PALACE PAST AND PRESENT EMOJI QUIZ

Bored?

Love Palace?

This crap Palace emoji quiz is for you!

Made this for some mates yesterday and thought some BBSers might like to while away a few minutes having a go themselves. All players are from the 80’s onwards.

Disclaimer....some of them I’ve taken a bit of liberty with the English language but they’re all doable with a bit of thought. Will try and fill in answers as people get them so we know where we are.

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Cancelling BT sport

Has anybody tried, and succeeded, in cancelling their subscriptions? I've had another fruitless attempt at ringing them this morning with the usual messages that l'm in a queue, short staffed (which l understand) etc.. I cant see any way on line to cancel although l can upgrade easily enough if l want to.

BT appear to have buried their head in the sand. Small amount of money l know (£16/month) but another business that l will add to the list of who to cancel/avoid when normality returns.

Silent Cinema

dimanche 29 mars 2020

At the start of the year I decided to (re) read David Robinson's excellent Charlie Chaplin biography and work my way through every one of Chaplin's films (except the one that didn't survive, for obvious reasons).

My 4 year old daughter watched a few of them with me and really enjoyed them - particularly The Kid.

I've been a Chaplin fan for years but whilst I worked my way through his entire career I realised how little I had seen of his contempories and what else was going on the time.

So I've since started to expand my knowledge and started to work my way through a number of other silent classics. Some of which I had only seen clips of in the past, some I had seen nothing of at all.

Anyway, I've been finding it really interesting. I found a wonderful Thames TV documentary series from the 80s about silent Hollywood on YouTube. Plus a short series on European silent film by the same people (I think). Unfortunately the final episode (6) of that doesn't seem to be there and you can't buy the series anywhere.

So far I have watched three DW Griffiths shorts and Sjostrom's The Wind. A collection of Melies films on a DVD collection. The great Sunrise: A Song of 2 humans (which always comes out very high in sight and sound's greatest films of all time list.

I have a few more Blurays I was given for my recent birthday to work through.

I'm aware it's quite a niche interest but I wondered if any other BBSers have an interest in silent cinema.

Rumour: Nathan Ferguson Summer 2020

samedi 28 mars 2020

Just seen via twitter that the Standard are reporting this as being close to being sorted for him to move to us in the summer.

This was in London Football, but I can’t see a hard link to anything in the Standard.

Palace close to Ferguson deal

According to the Standard, Crystal Palace are closing in on completing a deal for West Bromwich Albion defender Nathan Ferguson.

Ferguson was close to signing for the Eagles in January but the deal fell through due to a knee problem that the defender had, discovered during his medical.

The 19-year-old has made 21 appearances in the Championship this season, and with his deal at the Hawthorns expiring in the summer, it is set to cost Palace very little to sign the young defender.

Setting up a freelance consultancy

Hi all,

Appreciate doing this during global economic meltdown isn’t the best timing, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice for setting up as a freelancer/consultant?

I’m a programme manager for a charity currently, and want to continue along these lines as a consultant.

In particular should one set up a company?

Also any advice around getting a website and marketing would be great!

Cheers

Discussion: This summer's transfer window

Has there been any news on how this summer's window is going to work? If the season isn't finished in normal time, would the transfer window have to wait until after as usual, or would they start it on the usual date regardless of whether all the games have been played?

Life after Corona

vendredi 27 mars 2020

One hopes and expects we will get through these times.

The world will no doubt change as a result.

So, how exactly will it?

I would imagine hygene will remain on overdrive. Washing hands etc will be more commonplace.

I would also expect to see contracts include virus related clauses... Especially in football.

Any other thoughts?

Full sick and isolation pay at Elis Laundry

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

In a public health crisis all workers should ensure they can be safe. No one should be forced into a dangerous situation due to poverty or financial detriment as they could put themselves and others at greater risk.

It is a vital that all workers in the workplace whether directly-employed or outsourced and regardless of contractual status, are guaranteed full pay from day one of any self-isolation or sickness absence. Without these measures, the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus will be quicker and therefore far more deadly.

Elis Laundry are contracted to launder for the NHS, we must ensure they have the strongest possible health and safety arrangements.

For Elis Laundry Staff to be safe they must:

- be guaranteed full pay from day one of any self-isolation due to symptoms, medically recommended isolation or sickness absence
- get more frequent breaks for hand-washing and adequate supplies of soap, water and any necessary PPE.

We call on the government to ensure all NHS contractors follow these basic public health precautions
I know people who work here. Doing laundry for the NHS is risky right now.

This has just been launched. Please sign to support them and pass on :)

Very Sad News today folks,

Maurice Drewitt passed away at the age of 83 this morning, he died from Cancer.

He was a gentleman, and all round decent bloke, deepest sympathy to his family circle and I know everyone on here will send their condolence's.

19/20 ST Corona Refund?

Let's be honest the season is over, we will be in lockdown long past the close of the season and with 4 more home games, Burnley, Chelsea, ManU, Tottenham how is the club going to refund us? Each adult ST equates to around £30 a seat. 4*£30 = £120 refund per adult ST.

