Peter Jackson to direct new Let it Be documentary

Been waiting for this re make for 30 odd years.

55 hours of footage at Jackson’s disposal of The Beatles recording their penultimate album and of course, ending with the roof top performance.

If his treatment of the World War 1 footage is anything to go by, it will be an amazing watch. Relations between the fabs wasn’t at its best by that time, but by all accounts, the sessions were not as fractious as the original movie may have led you to believe.

Have seen quite a few dodgy pirated clips over the years (plus hours of audio) and know there’s some great stuff that didn’t make the original film. Peter Sellers making an impromptu visit to the studio being one of them.

Jan - May 2019 Champions League Winner:
Jan - May 2019 UEFA Cup winner:
Aug - Dec 2019 Champions League Winner:
Aug - Dec 2019 UEFA Cup Winner: Louis:

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Suggestion: Lucas Alario

I know we probably won't sign anyone, but I see Cardiff are already trying to get Lucas Alario for £14m, seriously good finisher, usually a main front man, but has been utilised on the wing and behind Volland a few times by Bayer Leverkusen. This is the sort of decent player we should be looking at, and not letting a direct rival snaffle up.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Fulham at Home

This is the team we'll probably see:

Guiata
AWB - Sakho - Tomkins - PVA
McArthur - Luka - Kouyate
Townsend - Ayew - Schlupp

Assuming Kouyate and Tomkins aren't injured...

Hopefully Benteke/Wickham and Meyer start, and Kouyate isn't taken off after 70 minutes when he's dominating the game.

Roy please go in the summer poll.

Terrible management from him this year .... He needs to go in the summer!

New issue of FYP Fanzine available to buy this Saturday vs Fulham

Like Connor Wickham the FYP Fanzine has been away for a while but also like Connor Wickham we are back!

It's been over a year since our last issue but after making some changes behind the scenes we have returned with our latest issue which is on sale against Fulham this Saturday (February 2nd, 2019)

And folks, it's a hell on an issue. Packed full of lots of lovely Palace content, this 48-page issue considers:
  • Whether Wilf's time may be up at Palace,
  • Whether Dougie is still a Palace hero
  • Considers the benefits of young players moving abroad to develop their games - think Mandela Egbo.
  • Also inside is a cracking review of our 1989 promotion season written by the founders of the original CPFC fanzine, Eagle Eye.
  • An interview with Dominic Fifield - the media man Palace fans can trust.
  • And the first in a series of columns written by our former manager, Alan Smith.
  • Phew!

It's available for £2 and will be on sale around Selhurst from 1.30pm onwards this Saturday against Fulham.

Please buy a copy if you can.

There will also be an electronic copy available to buy for £1 and download from Sunday for those of you who can't make the game. Keep an eye out here and on our social channels for that.

Cheers!

Just deleted the Puffin browser.

In the early years of watching dodgy feeds on an apple device, it was the only answer. And it worked.

Now it’s completely obsolete.

Suggestion: Burnley Keepers

Hart, Heaton, Pope I think any of them would be at least better than Hennessey and possibly even first choice depending on how Guita does. Maybe worth a bid for one of them in a cash plus Hennessey exchange deal? it's not like they need all three surely ...

Ryan Inniss

You lads are absolute traitors. We give you Speroni, and 15 year later you give us the absolute shambolic defender that is Inniss. One of the worst CH's I've ever seen. Regardless of what you think the level of Scottish football is, this lad doesn't have much hope above junior level.

Hopeless.

Any decent loans you can give us? We're desperate!:sob:

Good week/ bad week

I subscribe to a weekly news magazine which also inserts some oddities. Hope I’m not breaking any copyright laws but I thought I’d pass one or two on.
Feel free to add your goodweek/ bad week items.

Bad week for eels in the Thames. They’ve been found to be hyperactive due to cocaine laced urine coming thru sewage pipes. Scientists estimate 80,000 “lines” are being flushed into the river every day.
Good week for NFL officials who have been offered free eye exams by Louisiana Family Eyecare after officials blew a call in last weeks championship game which cost the New Orleans saints a place in the super bowl.

Truly great albums of this decade

When you think back to the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's, it's easy to reel off a whole list of truly great, classic albums. Even looking back to the first few years of this century, there are a couple that spring to mind.

But at this decade draws close to its end, I can't really think of one record that I can imagine will be seen as a classic in 20 years time.

I'm sure it's just because I'm getting old, so tell me, what are this decades seminal great albums?

Life insurance, mortgage cover/protection

Advice needed please.

I'm (unfortunately) having to remortgage having paid off my last one completely simply because the wife decided to go. I'm taking a repayment mortgage but would like some protection against early death and/or serious illness (depending on costs) so that my house isn't re-possessed should I snuff it too soon and the kids get the whole thing debt free.

I'm 46 (just), non-smoker, pretty damn fit and healthy actually but who knows. 20 year mortgage, hoping to pay it off early.

Any BBS experts in this stuff can offer advice? From early research it seems that the serious illness cover part is actually pretty expensive compared to the early death part. I'd also like the figure to reduce as I make early repayments too, preferably.

