motorbike advice

dimanche 31 mai 2020

I've had bikes for years but hardly use mine these days. I'm thinking about using it to go to meetings in a post Covid world. My motorbike gear is good quality but heavy and old. Some questions for any seasoned bike commuters:

- is there protective gear these days that is decent but light enough to wear clothing under it. Generally wouldn't need to be a full suit, just smart casual. Wouldn't really have a convenient place to change so really could just strip off the protective gear and stick it in a shoulder bag.

- any experience of leaving the helmet attached to your bike? Do they get nicked?

- what motorbike parking is there outside the congestion zone either city (I guess edge of Shoreditch) or west end?

After writing that I'm thinking I might also just get an electric bike so I can cycle in without getting sweaty but I guess not much protection there.

200:

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Suggestion: Jozo simunovic

Apparently celtic have decided not to renew his contract , I think we were linked with him at one point in the past . Maybe it could be worth a look on a free ?

Michael Angelis RIP

Only 68. heart attack.

I will best remember him as Chrissie in one of the best drama series ever, Boys From The Blackstuff. It summed up the despair that a couple years of Thatcher had created for many. To me it is a drama of historical importance. Michael Angelis was brilliant in it.

RIP.

(Though Boys from The Blackstuff is remembered as a commentary on Thatchers Britain in 1982 and captured the mood perfectly, a number of the episodes were actually written before Thatcher came to power).

Rumour: Danny Loader

vendredi 29 mai 2020

Rumour that we are interested in 19 year old Reading forward Danny Loader, who is out of contract in June,
He has been capped by England from Under16 to Under 20. He made his debut at 16 in 2017, but has made just 28 appearances scoring 1 goal. He has been prolific in the under 23 squad and has a new Agency with clients including Raheem Stirling. Norwich are also interested.

This is not a list of who the best is I hate those sorts of debates but if you could think of 5 guitarists that you love listening to or who influenced you to play let's talk about it. Sky Q box

Has anyone got one?I reached the end of my contract with virginmedia so getting sky Q box installed next month.

Virginmedia have been trying to get me to stay but have been using virginmedia to drive down sky's price.

I had an argument with lady at virgin and find there customer service appalling.

Sky customer service is fantastic and I got a good deal.

Thoughts.

Play Off Final 1997

mardi 26 mai 2020

On Palace Player now, Wembley against Sheffield Utd.
I was lucky enough to work as a steward in the dressing rooms for this season so was very close to this team, great day out.
It was me telling Hoppy to pass it, he never listened.

Sanitiser

Does anyone know what minimum alcohol level there should be in a sanitiser for it to be effective on, firstly, hands, and, secondly, on hard surfaces such as hand tools?
Ideally, I would like a robust source for the answer.
I have looked under PHE and other parts of the Government website, but cannot find an answer.
I'm asking on behalf of an organisation where I volunteer.

Wish (online retailer)

How do they sell £500 Beats headphones for £14. Are they fake? My son ordered a £200 microphone for less than £20. Took a while to come but he is very happy with it. Are they good (seemingly) quality fakes? If not, I don't get it.

Graham Maskell

It is with a heavy heart I have to report that Graham Maskell passed away this morning. Graham was a massive Palace fan who went home and away including many pre season tours. I fondly remember our time in the USA in 2006 when such a good time was had by all.

RIP Graham and say hello to all our fellow Palace family.

Rank the Play Off Finals

I see numerous threads on 'Play-Off Memories' but not (unless I'm mistaken) one that specifically asks you to rank our 4 Play-Off wins.

So, how do you rank them, from 1 (the best) to 4?

Blackburn (1989, over two legs - Wright & Bright, Dave the Mod)
Sheff Utd (1997, old Wembley - Hopkin looking to curl one, one year after the Leicester heartache)
West Ham (2004, Millenium Stadium - Dowie's heroes & broken down limos on the M4)
Watford (2013, new Wembley - Zaha's 'last game', Speroni's scoop-save & SuperKev)

You might rank them on the quality of the game, how much you despised the opponent, the 'whole day out', the Palace players who meant most to you, the game(s) you actually attended or who you attended with. Any which way you want. Feel free to include your rationale.