Your NHS needs you! Join our team today.

NHS Volunteer Responders has been set up to support the NHS during the COVID-19 outbreak. To do this we need an 'army' of volunteers who can support the 1.5m people in England who are at most risk from the virus to stay well. Our doctors, nurses and other professionals will be able to refer people in to NHS Volunteer Responders and be confident that they have been matched with a reliable, named volunteer.

You can help by signing up for one or more of the tasks listed below. Once you have registered and checks are complete you will be provided a log-in to the GoodSAM Responder app. Switch the app to 'on duty', and you'll see live and local volunteer tasks to pick from nearby.

This programme enables volunteers to provide care or to help a vulnerable person, which is permitted under the new rules announced by the Government on 23rd March 2020. Volunteers may be asked to show the active task they are responding to if asked.

Your NHS needs you! Join our team today.

Volunteers must be 18 or over, and fit and well with no symptoms. Those in higher-risk groups (including those over 70, those who are pregnant or with underlying medical conditions) will be able to offer support by telephone.

Your safety is our priority. The majority of tasks can be undertaken while social distancing and volunteers will receive guidance through our 'getting started pack'. If you do become ill you can pause your volunteering.

Patient transport drivers will require an enhanced DBS check and will receive guidance to do this role safely, also included within the 'getting started pack'.

Succumbed to C-19 in Paris aged 86, truly a spiritual and physical giant of African music.

If you get a chance, have a listen to his 1985 album Electric Africa...jazz, funk and Afrobeats blended perfectly.

Best team ever how many games played?

Interesting article on the beeb today about the legendary teams, who in fact, never or rarely played together.

For me our best ever team, not individuals, but first XI was the 90/91 below

Martyn
Humphrey
Shaw
Gray
Young
Thorn
Salako
Thomas
Wright
Bright
McGoldrick

But how many games did that eleven start? Pardew and Barber occasionally played as did Gary Thompson and Glyn Hodges.

Corona work, furlough and business

Thought it might be helpful to have a side thread, a mutation in current parlance, on the effects of corona on work and business.

Hopefully it will mainly be practical advice and interesting observation, about rates, furloughing, employment rights, rents, server issues etc.

I am due to pay a quarter's rate in advance today, I note the boss of Burger King announced this morning he will be paying no rent.

Lockdown with no internet or tv what would you do ?

Lockdown with no internet or tv what would you do ?

Club initiative

Just had a phone call from one of the ladies in the CPFC Press Office, asking whether there’s anything the club can do to help me in the current situation. I am in the over 70 category, but luckily in reasonable health and fitness, so I declined with thanks. Not sure the extent to which the club can give much practicable help, but though it was a nice gesture. Anyone else had similar calls?

(I’ve assumed it was genuine and it certainly sounded it.)

Sky Sports is now free

Not sure if this is general knowledge yet but Sky have enabled customers to pause sky sports and still have access to all the channels.

Just use your App or go online to pause. Saves me about £25 a month.

When there is more live sport available they will revert.

Games for the lockdown.

With a lockdown looking more and more likely, now is the time to expand your games library.

First up Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. An excellent 30 hour campaign, great combat and some (fairly easy) puzzles to solve along the way. Think Uncharted meets Star Wars.

Ethernet card problem

Got a problem on a PC which has Windows 10 and Kubuntu installed. The ethernet card always works perfectly in Linux but goes through random spells of saying that the cable is disconnected in Windows.

I updated the driver in Windows and it worked for a while. I then wiped the Windows partition and reinstalled from scratch. All through the installation and afterwards the ethernet card worked without a hitch. Next day it was back to cable disconnected. Linux still working fine.

I've googled but all I get is people talking about the reverse situation - works in Windows but not Linux. Anyone seen this before and fixed it? Cheers.

Maths GCSE

Any mathematicians out there? Or maths teachers?

I’ve decided that the only way I can help my 13 year old lad to pass his Maths GCSE is to take it myself. I haven’t got a scooby what’s involved but I know he’s struggling with it and his teachers are not predicting success.

I took my O level in 1984 (a year early ... it’s a long story) so I was 15 and I achieved a grade C so it’s been 36 years since I even thought about it.

Any suggestions as to the best way to do this? Online? Evening class? Text book? I don’t want to smother the lad, but I’d like to be able to help him with it. He’s even listened to the suggestion and hasn’t had a melt down which is a positive.:p

Any tips, hints or ideas gratefully received.

Football Manager Game??

Thought you lot would be the best people to ask.

Me and my mates want to start an online football manager game but we don't want to go through the effort of re-learning the newer FM games as they're too in depth for what we're looking for. We were thinking about going back to FM13 or FM14 but some of us don't have them.

Are there any free places to download? Can anyone recommend another manager game that will keep us occupied for a few hours at a time but nothing too in depth?

Practical help and questions for Coronavirus

Thought it might help to have a thread just for practical help and questions around that.

So I have one. My parents have dogs. Any idea how they can take them out safely now parks and other places previously almost empty are filling with people?

