Nice Equipment at the Training Ground

vendredi 30 juin 2017

Looking at the first day of training video on the Eagle Members site, it is amazing how well equipped the training ground is now for medical testing and injury treatments.

A far cry from the magic sponge days.

The players looked in good spirits.

So any guesses on who he'll sign and if the deal(s) will be completed prior to the first game?

Bluetooth Connection

Problems connecting a Logitech MX Master Mouse to a Dell XPS 13 9350 using the Smart Bluetooth option.

The laptop finds the mouse straight away but won't complete the connection.

I have previously had this mouse connected but for some reason now this won't happen.

I have another Logitech Mouse (an Ultrathin) that connects on the Smart Bluetooth just fine.

Is the MX Master faulty? Having run through the fault with Logitech they eventually gave in and replaced the mouse but the brand new one also refuses to work.

I have updated the latest Bluetooth Drivers from the Dell website. I have used device manager to uninstall and reinstall the Bluetooth hardware more times than I care to think about. I have gone into 'services' and changed the startup options for the Bluetooth components in there.

I really don't know what to do next! Do I just accept that the mouse now won't work with my laptop? Is the Bluetooth component in the laptop faulty?

The issues point to various faults - the mouse itself? but that has been replaced with a brand new item that displays the same behaviour - the laptop? but I have another mouse that connects perfectly.

I will be asking Dell (:wallbash: expected) but any help from here appreciated.

Cheers

What will happen if clubs find issues with safety ?

Suggestion: Olivier Giroud

With West Ham weighing up a £20Mil bid for the coiffured one, Arsenal looking to 'upgrade' with Mbappe and/or Lacazette, and the player himself wanting to stay in London, maybe worth a look..?

We do like to buy players who have scored decent goals against us...

Maybe Mandanda can put a good word in for us ;)

Unimportant Cup Competitions

With the Asia Trophy coming up, I was wondering how many strange cup competitions/friendlies we have entered over the years.

One that stands out was the Philips Cup in 2003 against PSV.

Anyone have any recollections of any other unimportant cup competitions through the years?

Match Ticket Information Buying on line

Myself and my son both hold season tickets, we are now in a position to, hopefully, go to some away games. On our accounts we are noted as friends/family, does this mean we can automatically buy 2 at the same time?
Hope this makes sense.
Cheers

Northern Ireland - Power sharing

A number on here have a good understanding of Northern Ireland politics.

Talks going on now are stalling, and not expected to reach an agreement come Mondays deadline on power sharing.

Educate me please, what are the stumbling blocks, what are the implications if no agreement is reached, what impact has the DUP deal had on these talks?

Financial Fair Play

jeudi 29 juin 2017

How does this work exactly? It all seems a little bit odd.

I have just been reading a few articles on Football Italia and Inter Milan have just made €30m in sales to reach their target before FFP kicks in, but yet they are also offering €60m for Nainggolan and trying to sign a Centre Back from Atletico Madrid.

Absolutely none of it makes any sense to me?!

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Goal Keeper Wanted for 6 A Side Team in Sussex

My 6 A Side Team are looking for a Keeper to start our new Season next Tuesday. We play for 30 minutes in Burgess Hill between 18:30 and 22:00 and have taken part in the Selhurst 6 A Side Tournament for the past 2 Years.

The team is made up of mostly Palace fans so a good chance to get to know other Palace Fans 'Behind Enemy Lines' (I'm sure you're as sick of those poxy 'Sussex by the Sea' chants as we are).

If you're interested either reply to this post or PM me for further details.

Pensions - Fund managers and consultants ripping us all off

Fund managers and investment consultants are sucking our pension funds dry

The findings of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) asset management market study were published yesterday. Here are the key points in full.
I will read in detail to find some of the more interesting comments.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

The report is ground breaking it reveals the excessive profits that have been extracted from pension funds and consumers.

The FCA's proposed remedies
The remedies the FCA is taking forward fall in to three areas.
• To help provide protection for investors who are not well placed to find better value for money, the FCA proposes to:
• strengthen the duty on fund managers to act in the best interests of investors and use the Senior Managers Regime to bring individual focus and accountability to this;
• require fund managers to appoint a minimum of two independent directors to their boards;
• introduce technical changes to improve fairness around the management of share classes and the way in which fund managers profit from investors buying and selling their funds.