I need some time to think about my list but will post it up soon enough. :p

Sutton area sixth forms/colleges

I have a friend who is moving to Sutton from Bloomsbury, with her son, who will start sixth form/college in September. Do any of you fine folk know, and can recommend, any in the area? I gather she is not looking for anything too academic, so maybe a decent vocational college. Any leads appreciated.

Crystal Palace Dinosaur "damaged"...Really?

lundi 25 mai 2020

A report on the BBC regarding alleged "damage" to the much loved stone carved dinosaurs on the island in Crystal Palace Park.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

I remember these well when I was a young kid and my mum and dad used to take me to the park. They frightened me at the time and I kept referring to them as those "'orrible animals". They are an important and one of the few remnants remaining of what was once the great 1851 exhibition glass palace, and the gardens complex surrounding it.

As for the damage, one image shows the missing bits, but the other image taken before the lower jaw had been dislodged(as the report states), reveals existing crack lines on top of the nose and around the lower jaw. I would draw attention to the plant growth in the first image running down the damaged surface around the nose. This to me, suggests that a rooting of say ivy or similar has exploited the crack over time, and made it worse. The cracks originally were probably caused by ingress of water and frost.

These carvings are Grade I listed and as such, these cracks should have been attended to when first noticed, and restored sufficiently to make them safe from further frost damage and plant ingress. No evidence in the article is presented to suggest vandalism, and it seems that the account is being used to cover up neglect by the charity responsible for their care and preservation.

I hope that they have got the broken parts and will now spend a bit of cash restoring the dinosaur back to its original condition, and check all the others too in the process..

Away v BHA 1976 - ITV4

Found our game at the Gallstone in 1976 on the Big Match Revisited yesterday morning 9.50 at ITV4. Good old fashioned third division action, crap pitch, Palace outsinging Brighton - and afterwards Venables and Mullery being best of friends in the studio! Well worth a watch on catch up. Brought back some happy memories of trips down there. Lovely goal from Jim Cannon for us, but the whole thing got me thinking about a few of the names which are fading in the memory, particularly those from the end of the Allison era.

Paul Hammond - couple of good saves, but his handling as usual was a bit suspect. Think he was the one we called called Dracula. Was never going to be popular when Allison chose him over John Jackson, the best England goalkeeper who wasn't.

Peter Wall - when he joined, I remember thinking that we don't sign players from Liverpool (roll forward 40 years!!) so he must be brilliant. Was always solid in my mind.

Stuart Jump - all I could remember about him is that he was blond. And he scored an important goal somewhere, but I can't remember where.

Ian Evans - commanding presence. I can remember the horrible moment when Best broke his leg - and never apologised. Those were the days when we regularly scored from corners, and a lot of that was due to Taff.

Kenny Sansom - so much promise, so sad to see what has happened to him now. So he got an OG for their equaliser, but he still showed what a great prospect he was. Certainly ranks alongside Ashley Cole as the best ever England LB.

Jim Cannon - played in midfield that day. Always loved his competitive spirit, it was everything a Palace fan could ask for. My favourite Palace player, first one I could say I saw his whole career.

Nicky Chatterton - it was always assumed he got in because his dad was the groundsman. Another one who worked hard, probably the one about who you would say 'good team player'.

Paul Hinshelwood - he also played in midfield that day but is best remembered at right back. Mind you, I think he started out as an unsuccessful forward, so presumably gradually moved further back (Benteke anyone?) Think he drank in the Cricketers at the bottom of Spout Hill - is it still there?

Barry Silkman - made his debut that day after Peter Taylor went to Spuz. Taylor was a hard act to follow, but I think Silkman was quite popular - he did have some good skills, if not the end product. Mind you, he's in the mucky world of football agents these days, so dropped down in my estimation.

Dave Swindlehurst - loved him. Big bloke, a bit ungainly but he put himself about, was reasonably nimble and had a good shot on him too.

Steve Perrin - always a bit of an odd fit for me. I think it's because to me he didn't look like a footballer. He was a sort of striker, but not quite, probably what they would call a 'false 9' now.

Phil Holder - sub that day. There's a bloke you could look down to and look up to at the same time. Great tackler, but won sod all in the air.

One more thing from watching the programme. Did we really sing You'll Never Walk Alone'? Sounded like it. I can't stand that scouse song. We didn't have all the razzmatazz of the premier league in those days, we stood together on the terraces, players weren't paid a fortune so it was easier to relate to them.

