would have been a great summer. As it is we did things on the cheap signing Chris Coleman (£275,000) from Swansea who was unproven but would go onto become a very good signing all be it not straight away and journeyman Lee Sinnott who was never up to the required standard.

Well it was a crap game at Chelsea so not surprised no thread. Long term though I'm still optimistic.
The question marks i have from Vieira after game 1 were:
Why did we play one way ALL preseason and hear the players talk about how we want to play etc only to do something totally different in the game?
And having complimented Jimmy on his work rate and desire and highlight the others should take notes he going to change the cm?
Hey ho, we shall see and rhe next line up shall be telling...
----------------------guaita---------------------
Ward-----andersen----guehi-----mitchell
--gallagher-----kouyate----jimmy------
-------ayew------benteke----zaha-------
Subs: butland, Clyne, tomkins, hannam, jairo, schlupp, luka, raki-sakyi, metatarsal
Kouyate the real holding player.
Ward deeper, Mitchell more attacking and the super engines of gallagher and Jimmy marauding!!
Ayew gets another go as I think his critism though valid wasn't allowing for the fact he was only getting the ball if he won it back on tve edge of our own area and tried to dribble through Chelsea midfield.

Player Ratings And Reviews: Chelsea 3-0 Palace
I've got to say, I'm a bit shellshocked after that and will eat a bit of humble pie and say I was completely wrong about how the game would go today.
I can handle a shit performance and I can handle if Chelsea were extremely good because those things can happen but I'm still absolutely mystified at setting up in a 4-4-2 playing Schlupp and Zaha in positions they hadn't played all pre-season.
We need every little percentage against a team like Chelsea and playing 2 players in completely different positions they've played all season is just so strange.
I can understand the rationale, but the first game of the season you actually get to have a practice match against decent opposition before the game, i.e. Watford last week. If we were going to play 4-4-2 why didn't we do it against Watford? I have no problem with tactical flexibility but why not just go with 4-3-3 and if it isn't working then switch it?
Perhaps a marginal improvement on last season's 4-0 drubbing and at least Vieira didn't hesitate to make changes but I still think even with the players we had on the pitch we could have done better.

Joachim Andersen
Deserves his own thread.
Thought he was very comfortable on the ball and held a good line, constantly talking. Seemed happy to push us up the field 20 yards.

Stephen Rice U23 coach leaves
Real shame as he is very highly rated. Our upturn in form coincided with him coming in last season and he has gone back to Ireland to be a coach for the national team, specialising in scouting the opposition in preparation for games. Shame as when you read his CV he really has a roadmap of becoming a manager. He was very positive about Paddy who has now stepped up to replace Derry. Good luck to him, shame it will be working for the most awful Ireland setup ever.

Passenger Locator Forms (Transit)
I am going around in circles trying to understand if i need to complete a PLF for a transit stop in Italy on my way to Greece.
Does anyone have experience of this?
My route is Porto-Milan (Ryanair) for transit stop to pick up a connecting flight Milan-Rhodes (Final destination)...i will be staying air-side all the time.
So...do i need 1 (e.g Porto-Rhodes) or 2 seperate PLF's for Portugal/Italy and another for Italy/Greece ?? !!!!!
I cannot find any information about transit flights and what is needed.

These are some of my favourite things...
...two days to go before the season starts. Let's have a thread to tide us over.
What are some of your favourite things (all stuff valid - even philosophical twaddle) . For sake of avoiding the obvious, I think we can take loved ones, friends, alcohol, BBS and Palace as read.
Laurel and Hardy
Calvin and Hobbbes
The Far Side
Twiglets
Soul Music (and other black genres)
Fry ups, pies, curries, fish and chips.
A touch of dark chocolate.
Getting into a good book or video game.
A few selected TV shows.
A lot of 70's and 80's movies.
Travelling with the missus (family?)
Travelling to Blighty without the missus.
The first few days when the missus and I take a break from each other (I think that is healthy for the marriage).
My pets.

