Your famous person anecdotes
Come on, we all love to hear them.
Can be as mundane, ludicrous, salacious or damn right weird as you wish. Could be first hand or passed on from a friend.
A couple to get started...
The night we won promotion in '89 I ended up at the Crystals nightclub to celebrate with mates when to my surprise a load of the Palace team actually turned up too to join in the celebrations. Had a great night chatting with some of the lads, who were all worse for wear. Geoff Thomas was hilarious - he actually had missed the last half of the season with a hernia. Was talking to him about it when suddenly he says, 'do ya wanna see me scar?'. Before I could even answer him he'd whipped his trousers down and lowered his pants to show me while laughing his head off. Northerners! :D
Back in the early 80's a female friend of mine who was about 10 at the time was hanging out at an Edinburgh theatre. Her dad was working on lighting there at the time. Anyway, Rolf Harris turned up and she was introduced to him. He proceeded to theatrically kiss her several times right up both arms. She thought nothing of it at the time; just thought it was a bit of a joke and was just chuffed that such a famous name had shown interest in her. Obviously time has shone a different light on his actions.

Whyteleafe V Carshalton - Free Entry for Palace ST holders
Hello all,
Whyteleafe FC are offering FREE ENTRY to Palace season ticket holders who present their Season Ticket at the turnstile for our 3pm kick off at Church Road this Saturday.
We're having a decent season which sees us in the play off places, just above Carshalton in the table. We are unbeaten at home this season and will be looking to keep this up!
We play in a ground in picturesque settings, and its always a good atmosphere at Church Road so it would be great if you could join us
Apologies if this is in the wrong section, feel free to move the thread if need be. I hope Palace can galvanize and survive this season :lux:

The Meaningless Signs Thread
Walked from Victoria Station to Westminster for a meeting the other day and came across an assortment of strange signs. Not sure if I'm just becoming an old git, but there seem to be a proliferation of signs, many of which mean little to most people. Any other examples?
Fire in Purley
Above Andrews Estate Agents in the middle of town on the corner of High Street & Brighton Road!
Stoke (H) Saturday 25th November 3pm
Have Stoke tickets sold out? I cant seem to buy them online on my phone, but it doesnt say sold out, only Spurs away does.
Suggestion: Marc Albrighton
Now this is a little left field and appreciate that he is no spring chicken, but to help get the best out of Benteke when he is back fit, I really think we need to get in the best crossers of the ball, and this bloke is one of the best.
Not a certain starter at Leicester at the moment and could be quite a cheap option.
Still think it's a shame we didn't go for Andy Robertson who doesn't get a look in at Liverpool at the moment as his delivery is first class too.

Celtics striker, reportedly 17 pl clubs in for him. Surely we are one of those if true.
I never have much confidence in player froms Scottish league but this guy looks shit hot. Best striker they have had since Henrik Larsson IMO

Best ever office pranks
We have had a few over the years I think having a friend call one guy and tell him he was on who wants to be a millionaire was the best. He sent an email round the London office asking for phone a friends, the FD called him in and told him he needed to mention the company name and should buy a new suit and would be reimbursed. At the end of the day when he was told it was a wind up he did not believe anyone and said that we were only saying this as we were jealous. In the end I had to get the guy who originally called him to phone again and tell him.
Sleep Apnea
I have just been diagnosed with sleep apnea.
Now awaiting an appointment to be given a mask to wear at night.
Anyone on here got it, tips/advice (I have already been given the advice 'you are an overweight fat bastard who needs to go on a diet') ?

Podcasts....podcasts everywhere.....
Why are podcasts like buses? Miss one and there's another one along in a minute, usually with 2 right behind that.
Though I do appreciate the hard work etc some people put into their efforts...could we just have a podcast thread, instead of loads of threads popping up.
We could call it the Podcast Discussion thread to fit in with the latest trend of "Discussion" named threads.

Brand New Voice on Palace
lundi 30 octobre 2017
Good Morning, Afternoon, Evening Eagles fans,
As I am sure many of you are aware there are a couple of great podcasts that go out weekly about Palace, well good news, there is now another one giving a slightly different view.
We are a group of fans based in Australia, most have relocated but we do have some original Aussie's as well. We discuss what it is like supporting Palace from the other side of the world and how different our experiences are as well as the latest games and any general Palace chat.
We would love to hear from other Palace fans from around the world to get them onto the podcast to hear what they do in order to watch the Palace.
For anyone that has followed from abroad, does it now, or is thinking about it, it would be great to hear from you as well and hopefully you will enjoy listening, picking up tips or just reminiscing.
Thanks all and we do hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed making it.

167:
Rules are as follows
1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.
2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)
3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).
4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.
5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.
6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.
7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.
8 Singles and upwards accepted.
9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.
10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2
11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.
12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.
13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..
14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.
15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher
16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)
17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after
Two days later - A point won or 2 lost
Must be honest I am not sure how I feel . Elated at equalising with last kick of the game . Pleased we stopped West Ham getting 3 points and delighted with 2nd half performance .
However after Chelsea I felt we needed a total of 4 points over Newcastle and West Ham matches . Not sure we can afford many more slip ups . Thought we were too passive in first half and only really raised our game when we were behind .