Also if you aren’t in a vulnerable group and you are both self isolating is it ok to go and see each other if you don’t have symptoms if you drive?

The science behind the uks approach to covid 19

samedi 21 mars 2020

The healthy get infected and over the course of the months ahead they create immunity and in this time the vulnerable have been isolating so on the next outbreak which always follows the vulnerable will not get infected as the herd has created the immunity

This is the governments approach to which i can understand but why have they not ordered any vulnerable and old people into total lockdown for 3 months whilst we all carry on doing the above ?

Are the Players Still Being Paid?

Sorry to be the one to ask this question, but the elephant in the room needs to be addressed.

Let's face it, they'll be no more football this year, and one or other of this or next season will surely be dropped. I'm quite convinced of this. Players commit to years, not seasons, and whether it's this season that gets jettisoned or the next one, they will want their money. I don't expect the government's 80% security on wages to cover premiership footballers, so what exactly is plan B? We all know that plan A is to fulfil this and next season, but we also know that this ain't gonna happen.

There needs to be some sort of arbitration, people need to be sitting down and thrashing out a compromise. There's a lot of talk about the premiership subsidising the lower leagues who are more reliant on gate receipts. That's going to add more strain on premiership clubs for whom most of their income goes straight onto players' wages.

Players' wages is central to the short-term survival of the game. It needs to be put onto the agenda.

Name, Shame or Praise

Having read multiple stories of good and bad human nature during the pandemic I figured we should record it. I'll start with a good one, Gary Neville's offer of his hotel to NHS staff.

I praise Gary for this, though it is tough to praise Giggs

Doom Eternal is out now. 27 years after the original DOOM. It looks pretty brilliant and is getting good reviews.

When I get a chance I'm going to grab it off Steam have a bit of a frag-fest during this lock down!

Soundbar

Hi, I’m looking for some recommendation for a soundbar for a decent sized living room/kitchen/diner.

Looking for something powerful enough to fill the room but also able to connect my phone for steaming music and if I can connect my amazon devise all the better.

Would like a sub as well, but I don’t need it as a priority.

I like the look of the Sonos beam but was unsure if it has the stopping power as the sub add on is very expensive.

Suggestions please.

People you know with (almost) famous names...

As a spillover from the Kenny Rogers thread where Pawel Lis used to work with both Kenny Rogers & Tom Jones, which people-with-famous-names do you know?

I actually prefer almost famous names. Anyone used to work with a Brian Giggs or a Paula Gascoigne?

There was a fella at our place called Arron Shearer....

Oh & if a Mod could kindly move the brackets in the thread title so they’re just around ‘almost’ not ‘almost famous’, that would be grand.

The Chain

I thought maybe by stealing the Radcliffe and Maconie game (and every other radio show tbf) it could add a bit of light entertainment while so many of us are at home. It could also fall flat on my face, or even have been done before on here, but hell, no harm in trying.

Embed a link to the previous video any way you like. It could be the same artist featuring (as a guest only), theme, engineer, filming location, recording studio and so on, and so forth.

I decided not to go with the most obvious, but still nod to the source material. Here goes, nice and easy to start with...

Admin I Vs Admin II

Discuss the two on here. Which one was more fun, which was more perilous?

I was too young to really understand Admin I. I don't really remember us being in serious danger of relegation, but equally, it seemed a more worrying time than Admin II purely for how long it went on for. My main memory was going to a game and asking my dad who Danny Boxall was.

Admin II is pretty clear in my mind, and I still think the biggest what if in the club's history is 'What if we lost at Hillsborough that day?' Closely followed by 'What if Danny Higginbotham didn't score against us for Southampton in 2005?' :( We were actually a pretty decent team - good goalie, reliable defence underpinned by players like Clint Hill, a combative midfield, and a decent attack with the wonderful Darren Ambrose scoring for fun.

I reckon if what is happening today had happened 10 or 20 years ago, the team we support now wouldn't exist as we know it.

*This thread isn't welcome to anyone who happily looks past Stern John's goals at Watford and Derby away, but still drones on about his miss at Hillsborough.

Kenny Rogers Dead.

He knew when to fold 'em.
RIP.

Coronavirus - shopping help and support thread

vendredi 20 mars 2020

CP-RJW's kind gesture in another thread offering to help another BBS member with shopping made me think maybe it's time to have an official thread on here for people to offer their assistance to other members and for people to ask for help if needed.

I will be back in the Sutton, Carshalton, Wallington area hopefully from the beginning of April so if anybody is in need of help over the next few months in the area I am happy to help if I can.

Wasn't really sure of the best way to do this but I guess getting a thread started and seeing where it goes from there may be the best way. Let's look out for each other like a proper Palace family :p

Music documentaries and films

Please recommend the best ones as we may be staying home for a while...

For me I love:

Quadrophenia and Tommy
The Wall
The Beatles films (might rewatch with the kids)
Various pink floyd documentaries
Supersonic
Bohemian Rhapsody & Rocketman were ok

Sure I've forgotten loads.