I have a £50k death in service payout from my company too, dunno if it's worth factoring that in.

Cheers

VBA in excel - help please

God knows why but excel for Mac 2016 does not have a "use relative references" button.

What I am trying to do is record a macro that deletes the single space in front of some text in a list of data, because I need to pick up data from this worksheet and the stupid space in front as it is ******* up vlookup references.

So for example, I have " Name" in an excel cell and I want to write a Macro that deletes the space and results in "Name" in a cell, and then run that macro on the whole column of data. But because Excel for Mac killed the relative references button, I cannot do this. Which is massively annoying.

I have no idea how to actually code in VBA so I am at a loss.

Any ideas?

What a bunch of melts. They're an average team with a averagish squad yet seem to think they should be in the Europa challenging the top six.

I wasn't a huge fan of BFS football but it was effective and it sort of worked. They've gone for the new sexy and it's blown up in their faces, completely deserved.

Brexit riots cupboard - What would you keep in yours?

I have the traditional revolution hand scythe, that would spruce up nicely. Great for slicing Achilles heel tendons.

Errr. Which one is Achilles?

Squad Value

What are everyones thoughts on our squad value. The inflated market obviously makes this current Palace squad the most expensive / valuable in history, but were the owners to sell all saleable assets what would they get (and yes I know a 'firesale' would command much lower fees.)

Here's my guessing game:

Guiata - £8m
Hennessy - £6m
Speroni - Free

Wan-Bisakka - £35m
Ward - £5m

Kelly - £8m
Dann - £5m
Sakho - £18m
Tomkins - £25m

Van Aanholt - £18m
Souare - £1.5m

Luka - £22m
Meyer - £8m
McArthur - £12m
Kouyate - £12m
Riedewald - £5m
Schlupp - £10m

Townsend - £35m
Zaha - £55m
Sako - £2m

Wickham - £4m
Benteke - £16m
Sorloth - £5m

Brexit Cupboard - Whats in yours?

My wife is regrettably an avid reader of mumsnet (we all have our faults) and has decided we need a Brexit Cupboard when the food runs out (which it probably will when everyone panics and cleans out Tescos To view the link you have to Register or Login)

So under the stairs is now the Brexit cupboard to which I helpfully (my wife didn’t think so) added 6 bottles of a decent claret and one bottle of champagne.

Anyway do you have plans and if so whats going to be in yours?

Death of Bill Ager ex-Palace keeper

A friend contacted me to pass on the news of the death of his uncle Bill Ager. He signed for Palace in 1949 and played for 3 years as an amateur. His parents would not let him sign as a professional, insisting that he studied for a career as a surveyor. The maximum wage was still in place for footballers and as his professional career demanded more of his time he had to give up playing for Palace.

Suggestion: Shinji Kagawa

Apparently Dortmund want 2 -3 Million for him. Not a bad attacking midfielder and not a bad price. He is almost 30 now though...thoughts?

Suggested Team and Formation For: Southampton

Guaita
Wan Bissaka - Tomkins - Sakho - Schlupp
Kouyate - Milivojevic - Meyer
Townsend - Wickham - Zaha

GK, Ward, van Aanholt, McArthur, Sako, Ayew, Benteke

Discussion: Scouting Overhaul Needed

The Premier League is the most successful league in the world, London is the capitol and Crystal Palace are not likely to go down. So out of all the players in the world, how is it that we cannot attract players ? Reason must be our scouting system and the buck stops with Freedman.

Discussion: Fresh ideas

vendredi 25 janvier 2019

Why do we have so few? Tosun, Niasse, Sako. Do we have an actual scouting team who can leave the UK and generate ideas? The BBS is probably better at proposing player signings than our scouting team.

Which band or singer have you listened to most?

Not necessarily who is your favourite band or singer, but who have you listened to most over your lifetime?

I’m going for The Charlatans.

Suggestion: Charlie Austin to leave Southampton

Very surprised they are letting him go at this stage

Had his injuries obviously but a real battler and knows where the goal is

Laptop buzzing when amplified.

I use my laptop a lot for when Im gigging and djing etc. Lately it has developed a very strange buzzing/ interference type noise when plugged into the p.a.

I have checked the leads etc and when I plug in other stuff and other laptops to the p.a. the sound isnt there, so this is definitely the laptop.

I’ve got no time for the reactionary regime in power. But also got no time for what seems like a right wing coup evolving with support from Trump.

Hopefully workers can come together to oppose both.

Suggestion: Alberth Elis

West Brom are looking at signing this guy for £5 million. Is it just me or wouldn't he be the perfect low risk signing? Surely he'd choose us over those bores! Only 22 years old, extremely fast with good scoring boots albeit in the MLS. Looks pretty strong as well. Very direct. All the right attributes are there to be a useful PL player!

No water bill for 4 years

I moved into a new build house about 4 years ago, and in that time I've not had a single water bill. Roughly a year after moving in, I called the water company that were apparently looking after my bills, and they were useless. At first they had the wrong address info, which I corrected. After this they said they would shortly send me a bill. After a few weeks I chased this to be told it would be actioned shortly.