Brighton 8/1 to go down
Surely this is worth a few quid?? They have a decent defence and Bissouma is quality in midfield but apart from that they look poor, especially in attack. Their front 3 has to be the worst in the division. 8/1 odds seems very good value....

Ward Guehi ?????? Mitchell
McCarthur Jairo Schlupp
Ayew Benteke Zaha
I heard both Tomkins and Kouyate might be injured. I hope not but if so, Kelly?
Can't quite decide between Clyne and Ward either.

Have we ditched 'The Eagles' Nickname?
When I started supporting Palace (in the late 80's) the Eagles nickname was used everywhere... The crowd used to sing it at every game and it was a huge part of our identity.. I always though it was great - Somehow that seems to have gone now....?
I'm not suggesting we change our name to Crystal Palace Eagles - But is it time to bring the brand back again?

Back of the Nest Podcasts - 2021/22
Another season, another year of the Back of the Nest team putting out podcasts both previewing and reviewing our matches.
For those who haven't listened to our pods before, the Preview show tends to go up on Thursdays ahead of weekend matches with myself, Terence and Albert discussing the week's news and looking ahead to the upcoming match.
The Match Report typically comes out on Sunday/Monday and sees a revolving panel reviewing the match just gone.
For those who have listened to our pods before - I'll still be miserable and nasal :D
We have some plans for bonus content this season too and all that will be thrown up in this thread as and when. We're always happy to hear from listeners too, so feel free to chuck comments in here!
That to end, here is the first Preview show of the season for Saturday's game against Chelsea:

How are you all? How are you living generally?
I have the great fortune (atm) of not having any quality of life limiting conditions or illnesses.
I would say my diet is fairly good and balanced without going to any dietary extremes or sacrifices. I could add a bit more veggies, and perhaps the red meat (on the barbecue) could be scaled down a bit. Sometimes we dip in and out of the new superfoods.
I smoke, a bit too mush at a packet a day. And my alcohol intake is moderate at a couple of bottles of wine a week and perhaps four or five beers.
I walk the dogs up and down gemtle slopes each day and potter around the garden.
I am leaner than I have been for many a year. Although I am older, so a bit worn down, and can feel a bit tired sometimes.
I would give myself maybe an 8/10 at 56 years old.

Match Updates: Chelsea vs Villarreal
With our match in a few days, be interesting to see tonight how good Chelsea are after the summer break. Fairly strong line up which is good for us, although of course they have massive strength in depth.

AFCON - Plan Now!
We will lose Wilf, Jordan, Jeff and Chiekou for this tournament- so we really need to get in cover for all these positions and hope Ebs gets back to full fitness by the New Year. So personally we either need additional signings by the end of August or blood 2 or 3 of our youngsters at first team level before Xmas.
Some careful planning I hope is in place by Steve and Dougie to execute a good transfer plan.

Suggestion: Corentin Tolisso
French international who is out of favour at Bayern as they look to get Sabitzer from Leipzig.
Reports say he is available for about £10m. Surely for that sort of price we should at least be interested. High calibre player, who probably has his sights set a little higher, but would be a guaranteed started for us. If West Ham are in the mix surely we can throw our hat in the ring too?

WTF everyone thinks we're going to get relegated and Vieira is going to get sacked in four matches.
Apparently we're all on edge???
If anything pre-season has reassured most people. Using mostly last years match day squad he's got them playing better football. Without using most of the new players that we've brought in mostly due to injuries. Really only Guehi and Gallagher have been used from the new boys. We're still capable of congesting the pitch and putting in lots of blocks and hitting on the counter as we did against Reading with 10 men.
This time we've actually backed the manager but he hasn't used most of the new boys. He's brought in good technical coaches with good reputations within the game and hasn't tried to put too many square pegs in round holes. He tried it once against Charlton with Jairo and Kelly at FB and he hasn't done it since. FDB did it every match.
We've got a whole bunch of teams we often lose to in the first 10 matches, but then a nice big stretch of winnable games. This absolute twat is going on about starting fast against Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Leicester and City. If we get points from them it's a bonus. All we have to do at the end of the season is get about 38 points, 40 to be on the safe side. If we get 8 or 9 points from the first 10 matches then that's probably fine as the most I'd expect is about 11 or 12 anyway from that lot.

