Rules are as follows
1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.
2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)
3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).
4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.
5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.
6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.
7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.
8 Singles and upwards accepted.
9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.
10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2
11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.
12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.
13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..
14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You cant shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.
15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher
16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)
17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Are the hf good for the club?
Simple question. Taking into account everything the hf have done for the club are they good or bad for the club?
Does anyone have a big indie mp3 collection?
Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets etc, that they would be willing to burn onto an SD card for me in exchange for dosh/charitable donation/varnish etc.. Got shit music in my car.
Things that make you feel awkward.
Yes it's another 'things' thread. Insincere apologies to Maidstoned in advance.
Awkward/uncomfortable/embarassing things. Last night was getting in the lift at work, door start closing and guy quickly rushes over to squeeze in - helpfully I reach across and start hammering the 'open doors' button. He jams a foot in, the door opens and lift carries on.
Then I realise I was actually hammering the 'close doors' button. This guy is aware of that. We stand there in silence while he is probably wondering why I'm such a c***.
I mention it to him as we get out of the lift expecting him to laugh it off. He doesn't, just looks at me as if I'm some sort of freak. FFS.

BHAFC's 'Award winning stadium'
With one of football's highest ever cost-to-seat build ratios, the much lauded, award winning Amex stadium is a source of great pride for Brighton customers.
Built in the middle of nowhere, it was no doubt ensured that within the cost of the £100m buikding project, there would be ample transport links and absolutely no need to bribe the traditionally non football supporting people of Sussex with free travel in order to persuade them to endure the trip on a regular basis.
Share your experiences of this award winning venue with us all, so we can enjoy a slice of this unique success story unfolding in the South Downs.

Positives from Brighton away
I suspect that this thread will die a death as it's far more fun to look at the other stuff, but in the interests of balance:
Mighty pints in the John Harvey Tavern in Lewes pre match & I had a quick chat with Neil Shipperley who was in there.
We kept a clean sheet.
We didn't lose.
Benteke got 90 minutes, so should improve his fitness.
No injuries (Cabaye, maybe?)
I saw psychokiller.
Murray applauding the away support at the end.
The actions of some of our fans has created a Tarquin moral explosion on social media.

I really think we need to become better at corners and free kicks. We don't look threatening from them other than the odd occasion.
I know it's been said before, but we need to make sure we practice so we become decent and put the opposition keeper and defenders under real pressure.
Hopefully, we can get some goals by improving our delivery and positioning from set piece routines.

Miss of the season
mardi 28 novembre 2017
The double miss/save by Benteke and Zaha feels like the latest in a long line of straightforward goal scoring chances we have passed up this season.
- Zaha misses against Spurs, Newcastle
- PVA misses against Chelsea, Newcastle
- Benteke misses against Liverpool, Burnley, Everton
- Cabaye misses against West Ham
- Dann misses against Burnley
- There are more
I know weve come up against top goalkeeping, but it really does feel like were missing more good opportunities than I can remember.
So the question is, which is the miss of the season?

More loud bangs coming through on the comm tonight....
6 points from 12th
Considering our horrendous start and not being adrift more.
I quite like the look of the table considering only 6 points from 12th and next 5 games still looking good on paper.
It doesn't feel its mission impossible anymore and feel more positive going into games as do the player's

When Palace win the toss at home.
I have always wondered why we always choose to shoot towards the holmesdale in the second half. I assume that is what happens. It would be nice if they mixed it up a bit. Saturday was a rare treat for us whitehorse regulars and it's been a pretty succesful end for us this season as well!
Champ. Manager legend and his story.....
"We went to a small, small village in Malaysia. The plane landed, I gave my passport to the officer. He was shocked. 'Are you really Tonton Zola Moukoko?' he asked. 'You can't be the one that was playing at Derby?'"

Rumour: Benik Afobe
Reports that Benik Afobe could be a £15m target in January. The out of favour Bournemouth striker has scored 10 goals in 30 games in the Premiership.
Brighton wall art vandalised
You shouldn't laugh, but well...
Wonder if this was left over paint from the Middlesbrough bus job?