As they say, nostalgia ain't what it used to be

Rumour: Valencia interest in Guaita

dimanche 24 mai 2020

Been hearing a few rumours the last week, but a fella Colin Millar who is well up on his Spanish football has put a tweet up that Valencia have opened talks with regards to resigning Vicente Guaita.

I really hope we rebuff this but given he has a year left, might be difficult to keep hold of him? Looks like we might have to start our search for a new number one all over again at this rate. :sob:

Cubase

vendredi 22 mai 2020

Any Cubase experts on here? I'm new to the whole thing, but trying to record some stuff using my synthesiser. I've reached the point where I've managed to finalise a few things to a reasonably decent level but, frustratingly, have now reached the limit of my knowledge and technical know-how.

I realise there are a lot of tutorials out there on YouTube, but probably require a bit of one-to-one guidance to solve a few issues and get me back on track (see what I did there?) :) Any help from those in the know would be very welcome!

Your favourite Female Voices

Figured this is an idea/topic worthy of a thread.

Pick 3 of your favourite female voices, that soothe, entice and generally just enjoy. Can be a singer, just general speech or even an acting voice.

I'm going to be hard pushed to find an Aussie one I will admit.

So here's mine.

Karen Carpenter... I don't think many can match her singing voice.
Sharon Horgan. Could listen to her all day, angry, jovial or even in her normal everyday mode.
Lily Allen. Actually making the Cockney accent quite charming and dare I say seductive, quite an achievement that.

Player debate #4 Hilaire vs Salako

Both great wingers and both were part of two of our best ever teams. Who gets your vote?

Car Insurance Accident Claim Advice

Please could anyone who has been through similar or knows the system advise me.

Last June a neighbour bumped my car whilst it was parked in the road. I was away at the time but they kindly left a message admitting liability.

I informed my insurers. Their associated claims company contacted me and told me that if they took care of it (rather than the insurers) I would not lose my no claims bonus and would get a 'free' hire car. I will now always regret agreeing to this.

Sure enough they provided a hire car (for which I signed the usual agreement) and took my car away for repair. That was where the problems started.

My neighbour's insurance company wouldn't agree to the frankly ludicrous sums claimed for the hire car (£60 a day for a base model Vauxhall Corsa) and £3k for a bumper replacement. As a result, my claims company started sending ever more threatening letters to them and me threatening us with a day in court to settle the claim.

I objected and asked why I was being asked to court as a witness when I wasn't even here when it happened. They stopped sending threatening letters to my neighbour but carried on sending them to me and have now said they will be seeking to recover the full costs of the claim from me for 'failure to cooperate'. The only thing I have insisted on is being fully briefed so that I know what I should be answering in any court case and what the implications are.

Has anyone been through something similar? Do I need legal representation to fight this?

Portable air conditioners

With the joy of lockdown, being stuck inside and the sun coming out has anyone purchased a portable air conditioner unit recently and are they worth it?

My fan has just broken and I’m not interested in getting one installed permanently so interested in recommendations for a smaller unit.

I’ve seen a few on amazon quite cheap but don’t want to throw money down the drain.

Australia v China... Round one.

lundi 18 mai 2020

Starting to look like Australia has bitten off more than it can chew.

Things starting to get serious here, with trade embargos starting to increase.

Overnight Barley exports to China have been stopped, with an 80pct Tariff imposed.

All this as a result of Australia being first up in asking for an international inquiry into the Virus outbreak in Wuhan.

Not sure what the result will be of this, it could get damn serious, as the rhetoric is starting to take a dramatic turn.

Unfortunately, Chinese citizens in this country are being scapegoated quite badly.

Hopefully, this all settles down. Given that Australia seems to be acting as a trumpet for Trump.... it may well not.

Turntable repair

Morning all,

My late father, bless his heart, had a rather lovely Pioneer PL-L1000 turntable stashed under his bed for the best part of 10 years which I believe he always told himself he'd get repaired as it has some issues, the specifics of which I am not sure about.

Anyway I have now decided to take on the Japanese shelf filler to see if I can get it restored to its former glory. Does anyone have a repair shop/man in a basement they can recommend in South East London for this kind of diagnostic/repair work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Rumour: Zaha Summer 2020

Just to getthis one going - Sun on Sunday reporting the Saudi take over at Newcastle could see them bid for Wilf

"Mauricio Pochettino is understood to be the prospective new owners’ preferred choice as manager if they decide to sack Steve Bruce — and the Argentine has made it clear he would want total control over signings.