Repeat, repeat, and repeat over the next few months, and I gave up.

1) I'm assuming that interest/a penalty fee can't be added to whatever balance I am to be eventually sent?

2) If this goes past 6 years, am I correct in thinking that I won't legally need to pay anything outside of that period? E.g. if I am sent a bill after 7 years, I'll only need to pay the last 6 years and can discount anything (1 year in this example) before that?

I've got enough money in the bank to cover whatever bill eventually finds me, so I'm not too worried. J
I'm just wondering where I stand when it is eventually sent out.

Pre match entertainment before spurs .

I’ve heard that local band slider will be performing before kick off on Sunday on the holmsdale concourse. They are a covers band who play great tunes from my era . I’ve also heard a big palace fan will be joining them for a few tunes :p

Resident Evil 2.

A great re-make of a great original.

Anyone played it yet and if so, thoughts?

Suggestion: Sven Mislintat

Maybe we should be looking to bring in someone like Sven Mislintat, who is leaving Arsenal this month. Went to there from Dortmund where he did a good job.

Spanish toddler stuck in well

I don't know if anyone else has seen this.

A toddler aged 2 fell down a borehole on Jan 13th near Malaga, Spain. There's been an epic scale operation to rescue the kid, involving drilling a parallel shaft and digging across, as the borehole was too small to excavate safely.

I'm surprised by the lack of media attention this is receiving. Stories like this appear to be arbitrarily picked up on by the media sometimes - I appreciate the Sala disappearance is a huge story - but also remember the operation in Thailand to rescue the youngsters from the cave being global front page news.

The rescue mission to save the boy, Julen, has been beset by problem after problem, and sadly the lad has still not been reached. The latest of this evening is that they hope to begin the final phase of drilling and mining tomorrow morning, which will take a minimum of 24 hours. So the best that can be hoped for is that they will get to him 12 days after he disappeared. It is unknown whether he is alive.

I haven't been able to get this out of my mind all week. Perhaps it's the eyewitness accounts of the boy crying as he fell. Or the search team finding the cup and sweet packet he was clutching halfway down the hole a couple of days later. Or maybe it's because I have a boy of similar age.

This tragedy is compounded as the parents also lost their elder son, who was 3, to a sudden heart attack whilst playing on a beach a few years ago. I can't begin to imagine what they must be going through. They must be utterly inconsolable.

It’ll be weird not seeing Wilf in red and blue. Going to Selhurst will be less exciting but can’t say he’s had a good season to be honest. I just don’t trust the people in charge of transfers to use the money wisely. Don’t want him to leave obviously but would rather he was sold abroad than to Chelsea, Liverpool etc.

I've heard it can be done and although I wouldn't dream of it I am thinking of switching ISP from Plusnet to EE, but I wanted to check if anybody uses EE and if they have any trouble streaming matches that I definitely don't want to do.

How is EE's rep for being a legal media snitch to the authorities?

Where is Martin H?

What has happened to Martin. I think he is/was one of the most insightful posters on here. I used to particularly like his match reports and valued his opinion on almost all things discussed.

Best team since 1985

I know I know this has been done before but....
Obviously with Liverpool everyone's 'favourites' at the moment, people at work have been putting together their best ever Liverpool team in their lifetime.
I put my head into a Palace one from my supporting lifetime (since 1985, so no Sansom, Taylor, Byrne, Jackson etc) and came up with this:

1 Martyn
2 Wan-Bissaka
3 Cole
4 Thomas
5 Warhurst
6 Young
7 Townsend
8 Lombardo
9 Jansen
10 Wright
11 Zaha

Subs: Bright, Bolasie, Moore
Manager: Sir Steve Coppell

Fringes: Curcic, Freedman, Johnson, Cabaye, Salako

Who am I missing from this period?

Film about James Bulger

James Bulger’s mum rightly disgusted that a film about the killers of her son was made and now being nominated for an Oscar.

Apparently the maker of the film didn’t even consult Bulger’s parents before making it. Find that absolutely astonishing.

One thing for a documentary to be made on the subject, but a film just feels like cashing in on someone’s pain and tragedy.

Sick or is the film maker within his rights?

Rare Palace programmes

Over the last few months I've been filling some blanks in my collection of Crystal Palace home programmes.

There are now just 20 home programmes from the 1960/61 season onwards which I haven't got. I was wondering whether anyone confirm whether a) programmes for some of these games exist b) possible sources to get hold of them.

2010/11 - Norwich City (original postponed fixture on Boxing Day)
2007/08 - Everton (Friendly)
1999/00 - Colchester United (League Cup)
1995/96 - Grimsby Town (re-arranged game on 5th March)
1995/96 - Luton Town (re-arranged game on 19th March)
1993/94 - Peterborough United (re-arranged on 1st Feb)
1985/86 - Brighton (Full Members Cup)
1984/85 - Grimsby Town (League)
1979/80 - Chelsea (Friendly)
1976/77 - Portsmouth (original game on Boxing Day)
1974/75 - Watford (League Cup)
1972/73 - Dundee (Friendly)
1972/73 - Lazio (Anglo Italian Cup)
1972/73 - Newcastle (Anglo Italian Cup Semi Final)
1971/72 - Maccabi Nathanya (Friendly)
1970/71 - Arsenal (Friendly, played at the Crystal Palace Sports Centre)
1970/71 - Clyde (Friendly)
1965/66 - Aberdeen (Friendly)
1965/66 - Shamrock (Friendly)
1964/65 - Leicester City (League Cup)

Also if anyone feels there are home programmes from particularly rare games which you feel I might easily have overlooked (e.g. the Football League Trophy games vs Wimbledon and Millwall in 82/83 season) or friendlies, as I'm trying to be sure I have built a comprehensive list.

