FOR SALE BT SPORT

BT have confirmed they are in talks to sell a stake in their sports business BT Sport, following reports that Amazon, Disney and DAZN had opened discussions

BT, Britain's biggest broadband and mobile operator, moved into sports broadcasting in 2012 when it won the rights to show a package of live Premier League matches.

It later added the Champions League - after winning the rights from Sky Sports - and other sports such as rugby union to the service to take on Sky, the dominant player in British sports broadcasting.

BT's current Premier League package, which cost them £885million, allows them to show 32 matches for three seasons from 2019-20. Their Champions League package was a three-year, £1.2billion deal until 2024, giving them the UK rights to every game in the competition.

BBS Port Connoisseurs...

Give me your recommendations!

I’d like to purchase a quality bottle of Port to gift a friend, but i don't drink, so have no idea what's quality, what's cheap, what is reasonably priced and what isn't. :clown:

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I had a quick Google, and just assumed that because it's £80, and sold by posh ***** shop, that it must be decent.

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Is sadly my addiction.

Loved it since it started and I'm amazed at how it stands the test of time and how well acted it was.

I'm also the proud owners of series 1-10 (which is all that is currently available on DVD), you can catch the rest on you-tube.

There is also talk of the characters being made into a fresh series as grown adults.

Anyone else out there?

Suggestion: Tammy Abraham

Another local lad from South London. He is apparently available according to The Telegraph. If the new manager is Lampard, could we persuade him to come to Palace? Far better than any striker we've been linked with or signed since AJ, I think he'd be perfect for us as he can hold it up, has a bit of pace and knows where the back of the net is. Would be brilliant in the lone striker role to allow us to play an extra midfielder. Send Mateta back, send Batshuayi back and sign this guy. SOUTH LONDON AND PROUD. Would be interested to hear other people's thoughts.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Palace v Man City

Well it is just a suggestion but I'd change the whole back 4 subject to fitness. I'd have thought Tomkins fitness should have been mostly maintained as he had a facial injury. No idea with Sakho but if not, Cahill.

Guaita

Clyne Tomkins Sakho Mitchell

Schlupp Riedewald Kouyate Eze Zaha

Benteke

But with 30 mins for Mateta. McCarthy ahead of Luka if we need to bolster the midfield.

Can more choice and convenience makes things less exciting?

Was thinking about this the other day, when I drove past a book shop. When I was a kid I used to like game books, and got really excited after I saved up and ordered one in the local book shop waiting a week or so for it to arrive.

Now loads of things are next day delivery and there is an abundance of choice. But can't help feel it sometimes makes things a little more dull?

The same for TV. Yes it can be nice to binge watch a series, but I noticed the other day looking forward to Line of Duty, because it's exciting to wait and also because so many people are watching it at the same time, which used to happen a lot more when there were less channels.

Even something like dating. When I've been single in modern times you can end up going on several dates a week because of dating apps, and to be honest it sometimes got a bit dull (I ended up having a rule to not meet more than one new person a fortnight). Where as when you met people in bars, or through friends etc it could sometimes be a bit more exciting even if you had less choice. And as a total aside those on another thread who said that if you have not slept with many people it being an issue, once you have you know it really isn't a big deal, and I think those who find a fulfilling and loving relationship are far luckier (even if it can also be fun meeting different people).

Don't get me wrong there are lots of positive points as well to modern life, but sometimes I do think it takes the edge off certain things a bit.

Domestic TV Deal and Finances

Interesting article from the BBC stating that Premier League clubs are looking to extend the current Domestic Television deal to ensure that there is not another significant drop in Income as a result of the pandemic.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Some points of interest:

"The government is now considering whether to approve a rollover of the current £4.7bn deal."

"Clubs are concerned there could be another fall if the usual open-market auction begins as planned next month for the three-year cycle between 2022 and 2025."

"However, rival broadcasters may object to being denied the right to bid, and such a move would require government approval, given concerns over competition law."

request for help uploading a short video clip

Morning,
I have a 10-second video clip saved on my PC that I'd like to share on the site. mp4, about 1.5MB.
Had a quick look at FAQs but can't find instructions for doing so.
Any help gratefuly received! Thanks in advance.

Drums of war.

Not sure what's going on here, or how seriously to take it. We are getting a constant flow of negative news on our media re a pending war with China.

It's on the radio and TV constantly, in the news reports that "We must prepare" and I'm wondering how seriously to take all of this now, such as the pervasive nature of these persistent reports.

I'm swayed towards the feeling that the powers that be are using these reports to the Australian public as a public relations/propaganda exercise aimed more at sending a message to China rather than an actual fear of a real war.