Andros vs Maupay hopefully, I'd watch this streamed if it happens

Quote:

Premier League players join charity FIFA 20 tournament

With no matches taking place on pitches at the moment due to the coronavirus outbreak, Luke wanted to keep English clubs playing together, and raise some money at the same time.

But his request for entrants went viral and he's now got 128 teams from around the world involved.

"We've seen the likes of Crystal Palace putting Andros Townsend forward and Brighton putting Neal Maupay up," the 27-year-old tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

"There's also a whole host of English clubs letting their players take control so it will be good fun."

For ROB

jeudi 19 mars 2020

I am sorry if this is a repeat but cannot find my earlier post

This is a question for Ruskin Old Boy.

Did you know Marv Hinton and Vic Bivand?

I played with them on many occasions and it would be good to hear from those that knew them .

When I knew them they were both living in South Norwood off Portland Road

Thoughts

My son's girlfriend has just produced the attached. I have suggested she should consider doing the same for the whole squad, and getting prints done
I am just sounding out if you think these would be a seller? If so, what price do people considfer that they would pay? Sensible replies would be appreciated as she has just graduated and is struggling to find work
Vicente has already seen this and loves it (we will give him the original if and when we play at Selhurst this season)
Perhaps SP would like one of him, any thoughts?
Many thanks

Resources for teaching kids at home?

Also activities/games easy to do at home :)

Failing that mail order Valium and whiskey shops would be appreciated.

Palace Games/Goals to Watch on Online during isolation

I'm currently re watching Palace v Brighton on my Tivo as I work from home. Got a few match of the days and stored but going to run out. I thought it might be good to start a thread where people can share links to palace games and goals to help ease any Palace withdrawal symptoms.

Your Palace team for the 20-21 season

mercredi 18 mars 2020

If you were taking over as manager of Palace manager for next season what transfers in and outs would you be looking for.
The rules of this are :
You can only sign players up to the value of £40 million, our limit
You can only sign players that would come to Palace ie no Messi
You must of course balance the squad and balance the books

Working from home

mardi 17 mars 2020

I'm now working from home for the first time.

Many other people are now in the same situation.

What are people's views on working from home? Pros cons.
Is this going to be society's way of working in the future?

My initial reaction is I hate it. I prefer to seperate home/work life. Now I can work 24/7 and it feels like my employer has more of a hold on me. It's also very hard to concentrate on work at home.

4G trial starts on the tube.

4G is available on the Jubilee line from Canning Town to Westminster even in the tunnels as part of the possible roll-out to all tube lines.

Deep tube lines the last bastion of sitting in silence? Mind you the southern tube part of the Jubilee must be the noisiest on the system so I'm not sure if anyone would be heard using their phone?

The pros and cons of stopping the season now

Liverpool will have the title snatched from them = Pro
Watford West Ham or Brighton wont get relegated = Con
Leeds wont get promoted AGAIN = Pro
Fulham wont break Leeds hearts by nicking the auto promotion slot when Leeds go into their inevitable free fall = Con

Will England go into lock down

Will we or wont we ? and if we do when do you think we will ?

Losing a parent.

A couple of hours after the Brighton away game, my Mum passed away and it’s really hit me for six. She had a terminal illness but somehow doesn’t make it any easier to take. She was 69.

It’s her funeral tomorrow and I’m dreading it and of course the eulogy that I’ve written. Has anyone with done a eulogy for a parent at a funeral and can recommend any words of advice?

Of course the Coronavirus is having a dreadful affect on the proceedings tomorrow as so many are scared of picking it up from someone so the attendees are dropping like flies.

My Mum met my Dad at an away game in 1972 on a club coach away to Everton and without the meet, clearly I would not be here or on the BBS. I’ve not posted since her passing as seems somehow seemed unimportant.

Will they run out of money

With no match days plus player wages taking such a large part of turnover do you think any big clubs will go to the wall? Spurs Southampton first?

RIP Peter Whittingham

Shocking news if rumours are true, only 35. Great player for Cardiff.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day!

I’m sitting at home with a can of Guinness about to start playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. It’s what St. Patrick would have wanted

Bit of Coronavirus Football Fun

We might all have a bit of time on our hands so how about we put the football world to rights. With Euro2020 delayed, how to get football back on schedule? What do you think?

It's a bit of fun but anyone agreeing with Karren Brady that season 2019/20 should be made null & void will be negged.

Now that this summer is free, let's assume we can restart football in Mid May (Optimistic).

I reckon we should then just scrap the two current European tournaments. Sorry for those involved but they are the collateral damage of this global crisis.

Then in mid May we have a seven week Summery blast of football to finish off all the domestic leagues. Finishing mid July.

Then a briefish Summer break before the 2020/21 season starts on the first weekend of September. With no League Cup and the scrapping of the Nations League we should be able to conclude the season Mid May as normal. Then it's the Euros. Delay the Women's Euros until Summer of 2022 because the WC that year is not until the Autumn.

It almost seems too easy.

What have I forgotten/ignored?

Mini tourno to complete season - pick your Palace 5-a-side

In the unlikely event that the Premier Season is completed over a weekend of 5 a sides, we need the best team.