How the magic money tree actually works

85% of MPs were unaware that new money is created every time a bank extends a loan. Were you?
Shock data shows that most MPs do not know how money is created. Responding to a survey commissioned by Positive Money just before the June election, 85% were unaware that new money was created every time a commercial bank extended a loan, while 70% thought that only the government had the power to create new money.
The results are only a shock if you didn’t see the last poll of MPs on exactly this topic, in 2014, revealing broadly the same level of ignorance. Indeed, the real shock is that MPs still, without embarrassment, answer surveys.
Yet almost all our hot-button political issues, from social security to housing, relate back to the meaning and creation of money; so if the people making those choices don’t have a clue, that isn’t without consequence.
How is money created? Some is created by the state, but usually in a financial emergency. For instance, the crash gave rise to quantitative easing – money pumped directly into the economy by the government. The vast majority of money (97%) comes into being when a commercial bank extends a loan. Meanwhile, 27% of bank lending goes to other financial corporations; 50% to mortgages (mainly on existing residential property); 8% to high-cost credit (including overdrafts and credit cards); and just 15% to non-financial corporates, that is, the productive economy.
What’s wrong with that? On the corporate financial side, bank-lending inflates asset prices, which concentrates wealth in the hands of the wealthy. On the mortgage side, house prices rise to meet the amount the lender is prepared to lend, rather than being moored to wages. The lender benefits enormously from larger mortgages and longer periods of indebtedness; the homeowner benefits slightly from a bigger asset, but obviously spends longer in debt servitude; the renter loses out completely.
Is there a magic money tree? All money comes from a magic tree, in the sense that money is spirited from thin air. There is no gold standard. Banks do not work to a money-multiplier model, where they extend loans as a multiple of the deposits they already hold. Money is created on faith alone, whether that is faith in ever-increasing housing prices or any other given investment. This does not mean that creation is risk-free: any government could create too much and spawn hyper-inflation. Any commercial bank could create too much and generate over-indebtedness in the private economy, which is what has happened. But it does mean that money has no innate value, it is simply a marker of trust between a lender and a borrower. So it is the ultimate democratic resource. The argument marshalled against social investment such as education, welfare and public services, that it is unaffordable because there is no magic money tree, is nonsensical. It all comes from the tree; the real question is, who is in charge of the tree?
What could we do instead? We could do QE for the people, overt monetary financing in which a government creates money for social benefit, such as green infrastructure or education. Or helicopter money, a central bank distributing it to everyone, either in a one-off citizen’s dividend or a regular citizen’s basic income. The nature of centrally created money should itself be opened up for debate, whose starting point is: if we agree that commercially created money is skewing the economy, can we then agree that it should be created by a public authority, even if we don’t yet know what that authority would look like.

We need to be all over this come January. Doesnt get a look in for Everton which amazes me due to their lack of options. Very good young player
Chances created
What will keep us up despite everything is the fact that every game we seem to create a number of good chances that with a clinical striker would have us outscoring most teams in the bottom half. Our build up play when the team has confidence has been surprisingly good under Roy - less direct than I expected tbh.
even with the leaky defence, questionable keeping, set piece horrors, injures, lack of depth I'm pleased we have enough creativity in our team. Cabaye is a key part of that imo when he's allowed to pull the strings and other players are making good runs into space
I think if you're into that kind of thing Expected Goals stats back this up (the Burnley game was amazing)

Have you wimped out and turned on the heating yet?
dimanche 29 octobre 2017
First frost of the Winter, feeling a bit chilly, getting those jumpers and sweaters out of the drawers, starting to drink whisky?
Welcome to Winter-time.
But have YOU turned on your heating system yet? Or are you still resisting, whilst wrapping the children in old newspapers.
Who is hanging on and refusing to kow-tow to EdF, RDW and all the others?
Who has already succumbed and happy in their pasty-skinned glow of warmth?

Lost Phone
Just remembered, my lad found a phone in V block as we were leaving. It was in a black wallet type case with maybe an iPhone inside, but we didn't look. It was found by the stairs of rows 27/28. Handed in to the steward.
Probably found by now with a little luck anyway, but just in case...

What cost West ham - an alternative view
Much has been made in the media of Joe Hart being upset about his team mate being unprofessional, and that's what cost them the win.
I would like to suggest an alternative. West ham players had already tried to go in the corner twice at least and had lost possession. So maybe it's not quite the guaranteed way to kill the game that Hart thinks.
However my main point is that the amount of time added on was due to the West ham players "professional" rolling around on the ground trying to waste time. hart himself feigned injury and had to have the trainer on (to eat up a bit more time). The fourth official was going to signal 5 minutes but changed it to 6 because a west ham player (hart i think) was getting treatment. If they hadn't feigned injury then only 5 minutes would have been signalled in which case Palace wouldn't have had time to score. The amount of time added for that injury was probably greater than it actually took. If i believed in karma that would be karma - trying to waste time meant that more time was added on!

Changing a light bulb on the BBS
So true...
How many people does it take to change a lightbulb on the BBS?
1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently.
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs
6 to argue over whether it's 'lightbulb' or 'light bulb'
Another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid
2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is 'lamp'
15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that 'light bulb' is perfectly correct
19 to post that this page is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a light bulb page
11 to defend the posting to this page saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant here
36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty
5 People to post pics of their own light bulbs
15 People to post "I can't see SQUAT!" and use their own light bulbs
7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs
4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's
13 to comment "Me too"
5 to post to the page that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy
4 to say "Didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"
13 to say "Do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"
1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that (insert politician of choice) isn't the brightest bulb.
4 more to get into personal attacks over their political views.
1 admin to ban the light bulb posters for inserting political discussion and close the thread.