But that has not stopped soundings being made about the availability of winger Zaha, valued at more than £60million by Crystal Palace.

The Ivory Coast star, 27, has ambitions to play Champions League football and wanted to leave the Eagles last season.

But should Toon invest huge sums on their squad he could be persuaded to move to the North East.

Pochettino showed interest in Zaha when in charge of Spurs so it may be a deal that works for everyone."

The ultimate 1+1 = 5 story

Discussion: Realistic Summer Transfers?

Who do you think we could realistically sell and buy this summer? Or what do you think the plans could've been before the world turned upside down?

I think we would've made some big changes, bringing in Maja, Lewis, Ferguson and Benrahma. Also we might have shifted Benteke, Sakho, PVA and maybe even Meyer.

Your opinions?

Best Goal You’ve Seen at Selhurst (You-Tube proof if possible)

In my opinion (of course!) Kasami’s goal against us was technically extremely difficult, the pass from the halfway line, the first touch on his chest whilst running and then the volley. Rarely gets a mention in best goal discussions for some reason. I was there and I remember my jaw hitting the floor at the time.

Pandemic 2020: How does it effect property?

samedi 16 mai 2020

Are we on the cusp of a profound change in housing/property across the developed world? Speaking for my city NYC there’s a lot of factors encouraging people to sell up and move out.

In my industry, film production, the shift to remote working had been pretty seamless. All the workers I have spoken to have been told they’ll be asked to continue to work remotely even after any distance guidance is lifted. I expect this is common for many industries. The market for office space must be collapsing.

NYC has seen a significant reduction in population, especially in higher income groups. Plenty left to stay in second homes or live with family in areas with more space and lower infection rates.

Estate agents are seeing hugely increased interest in properties in the suburbs and smaller cities, big drop in interest in NYC itself.

House prices and rental costs are vastly lower outside than of NYC. Schools better, quality/ease of life better.

The nightlife and arts/entertainment scene that makes NYC so vibrant is at a standstill. The subway is wholly unsuited to distancing.

Summer is going to be brutal for many with so many of the places people usually go to chill and cool off closed. The headlines are going to be about AC units rather than ventilators if we get a hot one.

Multiple economic stressors. The US is looking at 30 million unemployed. There’s going to be many unable to meet rent and mortgage payments. There’ll be a significant drop in unemployment payments by the end of July.

There’s been no stimulus measures for the property industry. Developers, with projects stalled, must worrying about cash flow.

I can see confidence across the whole property sector collapsing in NYC.

I’m less familiar with the exact circumstances, but much of that must also be true for London, and probably many other big cities.

There’s plenty on here with vastly better knowledge of the property and financial sectors than I. Any talk about the future of property?

Internet Blackmail

I just received an email attempting to blackmail me. The threat is they'll release a 'video' of me. But no such video exists. I don't use computers like that.

The irritating bit is that the password they quoted to me is one I used sometime ago, so somewhere along the line they've acquired this info. I don't use it now though, and obviously I'll now be changing all my passwords.

My question is, can these people be traced and or/prosecuted? Or is that just a lost cause. Ideally I'd like to perpetrate an act of violence on them - not something I'd normally think of, but justifiable in this case I think.

Also, for people who do use internet porn, this could be extremely worrying....

I am aware, ************, is your pass word.

I require your complete attention for the next Twenty-four hrs, or I may make sure you that you live out of guilt for the rest of your existence.

Hi, you don't know me personally. Yet I know all the things concerning you. Your present fb contact list, smartphone contacts along with all the virtual activity on your computer from past 131 days.

Including, your masturbation video, which brings me to the main reason why I 'm crafting this e mail to you.

Well the previous time you went to see the sexually graphic web sites, my spyware ended up being activated in your computer system which ended up logging a beautiful video clip of your masturbation act simply by activating your web cam.
(you got a seriously strange preference btw lmao)

I own the whole recording. If you think I 'm messing around, just reply proof and I will be forwarding the particular recording randomly to 7 people you recognize.

It might end up being your friend, co workers, boss, mother and father (I don't know! My software will randomly pick the contact details).