DVI (dual-link) resolution: 2560 x 1600 x 32bpp at 60Hz
HDMI resolution: 4096 x 2160
Now im after some clever bbs help
The monitor i have seen runs 4k @ 3840 x 2160.
But im confused as i can run hdmi @ 4096 x 2160 but would this be 4k as i can only run DisplayPort resolution: 2560 x 1600 which i assume is 4k

Strong line up for Palace with Benteke, Gallagher, Jes and banksy etc starting.
Who's your 3 teams to down this season?
I'm gonna go Watford, Norwich and Burnley.
Brighton also struggling unless they get a decent striker in.
Brentford the surprise package and staying up.

Fostering Children
Anyone done this?
My kids are in their mid 20s. One has gone. The other will soon.
Wife is saying she would like to foster some children as we've now got a nice seaside home, 3 bedrooms and (soon-ish) no children.
Are there any potential pitfalls? Anyone done it and saying: "never again" or has it changed your life for the better?
Boring question: How does it work? Do they try you out with one child for a fortnight?

Crystal Ball: End of Season 2021/22 Position Predictions
Another aspect of the Crystal Ball competition to get your teeth into.
Choose what position you think we will finish in the Premier League at the end of the season using the poll.
Please ensure that you record your prediction on the poll, as I will be using it as the basis for awarding points at the end of the season. Feel free to add comments but predictions must be on the poll.
5 Points to be won for a correct prediction and 2 points for 1 place out either way.
Predictions must be submitted prior to kick-off at Chelsea on Saturday.

Crystal Ball: 2021/22 First Six Kiwicumulator
Our ninth successive season in the the top division starts on Saturday.
As part of the Crystal Ball competition, we have two Kiwicumulators, one for the first six matches and another for the last six matches, which will be in April next year, with the season running through to late May.
Credit to hughff from New Zealand who created the Kiwicumulator many years ago.
Predictions must be in before KO on the first of these first six games, i.e. just before kick-off on at 3pm on Saturday 14th August.
Just Win/Draw/Loss for this: no need to predict the score, scorers or attendance. There will be individual threads for each match for that and hughff has already put up the thread for the Chelsea match.
Crystal Ball points are awarded for:
no predictions right - bonus point
3 predictions right - 1 point
4 right - 3 points
5 right - 5 points
6 right - 7 points
The matches that are the subject of this Kiwicumulator will be the first six league games thus:
Chelsea A
Brentford H
West Ham United A
Tottenham Hotspur H
Scousers A
Weed H

Here we go: Score, scorers and attendance (crowds are in, I believe).
Crystal Ball: 2021-22 Ongoing thread
Hi All and welcome to the new season of the Crystal Ball. The rules haven't changed from last season when they said this:
There is also pre-season and mid-season final position prediction threads and first and last six games KiwiCumulators that you can score points from. Furthermore, the Crystal Ball scoring team may, purely at their own discretion, award points on other occasions. For example, getting the attendance bang on to the last click of the turnstile, predicting something outrageously improbable, and honestly handing back points you didn't earn have all scored bonuses in the past.
All updates and totals will be posted on this thread. (You will have to deal with Ian Hart's feeble attempts at banter too - sorry in advance.)