Horrific Supermarket Meat
After a sandwich i made this morning with some abysmal Morrisons bacon, I fear this generation will just accept supermarket meat as the norm.
They seem to be taking us for a ride. You cant get decent sausages anymore.... poultry has no meat on it, beef is tasteless, lamb is way overpriced and this bacon i just had was so full of water and thinly sliced that it was transparent.
Saying that Cafe bacon is now some weird thick hard stuff.
Bring back the local butchers!! :lux:

Cabinet Office to investigate after minister admits asking assistant to buy sex toys
This may be the prelude to a host of claims against MP's/Lords for sexual harassment - from Harvey Weinstein to George Bush Snr - once powerful men will be under the spotlight

He took me to Soho and gave me the money to buy two vibrators. He stood outside the shop while I did. Garnier, a former City fund manager, is married with three children, and was elected MP for Wyre Forest in 2010.
Downing Street has not yet responded to Garniers case, but a separate report in the Sunday Times claimed Theresa May receives regular briefings on the sexual affairs of members of the government from Conservative whips, who are responsible for enforcing party discipline.
Labour is also braced for fresh allegations of inappropriate behaviour, as junior staff feel emboldened to come forward.
Some MPs have claimed allegations are not taken seriously enough. One former Conservative minister said: Its grim: the whole culture has to change.
Another senior Tory named on Sunday was Stephen Crabb, who stood for the party leadership last year. He has admitted sending a 19-year-old who hoped to work for him a series of messages, which he described as sexual chatter.
We exchanged messages which talked about sex but none of it was meant seriously, Crabb told the Sunday Telegraph.
We met for coffee a few times and had a glass of wine once at the Commons, but nothing more. I accept any kind of sexual chatter like this is totally wrong and I am sorry for my actions, he said.
The incident is separate from one last year in which the MP sent explicit text messages to another young woman.

Flies from Nowhere
samedi 28 octobre 2017
I know there are numerous threads on this subject but I didn't want to to hear the wrath of Dave for digging up an old one.
We are being inundated with flies today. They are appearing on the windows on the inside - moving to the light I guess. Must be up to about a hundred swotted or vacuumed up so far. Only good news is they appear a bit "dozy" so are easy to erase.
Last time this happened was after we had the house fumigated and a rat died in the chimney breast. This time, I'm guessing it is a dead something up in the attic or behind the walls (live in a wood frame building).
So far no obnoxious orders though, even from my bathroom.
They give me the creeps though when they appear like this out of nowhere.
Anyone know of a homemade replant or exterminator for flies?

Maybe...
I've vented about us having no striker, about our lack of a top flight quality goalie, the mess with FDB, the failure to develop a proper squad built for this division, it goes on.
But maybe, maybe this season we could pull off our biggest demonstration of "together our spirit is unbreakable" yet - I was ready to go down, but now I'm no sure, im ready to see us do something special, surely these players have it in them, surely we as supporters can set this league alight again with passion? It is going to be very tough, but it is exciting to image us pulling this off! Can we go into every march scrapping? Desperate for points and full of hunger. It could be magic if we do this, gotta believe.
Red and blue army march on!

Sent off for taking the piss
Quite literally as the title says Salford City goalkeeper Max Crocombe was sent off for urinating during his side's 2-1 win at Bradford Park Avenue.
The 24-year-old New Zealander was shown red in the 87th minute of the National League North game.
"He was told by the steward twice not to do it and he went ahead and had a pee," said Park Avenue secretary Colin Barker.

Superb games last season under Sam and for me our best player overall this season... He would be my pick for captain...
Congratulations on scoring two goals today
Great to see you lot on the goal trail again. Things are improving under Roy.
Again well done. :D

Can one of the mods please remove this sick idiot, the last thing I want to read on my clubs match day thread is his continuing sick taunting of Worksop, I've reported numerous posts to you but he keeps doing it.
Where is Sakho?
Not in the squad today.
Please tell me he hasn't got a serious injury.
May as well relegate us now if he has.

A bit bucketlisty this one....
And within realistic lifetime budgets please. i.e. not some private island that has underwater rooms at 20 grand a night mininum 4 nights stay, and private airplane to get there.
Name the 5 places that are the highest on your list to see before you pop your clogs. Most probably places you havent been to before, but not exclusively should you wish a return.

Commando Magazine
I used to read these a lot when I was a kid, full of daring do from our plucky boys in the RAF, Army and Navy. Recently managed to get my hands on several hundred of them for my Kindle, great art work etc....not sure about the casual racism though. And still being published after 50 odd years...but without the racism.
Taskmaster - task to beat Br*ghton fans
Anyone watch Taskmaster on Dave?
Well my mates are running a quasi taskmaster style game.
Our task is to set up a random twitter account and get as many followers as possible.
I'd appreciate some help with this, not least because most of those playing are Br*ghton fans and I need to smash them.
With this in mind I'd be grateful if any willing takers in the Twittersphere could follow me here:
@gbbofanz
(random Bake off appreciation handle. thought I could tap into something popular but it doesn't seem to be working!)
Perhaps you could tweet something like:
All #cpfc fans, please follow @gbbofanz please retweet

Well my mates are running a quasi taskmaster style game.
Our task is to set up a random twitter account and get as many followers as possible.
I'd appreciate some help with this, not least because most of those playing are Br*ghton fans and I need to smash them.
With this in mind I'd be grateful if any willing takers in the Twittersphere could follow me here:
@gbbofanz
(random Bake off appreciation handle. thought I could tap into something popular but it doesn't seem to be working!)
Perhaps you could tweet something like:
All #cpfc fans, please follow @gbbofanz please retweet

Feminist denies Transgender identity
Interesting video of a feminist deriding a transgender woman's ( therefore born male ) wish to be termed as fully a 'real woman.' The argument offered by the feminist does not seemed to be based on the traditional argument that his / her gene coding remains factually male but instead that he / she has not suffered enough under male tyranny to join the female club.
A logical ( from a militant feminist viewpoint ) rationale or just another depressing example of the prejudice and tribalism that infests even the SJW's of this world? Does a feminist allegedly seeking 'equality' have the right to refuse to fully endorse someone's gender identity based on her own prejudice or does she have a point?
There are some posters here whose opinions I await with interest.
Thoughts?

Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool only 5 points ahead of Everton and 4 points ahead of Leicester ( both sacked Manager ). With their expectations and finance , should questions not be asked about Klopp ?

Sacramento California
Another one of those threads hoping to pick some BBSers brains.
Bit obscure this one so maybe no one can help; but me and the family are going to Sacramento (via San Francisco airport) next month for an impromptu visit. Only going for a week and has all been very last minute due to the nature of our trip - medical for my 2 year old.
Anyway, never even been to The States before so wondering if anyone in the good ship BBS have experience of Sacramento or driving from San Francisco?
Tips on booking accommodation, car rentals, what to look out for, do's and don'ts, money...anything really would be very much appreciated.
We won't really be sightseeing while there but my daughter loves a swimming pool, soft play and playgrounds so any nods in the right direction on that would be great.

Light Phobias
Unlike others I don't have any of the normal phobias - as in spiders, heights, water etc..
I consider I have some quirky little phobias - things that make me uncomfortable.
I'll save people the trouble of posting with the first one.
1) Adults that take a packed lunch to work when they don't need to. :lux:
2) Contrived, large group, work social situations. Office party, gift presentations and the like. I find myself socially awkward in these situation and generally can't wait to slink away.
3) Eating in social situations. Strange one this - even for a weirdo like me. I love going to a restaurant with the wife or even my small family group. But I am not a fan AT ALL of mixing eating with drinking. It is a Chilean social thing, and I have too much Blighty in me. A drinking session should be just that for me.
Many years of six pints and a takeaway on the way home or sometimes finishing with a curry after the six pints. Even then, let's be fair, if the pubs stayed open after 11pm we would just carry on drinking - usually. I dont even really like my supping and conversation getting interruprted by someone waving a burnt sausage in my face at a BBQ.
In Santiago, I go out for a few beers at happy hour time, and the first pint is on the table and some Chilean friends are already looking at the menu. I can understand that if you have women in the group. But, personally, I would like two or three pints in me before craving for a slice of pizza. I may like my beer a bit too much, but to me the food order signals that the evening as already started coming to an end for these lightweights - 1 beer, food, another beer and they are making excuses to catch the metro. I get home and the wife says 'Oh I thought you were out for a session (as in permission slip)' .... 'Yeah, me too.'
I have British teeth as well. And I have a phobia about not remembering to pick the ugly residue out.
4) More serious I think - I have never learnt to drive. It is something that most people do when they are 16-20. It is very likely that I will die without ever learning this.
5) Anything practical - not good at plumbing, putting down floors, decorating, EVEN getting a barbecue started. I have never kicked up a barbecue. I had better just shoot myself on the first day of the apocalypse.
And yous, what are your mini-phobias?

The black kit
I've just seen a picture of players during Bristol game, not able to copy and paste, but it's very difficult to make the players out competed to the dark background. Was it not for this reason last time we had a black kit we got a 3rd kit in yellow?

JFK Files Release
mercredi 25 octobre 2017
Surprised there is not a thread already, am I the only one interested in the files release tomorrow? I think it will be interesting to see what the CIA files say as they are definitely involved in the story than is currently known.
'Shit'players who proved us wrong.
I think we normally know if a new player is any good and it's seems obvious to me that Hennessy,PVA and Mutch will never change our opinion that they are shit and they will never prove us wrong.Who has proved us wrong in the past though? The only player I can think of was David Hopkin when we signed him from Chelsea.Absolute rubbish to start with then our best player,Wembley match winner then a big money move to Leeds.Never thought he would ever curl one at the start though.....
Laptop for kids- advise needed
Looking for the BBS to help me out here. Kids need a laptop as they now need to do homework via the internet. I use phones and tablets for everything so haven't needed one before.
Can you get one for around £200 that's not completely crap? It's only really for homework but would be nice if you could browse the internet quickly etc. I know I'm not going to get anything great but any links would be much appreciated.

Your dream room..
And another one. If you are designing your own house, and you you have a little fun money left over for your man cave, your refuge, your vanity project, your hobby, what would you most like to spend it on?
Would it be for a train set or scalectric, a workshop, a cinema room, a gaming room, a games room (pool, darts, pinball), a poker palace?
What would you chose?
Let us make it a toughy, you can only chose one - but it can be a combi with the space restrictions taken into account. As in, practical and doable in a real plan or extension.

Hats off...
or On.
If I had one of those Mayweather mansions, or even a little bit of a crib with a 1 special closet for me, I would have a closet just for hats.
I am saddened to read comments like - hats are for tossers/freaks - the Brits used to love their hats. When you see an old photo of men in bowlers, top hats, or a huge football crowd all wearing flat caps, it is great.
I love the hats (and suits) of the 30s and 40s. I love my Panana hat, and even a beret or a Pablo Neruda.
When did it become the done thing to not only not wear hats, but to ridicule those that do?
Who else likes their hats?