Would you be capable to gaze into anyone's eyes again after it? I doubt that...

Nonetheless, doesn't necessarily have to be that way.

If you send out this 'donation' (let's call this that?). Immediately after that, I will vanish and never ever make contact with you again. I will eliminate everything I have in relation to you. You may very well carry on living your ordinary day to day life with no concern.

You've 1 day in order to do so. Your time will start as soon you go through this mail. I have an special code that will inform me once you go through this e-mail so don't attempt to act smart.

Underrated and Overrated players

mardi 12 mai 2020

Overrated:

Paddy McCarthy. Talked about highly but even at Championship level just wasnt very good. Gave his all but when Damo and Gabbidon came in you could see the gulf in class.

Underrated:

Scott Dann. Nearly 150 Premier league caps for us and played a huge part in staying in this league. Even those last 3 games before lockdown he was great. Doesnt get the recognition hes deserved. Up there with the best cbs we have had.

Who are yours over the years?

Player debate #2 Bright or Morrison

Both top strikers with a real passion for the club. Morrison however didn’t play in the top division for us as Brighty did. Both played with great strikers so were involved in high scoring teams. But who was better?

Bright made 286 appearences and scored 113 goals
Morrison made 316 appearences and also scored 113 goals

Bright was part of one of the best Palace teams ever, and gets my vote but who would you pick?

New router advice needed.

Is there anyone on here who has a good understanding of routers and home wi fi set ups and can give me some advice on a new router to get to replace my virgin hub 3. I’ve only used the virgin hub 3 and I’m struggling to get wi fi on the 1st floor! Reading online the hub 3 has so many negative reviews and replacing it seems to improve the wi fi coverage and general performance of the broadband. Does anyone have any recommendations? I know there are lots of systems mesh systems etc and different set ups that are confusing so I’m after any recommendations. I was looking at the NETGEAR nighthawk but again any help will be appreciated.

Movavi Video Editor question

Probably quite simple for someone to sort if they have used this for a while but I am stuck.

I am doing a birthday video for someone's big birthday who's party has had to be put on hold due to the pandemic, basically a selection of short happy birthday messages from his mates. followed by a few photos and some background music and some photos before onto the next birthday wishes video.

His daughter sent her video a bit later and I thought I could slot it in to the existing timeline but I am struggling how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I think i spent too much time on trying to do video in video because he is a BHA fan and everytime one of his BHA customer mates send a video I put a little video in the corner showing something palace related :p

Gift Ideas

Forgive the self indulgence but this could equally apply for anyone currently looking for ideas for someone else...

It's my birthday coming up in a few weeks and I've been asked what I want but despite going online to various websites I'm coming up very short on ideas. Naturally at present needs to be deliverable really.

So any ideas? Preferably more interesting than just a bottle of wine, chocolates, clothes, aftershave etc. Possibly something you've recently bought/been given?

Palace blessings in disguise

vendredi 8 mai 2020

I've been thinking of a few moments when it appeared something bad had happened for our club that turned out to be blessings in disguise.

1 - Administration the second time was in some ways the best thing that happened for the long term future of the club. Obviously there were individuals who were badly affected by it but in terms of our club's future it was a turning point that allowed us to progress.

2 - Murray's cruciate knee injury. Some may not agree with this one but up until the moment Murray went down, we were very much 2nd best to Brighton in the play-off tie. When Wilbraham came on, his ability to hold the ball up started to get Wilf involved, the whole team looked better. That carried on to the 2nd leg and worked for us in the final too.

3 - The defensive injury crisis that led to Wan-Bissaka getting his debut. Some great performances followed and the money we made from his sale will have made a huge difference to the club and helped plug a significant gap in our finances.

4 - Dougie deserting us. His management career after he left showed that he is capable of good winning streaks but they never lasted very long and were often followed by bad and longer lasting runs of form. I don't think we would have gone up if he had stayed and whatever people think about Holloway, the fact is he got the job done and without him we almost certainly would not have had Kevin Phillips to convert that penalty.

5 - The 5-0 thumping at Wigan that led to a management change and promotion.

6 - losing out first 3 games of the 12/13 season, which led to the much discussed 'heated conversation in the car park' and a number of great signings before deadline day which helped us to promotion.

So are there any other moments people can think of, when it seemed to have gone but ended up very well?