It's aimed at the fear that the 100th year anniversary of the Chinese communist party could spark China into invading and re annexing Taiwan.

So I figured I'd ask the question. Can you hear those Drums in the UK??

Anyone eaten/drunk out yet (since 12 April 2021)?

mardi 27 avril 2021

Thought I'd start this thread to swap experiences of eating and/or drinking out following the first stage of hospital re-opening on 12 April. It's now been over 2 weeks, and the weather has been good - generally dry and sunny, if cold early in the day.

I find I'm consciously or sub-consciously searching for good places to either go on my own, or with friends. Ideally it would be somewhere with plenty of space which welcomes 'walk-in' customers. I'm fairly risk-averse with Covid, so even if/when pubs and restaurants are allowed to serve inside (due in May), I think I will still prefer to be outside for quite a while. Especially if it's a hot summer.

Brockley station is very good - locals have got together with the council to make a traffic-free street where the cafes can put plenty of tables and chairs outside. This was done well before lockdown, the idea was to make it a nice place to meet. It's been a big success. And of course, it's perfect for lockdown. It gets pretty noisy and busy in the evenings, and it can be very cold in the mornings because the buildings are west facing and the space is sheltered from the sun. The best time to go there, I think, is late morning/early afternoon.

There's a cafe up in Hilly Fields, which is lovely, but they've actually removed the outside tree logs that people used to sit down, because people were getting too close in Covid. So you can get a coffee or ice cream, but you have to try and find a park bench or sit on the grass if you want to sit rather than wander.

Down in Ladywell, there's a nice cafe called Le Delice with some tables and chairs outside. The road is pretty noisy though. Better I think is a place called Oscars a few doors along, which has a nice quiet garden at the back - they told me they hope to open it in May.

Where have you been, and how was it? Did you enjoy it? Did you feel safe?

Player Ratings And Reviews: Player Ratings And Review Leicester v Crystal Palace

Well i have never started one of these before , have we lost interest :)
Apologies in advance , no idea how to start poll .

I thought we played quite well last night . Strange in a way as despite being a fairly competent display i thought there were some average at best performances . We look so much better playing a 4 5 1 ( 4 1 4 1 ) , wish RH would adopt this formation more often . Having an extra man in central midfield made us stronger defensively and offensively . Leicester are a very good team but we generally were a match for them and it was nice not to be over run in midfield . Thought we played some decent football and on another day could have one .
Surprised we did not bring on Mateta or Batshuayi for last 20 as we did not look like scoring and Benteke was not offering much then . Concerned that Mateta is not getting any game time . Personally would like to see him given quite a few minutes before end of season . If we have doubts about him then it will influence how many strikers we need in Summer .

Guaita 6 Not much to do but looked confident
Ward 5 Seemed a bit off his game last night
Kouyate 5 Not overly stretched but appeared uneasy at times
Dann 5 As above and looks too slow for this level now
PVA 5 Again a few poor moments but not as much as some make out
Ayew 5 Worked hard but held on to ball too long
Jairo 7 Thought he was very good in a midfield 3 , showed excellent pace ( shame about end product ) , a lot more aggression as well
Luka 7 Again looked so much better in our more compacted midfield
Eze 8 Excellent , worked hard and was in game a lot more than he has been when playing on left in froint of PVA .
Zaha 7 Seemed a threat again and more comfortable out wide while still coming inside
Benteke 6 Much better recent weeks but he lacks pace and mobility

Subs N/A Barely noticed them

PVA in bitz

Anyone else watch this guy and notice even his own reactions to the things he does tell you they are the actions of a fool? Scowling and glaring as he walks away after nearly kicking the ball out of Guita's hands etc etc

He is one of the most unintelligent footballers I've seen in a Palace team. He has some qualities going forward and I am sure he is a nice person but I can't help but observe his foolishness in every game he plays for us, there's always a series of errors or stupid decisions.

I'm not saying he doesn't have the skill or technique to be a capable player at this level, he is of course very talented to be playing at the level he is, but my word does his brain seem to let him down.

I shall therefore now refer to him as 'PVD-' because D- is the mark I grade him for his performances. Is Mitchell ready to step up next season? We really need full backs that are comfortable on the ball, I admire Ward and am fond of him due to his history with us, he's had many a valuable game for us, but he never looks comfortable when he has the football near one of his feet.

The Great Kelly mystery?

Why is he not getting a start at all?
Martin is better than, or certainly as good as Kouyaté at CB who in some games would have been more useful in our midfield.
Also the odd time he's played alongside Cahil it looked a solid pairing so wtf is the problem? .. Kelly has never let us down!