Best way to spend £150 on port or similar.
I turn to the BBS in its wisdom......
A mate is 50 in a couple of weeks and I want to buy him a memorable present.
I have a budget of £150 and would like to buy him some port.
Ive done a little research and 50 year old bottles are available online but I dont know whether this represents good value......and theyre right at the top of my budget.
I would also consider a mixed half case either including some port or all port with the prospect of laying some down for him to drink in the future......
Help and advice needed please...

Labour suspends MP Jared O'Mara over abusive comments

Absolutely the right decision. The more you read about this the more vile the comments he made are. When he was 21 talking about raping men to death and misogynistic comments. Then in his mid 20s talking about "sexy little slags". Now someone who dated him said in March 2017 he called her an "ugly bitch" and other vile comments.
Totally right he has been suspended. He denies the comment from this year, however even if this wasn't true he has said that he has had "a journey" an is a better person. So why didn't he declare his sexist and misogynistic comments at the selection meetings, as there is no way he would have forgotten he said all this. It makes it look too much like he is apologising because he was found out.
Now yes the Tories are total hypocrits and have an open racist as their Foreign Secretary and are full of racists and sexists. But Labour needs to be much better than this. I'm glad he has been suspended.

We're taken advantage of as fans
Seems like every season there is some kind of shambles with our club on or off the pitch, but the club knows that despite any mess we may end up in, us fans will always fill Selhurst, pay for season tickets and follow the team up and down the country.
The club takes advantage of this by getting the players to mention our support at any opportunity and using us as a means of papering over the cracks in the mess we continue to support.
Personally I didn't go last night and I'm very glad I didn't, but at a minimum I think the fans that did go should be refunded or possibly have their tickets paid for for the FA Cup 3rd round.
In the long term however, when is enough, enough? It's great we stick together whenever we're in the shit but at what point do we stop showing support and make it clear that things need to change?

FFP catching up with clubs?
"Queens Park Rangers have been ordered to pay a world-record £40million fine after losing a three-year battle against being found guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play rules during their most recent promotion-winning campaign"
They have another appeal to come but the fine is thought to be the largest ever in sport. Leicester and Bournemouth also being pursued.

Rumour: Danny Ings
The Venting Thread
Im sitting here, in my room in Bristol, completely deflated after the shitshow I witnessed this evening. Im ok with Palace losing. Im used to it. Its what we do. But doing it with showing no backbone? Zero character? I just cant stand it.
Theres hundreds of other threads on here where you get spoken down to should you dare criticise Parish. Or if youre relatively negative, despite having the worst start to a Premier League season EVER. Or if you point out we only have 1 striker as weve apparently never had it so good.
So I just want a thread where people can come & vent after some absolute debacle like this evening. Because I genuinely need to let rip after tonight. If we cant do it here, more shit like that Souare shirt incident will happen. Which we dont need.

Player Ratings And Reviews: Bristol City away Carabao Cup
We started off ok and after the first goal I thought we’d win comfortably. But for PVA’s error (as bad as any defensive howler I can ever recall seeing) I think we’d have been fine. He was also at fault in the build up to Bristol’s third - which Hennessey should have saved.
Oh well.
Quite nice stadium to be fair.

The fans were an embarrassment
Yes the performance was awful but our so called brilliant support was quite frankly embarrassing. I am ashamed to be a palace fan tonight.
The treatment of Wayne and Pape was a disgrace.
The treatment of Wayne and Pape was a disgrace.
Disgusting Souare Moment
An embarrassing result, fair enough to show disappointment. But at the end of the game Souare came over to clap the fans. A group of pricks at the front called him to them. He gave them his shirt and then as he was walking away they threw it back onto the pitch making obscene gestures at him.
The guy suffered a horrific accident, has spent 18 months fighting to get back in the pitch and then gets that.
Embarrassing. [emoji53]

advantage of having a big keeper
Can some please explain the advantage of having a big keeper? As the is nothing WH does to enhance our team by being tall. How can you be scared to catch a cross at 6ft6?
Evelina London Children's Hospital

Hi all. In May next year myself and a group of friends/family (including a few Palace fans) are doing a 21.4 mile walk to raise money for the Evelina children's hospital. The walk will be between all professional South London football grounds, starting at Wimbledon, then heading to Palace, then Millwall and ending at Charlton (I would have liked to finish at Selhurst but geography makes this difficult and would add a lot of unnecessary hours!)
My baby boy Alfie was born in May (the day after we smashed Hull 4-0) and was very sick, he was taking straight to the Evelina children's hospital at St Thomas' and needed life saving treatment and we were unsure whether he would survive and if so what the long term future would be.
Whilst a long of things are still unclear, he is now 5 months old and is doing amazing, constantly surprising us. I have attached a recent picture of him proudly displaying his Palace kit for good measure.
The short version is that the hospital are amazing. They do so much for the family as well as the patient and we are grateful for everything they have done for us and Alfie.
If anybody is able to contribute anything I would be truly grateful. The link to the justgiving page is below, please feel free to read and contribute if you can. Thank you!

A reason to be optimistic?
In 2013/14, the first season after promotion back to the Premier League, Palace had only 3 points after the first 10 games. The next 28 games saw a return of 42 points. So what's the problem?

Surprised no one has started this yet.
Torn, a win would put us into the latter stages and perhaps build some confidence. Then again a trip all the way to Bristol a few days before an important 6 pointer against West Ham...
Mix and match team again perhaps? Wouldn't be surprised to see a fairly strong line up and the likes of Wilf on the bench.