VE Day 75 years Anniversary

jeudi 7 mai 2020

Being commerated in Berlin this year even in lockdown

Not many of the old gurad left now. I remember us saying that for 1918. Time goes quick.

The most astonishing piece of history ever. Even with all the war films and Nazi documentaries it never gets dull trying to work out wahat was going through leaders minds. The generals, the troops, the jews and other persecuted groups, the prisoners of wars, the collaboraters.

Almost nowhere was untouched except for deepest Africa and some of South and Central America - and some Nazis even escaped there (plus the battle of river plate).

Some key moments were really on a knife edge - Battle Of Britain, the decision to invade Russia, the Germans not getting to Moscow or winning Stalingrad, the Germans not priducing the Bomb first, the Yanks winding up Japan, Midway Island, the Japs deciding to go for Midway rather than Australia, Singapore falling, the desert campaign swinging the UKs way. Hitler not being woken on D Day and resources taken away from that defence, the Battle of The Bulge. and battle resources used to transport and kill jews, and more and more.

I think it was staggering what Germany managed to achieve, and that it took the combined efforts of many allied nations to defeat the Nazis.

Why were Italy, Germany and Japan so hell bent on expansion and empire. Were they that jealous of England, France, and The US.

A staggering period of 13 years if you include the rise of the facist powers, Spain, China. The New Deal etc..

And the ideologies being tested all over the shop.

PC has started waking from sleep mode on its own

mercredi 6 mai 2020

Noticed something odd recently.

My PC is set up to, and does go to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity, i.e. the screen turns off.

Normally to bring it back to life I jiggle the mouse or hit a few keys and the screen comes to life to the PIN screen. After entering the code I'm back where I left it.

For the last few days, I've noticed the screen is coming awake on its own, opening up at the PIN screen. If I don't touch it, it goes back to sleep eventually, but then wakes up again (it seems like about 5 minutes, but not actually times it).

I don't recall any updates taking place recently, unless they snuck it by in the background. I haven't changed any settings, or added any devices.

Some Googling would suggest Bluetooth activity, but there is none (all turned off). Also to change some pretty deep settings which I did to no avail.

Anyone seen this, have any suggestions?

Please and thank you.

Neighbourly dispute advice

A small one that I am hoping can cleared up quite quickly

We have a tree that has grown to about 35ft now and is next to the fence, our neighbours fence, but well away from their or our house

My neighbour mentioned last year that it is affecting the fence, causing a slight bowing of the panel, which I can see, its very minor, and doesn't appear to have affected the cement posts nor the cement kickboards the fence panels sit on nor does it stop the fence functioning

Working from home and looking out the window I've just seen him taking pictures of it so am expecting a knock later to discuss it more seriously

My question to you all is does he have a leg to stand on? Can he request I cut my tree down? It's only a fence, and when I look at the other side, my fence, I can see it bowing and couldn't care less tbh, same with the fence at the back

Dog walking during lockdown

mardi 5 mai 2020

Only just heard that dogs are supposed to be on a lead during lockdown. I've not been doing that as I didn't know. Our dog is harmless though. Might lick you to death.

What do people think about this. Is anyone doing this?

HeForSheAtHome

I'm interested to see how people on here will react to this.

A lot of people know about the increase in domestic violence that's being associated with lockdown in a number of countries. Calls to helplines are up hugely for example - tripled in China, Cyprus and Singapore, doubled in Lebanon and Malaysia, up at least two-thirds in the UK (these are numbers for a few weeks back).

Less talked about is the way in which there's more work in the home to do (because people are at home more and kids are not at school), how that work is being shared and what that means for women.

I'm sure all Palace supporting men do their fair share, but globally women generally do three times as much unpaid work at home than men, and still do more even when both men and women in the home are also in employment.

Some of you may have seen the HeForShe campaign which Emma Watson fronted about men supporting efforts for equality between women and men. There's now a HeForSheAtHome push to encourage men to equally share work at home while we're in lockdown: To view the link you have to Register or Login

On twitter for example this has made quite a lot of men angry. I've seen posts on here that suggest to me that some of the BBS posters may feel the same. But what do people think? Do we all agree at least that men and women should share housework and childcare equally? If we disagree, why? And if we agree, how well are we doing at living up to that belief?