Pre match build up - Brighton (H) - 9th March 2019.

Only a matter 6/7 weeks away now. Thought I'd have a look at how sales are going but they're not even on sale yet.

Already feeling nervous about this one. Hopefully s similar outcome to last year's home game, albeit not 'that' close. I can still picture Murray with those chances in the second half.

Anyhow, we owe them a good beating and the team owe us a top performance after the complete let down at the Amex a month or so ago.

We Should Compile a Dossier like City of all the Penalties Wilf Didn't Get

City have compiled a dossier of incidents where Raheem Sterling didn't get penalties. We should do the same for Wilf as his list is far longer and throw in red card challenges that didn't result in a red while we're at it.

ETIMAD Man City angry at Sterling treatment from refs and compile dossier after being denied clear penalty vs Huddersfield

MANCHESTER CITY are growing increasingly unhappy at the way referees are judging Raheem Sterling.

And the Premier League champions have already complied a dossier of incidents involving Sterling from the past nine months.

City are concerned historic unproven allegations of diving are now counting against the 24-year-old in the eyes of referees.

England winger Sterling was denied a clear penalty by official Andre Marriner when he was wiped out by Terence Kongolo at Huddersfield on Sunday.

But that was the latest in a series of incidents which have left Pep Guardiola and the City hierarchy puzzled and frustrated.

City believe there are at least four other occasions in that time when Sterling should have been awarded a spot-kick.

Now they will monitor the situation in the coming weeks to see if they require a second meeting with refs chief Mike Riley within 12 months after City raised concerns over a lack of protection by officials towards their players last season.

An Etihad insider said: “Obviously you get some, you don’t get others.

"But there have been three now in the space of three weeks which replays show to be stonewall penalties.

“It has left some people here scratching their heads. It seems that Raheem is being judged differently to everyone else.”

In the middle of all those, Sterling did get one he shouldn’t have had - when he tripped over the turf against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The former Liverpool man apologised after the game and admitted it should never have been awarded.

But back in November 2017, former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claimed that Sterling ‘dives well’ after he won a penalty against the Gunners at the Etihad.

Former top Premier League ref Mark Halsey said: “Raheem has been unfairly treated by referees over recent months.

“He should have been awarded more penalties and Manchester City have every right to be concerned.”

UEFA European club landscape report 2017

lundi 21 janvier 2019

Key highlights:

1 Dosh floating around everywhere.
2 CPFC are in the top 20 wage payers in Europe.
3 Only two clubs spent more than 70% of revenue on wages. Us (79%) and AS Roma (83%). We spent £133 million. This was dwarfed by Real Madrid who spent £406 million and Man Utd who spent £306 million. However, this was only 60% and 45% of their revenue respectively. One can understand therefore why Mr Parish is keen to both expand revenue and reduce wages.
4 interestingly Spurs, who seem to have a reputation for paying low wages, spent £148 million but that was only 41% of revenue.
5 The CPFC wages bill increased by 22% in this period.
6 Regardless of TV market size, the 12 most ‘global’ clubs have more than tripled their sponsorship and commercial revenues since 2008 adding €1.6bn between them, compared with less than €1bn for the remaining 700 top-division clubs.
7 For most clubs, the matchday fans remain the heartbeat of the club, but the percentage of overall club revenue that is accounted for by ticketing has continued to decline, falling from 22% in 2008 to 14% in 2017. This is despite attendances in England rising between 5% and 15%.
8 CPFC were 27th highest revenue earner in Europe with £169 million.
9 CPFC were 15th in broadcasting revenue in Europe with £135 million (80% of total revenue). Ever wondered why clubs give priority to staying in the Premier League?

Perceived big signings

Interesting bit on sky about big money bad signings not gone to plan this is from chelsea.Shevchenko, Torres, Morata, Zhirkov, Cuadrado, Baba Rahman, Batshuayi, Drinkwater, Bakayoko etc.

Just shows how it's even harder for clubs like us.

we NEED Rakip and Jach back NOW

..to make up the numbers in training (again).

As our innovative and progressing recruitment department discovered (using cutting edge methods) these are two of the best young 'make up numbers in training' players in Europe. Their KPIs suggest they are adept at either wearing a yellow bib or not wearing one, good at jogging round pitches and having a chuckle with the other lads, Doug Freedman's meticulous analysis of Rakip particularly demonstrates a flair for running up and down one of those funny ladders they put on the ground.