Best Sports Bars - London
After peoples suggestions for decent Sports Bar/Pubs that show football in and around London please. Looking for somewhere to camp out for the day for Super Sunday on 5th November.
Anywhere from Croydon/Bromley/Beckehham up to Zone 1 and preferably somewhere that does some reasonable food too.
Thanks

Air bag light - Ford S Max
Any mobile mechanics out there in the Bromley / Beckenham area who could potentially help with this? We just failed an MOT because the air bag light came on. It happened before and a local mechanic we know just reset something and it was fine but he is away on hols and we need to get it done asap.

15 points by new year
Surely with run of games and better team structure we can get to 15 points by xmas?
It's a marathon not a sprint hence at xmas under pulis we had 15 points and finished on 48 points.
Just got to keep the belief, things can change with little runs.

Hobbies?
Another one that has been niggling me for a few good years. The Brits are a people famous for the shed and the man (generally) wittling away on some dedicated hobby,
Whether it is a plot for growing veggies, train sets, collecting Palace ciggie cards, fishing, gardening, trainspotting, stamp or coin collecting or constructing matchstick churches.
I guess I never stick to anything, but I have never had a hobby that I feel passionate about. Nothing that I can think about that gets me interested.
Yes, there is Palace, the BBS, funky music, reading, some TV, eating out and traveling. But for the most part we all like that.
I think I would quite like fly fishing, trekking, horse riding, studying, maybe model making, shooting of some kind, archery - but seemingly not enough to pursue it. I would like to look towards those final moments of life and say I have no regrets, I have tried everything, money permitting.
I know from BBS postings there are some fanaticals out there / collectors for sure like Dorking and Neil. Big Mick with his trains. Maidstoned with his singing, and Beatleboy with his karaoke.
What would you consider as a bona fide hobby, Something more than just something you like to do, a passion. And for this threads purpose, ignore Palace - although we all like collecting grounds visited.
Something that you partner would tut and raise their eyes over. LOL
I feel as an organised, listy, reasonably anally-retarded male of a certain vintage that I am missing out somewhere.

What is your hobby, your passion?
Foods intolerance?
samedi 21 octobre 2017
This is a bit of a mystery to me, so I come to the BBS for its collective wisdom.
Something like a nut allergy has been around a long time, but it seems to me that lactose, gluton, wheat intolerances are recently new to the scene.
Have they always been there and never been identified by scientists?
Is the mechanisation of food production to blame?
Are human bodies ill-disposed to process the huge variety of comestibles?
What happens in a society where one crop is 50% or more of a daily diet and someone has a problem with it?
Are other lifestle factors to blame?
Was it actually better for people to have diet where only a few staples were readily available?
Is the loss of certain foods, or the falling out of favour of certain foods a cause?
Is strictly adhering to a healthy diet actually causing these problems?
I read somewhere recently that as a species we may have peaked as far as longevity is concerned. That those people from say 35 to 90 today will live longer than those under 30 and those yet to be born. With medical advances, massive reduction of smoking, reduced drinking, cleaner air, better diet, focus on gyms, and less hazardous working environments, how is that possible?
Should we go back to eating spam fritters, saveloys, pies, fish and chips, dripping, fish fingers, findus crispy pancakes and brains faggots.

FA Vase
Popped over to watch Erith & Belvedere v Horley Town in the FA Vase today, a match not without incident. Erith 2-0 at half-time, Horley pulled one back early second half just before a brawl behind the goal involving players and a small number of spectators sparked a 15-minute delay. The game eventually finished 2-2, back to Horley for the replay.
GT Sport - the new Gran Turismo
Apologies if one exists, but I could not locate a thread on this game yet. I just purchased. Seems decent so far - very technically accomplished. In my opinion it is certainly a game you have to invest time in to appreciate - not a pick-up n play like say battlefront is. But very satisfying when you get the hang of it. Has anyone else got it yet?
Roy stop the negativity
Taking Wilf off was wrong , there was a goal or two there and a match to be won if you had kept Wilf on and brought on loftus .
And if you are going to shut up shop , then at least counter their three big midfielders/ forwards they brought on - you had Tompkins , Fosu and Jairo on the bench . Again we concede from a corner because the midfield is too small.
Three points or at least one unnecessarily lost today . For all the good play and hard work on the training field , it's also your job from the sidelines to affect play . I think you have only used three subs only once -a game we won.
Now a win against West Ham is essential

It really doesn`t get any worse.Workload and working practises are getting worse.A colleague who drives around the country fixing machines has a tracker fitted to his van and if he`s delayed his boss checks out the traffic on an AA app.

How would you rate your health and lifestyle..
Sean Hughes and the terrible passing of our friend Chocky got me think about mortality.
We can go anytime - even if we are taking care of ourselves. But we can take steps to reduce the risk I suppose. How is your personal checklist. I rate mine as average TBH
Smoking - BAD Yes, and a little too much.
Drinking - GOOD I enjoy, but nothing like the 30 pints a week plus wine back in London.
Exercise - GOOD I think. I dont have an exercise program. But I walk everywhere, everyday, and I walk up and downstairs all day. Looking to add a bit of swimming and tennis into the mix.
Food - AVERAGE. Solid and fresh. Probably not the 5 portions though. Too much meat and coffee. Hardly any butter or salt.
Condition - GOOD. No illnesses, no medication.
Stress - GOOD
Family history - both my father and grandfather died at 65. Will I outlive that.