Has lockdown made you love your home more or less?

Sorry another thread from me again :D

Home for most of us is a place we can’t wait to get back to after a hard day at work.

We’re all now missing the freedom of going to the pub after work or visiting friends and family and the majority of people are either working from home or furloughed.

How has being at home all this time made you feel about home?

Do you love it or hate it ?

Has it made you want to move or do home improvements ?

For me , even though it’s been a lonely place without visitors I actually like it more and finding it at times quite cosy. However, a friend of mine is liking her home a lot less and looking around at all the stuff that needs doing but can’t be done at the moment.

How it the season plays out...

These are the options as I see it. What do you think will happen? Im happy to amend or add options as this is just what I currently think what the options are.

Here is more explanation on the options as I see it:

A: Everything goes perfect. The league is finished with no major disruptions to clubs with infections. This is the best result for everyone.

B: The league attempts it but certain clubs unfortunately get infected players, they have to field weakened teams to fulfil the fixture list or risk losing the game 3-0 by default. Certain teams lose games due to their weakened teams, this promotes further discussions over what is fair or not. The season is finished but it now poses more questions than it answered.

C: The league attempts it but a number of club can’t even field youth team players. The league decides this has become untenable and cease games and decide a new system to end the league without playing. Questions now arise at the integrity of the Premier League attempting something that put people at risk pointlessly.

D: The league decide that it is not possible or the government order it. The league then decide a method of finishing it without playing games.

Next years kits

About the time we would discussing the new kits - obviously other stuff going on but as a bit of relief does anyone have any thought, ideas, rumours, mock-ups?

Where did you watch Crystanbul?

I was just watching the last ten minutes on the FYP Facebook page. Can’t believe it’s been six years,,

I was travelling through the states at the time.

I found a bar in Alexandra, Virginia showing it live. At the start there was hardly anyone there, local people noticed my Palace top and started asking me questions and I started telling them about us and they were genuinely interested. When we went three nil down a couple of them bought me beers and shots to console me:D then when Damo scored the whole place changed atmosphere.

Even Americans who had never heard of us knew something was happening. When Gayle scored the third goal the entire bar which was packed by now went mental ( remember I’m the only actual palace supporter in there) and beer was flying everywhere, it was proper limbs and I didn’t pay for another drink all night

I’m so glad it happened that way in a random bar in a random city on the other side of the planet to where I live because it’s something I’ll never forget

Dave Greenfield dead

lundi 4 mai 2020

Didn't see a thread on this.

Not my favourite band by a long way but it's terribly sad when people of your musical generation die.

We all know we're going to pop our clogs at some point but 71 still seems too young. Covid19 apparently.

God rest in peace.

Player Debate #1 Milivojevic or Riihilahti

Both really solid in midfield and both passionate about the club. Who’s better? Not sure how I would call it myself

Riihilahti made 157 appearances and scored 13 goals.

Milivojevic has 115 appearances and 26 goals.

RIP Dave greenfield.

From the stranglers has passed away from Covid 19.

Sunglasses, to hide behind.

No, not the shit Tracy Ullman song, that would be in the music forum.

Is it just me or does anyone else think its rude to have a one on one conversation with someone wearing sunglasses so you can't make proper eye contact?
I try to take my glasses off when talking directly to someone, not so much if in a group though.

Double Storey Extension

I am in the throes of purchasing a new house and one of it's most redeeming features is the scope for extension. Infact, I would probably go as far to say that proceeding with the purchase is dependent on being able to extend. Several other properties have done it in the same road, so I am confident that planning won't be a problem.

I have contacted a number of builders to request a rough quote, although none seem to be responding - I can only assume that I am not worth their time at the moment as I don't technically own the property, either that or my lack of detail is putting them off!

I am therefore throwing it out to the good ship BBS. I am looking at extending by 41sqm to include Dining Room/Utility and Master ensuite upstairs. Finish would be basic. Does anyone have a very rough idea of costs? seems it can range from anywhere between 1k-1500k per SQM when you look online? Would be interested if there is anyone on the BBS who is in the trade who can contact me to discuss or anyone who has been through a recent similar extension.