We now call on football visionaries Dougie and Slimeball Moody to unearth two more gems to make up numbers in training, just like Steve Parish explained on the FYP podcast that one time - this is what we needed then and it's what we need now.

Team for Tottenham

Interesting choices coming up for Roy and Ray next Sunday.

Last time round in the cup we played a weakened team but that was against Grimsby following an intense Christmas schedule.

Spurs have a demanding schedule and a few key injuries so will either be fatigued or not at full strength.

Would love a cup run but we are only 3 points above the drop zone and will face a fully rested and rejuvenated Southampton 3 days later.

You also have to consider game time for the likes of Kelly and Ward etc.

Mix and match, perhaps something like

Goalkeeper?

Ward Kelly Sakho ßchlupp
Townsend Meyer Luka Macarthur Wilf
Wickham

Benteke to come off the bench after 60 to replace Wickham

Suggestion: Suggestion: Vincent Jansen

Worth a shout- or will Spurs missing players preclude this?

Suggestion: Odion Ighalo

Wants to come back to England.

Liverpool - lucky b*****ds

They seem to have all the luck against us of late;
- Two deflected goals yesterday
- Jules howler
- Getting away without a red for the tackle on andros
- Salah diving at Selhurst
- Benteke missing a sitter and then Luka’s dreadful misplaced pass to Sane last season
- Benteke diving at Selhurst
- It feels like they were lucky at Selhurst last season too

Maybe that luck will carry them all the way to the title. I hope not.

Answers to questions posed by musicians

1. Why does it always rain on me?

Well Fran, you’re from Glasgow and it rains on average 201 days a year in a Glasgow. So even when the sun is shining you’re gonna have a problem with lightning.

Retirement

The rat race/work grind gets me pretty down so I'd personally retire tomorrow if I could but I'm not yet in a position to financially. I really envy those that have retired, I think it would be brilliant to never have to work again and every day do what you want leisure wise with no boss to answer to. There's so many countries to visit, books to read, films to watch, sports to play/watch, family and friends to meet up with, Internet to explore, walks to go on etc that I doubt I would ever get bored personally. But then I hear of other people that have given up work say they miss it and find retirement boring.

So i'm just interested to know the following:

1. If you are retired already, what age did you retire at?

2. If you're not retired, what age do you realistically think your be able to?

3. To those that have retired, is it all it's cracked up to be?

Thanks

Surveillance capitalism.

During the past two decades surveillance capitalists have had a pretty free run, with hardly any interference from laws and regulations. Democracy has slept while surveillance capitalists amassed unprecedented concentrations of knowledge and power. These dangerous asymmetries are institutionalised in their monopolies of data science, their dominance of machine intelligence, which is surveillance capitalism’s “means of production”, their ecosystems of suppliers and customers, their lucrative prediction markets, their ability to shape the behaviour of individuals and populations, their ownership and control of our channels for social participation, and their vast capital reserves. We enter the 21st century marked by this stark inequality in the division of learning: they know more about us than we know about ourselves or than we know about them. These new forms of social inequality are inherently antidemocratic.

Does spending make a difference?

Interesting info from Planet football about spend per point over the last five seasons and the existing one in the Premiership:

To view the link you have to Register or Login

As I read this only Spurs spend less per point won than us. So we get more bang per buck than any other team bar them if I have interpreted this correctly.

We spent £4.1million per point over 5 seasons and our 2018-19 spend is currently £437,000 whilst Man Utd spent £11million / 2018-19 spend – £1.9million.

Next 4 games

We have a fairly nice and even run now. Next 4 will shape our run in, think 6 points minimum if we don't want to be looking over our shoulder for remainder of season.

Surely we can take some of these chances we have at home and look up.

Player Ratings And Reviews: Liverpool v Palace

samedi 19 janvier 2019

Poll to follow

Parish being tight makes sense

Any player that will make a realistic difference will cost £30m or more.

We will probably finish 14th ish with the current squad.

Finishing 8th with better players probably isn’t worth the £30-£60M that would make it easy.

Parish is being smart, but making it less comfortable.

I still think we could have our best season ever with the right investment though. We’ve about five players who’d look comfortable in a Champions League team. Another four who could hold a squad place in one. It’s a waste of holding on to Wilf and AWB to see safety as the priority.

But commercially, it’s good.

TRB

Note the thread on Billy Bragg, can I give a big up for a band that was very influential in my youth and I believe their messages are still relevant today, Tom Robinson Band.

Uperb classics such as Whitehall up against the Wall, Power in the Darkness, A man you never saw, Martin, not to mention the fantastic Winter of 79 in my opinion have stood the test of time.

Often remembered more for the rather bland 2-4-6-8 motorway and the iconic Glad to be Gay than some of their more political songs, I wish we had more bands around today, prepared to put their heads above the parapet.

Roy consistently getting less than he deserves

Liverpool lucky today. We conceded three unlucky goals. They were lucky at Selhurst too.

We can’t beat crap teams at home.

We play brilliantly against the top six and almost always get beaten unluckily.

At home we create a ton of chances and only convert flukes and worldies.

Roy ALWAYS gets less than he deserves.

Why?