To drive competitive pressure on asset managers, the FCA will:
• support the disclosure of a single, all-in-fee to investors;
• support the consistent and standardised disclosure of costs and charges to institutional investors;
• recommend that the DWP remove barriers to pension scheme consolidation and pooling;
• chair a working group to focus on how to make fund objectives more useful and consult on how benchmarks are used and performance reported.
• To help improve the effectiveness of intermediaries, the FCA will:
• launch a market study into investment platforms;
• seek views on rejecting the undertakings in lieu of a market investigation reference regarding the institutional advice market to the Competition and Markets Authority;
• recommend that HM Treasury considers bringing investment consultants into the FCA's regulatory perimeter.

The final report confirmed the findings set out in the interim report published last year - noting:
• That despite a large number of firms operating in the market, there was evidence of "sustained, high profits over a number of years".
• Investors are not always clear what the objectives of funds are, and fund performance is not always reported against an appropriate benchmark.
• The FCA found concerns about the way the investment consultant market operates. (Claiming that they offered clients introduction to fund managers who they had entertained them corporately.)
The final findings of the report are as follows:
Price competition
1. The FCA said it found weak price competition in a number of areas of the asset management industry. It said firms do not typically compete on price, particularly for retail active asset management services.
The regulator said it also carried out work on the pricing of segregated mandates, which are typically sold to larger institutional investors. This showed that prices tend to fall as the size of the mandate increases but said these lower prices do not seem to be available for equivalently sized retail funds.
2. The FCA also confirmed its interim finding that there is considerable price clustering on the asset management charge for retail funds, and active charges have remained broadly stable over the last 10 years.
It agreed with respondents who said that, in and of themselves, price clustering and broadly stable prices do not necessarily mean that prices are above their competitive level. However, it also found high levels of profitability, with average profit margins of 36% for the firms it sampled. Firms' own evidence to the FCA also suggested they do not typically lower prices to win new business. The FCA said these factors combined indicate that price competition is not working as effectively as it could be.
Performance
1. The FCA looked at fund performance, and the relationship between price and performance. Its analysis found substantial variation in performance, both across asset classes and within them. However, its evidence suggests that, on average, both actively managed and passively managed funds did not outperform their own benchmarks after fees. It said this finding applies for both retail and institutional investors.
2. It looked at whether some investors, when choosing between active funds may choose to invest in funds with higher charges in the expectation of achieving higher future returns. However, its additional analysis suggests that there is no clear relationship between charges and the gross performance of retail active funds in the UK. The FCA said there is some evidence of a negative relationship between net returns and charges - suggesting that when choosing between active funds investors paying higher prices for funds, on average, achieve worse performance. The FCA said similar academic studies of the US mutual fund industry have typically found a negative relationship between fund charges and fund performance.
3. The FCA said it is widely accepted that past performance is not a good guide to future performance - finding it is difficult for investors to identify outperforming funds. The FCA said this is in part because it is often difficult for investors to interpret and compare past performance information. It said that even if investors are able to identify funds that have performed well, this past performance is not likely to be a good indicator of future performance. There is little evidence of persistence in outperformance in academic literature, and where performance persistence has been identified, it is persistently poor performance.
4. The FCA found some evidence of persistent poor performance of funds. However, it also noted that worse performing funds were more likely to be closed or merged into better performing funds. In its additional work, it found that the performance of the merging poorer performing funds improves after they have been merged. However, it also found that the performance of the recipient fund, on average, deteriorates slightly after the merger, although it is not clear that this is a direct result of the merger. While mergers and closures may improve outcomes for some investors, the FCA said not all persistently poorer performing funds are merged or closed, noting it can also take a long time for worse performing funds to be closed or merged.
Clarity of objectives and charges
1. The FCA said it has concerns about how asset managers communicate their objectives to clients, in particular how useful they are for retail investors. It finds that many active funds offer similar exposure to passive funds, but some charge significantly more for this. The FCA estimates that there are around £109bn in ‘active' funds that closely mirror the market which are significantly more expensive than passive funds.
2. The FCA said it considers value for money for asset management products typically to be some form of risk-adjusted net return. This, it said, can be broken down into performance achieved, the risk taken on to achieve it and the price paid for the investment management services. But it said investors' awareness and focus on charges is mixed and often poor - noting there are a significant number of retail investors who are not aware they are paying charges for their asset management services. However it added that it had found that many institutional investors and some retail investors are increasingly focused on charges.
Investment consulting and other intermediaries
1. The FCA said it found significant differences in both the behaviour and outcomes of different institutional investors. A number of, typically, large institutional investors are able to negotiate very effectively and get good value for money. However, the FCA also said there were a long tail of smaller institutional investors, typically pension funds, who find it harder to negotiate with asset managers. These clients generally rely more on investment consultants when making decisions.
2. The FCA has identified concerns in the investment consulting market. These include the relatively high and stable market shares for the three largest providers, a weak demand side, relatively low switching levels and conflicts of interest.
3. More generally, the FCA recognise that asset managers play a role alongside others in the chain that delivers investment products to consumers. Its analysis suggests that retail investors do not appear to benefit from economies of scale when pooling their money together through direct-to-consumer platforms. The FCA also has concerns about the value retail intermediaries provide.
Remedies which provide protections for investors who are not well placed to find better value for money:
1. Strengthen the duty on fund managers to act in the best interests of investors through clarifying expectations around value for money, increasing accountability through the SM&CR and introducing a minimum level of independence in governance structures.
2. Consult on requiring fund managers to return any risk-free box profits to the fund and disclose box management practices to investors.
3. Make it easier for fund managers to switch investors to cheaper share classes. The FCA is seeking views on whether it should consider introducing a phased-in sunset clause for trail commissions.
Remedies which will drive competitive pressure on asset managers:
1. Support the disclosure of a single all-in fee to investors. This will include the asset management charge and an estimate of transaction charges. The FCA are testing ways to improve the effectiveness of forthcoming disclosure and will consult on any proposals later in the year.
2. Support consistent and standardised disclosure of costs and charges to institutional investors. The FCA recommend that both industry and investor representatives agree a standardised template of costs and charges and we propose to ask an independent person to convene a group of relevant stakeholders to develop this further. Following this, the FCA said it will work with these stakeholders to consider whether any other actions are necessary to ensure that institutional investors get the information they need to make effective decisions.
3. The FCA will chair a working group to consider how to make objectives clearer and more useful for investors, before considering any subsequent rule changes. The FCA intend to consult on requiring managers to be clear about why or why not a benchmark has been used and requiring that their use or otherwise of benchmarks is consistent across marketing materials. The FCA also propose to consult to clarify that where managers present past performance they must do so against the most ambitious target held out to investors.
4. The FCA is recommending that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) continues to review and, where possible, remove barriers to pension scheme consolidation. It said this should help those schemes who wish to benefit from economies of scale that might be achieved by such consolidation.
Proposals to improve the effectiveness of intermediaries
1. The FCA consulted on making a market investigation reference to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to further investigate the investment consultancy services. It said the three largest investment consultants provided undertakings in lieu of the reference. The FCA is proposing to reject the undertakings in lieu and are seeking views from other interested parties on this proposal - and said it is expecting to make a final decision on whether to make a market investigation reference to the CMA in September 2017.
2. The regulator is recommending that the Treasury considers bringing investment consultants into the regulatory perimeter, subject to the outcome of the provisional market investigation reference to the CMA.
3. The FCA has announced it will be launching a market study into investment platforms to look at how competition is working in that market.