Free will

For a long time I’ve thought it’s very unlikely we have any free will. This article sums it up:

Match Updates: Apr 27 - May 12

lundi 26 avril 2021

16 days straight where at least one Premier League club is in action.

Tonight...

Brentford v Rotherham United
Championship
19:00
Sky Sports Main Event / Sky Sports Football / Sky Sports Ultra HD

Real Madrid v Chelsea
UEFA Champions League Semi-Final 1st Leg
20:00
BT Sport 2

Far more interesting than the two of the scum 12 match; Rotherham travel to Brentford needing a win to close the gap on Rooney’s Derby in fourth to bottom to one point with a game in hand. Not likely you’d think given Brentford’s form, but Thomas Frank’s Bees are landlocked in the play offs - can’t get automatic and can’t drop out, so you’d think their players might just take their foot off the gas a bit tonight.

Crystal Ball: Last Six Kiwicumulator

As part of the Crystal Ball competition, we have two Kiwicumulators, one for the first six matches and another for the last six matches. It's time for the last six matches after tonight's match.

Credit to Hughff from New Zealand who created the*Kiwicumulator" many years ago.

Predictions must be in before KO on the first of these last six games, i.e. just before kick-off on at 12.30 on Saturday 1st May.

Just Win/Draw/Loss for this: no need to predict the score, scorers or attendance. There will be individual threads for each match for that.

Crystal Ball points are awarded for:
no predictions right - bonus point
3 predictions right - 1 point
4 right - 3 points
5 right - 5 points
6 right - 7 points

The matches that are the subject of this*Kiwicumulator*will be the last six league games thus, noting that we don't yet have a date for the Saints away match yet:

Man City (H)
Sheff Utd (A)
Villa (H)
Arsenal (H)
Scousers (A)
Southampton (A)

Get predicting.

Euro 2021

Been taking some time to check out some of the views of England’s chances this Summer from the perspective of overseas football fans. Had to have help from my wife with translations, but the consensus is that England certainly have the quality to win this tournament. The question yet to be answered is if that can play as a team at the highest level rather than as excellent individuals. The French certainly are not underestimating the English. Our Spanish friend are also seeing England as very serious contenders IF they operate collectively.

The difference this time is that routinely they do not feel that the English are overestimating Their quality or chances.

Jury still out though.

Maybe Kabbot has some insights?

Games that finished too early ....

Who remember the Palace v Fulham (I think) game that ended early about 40 years ago - seems like its just happened again in Spain

Are people less hopeful?

I wasn't around in the 60s and 70s but you just get the sense there was a lot of hope for humanity and a better future.

I just don't see that now, a lot of people seem gloomy, and that was the case before the pandemic. About the enviroment, the fact that globally things are becoming more authoritarian (the figures are worse than ever), that inequality is increasing. Despite all the technological advances, we can't even get to a place where there isn't homelessness, incredible really. From 2019:

Quote:

Two thirds (67 per cent) of young people believe their generation will be worse off than their parents
From this year:

Quote:

Close to half (48%) of Gen Z and 44% of millennial respondents in the primary survey said they’re stressed all or most of the time.
How have we got to this point and will it change?

Google Maps hacked by Brighton

I was fortunate to get my covid jab at Selhurst Park yesterday, and when planning my route on Google Maps, look what I found!

You can file it under 'banter', but still, how was that done, and more importantly, how do we get it fixed? I can't see a 'report this page' option on the app...

Discussion: Summer 2021 Transfers

samedi 24 avril 2021

The transfer thread this summer will probably the busiest in years, but how many players and exactly who do we need? Of course much of it will come down to how many contracts we renew but I expect we'll start seeing developments in the coming weeks.

Given Freedman takes a meticulous approach in players I expect we'll follow up our interest in Downes and Bella Kotchap.

I think we need four permanent signings and to make use of the two loans domestically we get.

I always think there's an unfancied player with ability who's worth taking a gamble and I think that player is Karlan Grant.

Which Palace player(past or present) best represents you/your attitudes?

Following the inspired thread 'Call yourself a Palace fan' (I think we've most of us tried it), it made me think which players do I most associate with, past n present. For me, as I grew up at the time, Geoff Thomas I always think and remember fondly- his brilliance from a fans point of view as a captain, his loyalty and demeanor he brought and still brings to the club- absolute legend. However, before and since then who do others think, through there experience, most represents their desired attitude from Palace player.