Windsor Davies RIP

Roy Hodgson Says,Possibly No More Signings In January? But We Need Striker Who Scores

After Possible Signing Of a Goalkeeper,Roy Hints At No More Signings In January,Do We Not Need To Loan A Scoring Striker and A Midfielder?

Coach to Liverpool

Getting the coach to Anfield tomorrow, normally do the train but just after December a free coach couldn't be turned down (I'm a teacher, don't have much disposable income).

What shall I expect, can you drink on the coach and do they have chargers?

Suggestion: Che Adams

22-year-old Birmingham striker. Just netted against Norwich to register his 14th Championship goal already this season. Wolves supposedly interested.

I've liked the look of him for a while (he really reminds me of a young Deeney). Works his arse off, strong on the ball and can obviously finish.

With Birmingham's financial issues he surely wouldn't cost the earth either.

Bought a (troubled) car -- Warranty, Garage, Dealer issue

Having been hit with lots of advice from those around me after my new second hand car hit trouble last week within two weeks of buying it. I thought i'd turn to the BBS for a little bit of helpful advice.
Basically within a few days i'd noticed i was getting pretty strong exhaust fumes coming into the car when reversing or dawdling through town (to the extent where me and the missus had to wind down the windows and pull up at one stage). During my 50 miles commute, no real problems although i'd often use the recycle air just in case but did try experimenting to see if i could find a pattern. Its a Seat Leon TDi Ecomotive so nowt racy.
Long and short is i went down the 3 month warranty route as advised by the dealers in the past, who basically logged the the issue and sent me on my way to my local garage for diagnosis. Stating that dependent on the findings whether they'd pay or not pay out. Now the garage has put it down to a leaking turbo (no pound signs excitement there is there) despite a new one being fitted last year. Needless to say the turbo got checked twice (properly the 2nd time after a little moan in the direction of the warranty company) and is now coming back with a clean bill of health as such. So it's looking like the warranty has nothing to cover, as the labour will only be covered should there be a defect. Now i'm currently stuck in that awkward position of hitting the dealer hard on next recourse of action and the possibility of questioning my local garages potential for misdiagnosis (has happened in the past with work vans) in the vain hope of keeping the bill down. Gut feeling says when the turbo is re-fitted the same issue is likely to arise, which will leave the garage with a perfect get out of maintaining the issue is with the turbo and not looking further afield without further labour costs. He certainly seems to be putting all his eggs in one basket and can be a real teeth sucker at times.

The dealer has asked to be kept informed and was supposedly having a word with the warranty company a couple of days ago, although with the turbo now being given a bill of health i'd say the warranty company are off the hook under their terms.

Any ideas on my next possible course of correct action before i blunder in all South London, like i have been known to in the past, but am currently trying not to get into a muddle and work through it methodically. At this stage i really don't want to get rid of the car (it would need to back to Birmingham and is pretty decent apart from this :D) and would mean i'd probably end up back to square one with my old Smart i traded in, and still looking for yet another car which i have precious little time for.
Any advice great or small would be appreciated and even the odd laugh would help because i know there will be a few smart answers on the South London way to come for sure :p

Buying a New Car- Advice?

Another thing I wish I was taught in School. When I am lost in life, I find the BBS a pretty useful forum for advice so would appreciate some wisdom if anybody has any!! :)

At 34 years old, I've only ever had 2 cars and I really don't know where to start in terms of buying a new one. I have about £15k budget. I am disposing of my hairdressers car to get something a bit more sensible that my GF can also drive.

My colleagues all lease from Mercedes and so I have exchanged emails with somebody there. I am tempted to get a new A-Class. I have been quoted for a 180 diesel AMG line as follows; £3500 deposit it would be £386 over 3 years or £356 over 4 years.

I suppose I have 3 questions;

1) Is it more economical to lease a new car, or should I just buy outright a second hand/nearly-new with low mileage?

2) Is buying a Diesel a good idea?

3) Is a Mercedes A-class a good choice or should I consider a BMW 1 or Audi A3 or other?

Discussion: FIFA loan limits

jeudi 17 janvier 2019

If, as predicted FIFA limit loans to between 6 and 8 players, in 2020/21 will there suddenly be a lot of cheaper players around? I’m thinking that Chelsea currently have somewhere around 40 players out on loan what will they do if 32 have to go back to the club and they have to pay all of their wages? Even for them that must have an impact on FFP?

Rumour: Wan-Bissaka Summer 2019

Even though its the Mirror, doubt many here were expecting no offers for AWB to come in given the rate he has risen in the last year, rumours building that it could end up in a bidding war this summer. City's interested has been heavily rumoured already.

WAN-BISSAKA BATTLE

Manchester United and Chelsea are set to fight over the signature of Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 21-year-old right-back has caught the eye with his seamless adaptation to Premier League football, cementing his place in Palace’s first-team.

Manchester City have reportedly kept tabs on the England U21 international and now United and Chelsea have followed suit.
I think a few of us already expected Zaha and Sakho may be off in the summer, but do you think we have a chance at keeping AWB? What fee would you want to see if it had to happen? Personally I dont see an equal replacement, but any names come to mind?

