Mortgage question

Does anyone know; if you enter into a 2 year fixed rate mortgage as a couple, can you remove one of those people from the mortgage a year in without incurring a charge? I.e continue to pay at the same rate and terms but as a single?

Thanks for anyone that can help. I'm being told both have to stay on for the whole two years even if the Payment terms remain the same.