Looks like relegation

For one of those teams I always hated us playing but had a sadistic affection for. Grimsby are propping up the whole league table and look a lost cause. It will be the end of an era if the go. :(

School Trips

What were your summer camps and school trips_

We had a couple of summer camps when I was around 11 or 12. Gave my parents a break. Somewhere in Surrey - orientering, horror films on a big screen, verucas, all good wholesome fun. Had a day trip to a french sea port, and the usual museum visits.

A couple of weekends away with the cub scouts and scouts as well.

Seemingly, nothing on this level.

Call yourself a Palace fan??

Many moons ago (25+ years!) a wrote an article which I thought I'd revamp today! So the following is in true Facebook tradition, score yourself 1 point for each attainment (top score 26).

Have you:

1. Been to at least 5 away games?
2. Been a junior member of Palace-including club membership or the "Palace Guard"?
3. Been ejected from Selhurst Park?
4. Started a chant?
5. Recorded a game on the TV and watched it back later, not knowing the result?
6. Never left a game early?
7. Introduced a neutral adult or sibling to a Palace game and converted them?
8. Never missed a game home and away for an entire season?
9. Had your face painted for a game?
10. Celebrated on the pitch after a game?
11. Passed an away ground on a non-match day and have either gestured or sworn at it?
12. Shouted "Eagles" or similar at a stranger wearing Palace attire?
13. Acquired a Palace tattoo?
14. Been to a Palace v Brighton away game?
15. Taken someone on a date to a game?
16. Watched a Palace game from a foreign pub on holiday?
17. Pretended to be a Palace team or player in the playground?
18. Been on a football special?
19. Sneaked into Selhurst Park to have a look at the outch on a non-match day?
20. Travelled over 200 miles each way to watch a game?
21. Hung a scarf out of a window en route to a game?
22. Hugged a stranger whilst celebrating a Palace goal?
23. Banged on the back of a stand or similar noise making structure in order to enhance a Palace chant?
24. Hired a minibus or coach to go to a game?
25. Twirled a scarf?
26. Been out for the night in the town where Palace have played away?
27. Been to an away pub and endured stares from locals?
28. Celebrated a last-minute winning goal like nothing else at a game?
29. Been to a Palace open day?
30. Either "stood your ground", been assaulted or been chased in the pursuit of wearing your colours.

Greta Thunberg - who thinks she knows anything?

So we have a girl who came from nowhere to be the poster enfant terrible for climate change activism, with the BBC giving her ridiculous amounts of coverage. I think the poor girl has been given a sense of unwarranted self importance by her parents [Eurovision singer!!!]that is a form of abuse. She is an activist with no real expertise and detracts from those scientists that we should be listening to. Oddly she treats the public as if they are all feckwits who have no common sense about what needs to be done to become carbon neutral and cleaner. Bit like the conservative mayoral candidate saying scrap actions to reduce car emissions when it has been proven with the sad death of a young girl directly proven to have been caused by emissions. Attenborough is too much of a gentleman to say what he really thinks about her and extinction rebellion. What do you think?

Is there such a thing as a relatively small screen full spec tv out there?

In the past id have been doing my best to give advice on this thread but I’ve completely lost touch with the tv/sound bar market.

I rarely watch tv but H does; a lot(IMHO obviously). Neither of us are into big screen tv’s but my understanding is that the demand for smaller screen tv’s is such that they are basically being phased out and don’t offer the latest smart tv options.

Can anyone actually recommend anything suitable? Fully loaded but not massive.

And as a separate question the best sound bar.

Current tv is either 28 or 32” I think?

Thanks

Press Conference Live: Pre-Leicester Thursday 1pm

Summary from club Twitter feed...

Roy: We've got a lot of players back which is good news. Mamadou Sakho – even James Tomkins is out there training. So in fact, this is as big a group as we've had training for a long time.

Roy: We're still missing James McArthur who has not been training. Gary Cahill has not trained for the last two or three days. He's nursing a minor problem but we're hoping he can recover from that by the time Monday comes around.

Roy: Connor Wickham is out on the training field but not training with the squad as of yet, that also applies to Nathan Ferguson.

Roy on TM's contract extension: I'm very excited about Mitchell, he's got all the qualities. We were blessed with Wan-Bissaka and we're blessed with Tyrick. I believe he will be a player that will serve the club extremely well for many years to come.

What about you mine will !

Short and sweet really ,will your ass start to twitch a bit if WBA win tonight ?

How out of touch with football are you?

During the 2002 World Cup, I was 14 and on a family holiday in Italy. During England's first game against Sweden, I remember watching the game in the bar and I was sat next to an old fat Northern bloke, who said he supported Stoke. When the teams came up on the TV screen, I remember him asking me which club team Danny Mills played for, as he had never heard of him before. I remember thinking 'how can you call yourself a football fan, yet not even be aware of one of the best full backs in the League?'