All said and done I hope we can keep him, he has been probably the one consistent ray of light through all the recent slumps and regardless of how shit we have played at times I always enjoy seeing him shut out everyone.

Time for a People's Vote!

And here is the two choices!

1. Back Theresa May's Leave deal .... Apparently it's the only deal on offer.
2. We just Leave on WTO while waiting for a trade deal and save 30 odd billion.

No Remain option is needed because that has already been dealt with in the last people's vote....
Parliament is divided and cannot lead .... Time for the second vote!

Feel free to agree or give your second referendum choices! (Snowflake wankers!) ;)

Footballers and double-barrelled surnames

I was reading the report on the Bromley/Charlton Kent Cup game from last night and saw that Charlton had a least 3 players (mentioned in the report - there may have been more) with double-barrelled surnames.

No big deal, but it is something that seems much more prevalent these days than of yore. Sometimes it can get to be quite a mouthful. Historically the trait has been reserved for the upper classes to the point of being a parody. Apparently the aristocracy don't have a monopoly on this anymore.

I'm posting this in General Chit Chat as it transcends football, and I'm sure will be told it is sociological phenomenon brought about by living in the diverse cosmopolitan make-up of the UK/world today (or some such reasoning).

Also, I wonder if we could make up a complete team of double barrel named players that would give commentators nightmares!

And yes... I'm bored!

Bathroom flooding- Advice needed

mardi 15 janvier 2019

Hoping for some advice here.

This morning I put the shower on upstairs and left it for a minute, when I came back the floor was flooded. My wife’s hair was caught in the plughole and I scooped up all the water and through anything I could to soak the rest up. The flooring is laminate I believe. I checked downstairs in the boys room and there was no dripping but two damp patches. The floor is now dry and the light in the boys room is fine but I am panicking that there may be further issues (hoping it is just the anxiety). I checked on lunch and came home from work and put the heating on low which may help. If there was no dripping and the floor is now dry then should all be okay? I am a big worrier unfortunately.

Hope someone may have some advice on what I need to do if anything. The boards in the middle of the floors, will they dry okay for example?

Suggestion: Bernard Tekpetey

Bernard Tekpetey of Paderborn is having a fine season in the Bundesliga 2.

He's an offensive midfielder who has scored 8 goals so far this season in twenty appearances.

At just twenty one the Ghanain is linked with a move back to Schalke to ironically replace our own Max Meyer. I realise that the priority is up-front but these our the sort of young players that should be of interest to Dougie and Steve P.

I don't see any point in re recruiting Cabaye. His body doesn't allow him to play a whole season and we have adequate cover.

The Club’s financial situation

I get that we have a large wage bill, have signed a lease on a new trading ground and are planing to build a new stadium. We also don’t have any debt. These are all good things and in the long term interest of the Club.

What I’m struggling with is how we are only going to be in the loan market this window. Is this a negotiating ploy? (Arsenal and others are saying similar). Or do we really not have cash for the right players?

I get that we are trying to stay within FFP rules (unlike others) but could someone better versed in the finances of the Club confirm if we effectively spend all of our revenue? If so does that mean that we will be looking at cheap signings again in the summer?

Knockaert 2018/19 thread

In homage to the Zaha one on NSC.

How is he doing this year? :jerkit:

Shades of Pardew

Seems to me there are real shades of Pardew in how we're playing under Hodgson. generally crap week on week and the odd decent result. Steve Parish is obviously a prat, I have never met anyone that's come into contact with him that thinks he's anything other than a total cock, but Roy really has to take responsibility for how badly we're doing this season.

Okay, we need a striker, but he's the one that has just chosen to include Benteke, the laziest twat I've ever seen at Palace, in the squad, and yet send Sorloth out on loan. he's the one that never makes any bloody subs until injury time :wallbash::wallbash: He's the one that chooses to go into games WITHOUT a striker at times. He's the one that barely gives our best creative midfielder, Meyer, a chance.

The way we've been playing this season is just a joke, we have a squad easily capable of at LEAST mid-table stability, not another bloody relegation battle. I think we'll stay up, we will just have enough, but it's a pathetic attitude that survival is all. there's no way we should be doing as bad as we are, in AWB and Zaha we have two of the best players in the league in their position, and the likes of Sakho, Tomkins, Mccarthur, Townsend etc. it's not like they're bad players.

I feel we are very much in Pardew territory, the odd decent result, which has nothing to do with the manager whatsoever. take Wolves, they were utter crap first half, we should've been out of sight, yet the actually best chance of the first half went to them!! it's all so negative and unproductive. okay, we got an offside goal and a last kick penalty, but it's just so typical of how we've played this season. under a better manager we'd have been 3-0 up at half time and game out of site, eventually we got lucky.

he did a great job for us last season, but we have been utterly terrible this season, and I just hope Parish doesn't hang on and on like he did with Pardew, because if he does I think this time we'll be beyond repair.

Anyone get the numberplate or company name on the van ?

Underperforming manager underperforming squad!

It's one or both as on paper we should be much higher up the league .... For me Roy is killing the attacking flair part of our play ... I hated Pardews gay abandonment in Tactics but I'm starting to miss it!