Ostersunds FC's Europa League success
Have not seen a thread on this yet so I thought I would create one.
Anyone been following this swedish team's success in Europa league?! They are managed by an English manager Graham Potter they have a very small budget but have found unlikely success in Europa League. They plucked a few gems in the rough including some Englishmen from the conferences one of which (Jamie Hoppcutt) who scored an amazing winner in the first leg and they ended up knocking out mighty Galatasaray in qualifiers and got a standing ovation from their ultras!

They are now top of their group with 7 points, a group that includes Atletico Bilbao and Hertha Berlin! They beat Hertha 1-0 and Last night they drew 2-2 with Bilbao.
Really an impressive story if you want to read more theres a good article here

Roy Hodgson Can Make Palace A Top 10 Side
This reasoned article is looking at the bigger picture and not basing Palace's season on our disastrous start with a weakened team.
There are 30 games to go and that is plenty of time for Palace to turn their season around with having their star players back making them a completely different team to play against as Chelsea found out.
Nice to see the media looking at the bigger picture and not just judging Roy Hodgson on the Iceland result.

What have been your favourite meat eating experiences?
Another thread to lighten the mood.
All inclusive this one - although probably not for the veggies.
It can be in an expensive/cheap restaurant, self-prepared as in the BBS's own Sunday Roast or Barbecue thread, at a Barbie etc..
I have a few that come to mind.
Restaurant must be La Brigada in Buenos Aires for a steak. Although, in Chile I have never been disappointed with Asado de Tira (strip roast apparantly) - bone in steak.
Cordero en Palo in Patagonia. Lamb barbecued slowly on a cross. Plus, lamb in a local's house (doubling as a secret restaurant) in Tenerife. A whole shoulder on my plate with a couple of carrots for about 10 quid.
Not really managed a fantastic experience at my own BBQs. But some very fine moreish fillet at a Barbie in BA, and a fantastic meaty pork ribs at someone's house in Santiago - had his own 'secret' butcher.
Years back we had a free restaurant for staff at Guardian Royal with a very good young chef. One pre Christmas he put on a meaty spread and the boar was quite the tastiest porky type dish I've ever had.
Also, a kind of sandwich hot pork speciality I had in Umbria, Italy. Name escapes me.

Cash savings (New bank notes)
We have a small amount of cash savings that are held in a safe in my home, it dawned on me last night in a panic that with the £10 notes being changed I need to get these all changed up. We have kept it in a safe and out of a bank account for a reason but is there any way to change the money without depositing the savings into a bank account?
Do any banks still do cash exchanges?

Fixture Information December and January fixtures
Hey guys,
I was quite sure that I've read that the tv change deadline is around 12th October. Still haven't heard anything about the schedule, especially for our fixtures in Jan.
Does anyone know when sky and bt will select their games and with that the official schedule for January will be published?
Thanks

Newcastle up for a speedy sale
Good timing by Ashley. Team back in PL, wants a sale through before Jan so new buyer can presumably strengthen. Apparently he will accept deferred payments.
I suspect it might prove an attractive proposition.

Replica goalie kit
My Grandson (10) loves Julian Speroni. Before the Chelsea game he said: "If Julian plays, we'll win 2-1. His birthday's coming up and he dearly wants his second Speroni shirt (he has the green one from last year). The luminous green/yellow kit that Julian has worn for every game he's played this season is not available online, so I phoned the Palace shop. I was told that they have no plans to sell that kit and "if Julian plays more games, he will probably wear one of the other kits". Tell that to a ten year old. This will not do much to encourage youngsters to grow up to be PTID, and may end up with him not getting a kit or Junior membership for his birthday. :veryangry

We've got our Palace back.
Everything about today just felt right.
Against the odds, sticking it to the plastic wide boys, Zaha and Speroni back.
A dignified manager, the whole team scrapping for every ball.
The crowd behind the team for 95 minutes.
This is what makes us Palace, forget your 3 4 3, your fan zone and your megastore.
We're Crystal Palace......and we're taking the piss.

Zaha & Townsend
Could this be a potential front line without us even knowing. I Like Benteke and he offers good aerial threats but he does make us very one dimensional. Could Andros & Wilf potentially be our first choice forward line with Benteke giving us an alternative option if needed?
They simply couldnt handle Wilf and Andros today mixing it up.
Thoughts?

Player Ratings And Reviews: Chelsea (H)
I cant remember a performance better than Andros Townsends today. Outstanding.
Yohan Cabaye Appreciation Thread
It's about time he started getting the credit he deserves. Monumental today next to Luka. I still hear Palace fans question him, which is madness for me.
I said on twitter, I was going to tweet that's he underrated. But he's not - he's completely unappreciated by a lot of Palace fans. When he leaves, many will finally appreciate just what a good player we had on our books.
Well played today Yohan, keep it up you beautiful bastard.

Twickets
Be intetesting to see how many Chelsea in home sections today with this the first derby that we have had since the club working with Twickets. No buying history/memberships on there, I presume. Shame the club cannot do it themselves and only sell to people with buying history.

Jokes anyone? Need a giggle.
A Primary school teacher explains to her class that she is a Brighton supporter. She asks her students to raise their hands if they were Brighton supporters, too. Not really knowing what a Brighton supporter was, but wanting to be like their teacher, hands explode into the air. There is, however, one exception. A girl named Mary has not gone along with the crowd. The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different. "Because I'm not a Brighton fan." "Then," asks the teacher, "what are you?" "Why I'm proud to be a Palace supporter.", boasts the little girl. The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Mary why she is a Palace supporter. "Well, My Dad and Mom are Crystal Palace supporters, and I'm a Palace fan, too!" The teacher is now angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly. "What if your mom was a moron, and your dad was a moron, What would you be then?" A pause, and a smile. "Then," says Mary, "I'd be a Brighton supporter."