Suggestion: Rachid Ghezzal

Seen him mentioned as a free transfer this summer on a Guardian article.

Quote:

Most scouts who have shown up at Lyon in the last year or so will presumably have been largely there to watch Alexandre Lacazette, but they might have kept half an eye on another product of the club’s youth system, Rachid Ghezzal. A left-footed winger who can play on either flank and cites Arjen Robben as his “reference point”, Ghezzal broke into the Lyon team relatively late, having endured a stop-start first few years to his career. The 25-year-old’s form in the season just ended was thought to be a little less consistent than what came before, but he clearly has the capability to be a terrific performer. Everton have been linked, Milan are supposedly keen and some reports indicate that Roma have identified him as the man to replace Mohamed Salah.
I won't pretend to know what he's like as I've only ever come across him when playing against Lyon online on FIFA17. Here's a video:

Video Game T.V Shows.

mercredi 28 juin 2017

Has there ever been a good one?
I was really looking forward to Go 8 Bit as it is hosted by Dara O'Briain who is a known 'proper' gamer. It's fallen way short IMO.
Never rated GamesMaster - too many challenges, not enough gaming news. Best thing about that was the Dave Perry strop.

Any good ones I've missed?

The Academy Players (2002)

Anyone remember this documentary series from Sunday lunchtime in 2002 ?

It was called 'The Players'and it gave an interesting insight over 6 episodes of the Academy at the time containing some familiar faces.

I wonder how they all got on in the years to follow ?.

Enjoy.