Other than being old, fat, and Northern, I am now that man. I seem to know very little about football outside of Palace, and I don't really care about it either. Does anyone else feel the same?

By the way, I'm pretty sure the old bloke dozed off half way through the game :)

ID that autograph!

Howdy Memory Laners, got another autograph on another shirt of mine that I can't ID.

Its a 2014/15 away shirt from the squad that season, and must have been from 2015 as Pape Souare is on there and he only signed for us in Jan 15.

Any ideas...

Pushing the Envelope

...is what I am doing here....

I am asking questions that I should think most BBSers would most likely keep to themselves..

The sort of things that no amount of justification would placate the missus.

Have you ever signed up to or played an adult video game, the sort that require cash payments?

Have you or do you use the services of webcams?

Do you have, shall we say a secret, an online gambling account /addiction?

Have you strayed?

Have you used the services of a prostitute - either before or during your current relationship?

Have things gone a little further in a lap dancing club, on a stag night etc.. than you would be willing to give full disclosure to your partner ?

Are my questions far too tame for what you get up to ?

There are 6 dodgy things above. You can assign a number if you like, muc like our prediction games---- then we can try and work out where you are a dirty little cheater or not...

I am only 2/6 of that list.

Moving Desttop Icons

lundi 19 avril 2021

I keep some Microsoft Office files on my desktop for quick daily access.

They are kept on the right side of my screen, while Apps etc. are kept on the left.

Just recently after opening, say a Word file, working on it and then closing it, it vanishes from the desktop. By doing a right click on the desk top and picking Refresh the Word file reappears but over on the left. I have to drag it back to its location on the right.

And yes, I do have Auto Align Icons turned off, and Align to grid turned on.

No big deal, just annoying. Google has been no help, and Microsoft seem fixated on the Auto Align Icon setting, which is NOT the cause.

Any ideas?

Sorry about the thread title misspelling. (Desktop)

One Player

dimanche 18 avril 2021

Don't know if there is a similar thread somewhere but was wondering who I'd have if I could magically give Palace just one world class player. ( currently playing ) Am bored enough to be interested to know other peep's thoughts on this, since it is also an effective referendum on where our biggest problem lies. In the past, debating where we were weakest might have been a relatively easy thing but we now have gaps and lapsing contracts all over the shop.

So, the 'game' allows one player only and money is no object. You can have whoever you like and for any reason. You could have Messi, just for the extra income shirt sales he would bring, despite his age, if you fancy.

IMHO, we need a better midfield most, particularly with some goals from that area. I'm caught between Bruno Fernandes and De Bruyne. Tough one but since he is three years younger, I went for Fernandes. Can't think of a midfielder who manages that and is an exceptional tackler as well, but I don't follow world football like some here. Maybe there is someone even better?

Or maybe some feel we need a top defender, striker, ect. Anyway, fill your boots.

Thoughts?

Give the man the status at the club he deserves

samedi 17 avril 2021

If Roy as predicted does go, I’d like to think he would go with our upmost respect, From all the candidates mentioned only Dyche will keep us afloat. Roy is a genuine Crystal Palace supporter, who gave his very intellectual life to football, he should leave knowing his fellow supporters knew he did his best and as good as anyone whoever he’s matched against managerial wise at Palace in my opinion , facts and figures mean nothing in history it will be Crystal Palace that Coventry type team of the 70’s 80’s 90’s always finished mid table, culminating in an FA Cup win ,that’s as good as it needs to be with me.

PayPal payment credit in my account, not my money

I've had a deposit into my PayPal account, which is not mine.
There is some idiot in America who keeps giving out my email address thinking it's his. The amount of pretty confidential stuff I get is amazing. Ive stopped asking the sender's to correct and just go along with it. There have even been reservations for holiday let's which it's been tempting to cancel on his behalf as he just won't sort it out.
Well this time I now have 250 dollars (minus PayPal fees) in my account.
The right thing to do is contact the sender (not numpty) as whatever they are expecting to do won't happen. But I don't really want to get involved in as there'll no doubt be an argument around the amount returned.
What would you do ?

Public sector workers have pay cut of 20% since 2010

Since 2010 to 2019 pay increases for much of the public sector have lagged behind the cost of living increases (RPI), and for many of those years there were no increases at all.

This now means that for many public sector workers they have had real pay cuts of more than 20%. So a worker on £30,000 would now be on £36,000 if they had had pay increases just in line with inflation.

How can this happen given GDP has increased by 19% in the same period and wealth has gone through the roof?