SCHLUPP
AYEW

SUBS
TOWNSEND, MEYER, McARTHUR

Recommend a distraction for self-isolation

We're in for a long few months, and watching the news all day will drive us crazy.

I know we have separate recommendation threads already but, given the circumstances, I'd love some other self-isolation suggestions on how we can distract, immerse and inspire ourselves. Especially for parents needing to keep their kids entertained (not a parent myself) and to keep their own sanity in these trying times.

Here's a few to start - would love your ideas.

Podcasts

Athletico Mince
You're insane if you haven't listened to this yet. Ignore the first few episodes, start from around episode 10 and you'll have hours of beautifully crafted yet ramshackle absurdity from Bob Mortimer. They've also just done a few compilation episodes to ease you in. Warhammer!
To view the link you have to Register or Login

Rule of Three
From the two comedy writers who made the Paddington films funny, and lots of other amazing stuff, they sit down and pick apart some of the greatest ever comedies. Python, Young Ones, Fawlty Towers. But they also highlight a lot of lesser-known genius like Ivor Cutler and Gerrard Hoffnung.
To view the link you have to Register or Login

Gossipmongers
Comedians inc. professional weirdo Joe Wilkinson read out listeners' dubious rumours, gossip and tittle-tattle from their local area. The whole thing is strung together with a soundtrack reminiscent of Chris Morris's Blue Jam. Welly baby.
To view the link you have to Register or Login

The Beef & Dairy Network Podcast
This is more of a scripted radioplay than a podcast, so start from episode one to enter a bizarre world in which everybody is obsessed with beef. It's funny, subtle and clever; the songs are great too. The psychopathic 'freelance' butcher Eli Roberts will stay with you forever.

TV

The Last Kingdom
Loads of people seem to have missed this. Fans of stuff like LOTR, GOT and The Witcher will love it. Similar to Vikings, but rooted in the historical novels of Bernard Cromwell so it feels a lot more real. Four seasons of blood, violence and sex on Netflix.
To view the link you have to Register or Login

Gotham
Again, loads of people missed this. It tracks back to Bruce Wayne as a teenager, before he's Batman, with Jim Gordon as the main hero, so you get the origin stories of the Joker, the Penguin and loads more. Tonally it's a blend of the camp TV show and the darker Nolan movies. A bit silly but solidly entertaining and there's five seasons.

This County
I missed this the first time round, but it's so funny. It follows the lives of two isolated reprobates in a Cotswold village. Third series is playing on BBC now and the rest is on iPlayer.

Art

A thing I used to do with my younger cousins, and back when I was a teacher: Get a load of crayons, felt tips and cheap paper. Put one of their favourite shows or movies on and pause it at a particularly scene - any scene really - and ask them to draw what they see.

For the first screengrab, you've got 10 minutes. Then 5 minutes. Then 2 minutes. Then 30 seconds.

It's a good way to teach them how to make mistakes, how to work under pressure, and how to appreciate the media they consume a bit more consciously. And at the end, you have loads of cool/bizarre drawings to pin up round the house.

Think of it like life drawing, without all the nakedness.

Roy Hudd Dead.

Met him at Selhurst a couple of times. Lovely man.

RIP fellow Palace fan.

Trialist: Crystal Palace linked to 17-year-old Sam Oguntayo

CRYSTAL PALACE are leading Manchester City in the race for non-League sensation Samuel Oguntayo.

SunSport understands the Eagles sent scouts to watch the versatile wideman in action for semi-professional side Kingstonian in their 4-2 defeat to Cheshunt on Wednesday. The Premier League champions also had people in attendance to run the rule over the 17-year-old, who only made his league debut back in January.
But Oguntayo has now accepted an offer to train with Palace's Under-23s next week at their Copers Cope Road base. The pacy teen, who has been likened to City ace Benjamin Mendy, can operate both at left-back and right-wing and has also attracted interest from Watford and Leeds United.

Would sky show every game behind closed doors ?

So if the premier league make the decision to play the remainder of the season behind closed doors would sky screen every game via the sky tv platform ?

Or would the premier league make the premier league pass available in the uk and sky just carry on as normal ?

Or would the premier league do an emergency £20 billion pound deal with amazon prime :D

Impact of Coronavirus on football

I know there are more serious things to contemplate regarding this virus, but you can’t help but wonder if the game is as expected, suspended for a long period, how many clubs will hit real financial problems?

EFL clubs especially, will miss the match day revenue life blood and yet wages and a host of other things will still need to be paid. If it goes on till into next season I would think Prem clubs will feel the squeeze too. Is all the TV money for Prem clubs paid before the season or does it depend on fixtures being actually played?

Could all get very messy.

Industries that will boom in a Pandemic

Serious question (obviously jokes are good too) what industries will actually boom in this current pandemic?

Im just interested to see what other people think, as this is a very unusual time and for example in the great depression, cinema tickets rose as people actually want escapism and enjoyment at value. More a societal question than a business question I guess Im asking.