Uber

How their drivers can even gain a licence now without speaking English or reading English is a disgrace and dangerous.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

How the hell can they read important road signs and respond to urgent instructions from the Police or other emergency services in a possible terrorist situation or other emergency ?

Its very unfair to black cab drivers who have stringent rules and have to pass an exam. I am not sure if Uber drivers have to hold a UK driving licence (if they are not from the UK) if not they should.

We make it far too easy for companies like Uber to cut safety corners and its no wonder you hear so many horror stories about Uber drivers. :veryangry

The Greatest Video Game Ever....

No polls. I don't do polls anymore.
Just your best game ever and why.

For me it's now BOTW.
Every time you play it you think...'what's that over there...'
I love this game.

What's yours?

Discussion: Nice

Do they have any players we might want?

Disclaimer: Fully aware this is likely nothing to do with club business

Flashing red/blue lights?

Watched Ed Sheeran at Glastonbury when he got everybody to light up/hold up their phones and it looked good with simple white light.

Now this MAY be a silly idea and it only works for red and blue, obviously, but there are free red/blue flashing light apps (police lights) for all smartphones, I think it would look pretty spectacular if all our fans held up their phones flashing red and blue during evening games (may work for daytime too)?

Recommend me a box set please

Need something new to watch, and I usually go on recommendations from friends, family, co workers etc. But the well is dry and I need something new. What's decent guys? Obvs seen GOTs, walking dead, breaking bad and so on.....:p

Bitish attitudes are changing and moving towards the left .

Nearly half of Britons think the government should raise taxes and increase spending, an annual survey of public opinion suggests.

At 48%, it is the highest proportion to support such measures since 2004, according to the British Social Attitudes survey.

The survey also found the public were becoming more sceptical of the EU.

And social liberalism was rising on issues such as same-sex relationships, pre-marital sex and abortion.

There was a more traditional attitude to national security, however, with more than half wanting strong powers on terror.

LIMA A TARGET FOR PALACE

Barcelona target Lucas Lima has denied receiving an offer from the Catalan giants but revealed he has been targeted by Crystal Palace.

The Brazil midfielder, 26, is out of contract at Santos at the end of the year and has been tipped to join Barcelona in January. However, Lima says Barca have not made an offer for him.

“I have not received any offer [from Barcelona],” he is quoted as saying in Marca.

Lima did, however, reveal that he has received offers from elsewhere.

“When I decide about my future, Santos will be the first to know it," he added. "It’s my priority. I had offers from Crystal Palace, and a fortune from China, but they were not the teams I expected. I know that if I play well with Santos I will continue in the national team, I will be closer to the World Cup and that is very important for me."

I have to get tickets to Palace opener vs Huddersfield: How do i do this from US?

mardi 27 juin 2017

After 3 year of posting on here, I'm going to my first Palace game, but I'm in London only for the home opener on August 12th.

So what tips do you have for getting tickets? I know there isn't much of a resell market but there is an international StubHub for people from the US.

Is that the route I go? Or do I sign up for the Palace membership and hope to get tickets for the opening game. I have no idea how that works or if the first game is available to people like me who don't have season tickets.

Just look for a) advice how to get in the game and B) then advice on the game day experience.

Rumour: Kenny Tete

To view the link you have to Register or Login

According to Voetbal International, Olympique Lyon and Crystal Palace are among the clubs hoping to sign Ajax right-back Kenny Tete.

Tete seemed to be on his way to Galatasaray last week after the Turkish side agreed a fee with Ajax, believed to be around €3 million. However, Tete isn’t interested in the move and has turned down the offer from Turkey.

Now according to Voetbal International, Tete has a wide range of clubs to choose from with interest out of England, Spain and Italy. The report states that Lyon and Crystal Palace are among the sides hoping to snap up the 21-year-old, although no concrete bid has yet been made.

The interest from Crystal Palace seems obvious since Frank de Boer took over the club on Monday. The former Ajax boss was the one who handed Tete his first team debut in Amsterdam and is clearly still following the Netherlands international.

Summer Jobs

Probably not the right place to be posting this..

Anyone have any good advice on how an 18 year old with no experience can find some sumer work?
I've applied for at least 50 pubs and cafes but havent had any success, all want experience which is hard to get when.. everyone wants experience.

I have exceptional GCSE grades+ predicted a levels - but unsuprisingly that seems irrelevant.

Really struggling - but also really need to earn some money before i go off to university.

