Am I wrong to feel uneasy about the amount of work required to get us in a position to deliver a Fast Start to the Season ?
1. We have lost out on Mamo Sakho who was a Giant in helping resolve our defensive frailty last Season and a big factor in our Premiership survival (by the skin of our teeth),
2. We have no Premiership standard goal scoring central striker cover for Benteke should he need replacing off the bench or in the event of injury,
3. Big Sam rightly stated that any CPFC transfer signing had to bring in a better quality player than we had in the starting eleven already. The Club are talking cost restraint on transfers and the transfer targets rumoured so far do not appear to me to be clear upgrades on what we already have.
4. Under FDB we are to evolve our style of play (again) despite not being in a financial position to afford to buy the quality of players to deliver Barcelona style football. FDB is talking about a high pressing game (as played by Klopp at Liverpool) . A high pressing game will leave our defence more exposed. Big Sam's approach of playing deeper and focusing on keeping clean sheets then breaking fast with Zaha , Townsend and Benteke seemed better suited to a cheaply assembled squad , is exciting to watch and worked well for us in the second half of last Season. Leicester won the Premiership playing that way and even Chelsea built their early lead in the Prem by being mean defensively and breaking fast.
5. Cabaye and Punch are a year older and showing it , leaving us in need of a new goal scoring/creative midfielder,
6. We have not heard that Mandanda has had a change of heart about returning to play in France and Hennessey is only a decent back up keeper at this level,
7. We need to hit the ground running and get wins from our opening 5 games of this coming Season to provide confidence in the Management of FDB before we then hit a run of 6 really tough fixtures.
Can Frank de Boer deliver a winning CPFC side ?