Palace Fans (20-35) Needed for Master Thesis Study

Hi everyone, cheers for letting me join the forum! If this post shouldn’t be here or should go somewhere else, admins feel free to delete or move.

I am a master's student based in Lund University in Sweden, and myself and a fellow student are currently in the process of writing our thesis on a couple of football clubs, and how the supporters view their team's commercial activities/extensions off the pitch.

With this in mind, we are looking at Crystal Palace as one of the clubs, and I was hoping that a couple of people here might be interested in taking part? It would consist of you conducting a Zoom interview with us just to get your opinion on what Palace is doing off the field, and would be anonymous.

We would be looking for people in the age range of 20-35, and also be based in England (and would have also attended games before Covid kicked in). Of course among the participants who take part, we’ll be raffling off a 20 quid Amazon voucher as well.

If anyone has any questions feel free to drop me a message or just reply to this thread, and also if you’re interested just let me know as well; cheers everyone for reading!

So will Putin invade or not?

Simple things you're shit at

I thought I'd start a fun Thursday thread to hear examples of things that should be really simple and other people seem to find really simple, yet for some reason, you really struggle with.

For me, the big one is folding clothes. When I see people in shops walking around and folding t-shirts perfectly with a deft flick of the wrists, I'm completely in awe. When I'm ironing, each t-shirt will take me a good minute to try and fold, with the aid of the ironing board as a base and yet the result is still crap. I've even watched youtube videos to learn the secret methods, but I just can't manage it.

The other thing is breaking eggs. I either tap it too gently that I barely crack the surface, or too hard that the thing shatters, the yolk breaks apart and there's bits of egg shell everywhere. I've been trying a double tap method recently which seems to be working a bit better, but even so, I'm sure other people don't struggle like I do.

What are yours?

Suggestion: Jacob Murphy

Has only a year left on his contract at Newcastle so perhaps one to monitor? Decent right winger who is right footed, and can also play right back and right wing back. Pace, skill, technical ability.

Hypothetical pension question.

mardi 13 avril 2021

Invest 10,000 in nest pension. Get 2500 tax added. 12500
Draw 25%tax free each year = 8500drawn out 4000left.
Draw out the 4000and pay tax on it. So you get 3000.

Net result you put on 10k and got out 11.5k. that's without taking into account any investment profit.

Need to be over 55.
What am I missing here?

Palace’s average league position since 1959

After a discussion on another thread about Palace’s place in the football pyramid, and in particular a comment from El Aguila, I thought I’d work out what our average league position works out at. I chose to start from 1958/59 to the present day as that year was when the North and South leagues were abolished and we just had four national leagues of 92 teams as we do today.

I will reveal the answer later in the thread, but before I do, I will place up a poll to see off the top of your heads, where you think our average position in the 92 football pyramid since 1958 works out as.

The range will start from 15 and end at 54. Guessing no one with any knowledge of football never mind Palace would think we’d rank higher than 15th or lower than the third tier.

CPFC BBS App APK

Anyone know if it's elsewhere as an apk to download?

This Leicester Party

Anyone followed this?

I've got a bit of time for Brendan Rodgers. He looks pretty miffed that three of his best players let him down so badly.

And Madisson telling everyone to turn the lights off and hide is now a massive joke. 2 months ago I'd have had him starting for England. But he's a div.

Suggestion: Joachim Anderson

Final suggestion from me, before the mods get annoyed  If we are going to sign a younger centre back, and Joachim Andersen wants to stay in the Premier League, then I think this is the one to go for. He's a monster in the air. Passing range is ridiculous. Think he's 25, so one for the future.

Would cost a lot of money from Lyon, but could we structure it as a loan with an agreed price the following summer? I think if we signed him we could afford to let all 3 of Sakho, Dann and Cahill go. What are people's thoughts?

Discussion: Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Summer 2021)

This will divide opinion, so would be interested to know people's thoughts. There is no way that he has a future at Chelsea anymore, surely? He has been poor for Fulham this season. So he is likely to be available. However, the issue with him previously was injuries. He has managed to play regularly for Fulham, without any injury problems at all, so that problem has disappeared, for now at least.

We know he has the quality. He forced his way into the England squad after doing well for us. He's a South London lad. 6'3", excellent technical ability and physical attributes. He's a ball carrier, and we still need one of those. Just wondered what people would think if we were interested in signing him in the summer?

Longest taxi journey

What are the longest taxi journeys people have ever taken, why did you need to do it and how much did it cost??

Suggestion: Mario Lemina

It is a great read and a lot of great work was put into it by Ben.