If anyone has any *helpful* suggestions i would be very grateful.

bi-annual referendum's

I feel that we should adopt the US style referendum, maybe once every three to four years where we vote on a series of proposals which the government of the time then implement if successful. They do this on a state by state basis which is a tad chaotic to say the least.

We often hear calls for things such as the return of the death penalty. (I'm opposed - with the exception of child killers).

Voluntary euthanasia - I'm in favour with various safeguards. We already have DNR's. Currently one has to go to Switzerland to do this.

This would also hopefully put to bed such things as fox hunting as the country would vote rather than parliament.

Thoughts?

Membership 17/18

I received membership renewal mails a while back for me & my lad. I renewed both. I received my 200 loyalty points for Gold Membership but no points for my lad's Junior Gold membership although I'm sure the comms from the club stated that he'd get 150 points (like last year).

When I now look at the website, they do state that a Gold member gets 200 points but there is no mention of any points for Junior Gold.

Has anybody bought Junior Gold membership this year? If so, did you get any points?

Thanks in advance.

De Boer v Pellegrino - who will last the longest?

lundi 26 juin 2017

Both managers heavily linked to both clubs, the appointments could have been the other way around and no one would have been too shocked

It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out with Palace and So'ton talking about the longer term, 3 year contracts to both but who will be the last man standing?

Just some light hearted discussion as there'll obviously be a few twists and turns to come.

Stand out moments from Glastonbury 2017

Bored of the new manager malarkey already so have been thinking back to the weekend. I always start the Glastonbury weekend feeling less than enthused but end up with a feeling of euphoria from at least some of the music or moments over the course of the festival. And that is just from watching on TV - one day I might even make it there.

Anyway for what it's worth, my 3 standouts this year were:
Junk Food Forever - the Amazons - great ending to a strong first set
3 Wheel-ups - Kano - thought it was a brilliant set with full orchestra and really engaged audience which hasn't always been the case for grime at Glastonbury
Mr Brightside - the Killers - their 'secret' set on the John Peel stage seemed to have half of Glastonbury present. Not a big fan usually but thought it was fantastic.

One other thing I really enjoyed hearing was a track from a new band called the Fedz - To view the link you have to Register or Login

Athletics

Wot ?! No athletics thread ?!

Here's a little whimsy to start one ....

De Grasse is considered to be one of the (few) great French admirals (though not the best - that would be Suffren) - beat the Brits at the battle of Chesapeake bay, during the American war of independence. However, the Brits were without their best admiral George Rodney on that day.
Rodney rejoined the campaign and beat the French, capturing De Grasse, and sending him to London, where he helped negotiate the treaty of Paris to end hostilities.

In the latest Golden League meeting, there were three Canadians in the 200m, including Rodney and De Grasse. This time De Grasse won the race by a streak, Rodney didn't place. Looks a talent, this latest De Grasse. ;)

The Ferryman - great theatre

If you want to see both a well told story and a great ensemble cast I cannot recommend the Ferryman enough. Started at 7 and finished at 10.30 but it was enthralling and so well done. In the interval people were saying how blown away they were by the play. Set in Northern Ireland on a farm at the time of the hunger strikers but won't say anymore than that. Every member of the audience stood up at the end and clapped until their hands felt like they were falling off. If you like theatre this really is a milestone piece that should sweep any London awards.

Advice on buying a season ticket

OK, so I was a season ticket holder for a number of seasons many moons ago (think Bruce Dyer, Matt Jansen, Lombardo era,) and have attended sporadically ever since.

However over the last few days, i've been seriously considering buying one again. It's got to the point now where i'm pretty sure i'm going to bite the bullet and get one but seeing as i've left it so late there's limited availability left and i'm hoping for some advice on where to get one.

Lower Holmesdale - Usually my preferred choice as atmosphere, view, facilities are all good and it's obviously cheaper than many other areas. However the only seats left are either well to the sides of the stand or right down to the front meaning the views probably aren't great.

Upper Holmesdale - Again not great availabilty but there are a few seats in block R, well towards the back that look like viable options. One of the more expensive options left but obviously facilities are good so don't mind paying a bit more. What is the view like from the back of the Upper?

Main Stand - No availability so that rules this one out.

Arthur Wait - Mid range pricing and pretty good availability so the views will be good but am put off by the shocking facilities in the stand.

Whitehorse - Good prices and fairly good availability. From what I remember the facilities are ok. It's the family stand but since we've stopped conceding stoppage time goals on a regular basis my ability to refrain from shouting obsenities has greatly improved so that shouldn't be an issue! :D

A couple more points to consider:

-I'll be going by myself so i'm not sure if that should factor into my final decision.