Declan Rice - who the **** does he think he is?

Is anyone else becoming increasingly bored/ frustrated/ irate at the Declan Rice will he, won't he choose Engalnd to play for at international level discussion?

Who on earth is this entitled tot?

There was a time when playing for your nation meant something more visceral, privileged and intuitive. Weighing up two home nations as if they were opportunities to be gamed for best personal benefit is incredibly disrespectful to international football, and to the two countries he hopes to represent.

I read today that he was distracted by contract negotiation at West Ham and injury. Us folk in the real world have to deal with all sorts of distracting stuff too, like picking the kids up from school, doing a decent job at work, amd paying the bills on time. Negotiating a 15 fold pay rise alongside would be a ******* doddle - and I wouldn't have an agent looking after it for me.

So my employers very kindly haven't paid me since November and after the directors went awol for a while they have finally called in the liquidators and we have been told we are all now redundant. As they cannot pay our wages, we were told to apply online to get the money from the government. In my case I am not eligible for a redundancy payment as I was there just under 2 years, but my contract states I have 1 month's notice period. Does anyone know if you get paid this on top of outstsnding wages when you make such a claim as it is not really clear.

Discussion: How Many Players We Miss Out are Successes?

Given over the last 3 years we have been linked a large number of strikers, it struck me that very few have been successes. I have defined successes as someone who has a better goal ratio than 4 in 10, but perhaps that is a little harsh. Have I missed any players?

Failures

Kelechi Iheanacho - Signed for Leicester for £25m. So far scored 10 goals in 51 appearances.

Michy Batshuayi - Signed for Cheslea for £33m. Scored 19 goals in 53 appearances.

Moussa Dembele - Signed for Lyon for £20m. Scored 6 goals in 17 games in Ligue 1.

Giovanni Simeone - Signed for Fiorentina for £15m. Scored 18 in 57 games.

Islam Slimani - Signed for Leicester for £28m. Scored 12 goals in 47 games before going on loan to Newcastle where he was 0 for 4.

Cenk Tosun - Signed for Everton for £27m. Scored 7 goals in 27 games.

Diafra Sakho - Signed for Rennes for £8m. Scored 3 goals in 16 appearances in Ligue 1.

Rudy Gestede - Signed for Villa for £6m. Scored 6 goals in 36 games.

Jordan Hugill - Signed for West Ham for £10m. Didn't score in the 22 minutes he had on the pitch. Now on loan at Boro and has scored 6 in 22.

Benik Afobe - Signed for Bournemouth for £10m. Scored 11 goals in 70 games.

Guido Carillo - Signed for Southampton for £19m. Scored no goals in 9 games.

Aleksander Mitrovic - Signed for Fulham for £22m. Scored 8 goals in 21 games.

Successes

Danny Ings - Signed for Southampton for £20m. Scored 8 goals in 16 games.

Premier League trio chase Ipswich star Dozzell

Premier League trio Bournemouth, Brighton and Crystal Palace are all tracking fit-again Ipswich ace Andre Dozzell.

The 19-year-old midfielder - valued at £5 million by the Tractor Boys - is back in action after suffering a cruciate ligament injury on the opening day of last season that ruled him out for more than a year.

Dozzell was a member of the England side that won the Under-17 and Under- 19 European titles in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Ipswich, rock-bottom of the Championship and 10 points from safety, may be tempted to cash in to help fund new signings in their desperate bid to beat the drop.

Italy's populist rulers have lent vocal and technological support to the yellow vest movement after eight weeks of riots in France.

"I support honest citizens who protest against a president who governs against his own people," Italian deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini said on Monday (7 January), referring to French president Emmanuel Macron.

Luigi Di Maio ( offered yellow vest leaders his party's IT platform to organise events

"Yellow vests, do not weaken!", Luigi di Maio, Italy's other deputy prime minister, added.

Di Maio, from the Five Star Movement (5MS) party in Italy's ruling coalition, also offered yellow vest leaders the use of his party's IT platform, called Rousseau, to help organise future events in France.

Macron has pitted himself against Salvini as the head of a liberal pro-EU front against the Italian's anti-EU league in the coming European Parliament (EP) elections.

The French president, a former investment banker, is also a bogeyman for 5MS-type populism, with Di Maio, on Monday, ramming the idea home.

Macron represented "the interests of the elites, those who live off privilege, no longer those of the people," Di Maio said on his blog.

"A new Europe is being born. That of the 'yellow vests', that of movements, that of direct democracy. It's a tough battle that we can win together," Di Maio added.

The Rousseau IT platform is designed to help organise events on the ground, select candidates, and draft electoral programmes in what could help transform the French yellow vest movement into a political party.

Eintracht Frankfurt forward Luka Jovic, on loan from Benfica, was linked with Palace before Christmas, but his strike partner in Germany Ante Rebic is also the subject of interest.

Jovic's 17 goals in all competitions this season may make him too expensive to sign, but the 21-year-old Serbian's team-mate Rebic, who started for Croatia in their World Cup final defeat to France, may command a smaller fee.