Obviously if you own a bogroll factory or cleaning products but Im thinking more about how people get entertainment, hobbies, exercise and food whether these industries will boom in niche areas. For example streaming services.

Your favourite Palace win in the PL?

Still missing Yohan ... class player.

Speculation: Batshuayi

So the papers are saying the transfer cost would be £45m ! That amounts to roughly the funds we would get from Zaha transfer, with the 20 or 25% to Manure. So all in all it would be a straight swap - one player out and one player in, the difference being Batshuayi is a year younger than wilf. Worth considering?

Suggested Team and Formation For: Bournemouth

Obviously there’s a chance it may not even go ahead. But let’s play just in case!

Guaita
Ward - Dann - Cahill - PVA
Kouyate - McCarthy - McArthur
Ayew - Benteke - Zaha

Hennessey, Tomkins, Kelly, Milivojevic, Riedewald, Schlupp, Townsend

Leaves Sakho and Meyer completely out. We’ve got many options now

Are you personally worried about catching this Corona Virus?

mercredi 11 mars 2020

Well, it looks like some of us will definitely catch this bug. Just wondered what peoples personal attitudes are to this. Obviously the younger and fitter ones will probably be mostly positive about the prospect.. People like myself who hardly ever get Ill, but in our early autumn years might be slightly unsure. Whereas others who unfortunately have underlying conditions may well be very apprehensive.

I'm posting a poll including options on finance as to whether people are more worried about the financial implications out of all of this.

Interesting, unprecedented concerning territory..... So lets see how do we feel?

Parking Charge Notice (PCN) fine advice

Just got a "PCN" through the post for my daughter who appears to have parked somewhere private, used one of the premises as a customer and failed to punch her registration (or may have done not sure yet) into the machine apparently provided. I'll get the full details.

Anyway, it's a private company which masquarades as 'civil' official service, Civil Enforcement Ltd To view the link you have to Register or Login, and they are giving 14 days to pay for £60 or it goes to £100 to 28 days and after that "may" go to a debt collectors.

Chromecast Ultra

From Gizmodo:

The latest info on Google’s next streaming dongle comes via 9to5Google who spoke to a reliable source about an upcoming device codenamed “Sabrina.” In terms of design, Sabrina is said to feature a hockey puck-shaped body with rounded edges similar to the current Chromecast Ultra, while featuring support for 4K HDR streaming video, Bluetooth, wifi, and built-in Chromecast functionality.

However, instead of the standard Chromecast UI, Sabrina is said to be powered by Android TV. That means users should get full compatibility for the more than 5,000 Android TV apps available today including those from major streaming video services such as Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, CBS All Access, and more.

If true, not only would Sabrina be the first homegrown Android TV device (aside from a few prototypes and dev kits), this would also be a major shift for Google’s Android TV strategy, which up until now has largely relied on partners and third-parties to create hardware-based on Android TV like the Nvidia Shield TV and Xiaomi Mi Box S 4K.

More recently, cable providers have started leveraging Android TV in devices like the AT&T TV box in the US, which combines a streaming video box with a traditional cable box. By relying on Android TV, it frees cable providers from having to spend as much time creating and managing a UI and OS (which frankly, cable companies are usually quite bad at), while also giving users a more familiar app-based video device.

Another important change for Google’s upcoming streaming device is that the source says it will come with its own remote that features a built-in microphone for summoning the Google Assistant, and that it will be possible to program the remote to work directly with people’s existing TVs.

While the source did not provide any info on expected pricing and availability, the source did say that Google’s upcoming Android TV device is designed to fill a gap in the market while serving as “a mass-consumer dongle that runs full-fledged Android TV.”

That means we’re probably looking at a device that’s priced between current Chromecast devices which top out at £70 for the Chromecast Ultra and premium Android TV boxes like the Nvidia Shield TV which starts at £150 for the standard model.

Discussion: Players from the relegated sides

mardi 10 mars 2020

I’ll leave out the likes of Grealish, Rice and Cantwell, since they’re presumably unattainable.

Norwich: Buendia, Lewis, Aarons, maayybe Pukki

Villa: McGinn, Mings, Wesley, Nakamba

Bournemouth: Wilson, King, Ake, Ramsdale, Fraser, Brooks

Watford: Sarr, Doucoure, Hughes

West Ham: Anderson, Bowen, Haller, Fornals, Diop

Brighton: Mooy, Maupay, Trossard

Anyone tickle your fancy?

Have a great day Tak.

Happy birthday Tariq. Kiss from Mitch.

Music Palace have run out to

lundi 9 mars 2020

Hi everyone,

I hope this okay to post here, moderators please move or delete if necessary.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris
Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine
articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and
replica shirts.

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have
run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We realise that 'Glad All Over' has been the anthem of choice for a number of seasons since it was first released in 1963.

However, I wondered if any fans know of any instances when either of these were replaced by another track? Any stories/memories to go along with this are much appreciated.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song
that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the
tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any
questions, please let us know!* We would be very happy to discuss the
project.

Thanks for your time,

Joe Headland

50 points +

Getting 50 points or more this season would be a new Palace record since promotion, although final position is probably more important (achievement in sport is relative).