-I'll be travelling from Taunton every game. This will probably involve getting a coach to London (to save money,) then a train to the ground and obviously the reverse on the way back. Has anyone had any experience of making long journeys to every home game? (I shouldn't complain, my dad used to travel from Kent to Sunderland where he had a season ticket so my journey should be a doddle in comparison!)

-I'm hoping to take my son (who's 4,) to a couple of games this season (need to get him into the Palace way of life before he gets his head turned by the glory hunters when he starts school!) If there's no availability around my season ticket, how easy is it to move seats for one game? Is it even posssible or would I have to just buy 2 new tickets for that particular game in another area where there's availability?

Thanks for taking the time for reading this post, I know it's quite long winded!!!

TL;DR Thinking of getting a season ticket. Where should I sit?

Really good tellybox interview with the former Dutch international.

Waxed lyrical on De Boer, talked attacking intent and a 4-3-3

Green card car insurance cover in the EU

Does anyone know or deal with a car insurance company which offers constant green card cover within the EU?

I am currently with Direct Line, which, in my opinion, gives very good value and service for comprehensive UK cover, but as standard they only give me the minimum legal cover in the EU.

The green card costs £50 per month. We plan to be abroad in the EU for up to 6 months per year, which would add another £300 pa on top of a policy currently costing £525 pa.

Damage to neighbour's fence post

Hello All,

I have a building and/or legal question. I had some groundworks done and the builder must have knocked a concrete fence post with digger, as it is cracked and broken on the other side. From my side it is basically not visible, so wasn't noticed at the time.

The neighbour emailed asking for it to be repaired, using a specific fencing company (I suspect they might be friends of his - but don't know). My own builder, being very decent thus far, offered to come around and fix it this week.

The neighbour refused, demanding that a contractor of his choice is used. He said he will get a quote from them. If he was more reasonable, I suspect this could be resolved easily, but that looks unlikely. He has a history of being....a jobs worth type if you catch my rhyming slang gist....

So what happens now? It seems unfair he can dictate to me that I pay a set amount, when this could be fixed for free. It is not a complex job to replace a fence post. Does he have to claim against the builder's PI insurance? do I? Do I pay him on my house insurance?

Any advice from people who may know or have expertise would be appreciated.

Cheers chaps.

Frank de Boer discussion

Palace juniors circa 1966

My father-in-law sadly passed away a few days ago. Amongst his momentos was found this photo of Palace youth players from about 1966 (I'm guessing based on the white shirts which Palace last wore about that time).

His two nephews, Ron and Mick Harland (Ron last on the right back row, Mick front row behind the ball) are in the photo - but I'm not too sure about many of the others, perhaps older BBSers can name some more?

I first visted Selhurst Park in October 1970, but it looked far better then than this earlier picture!

I can make out the players have their backs to the corner of Whitehorse Lane and Park Road - but there does not seem to be much terracing!

Suggestion: Davvy Propper

The center midfielder at PSV, he was instrumental for them when they won the league and still one of the standout performers last season. He's a great technician with the ball and can cut teams up with one split pass. I think him, Luka and Cabaye would really transform our creativity in the middle of the park.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

As much as I love Punch we need to improve in the middle of the park hugely. Puncheon's detoriating with age, I don't feel he offers enough defensively or going forwards to hold down a first team place for a side aspiring to be in the top 10.

If Frank De Boer comes here this one may even more of a possibility of happening perhaps.

I've been told that using a VPN is highly recommended to increase online security. Do you pay for one, or use a free service? I've heard many of the latter are flawed. I try and understand it, but it may as well be in Greek half the stuff they refer to.

Anyone have the faintest idea about this stuff?

Visiting from abroad - What do I need to buy 4 tickets?

Hello. I'm looking to buy my first Palace tickets in, oh, 16 years or so. Ticket buying appears to be much more complicated these days. My apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere in the forums, but I couldn't find it.

Do I need to purchase one Silver Membership in order to be able to purchase 4 tickets for a non-A+ match?

Or are there easier means to secure tickets for a single match, such as the Ticket Trading forum here?

A US Republican politician and aides have been shot during baseball practice in Virginia, US reports say.

Police in the upmarket Washington DC suburb of Alexandria said they were investigating a "multiple shooting" and a suspect was in custody.

Fox News said House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise and aides have been hit by gunfire.

Pc Patrick Dunne

A lot of people on here will remember following the case of the murder of my police officer brother some time ago.