To anyone new to this, it's all very simple. Basically each week someone will start a new thread (you don't need to wait for us to do so; feel free to start your own) in which you are asked to predict the score of the forthcoming Palace match. Simply enter your prediction on the thread - the score, the scorers, and the attendance. Scoring is as follows:
1. You get 3 points for correctly predicting the score of each match. 2. You get 1 point if you predict the correct result, but get the score wrong. 3. If you correctly predict the score, you will also get 1 point for each goalscorer you correctly predict. (To retain parity with anyone who correctly predicts a 0-0 draw, we will award a total of 4 points for that correct prediction). 4. You get 2 points if you are the closest to predicting the attendance figure. Additionally, everyone whose prediction is within 100 gets 1 point (therefore 3 points if you were closest and within 100). If you are within 101-200 you will get a bonus point. (A bonus point only counts at the end of the season in the event of a tie). Not going to be counted until all fans allowed back in (not partial crowds) 5. Cup matches this year (as last year) will be judged on the result of the match before any penalties. Therefore if you choose a draw and it goes on to penalties a draw is the result we will award points on. Please note the latest allowable time to post predictions is a minute prior to kick-off time. However, for an attendance punt or the scorers to be valid, the post must be made at least an hour before the kick off. |
All updates and totals will be posted on this thread. (You will have to deal with Ian Hart's feeble attempts at banter too - sorry in advance.)
Speculation: Trevoh Chalobah
Rather weird article on HITC claiming we are interested in Chalobah (who Chelsea want to loan out not sell)…..when we already have Gallagher on loan from Chelsea.
A bit like Team Talk claiming we had to send JPM back to get a second loan from. PL club.

FA Cup 21/22 (150th anniversary)
dimanche 8 août 2021
Anyone go to a game yesterday?
Hadn't realised it's the 150th anniversary of the first FA Cup competition this season until I went to Chatham v Eastbourne United in the extra preliminary round yesterday.
6-2 to the home team with a hat-trick for the centre forward.
Decent ground/set up there for that level of football (South East counties league, which is maybe 5th tier of non league football?).
Smart refurbished clubhouse since I last went there with plenty of TVs for people wanting to watch the egg chasing afterwards.
Chats home to Ashford in the next preliminary round.

15 bets pr match (2 weeks pr match).
Two matches against each-other. Home/away rule; Away teams bets have to finish before midnight (UK time) on Saturday evening.
Minimum odds limit 1.2.
We are mainly using BM rules, that means for example that;

Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.
Players must quote where they're getting their prices.
After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..
In-play betting is not allowed. With exception for events that goes over several days; For example after 2nd round of a golf tournament has been completed or before play starts on the final day of test cricket.

For a bet to be valid, it must be placed before the published start time.
Remember fair play. Duplicating youre opponents bets are not allowed.

BM CLC27 will go from August 2021 to December 2021.
15 bets pr match (2 weeks pr match).
Two matches against each-other. Home/away rule; Away teams bets have to finish before midnight (UK time) on Saturday evening.
Minimum odds limit 1.2.
We are mainly using BM rules, that means for example that;
Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.
Players must quote where they're getting their prices.
After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..
In-play betting is not allowed. With exception for events that goes over several days; For example after 2nd round of a golf tournament has been completed or before play starts on the final day of test cricket.
The contestants will be seeded for the group draw (based on overall performances in BM competitions).
For a bet to be valid, it must be placed before the published start time.
Remember fair play. Duplicating youre opponents bets are not allowed.
The bets must be possible to do in real life.
Insurance

Just a quick question for bbs insurance experts. In the case of someone like Grealish what sort of premiums would be required? Or any top player? Bit more than my home insurance I imagine. Just interested.

McCarthy
Interesting comments from him about his fitness?
To be fair, the last two years I have been fit for the majority of games near enough them all. Last season I had a wee issue. Nothing serious. I think I was out for two or three weeks with it."
McCarthy made just 17 appearances for Crystal Palace last season, and a statistic has been doing the rounds showing that Callum McGregor had played more minutes last term alone than McCarthy had managed in the last five seasons combined.
Far from coming to his boyhood club to be put out to pasture though after 12 years in English football.
I always thought he was decent and a possible starter for us if he was fit, especially as we had our main tough midfielder playing n defence? Has he really been fir for 'The majority of games"?