Dougie Freedman

dimanche 11 avril 2021

Club legend, surely not disputed? Although seems to divide the fan base somewhat. I'm really interested in gauging fans rounded views on him.

For me, his playing career isn't up for debate; one of my all time favourite players. As a manager? I think that the sour taste left in our mouths has clouded judgement. I think he showed real promise as a manager. Failed once he took the dollar at Bolton and has not done well since. I personally feel he will one day manage us again, and I think he will prove people wrong.

Should've said, I also think he has done a very good job as DOF.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Leicester (away)

----------------------------Guaita--------------------------------
Ward----------Kouyate--------------Cahill-------------Mitchell
Eze-----------Milivojevic-----------McCarthy----------Schlupp
----------------Zaha-----------------Benteke-------------------

I'd give Eze a chance there, as we are so weak right midfield. Ayew works hard but there's never a meaningful attack down that side when he plays there as he always cuts in. Same with Townsend and Schlupp if he plays that side. I'd be asking Eze to whip balls into the box for Benteke - EE has a decent cross. Zaha can drift out to the right to help out.

Would give the kid Rak-Sakyi a go from the bench - he can play right wing can't he? He can't be worse than those who have played there this season, so let's give him a try at least. Maybe he could solve our main problem position.

The Centre Back Conundrum

Arguably the biggest problem we have going forward is at centre back. We are filled to the brim with aging, injury prone centre backs on large wages. A conversation on the PVA thread made me think about how the club would approach this given the impending dilemma.

Cahill- Contract expiring at the end of the season, and is 35. Been playing well recently after some injury problems. Not getting any younger though, but an argument could be made for an extension.
Dann- Contract expiring at the end of the season, and is 34. Done reasonably this season, not really let us down. But similar to Cahill he's getting on in years now. An argument can be made to renew for a year though.
Sakho- I'd say this is probably the easiest to work out. Contract expiring, barely played, large salary. Very unlikely to be offered a new deal, you'd hope.
Tomkins- Barely played in a long time, wrong side of 30 now too with his deal running out in 2022. Not sure he can even be factored into future planning at this point, even though he is still quality.
Kelly- I like Kelly, but he has barely played this year. Not sure if that's due to injury or not.
Kouyate- Largely been a saving grace for us and eased a lot of the injury problems we've had. Will he be a centre back permanently for us from here on in? I'd hate to be thinking about how we address this position without him.

How do we think the club will address this in the summer? Will Cahill and Dann be let go or renewed? Either way, it's pretty clear we need a big signing here, possibly two in the summer.

I'd be interested to get people's opinions.

Win the champions league w/ the team you support or win the world cup w/ your country

I would want to win the Champions League with the club that I support

The "Am I the only one" thread.

Post things that you do that are maybe a bit strange, and you think its just you that does it.

Am I the only one, that when starting a new toilet roll, always throws away the outer layer?

Suggestion: Matheus Pereira

mardi 6 avril 2021

Again, other clubs will be interested. Apparently available though. Worth a try to be Andros Townsend’s replacement? ;)

Suggestion: Eddie Nketiah

A year left on his contract. Fee probably around £25m or lower. Works very hard, pace and can finish. South London lad. Forget spending on the likes of Brewster or some foreigner not used to the league. This is surely the player to go for if we can? West Ham interested as well unfortunately. But they wanted Eze as well, and look what happened there. :p

Thoughts? Let’s buy quality not quantity if we can.

Man City post £126m loss

Will it be the biggest loss posted by a PL club?

Certainly starts to build the picture of how Covid has impacted football finances. The figure doesn’t include some CL income as that was after the restart as was the sale of Sane. Those 2 things might reduce it by 30-50%

Agents' Fees

We might not be great spenders in the transfer market but we are certainly keeping those football agents in the comfort they no doubt deserve.

According to latest figures we paid £6,760,093 to agents and intermediaries in the year 1 February 2020 to 31 January 2021.

I suppose we shouldn't complain as they cost us £8,154,437 the previous year.

I can only imagine these payments are made over the term of a player's contract as we have spent hardly anything since 2018, with the exception of Eze.

Stayed at the Palace......

Should they have stayed at the Palace?

Let's reminisce about who left at the right time for their career, who stayed too long, who we thought were going to go on to great things but didn't, who made a right arse of themselves and fell flat on their face after leaving us and so on...

To get the ball rolling

Ian Wright - went on to great things
Southgate - did well
AWB - great move for him

Wilf - too early?
Bostock - too early
On dis ting - too early

Hudson - plonker

Vince - stayed too long
Geoff - stayed too long

Ninja - mission complete, returned to the shadows

Paul Ritter RIP

I knew him most from Friday night Dinner. 54 brain tumor :( RIP

Zaha vs Eze - CURRENT Valuations

Not what would we agree to sell at, but what would another team be prepared to pay in the Summer window 2021 ?