I got tremendous support from this site during the court case in 2006, indeed I printed the whole thread out and made a small book of all the comments and have been able to share them with family, friends and many police officers over the years.

Yesterday, Judge Rinder (I had never heard of him until recently) covered the case and, although I haven't yet watched it, I hear it was a very detailed account of the events and of the nasty killer, Gary Nelson, who was sentenced to a minimum of 35 years in prison.

The programme is, apparently, available to watch on Catch-Up, for those of you still interested, these are the details:

Brighton - time for us to grow up?

I think it's great that the rivalry will have something riding on it next season and I look forward to crushing them as they deserve. The only thing that bothers me is the tired and juvenile homophobic abuse that too often rears its head on here whenever BHA are mentioned. Starting now could we move into the 21st century and just drop it?

What have you achieved since Brighton were last in the top flight?

Well the Weed fans are certainly excited ahead of tomorrow’s fixture announcement.
Question is, What have you achieved since they were last in the top flight? (For those that don't know it was 1983)

Off the top of my head - I’ve achieved 10 GCSE’s, 3 A-Levels, now working in the financial institution. Passed my driving test, spent 6 months in Ibiza along the way, got married, secured my first mortgage, now own a house, secured my Pro B licence recently and achieved contentment :D
There are probably many things I've missed, but what have you achieved....over to you

dimanche 11 juin 2017

Has a lot of political undertones this time. USA just gone 1-0 up with a stunning 40 yard goal.

I love watching the Mexican national team play. They are so passionate about the game ( both players and fans) but they have an amazing habit of making a complete balls up of it. Unlike England who have no passion and make a habit of making a complete balls up of it!

Discussion: Transfer fund

Guys, this is only speculation but I'm interested in people's opinions.

How much do you think the transfer fund will be this summer? With any player sales that might fluctuate but currently what do you all think? I'm curious as I know we spent big in January, not sure if that will affect it? My guess is 30-40 but will be done over a couple of players rather than 1 player. Can see us going into the loan market more.

Cheers

Does the Labour party have a credible leader in the wings?

Serious question.

For all this triumphalism around Corbyn not losing too badly, I wonder why the question has not been raised in the aftermath of the election.

Given the paucity of the Tory campaing and the total ineffectiveness of May as a leader (or even a politician) it is shocking at the main opposition party's inability to make far greater inroads than they did.

Corbyn has proven to be a good soapbox preacher, but the fact remains that under him they failed to make a significant dent in the Tory lead and no doubt will continue to suffer from party infighting.

May has to go, but so does Corbyn

Do the Tories have a credible new leader in the wings?

And if so who......?

I can't think of one at the moment. Can any of you think of a serious candidate?

Tory / DUP Coalition

How can the tories possibly be so quick to attempt a coalition? Was there a prior agreement that has just been enacted?

What does this mean in terms of DUP policies that might need to be tabled to get their support?

Palace fan – Graham Clark – RIP

It is with great sadness that I share the news that a fellow Palace fan, Graham Clark, died last week.
Graham, a member of the Palace family for more than 50 years, may be known to many of you. He was a regular supporter both home and away, and held a Season ticket for many years in Main Stand.
Graham was a wonderful husband and father and a natural organiser and leader. Quite apart from ensuring a disparate group of fellow Palace fans regularly made it to away games through meticulous planning and coercion, he was also a driving force for a local Amateur Dramatic Group.
Early last year he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. He fought a valiant battle against this dreadful condition with a formidably positive attitude and good humour. Along with his family and friends, he launched a charity appeal that has, so far, realised £10,000 and continues to grow. The club, through the Palace Foundation, also supported his causes. For the Chelsea away game, Graham (in his wheelchair) and a group of supporters walked from Selhurst to Stamford Bridge in support of the MND Association.
His last game was the win over Hull, and he was relieved and delighted that the club had survived in the Premier League.
He was such great company, always full of fun and mischief. We will miss him.

Deano: The Survivor

Just felt it was needed to be said what a truly touching interview on the Eagle's CPFC website with Dean Austin, definitely worth a watch for everyone. He really did turn into a Palace legend.

Holy Sh*t! Our away fans toilets...

Amazingly they are 'going down well' with the ladies at least!

Mind you, looks like they have done a decent job based on that pic.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

(Summary couple of Stoke ladies spent the season taking photos of and rating all the toilets in the Premier League, we came out top of the league - guess their season was that exciting!)