Total Premier League points and final positions since promotion:

2013-14: 45 points / 11th
2014-15: 48 points / 10th
2015-16: 42 points / 15th
2016-17: 41 points / 14th
2017-18: 44 points / 11th
2018-19: 49 points / 12th

Total global economic meltdown

I’m old enough to remember when a total global economic meltdown would have been big news and at least worthy of a thread on the BBS

I suppose nowadays we have pandemics, never ending Brexit negotiations and a Christian Benteke goal drought* to talk about

*yes, he has played well in past three games

Hopes and dreams for the rest of the season

We don't get relegated, we are Palace after all
We finish above Everton, after their last season shenanigans.
We finish above Arsenal, the thought of watching the explosion on Arse TV
We finish above the Scummers, nuff said
We sneak a European slot any European slot. THIS is the dream maybe, just maybe one day.
West Ham, Watford and Brighton go down
If not any two of the three
If not at least Watford please.

Any of the above would make me happy.

Happy birthday MrGins.

Have a good day Ray.:p

It's been fairly clear cut that Palace are the biggest team in England to never win a major trophy. The only possible candidates to challenge for this dubious honour are Watford but other than their best ever finish (2nd) being higher than ours (3rd) I think it's fair to say we're a bigger club than them.

Hull are a also a shout but given their lack of top flight appearance for over 100 years, it's hard to argue they're bigger than Palace.

Given Watford had a season in the UEFA Cup following that 1983 2nd place finish, it leaves us with the double distinction of zero trophies and no recognised UEFA appearances (Intertoto not recognised as full UEFA competition as it was simply a qualification tournament to reach the UEFA Cup.

As English football is generally regarded as one of the top 3-4 leagues in the world, does being the biggest team in England to never win a trophy or qualify for Europe by default make us the biggest team in the world to neither play in their continental competition or win a trophy.

I don't know every team in every league (might a Brazilian or Chinese teams I'm unaware of,) so by all means throw in your suggestions.

Fan Pictures and Videos from: Favourite Palace Moments? 🎥

Hello all,

The purpose of this thread is to feature the best moments from the past and present of the team.

I was wondering if any of you could reply to this thread with your favourite moments. If you have a link to a video then it would be greatly appreciated but if you do not then it is no problem, please just write the moments. I hope that this thread brings back nostalgia to some of you who may have forgotten the best moments from the past.

I like to spend my free time uncovering hidden videos online of football moments, not only from television angles but also from unseen perspectives recorded from the stands.

I hope that I can give you some great memories!

I will be back regularly to post great media content that you will like.

Thanks for your time!

Parents in a Nursing/Care Home

Bit of a personal one. A few years back my mother in law (now 94) needed to move into a care home.

She and we did the right thing. We sold her house. She got a big old lump of cash for that. Best part of half a million. No sense crying over a spilt inheritance.

Anyway, she is now down to her last £100k. Costs are around £5k a month. So by Christmas 2021 there will be nothing left. What happens then? Do we have to do battle with the authorities to pay her fees? Will the government just step up? Or will they insist she moves somewhere cheaper? (If it's the latter I'll be mightily irked)

Car Maintenance Question

I have a VW Up that is coming up to 5 years old.

A VW dealer has emailed me stating that it is time for a cambelt change even though the car has done only about 18,000 miles.

Can anyone who knows more about these things than I do confirm that this work is advisable now despite the low mileage, what are the consequences of not having it done and is £495 a reasonable price.

Thanks

The tech got a reboot from an external OS drive but couldn’t do anything with the main drive as it was “locked” He overwrote the main drive with an new OS and it works but found the back up had stopped photos being backed up since 2014 ! I am gutted is there anyway I can get them back ? Anyway at all ?

Best team in the world?

Anyone have a link to that website which records the best team in the world based on whoever beats the number 1 side? Can't remember the name...

The one where Liverpool may have been number 1, Watford beat them and took the title, now we beat Watford...

Player Ratings And Reviews: Crystal Palace 1 v Watford 0

Deep Rock Galactic

Solo or up to 4 player co-op. In bug-infested fully deformable cavern complexes. With shotguns, assault rifles, zipline guns, power drills, flamethrowers, grendades, robotic ore hoppers and lots of beards. Craftable beer on the between-mission mothership.

The gunplay is great and you can pick your own difficulty balance with each mission.

I think it's still on Steam sale - it's perhaps the most shooter fun I've had in quite a while and I'd recommend it for the price of less than 3 pints (closer to 5 pints when it stops being on sale).

Enjoy.

2020-21 Nations League

Draw being held tonight in Amsterdam (5pm)

Format Changes:

The top three divisions will now all consist of 4 teams except for Division D where one will have three sides.

No World Cup 2022 spots will be gained via the Nations League but, two of the three UEFA Coefficient World Cup play-off spots can be obtained via the competition. The best two Nations League group winners who do not qualify for the World Cup or play-offs through normal qualifying will go into the 12-team World Cup play-offs in March 2022.