CPFC v Everybody
Im just sick of everyone belittling our club. The Mata 1% salary sacrifice to charity as the first PL player to do this shown in the media is good but it is the latest insult to one of our own, Wilf Zaha who has done this for years.
Our club might currently be seen as a laughing stock but our fans are better than those of most other clubs. We may well lose tomorrow to Chelsea but time to stand up and be counted.
We have had poor luck but fans stick by their club.
We will always be loud, proud and Palace.

Juan Mata
Why are all the TV news programmes making such a big deal over Juan Mata inviting a bunch of Indian kids to Manchester, donating 1% of his wages (admittedly thats still about 15-20k per week) and asking all pro footballers to do the same 1% per week? Could it possibly be because he plays for moan Utd, dont recall seeing or hearing anything on TV about Wilf making a substantial donation to charity from his wages !! (10% I seem to remember)
Name the keeper
Last week it was the Pepe Reina double, this weeks edition from the training montage.....
Any takers?
Any takers?
Has anything unlucky happened to you today?
Or on any Friday 13th? Anyone particularly superstitious about this one?
Edit: Bollocks, wrong forum. Unless someones got a story about their computer blowing up.
Press Conference Live: Chelsea (H)
Anyone heard when Roy the boy will be in front of the camera today? Nitto on the website that I can see.
Palace and expected goals
I'm sure a lot of people have started noticing 'expected goals' come up in the media more and more, so with that in mind, and our recent struggles in front of goal, I've written a blog post about how we've struggled and a closer look at Benteke.
There is some good news in there - at least we have been creating the chances! (just a shame no one has taken them and now Benteke is injured...)
Have a read! Cheers

LIFX vs Phillips Hue
Does anyone have any experience of these?
Read a lot of reviews about LIFX and how they don't need a separate hub?
For those who don't know, they are LED lights that can be linked to your phone and change your light colours/settings/brightness from an app.
LIFX I believe can be linked to Alexia of Amazon.
Anyone have any experience with either of these products or similar?

Ayhan Robben

This guy was amazing v Sweden the other night. A cool penalty, a great shot and goal. Ran himself silly in his last game for Holland. I see TFM is tweeting about him as well he might. Robben is the master. I'll miss seeing him at the finals. Thanks AR.:lux:
Promoting a business
Thought id ask in here before doing it and getting banned!
I'm setting up a domiciliary care company in Orpington (and surrounding areas) and looking for both customers and carers, am i allowed to make a post about it?
We are a local company helping local people as sick of the large companies providing care at a price rather than based on quality.
I know some post about their new book coming out etc, but didn't want to presume i could.
Ta!

Suggestion: Yoane Wissa
He's owned by French Ligue 1 (top tier) team SCO Angers, where he has a contract until summer 2019.
However, right now he's loaned to Ajaccio, who are currently second in League 2, largely thanks to Wissa's goal feast this season.
Wissa has scored 7 goals in 10 appearances for Ajaccio this season so far, which is pretty amazing. He is 21 years old, but he was under 21 on 1 Sept 2017 (his birthday is 3 Sept). If I'm not mistaken, that means we could potentially make a bid for him in spite of us having a full squad, because he was under 21 on 1 Sept (somebody correct me if I got that right).
Here's his Transfermarkt profile:

Three weeks ago he scored a hattrick away to Sochaux in a 1-6 win for Ajaccio. (Though admittedly Sochaux were down to 9 men after two early sendings-off during all three of Wissa's goals, including their main defender Alphonse).
Here's a nice goal Wissa scored last month against Valenciennes:
However, there's remarkably little about him on YouTube, no "best of" clips that I can find. Which is a good thing, as he's completely off the radar.
The £270k value on Transfermarkt is well off, and hasn't been updated for a year. There's no way he's worth that little, after the season he's having right now
I'm adding him here because we need to be realistic in our signings. We aren't going to attract any big names from the top division, who will be too expensive anyway. But really young players from the second tier of European leagues could well be a good investment for the future, and they are likely to come at bargain prices in comparison.
Thoughts? Even for our B squad?

UEFA Nations League
UEFA are launching an international tournament called the Nations League. A tournament where 55 UEFA teams are split into four leagues with promotion and relegation with the top 4 teams in the top league playing in a showcase tournament in 2019. To view the link you have to Register or Login
I only heard about it today when they announced the four leagues. England in League A. Wales, Ireland & N Ireland in League B and Scotland in League C.
Seems the major points are:
- It's a move to ensure more meaningful international competition in Europe and fewer friendlies
- The teams in each league will be divided into 4 groups of 3-4 teams.
- Teams that win their group get promoted
- Teams that finish bottom of their group get relegated
In addition Euros qualifying will be changed. It will now be 10 groups of 5-6 teams. with the top two going through automatically.
- The remaining four places will be decided by playoffs based on Nations League positions.
- The top 4 teams in each league (who haven't already qualified through the traditional route) will have a 4 team playoff to gain a place at the Euros. There will be one place allocated to each league, meaning that there will be a guaranteed place at the European Championships for at least one team in the bottom division.
Will be interesting to see how it all works out. Good idea or bad idea?