If you could select a team from every Palace Premier League player...

... What would it be and who would it be managed by?

Rules:

- When I say Premier League, I mean this current era. 2013-14 to now.

- No loan players (unless of course they eventually signed for the club like Puncheon) I imagine practically every single one of us would choose Sakho, so it'll be more interesting looking at contracted players only.

- You should consider the best version of each player for us... For instance Delaney in his prime under Pulis, not the lesser Delaney of today.

- Ideally select starting 11 and subs (and manager(and formation!)) if you can. :)

That's it!

Some sort of attack on the Tehran Parliament Buildings

Gunmen inside the Parliament complex apparently.

Qatar, are they being scapegoated.

mardi 6 juin 2017

Apologies for raising yet another "Troubles" thread, but bring this issue up in one of the existing threads and you raise the prospect of being accused of going off topic.

It's hard to work out whats going on over there, except for talking in old cliches and stereotypes, then you run the risk of being called racist.

However I'm fairly sure the Qatar issue is a case of blame shifting, muddying water, complicating issues because the heat was on the real perpetrators of spreading Islamic Fascism.

I'm appalled that the US has got back into bed with the Saudis to the point of despair, then they go and arm them, which is basically just a feed line to ISIS.

Not sure where we go for this, but it feels like a downward spiral to me.

Question if it is the Saudis that are behind this ISIS caper, then should Europe and Britain change it's alligiance in a political and military sense closer to home and behind the Russians..... Just on this Middle East issue I mean... but really should the UK and Europe do this ?

Summer 2017 Transfers

Couldn't see another thread for this summers transfers. Quite a few already done.

Begovic to Bmouth
Bernardo Silva to Man City
Cleverley to Watford
Fletcher to Stoke
Zabaleta West Ham
Solanke to Lpool
Kolasinac to Arsenal

Liverpool also reported to the Premier League for tapping up van Dijk and their usual summer raid on Southampton. Sakho will probably end up going the other direction as a makeweight I expect.

Suggestion: Yann Karamoh

Sounds like a young lad with his head switched on. I wonder how many Premier League clubs are keeping tabs on him after Mbappe's emergence?
We could certainly offer him first team football with our need for another winger.

Record Shops

Having read an article about Harum Records in Crouch End - my childhood and teenage years way of spending all my money, made me realise that I've not actually been into a record shop for the best part of fifteen or so years. I love music and have got a huge vinyl and CD collection - most of it under secure 'house arrest' in the loft with no date for release by gaoler wife, but most of it was either bought years ago or via the Net.

Just wondered what people's memories of buying their music in record shops are, or maybe you still do? For me, going into a record shop - particularly in the '70s - was always an exciting event. The smell of fresh vinyl, the old heads hanging around the counter asking to 'road test' albums they were never going to buy, the singles bargain bin on top of the counter, the Top 50 singles chart poster taped on the door, the artwork on the sleeves, coloured vinyl, picture discs..the list goes on. Do you have the same nostalgic feelings for record shops as I do?

Please vote for a Palace fan in a dance competition

dimanche 4 juin 2017

Hi all

Could you please help a young aspiring dancer and Palace fan ?
My daughter has recently taken part in a competition called Teen Star for singers and from this year dancers . She got through the London heat and recently participated solo in the south of England final . Unfortunately she didn't get through to the national final which is due to be on Sky TV.

However they allow one more place for the act with the most public votes. Voting closes on Tuesday and as at Friday she was in 1st place ! The problem is that 2nd place is a group of dancers who are likely to have access to more voters as there are more of them .

So if you can help and vote for her we will be very grateful.

To vote please text Wildcard319 to 84222

Texts cost £1

Thank you for your support

The main thing for me is fingers crossed a new Metroid Game for the Switch. Allegedly there are two games in production, one by Retro Studios in the style of Metroid Prime and one by another studio (forgotten the name!) in the same style of the original platformer Metroids. :hi:

Hoping there might also be news on Pokemon and Fire Emblem games for the Switch. :p

BBS Math Wizards

vendredi 2 juin 2017

Hypothetical question... I've done the Excel tables and think I have the answer but would like a second opinion. I will not reveal my answer until I see I screwed up my maths.

If I retire at 62 I get $2042 Social Security. If I wait until 66 + 2 months I get $2797.

I'm trying to figure out how long before the second option actually makes sense.

I fully understand there are a lot of philosophical answers to this, but hard black and white facts are needed here.

Basically this is to back up an argument I'm having.

Thank you maths men.