The previous relegation spots have been wiped because of the team size change mentioned above. But, will be in effect for this competition. Relegation is possible from Groups A, B & C. Promotion is possible from Groups B, C & D.

How The Draw Works:

Leagues A, B & C will be split into four pots of four nations, with one representative from each of the pot forming the group. League D does not follow the same format because it only has 7 nations, four in Pot A and three in Pot B.

League A

Pot 1: Portugal, Netherlands, England, Switzerland

Pot 2: Belgium, France, Spain, Italy

Pot 3: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden

Pot 4: Croatia, Poland, Germany, Iceland

League B

Pot 1: Russia, Austria, Wales, Czech Republic

Pot 2: Scotland, Norway, Serbia, Finland

Pot 3: Slovakia, Turkey, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland

Pot 4: Bulgaria, Israel, Hungary, Romania

League C

Pot 1: Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Georgia

Pot 2: North Macedonia, Kosovo, Belarus, Cyprus

Pot 3: Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania, Luxembourg

Pot 4: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova

League D

Pot 1: Gibraltar, Faroe Islands, Latvia, Liechtenstein

Pot 2: Andorra, Malta, San Marino

When the matches will take place:

There'll be no Premier League Football on the following weekends next season, so, book your Holidays now:

Matchday 1: 3-5 September 2020
Matchday 2: 6-8 September 2020

No Premier League football on the weekend of 5th / 6th September

Matchday 3: 8-10 October 2020
Matchday 4: 11-13 October 2020

No Premier League football on the weekend of 10th / 11th October

Matchday 5: 12-14 November 2020
Matchday 6: 15-17 November 2020

No Premier League football on the weekend of 14th / 15th November

Finals: 2, 3, 6 June 2021

League C relegation and World Cup 2022 play-offs: 24, 25, 28, 29 March 2022*

*in the unlikely event one of the teams who finish bottom in a League C group also qualify for the World Cup play-offs, the relegation play-offs will be cancelled and the two teams with the fewest points relegated instead

Football writing

Afternoon all, apologies first of all if this is in the wrong forum/thread! Please do move it accordingly!

The reason I am posting is because I am looking to do some football writing for a platform/website that could have me. I love football and love CPFC (this comes back to bite me sometimes, nevertheless we all love the emotional rollercoaster!)

I have a day job but would like to keep busy in the evenings, a few nights a week I’d love to write about a sport and a team that I adore. I would of course write for free on multiple areas that I have in mind.

If anyone can help me out, give me some advice or point me in any directions then I’d love to hear from you.

Thank you
Alex

Suggestion: Sturridge on very short term deal?

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Sturridge has just had his contract cancelled by mutual consent and is now a free agent. As we haven't named a full 25 is it worth offering him a deal until the end of the season? If he performs well, offer him a longer contract in the summer?

Relegation is highly unlikely this year.

Here is the latest relegation chances as calculated by European Club Index:

Simon Gleave - head of analysis at Gracenote Sports- says that Palace's prospects of relegation are down to 0.16% following the win v Brighton on Saturday.

He explains that one of the keys to this is that there are a lot of teams between Palace and the relegation places. This reduces probabilities quite a bit as it requires too many clubs to perform much better than they have been to date in order to overtake Palace.

Discussing how many points will be needed this year to avoid relegation, he argues that it will be below 40 - he continues:

The reason why it is unlikely to be higher [than 39] is that it would require at least four teams - all of a sudden - to perform better than they have done so far this season. We can look at the last 10 matches of each team to get an idea of their form:

Norwich - 9 points
Aston Villa - 10 points
Bournemouth - 8 points
Watford - 15 points
West Ham - 8 points
Brighton - 8 points

So, the only one of these teams which has scored more than a point per match over the previous 10 matches is Watford, but four will need to exceed this average in the final 10 matches in order to make 40 points insufficient for staying up. Here are the teams just above them for comparison:

Newcastle - 7 points (repeat this and they stay under 40)
Southampton - 16 points
Crystal Palace - 13 points
Everton - 18 points
Arsenal - 15 points
Burnley - 14 points

Form over 10 matches can vary of course for a few clubs but not usually for the whole bunch at once. Looking at these figures, we can probably conclude that Watford are the most likely to survive the relegation battle and if an outsider is to be sucked in, that would be Newcastle. It is also pretty obvious from these figures that the teams in group 1 are generally worse than those in group 2, just as the table says they are.

Our Euro Club Index (which is calculated over a longer term than just the last 10 matches or this season) says that the worst six teams in the Premier League are Norwich, Brighton, Bournemouth, Villa, Watford and West Ham - sound familiar?

Cheers,

Simon

Calling Brighton, your relegation is ready.

dimanche 1 mars 2020

Not much would be funnier than watching the Champions League winners of 2021 get relegated before they got anywhere near the Champions League. With their massive debt they really are ****ed, so I want to maximise the amusement with this little run-in calculator.

I would miss them though, because I think they would hit financial trouble fast and sink like Bolton. The past 3 years has been fun with all the stupid weeds on here, but it can't go on forever.

So here it is, I reckon 38 ought to be enough.