Young, very quick, wants to go in behind, can finish, Southampton seem happy to sell as he is running down his contract. £6m and worth a go?
finally got it right

One More Point - 2nd Book (Covering Palace, fanzines in 90s/00s, Goldberg/Jordan era)
First of all, thanks again for the support and patronage for 'Is That The Programme? - Honest Tales from a Palace fanzine editor' since it's release in summer 2020.
Was a big project with a lot of unknowns given the large gap since OMP had been an active fanzine in 2003.
The response was overwhelming and as a result the second book has been underway for the last year.
This will be covering 1996-2003 and include the 1997 promotion, Goldberg debacle, Terry Venables fleecing the club for a second time, the original admin period and the early years of Simon Jordan.
55000 words in and I'm coming up to the craziness of the Venables 6-month stint.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has memories of that crazy period. So many rumours; so many dodgy dealings (remember all those Argentines, most of whom then never showed up?) that I'm determined to get in print so that there's a truthful record of that period.
It's interesting reading the fanzines back from that period just how many times I wrote stuff but left the source anonymous around that time.
Feel free to share your memories of back then.
We made a legitimate effort to get Maradona in summer 1998 just months after making a play to get Gazza (he left Rangers for Middlesbrough in the end - would have loved him to come to Selhurst.)
It's crazy what the club went through specifically in 98-99 and I look forward to hearing any memories you have of then or any other time up to 2003.

Smashed iPhone 8+ repair
My youngest has managed to drop his iPhone 8+ and the screen is smashed
it had a cover on and it was actually his mate who dropped it
Can anybody recommend a reliable and trustworthy repair shop other than Apple who will no doubt charge through the nose?
TIA.

Will Vieira keep Luka as captain?
I feel if Gallagher was able to feature in our first match that Luka may not start. Doesn't mean Luka can't still be captain though.
Eddie Presland RIP
Found out this morning that Eddie passed away on Sunday aged 78, he had been suffering with cancer.
Eddie came to Palace from West Ham in January 1967 making his debut at Leeds at the end of the month. He played at left-back and missed only one game until his final first team appearance at Bury on 24th August 1968, a contentious game that included the sending off of Mark Lazarus and captain John Sewell receiving the only booking of his career that, I believe, was later rescinded. Eddie then lost his place to new signing John Loughlan in October 1968
Eddie made 65 first team appearances but continued to appear for the reserves until the end of the 1969-70 season. He was loaned to Colchester for five games in October 1969 and after Palace moved into non-league as a player and then manager.
Between 1964 and 1972 Eddie represented Essex Cricket Club in a total of 54 County and one-day games.
Our thoughts are with his wife and family.

Speculation: Brandon Pierrick on trial to Vejle
Vejle have handed trials to Crystal Palace winger Brandon Pierrick.
The 19 year-old is expected in Denmark this week for tests with Vejle with the aim to landing a contract.
Vejle's technical manager, Johan Sandahl, told Vejle County's Folkeblad, "He is a fast winger and will be training for the next period."

Bit on Secret Scout’s Twitter thread about this 19 year old Chelsea forward - 10 in 30 last season for Vitesse. He suggests us as an option and doesn’t respond when some folks say we can’t loan him due to Gallagher. Udinese also looking at a loan.

Thought I’d add this one as a suggestion given the talk Dougie was at the Bournemouth game this weekend. 24, predominantly plays right wing cutting in on his left but can play in any of the front positions and would also help fill the Eze void while he’s out.
Rumour of one year left on his contract (seems ambiguous) but if that’s the case presumably the fee would be reasonable as well. Just strikes me as a Dougie type value signing while everyone else focuses on Danjuma. Be a good addition in my book.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Chelsea (away)
Under 2 weeks so thought it was worth starting the thread now.
Gallagher can't play agaisnt his parent club so that rules him out of the central midfielder options.
Assuming everyone else is fit apart from the long term one's (Eze, Olise and Ferguson) and Clyne signs as expected, I would go with following starting Xl + 7 subs:
4-3-3
Guaita
Ward Guehi Andersen Mitchell
McArthur Reidewald Schlupp
Ayew Benteke Zaha (c)
Subs: Butland, Clyne, Tomkins, Kouyate, Milivojevic, Rak-Sakyi, Mateta
Not a bad team at all and hopefully we can sign a few more which will increase our options.

Just think having him on right and Wilf on left would strike fear in any team.
One quickest players in league.
Hes not gonna get more than 15-20 games / even starts with Sancho and Greenwood about.
New Assistant Osain Roberts could perhaps help him convince.