I'd go £30 million Zaha and £45 million Eze. And if I was the buyer it would be Eze all day long.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Chelsea 18/4 (H)

lundi 5 avril 2021

I’d go with how we looked after the second substitution. While Eze and Schlupp are ultimately attacking players, I think that they’d still have the defensive nous to play in a midfield 3 with Luka. They’d be excellent to have on the counter attack and drive us up the field. I think Zaha HAS to play left wing and he could exploit the space behind James/CHO.

It’ll never happen, but we could dream. The fact that this has already happened in a Roy Hodgson game means it’s not beyond the realms of possibilities.

Guaita
Ward - Kouyate - Cahill - PVA
Milivojevic
Eze - Schlupp
Ayew - Mateta - Zaha

Butland, Kelly, Dann, Mitchell, Hannam, Riedewald, Townsend, Benteke, Wickham

If McCarthy or McArthur are back then we need to get them on the bench.

Easter 1969

It being Easter takes my mind back some fifty two years, to one of the best seasons in our history. We were in a good position in the league and had two tough matches for our Easter programme, but they were at home and I couldn’t wait. Good Friday started sunny but with that chill you get with a spring morning. I was up and out to Wallington station early, couldn’t afford to miss the train especially with it being a Sunday service and an 11.00 kick off. As I got off at Selhurst there seemed to be more people than usual and I worried that I might be late. Fortunately it was because the crowd was well over 40k that day, against a very good Middlesbrough side who were up there with us. The game itself was a bit of a stalemate with both sides happy with a draw rather than risk defeat. The good thing I thought on the train home was that I only had about twenty six hours to wait before I would be back watching us take on Pompey.
When I got into the ground on Saturday I remember seeing the ITV camera trucks, so knew we would be on the telly later! The game relatively easy for us,Cliff Jackson scored if I remember correctly but the highlight of the game was Steve Kember’s turn and volley from about fifteen yards into the back of the net at the Holmesdale end. The crowd of about 30k went home happywith a 3-1 win, and as I spend the journey home working out how many points we need etc. What I didn’t realise that i would never see my beloved team play on consecutive days ever again.

Does anyone have any experience or expertise?

Friend of mine is branching out into landscaping from general building and is going self employed, and was asking what is most reliable and what to look for in the things.

Any advice or experience to pass on? Thanks

Democracy under Siege

Following on from the police UK thread.

Quote:

The countries experiencing deterioration outnumbered those with improvements by the largest margin recorded since the negative trend began in 2006. The long democratic recession is deepening...With India’s decline to Partly Free, less than 20 percent of the world’s population now lives in a Free country, the smallest proportion since 1995.

Jones Knows

Has anyone noticed Sky sports website’s premier league predictions guy, Jones knows, always predicts Palace to lose and week in week out gives a little comment as to how bad we are. I recall one week he expressed amazement that we had the points total we have. His latest prediction for out game against Everton takes the biscuit altogether though. Jones seems to ‘know’ we will lose 8 of our last 9 games and that every club will have marked us down for an easy three points. Has he something against us or what? I think we’d be on single figures points if his predictions for us were accurate.

Crystal Ball: Everton Away

It seems to be ages since our team played in the Premier League, but we travel to Goodison Park for a 6pm kick off on Monday night.

Still no fans allowed, so predictions of the score and scorers. COYP

Wedding Suit Shopping

Number 1 question, what is the situation with Moss Bros? There was some talk a while back that they were in trouble so would it be unwise to get anything from there?

Just when I thought this would be pretty boring and tedious, I didn't factor in the added complications that have no doubt stemmed from a year of Covid!

Getting married in late September (I hope) and trying to find suits for the wedding party but it appears every retailer is having a massive sale on anything worth having at a semi reasonable price and of course have cleared massive amounts of their stock. So I am now playing the game of sizing bingo...

Any recommendations on places to buy wedding suits, grey (medium/charcoal kind of colour), three piece and regular fit with ideally a budget of less than £150 each (for the 3 piece itself)?

Summer Transfer Window 2021

I decided to start a thread mainly to talk about this:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

MANCHESTER CITY will have to fork out a mind-blowing £600,000-a-week to land Erling Haaland in a package costing over £300MILLION.

The Norwegian hotshot, 20, whose transfer fee this summer will be more than £150m, wants to be the highest-paid player in Premier League history.
You'll never be able to guess who Haaland's agent is.