Cheers,

TM

Is there a particular thing that has made you feel old?

dimanche 3 mai 2020

I am 51, going on 19. Age really doesn't bother me. We get shocke dat famous people from our past dieing, and thats sad, but its never really made me feel old.
This is a strange one , for me at least, but I was watching The Real Marigold Hotel on Iplayer today, a group of pensioners that go to see if they could retire in india, and one of the party was John Altman, Nasty Nick from Eastenders of old.
I thought how the hell can he be a pensioner, turns out he is 67.

That is the first time I have felt old.

BBS Virtual Quiz Team - Specialised Subjects

I’ll take the questions on 90’s indie music or possibly Movies.

What would your specialised subject be ?

Looking for a particular pennant

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a good image of a particular pennant that I used to have hanging in my room when I was a kid-it was the Division 2 champions 78/79 one, with the team signatures printed on it- I look on ebay but have never seen one. Does anyone have one? I'd love to see it again! Thanks.

Alone in Lockdown

Lockdown alone has at times been absolutely dark and soul destroying , there’s no worse place than loneliness. However, it’s given me more time to think about the simple things we take for granted, and I hope by learning lots about myself I’ll never take them for granted again.

I’ve tried to fill my time - decorated the bathroom, spring cleaned the whole house, washed curtains, sorted out cupboards and paperwork, done the garden , painted garden furniture, binge watched TV series etc.
I do my eldest sons shopping and take it round to him as he is vulnerable , so it gives us a bit of face to face contact (at a distance) he stands one end of the car and I stand at the other and we have a chat.

I’ve chatted to some nice people in the queue for the supermarket and I’ve heard selfish people moan and complain about the queues.

I have a lovely chat with my neighbours a couple of times a day over the fence and we organise a little show for all the other neighbours on the Thursday night clap , so we’ve made dressing up costumes too which has been great fun.

I really feel for the people that haven’t got many outside contacts , the elderly, the homeless and the victims of domestic violence through this and that’s what makes me put my own lonely place in to perspective. When all this has finished (or is slightly better) I definitely want to do some volunteering to help one of these categories of people.

I downloaded zoom in the hope I might get invited to one of these quiz things .....but I didn’t lol, so deleted the app in the week.

What didn’t help was my youngest completed on his new place and moved in February 20th , I’m happy he’s got a new place with his girlfriend , but I’ve missed him so much.
I miss hugging my boys immensely.

How has anyone else alone coped?

Palace in Film and TV

I put together a montage of clips, where Palace are mentioned or appear in some form in films or TV that is unrelated to football.

I've had to edit a couple in a way that avoids You Tube's copyright systems.

Live Aid - looking back

vendredi 1 mai 2020

I know there had been previous stuff like George Harrisons Bangladesh concert but at the time Live Aid felt really ground breaking.

Watching some of the footage now there were some great perfomances. I had forgotten a lot of who was there (and who was missing).

Is this the right set list for the time considering how quickly they had to organise it. I anticipate U2 getting a bashing on here (mullet etc) but thought they were brilliant.

Some were in the States of course, like Simple Minds

Here it is (in order)

Status Quo
Style Council
The Boomtown Rats
Adam Ant
Ultravox
Spandau Ballet
Elvis Costello
Nik Kershaw
Sade
Sting
Phil Collins
Howard Jones
Bryan Ferry and Dave Gilmour!
Paul Young
U2
Dire Straits
Queen
Bowie
The Who
Elton John
Queen
Paul McCartney
Band Aid

2020 The Year of the Beard

Are you shaving regularly or have you let it grow out?

Obviously this is thread that needs pics and I will post mine later.

Mine makes me look like Harold Shipman. Not a great look. LOL

Any phone/BT experts here? Help for a school.

We're having issues contacting children/parents on withheld numbers for our weekly checks from home. For obvious reasons we have to do it via a withheld number.

Is it possible to somehow reroute our phone calls to parents via the school number, so that they are more likely to pick up and know that it is the school calling? Is there an easy and preferably free way of doing this? It would save staff having to go into school and often travel on public transport in order to simply make calls that could me made from home.

I hope that makes sense. Many thanks for any advice.

[OT] Does anyone remember the name of this PS1 football game?

I have been thinking about this old football game on PS1 i played way back but I can't for the life of me remember the name or find it on the internet. The only thing I can really remember about it is when you are on the team selection screen there were like little cartoon kind of characters showing you the team kit?

If anyone knows please help. It is driving me crazy! lol