Chris Hughton's Teamtalk
Apparently the defacing of the 'Bruno mural' (yes, there is a mural of 'Bruno' on a wall in Brighton) has all but written Hughton's team talk for him.
Any ideas as to how this works?
"Ok lads, someone's defaced our 'Bruno's' mural. (Yes, theres a mural of Bruno somewhere in Brighton. Pardon? No, I'm not sure, either). Anyway, as you'd expect, our fans are pretty much in tears over the whole thing, and writing some very harsh words about it. Very harsh.
When Palace come to town, I want you to harness that middle class, faux superior indignation and complain - and I mean COMPLAIN - for the whole 90 minutes against Palace. And remember, even if they win every challenge, and score more goals, you are the classier team, and that's all that matters."

I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here 2017.
After much deliberation I decided to start this thread. The reason for my intrepidation was my awareness of the sensitivity towards starting a thread that was once the sole domain of a bbs legend and a much loved friend of many participating on here. I do this tonight with the outmost respect but also because, and I hope that those who knew him agree, he would want to absolutely annihilate these feckwits!!!!

Converting various types of video files to .avi
To cut a long story short, I need to convert various types of video files to .avi as it is the only file type the aging TV in my local recognises (via usb port).
I am therefore looking for recommendations on a cheap (or free) piece of software to do the job whilst losing the minimum in quality re encoding the files.
Thanks in advance. :)

Help Me Be Cool
Sadly, it's never going to happen because I'm a bit of a bellend. However, it's my eldest son's 21st birthday coming up and, as he has a decent collection of vinyl, I'd like to get him three timeless albums that he might not otherwise buy.
The first of the three is going to be 2nd Tindersticks Album by, er Tindersticks.
For the final two I'm at a bit of a loss because he has most of my music collection that he likes already. I'm thinking maybe something by The Fall, but as I only like a few of their (his) tracks and find it a bit annoying after a while, I don't know which one would be the most accessible. Finally, I'm thinking maybe one of the first two Damned albums. Got some doubts about these choices though...
He likes the leftfield, cult or unique and is open to any genre. Any help selecting this trio would be much appreciated. All credit will go to me upon presentation - it will be as if you had no input (that's if anyone can be bothered to reply :)).

Scatter Graphs of the 17/18 season so far

A fairly interesting article displaying a variety of charts indicating stats such as shooting and defending efficiency. (Im on my phone, so I hope the link works.)
What strikes me most about Palace is just how far away we are from expectation in terms of our goals scored. Those records we set at the beginning of the season do seem to be almost astronomially rare, although not helped by a dismal transfer window. Will we see a return to the norm as the season goes on? The stats suggest so, even if the table ranks us last right now.
As someone whos played poker professionally, I have a reasonable understanding of variance. In poker, you can do all the right things and still lose if some unlikely outcome occurs, but over a large sample, you will win. Recent performances and stats suggest we will improve. In fact, compared to most teams around us, were looking better in some of these stats.
Looking at some other teams, Burnley looks like they have ran well over their sample of games so far, although Im not predicting a Palace 15/16 season of two halves, I do think they will fall away somewhat.
Oh and City really are just amazingly good right now.

Lewis Hamilton and Twitter
Lewis, out tax dodging F1 champ, is now using this twatter rule
....to instaban Twitter users who criticise him for his tax dodging and extremely low moral compass. I called on him to pay the VAT bill he owes, the c-unit, but looking at the above rule I don't see any rule breach. I have asked twatter why they are allowing this, which rule was actually broken and if so is profanity now banned from Twitter

This is from 2013 but I doubt it is any different now. All the Brexit lot bang on about the EU being undemocratic (which it is), but we have an entirely unelected second chamber and a medieval head of state. It's been said before on here that the head of state is just a figurehead with no power, this shows that obviously isn't true.

On Your Head
Having recently watched the BBC / Alan Shearer documentary about the negative effect heading footballs can have on cognitive health, it seems there is a growing recognition of the problem and a movement to adjust how football approaches the issue. Already, children are being actively discouraged to head footballs and the F.A. may well have to fork out to create a compensation fund for old pros afflicted after the game is done with them, as in the NFL. Such an initiative would cost mucho dinero to the powers behind football, at which point radical changes to the professional game just might occur in the years ahead.
This is a potential Pandora's Box for our game and raises many questions about the place for heading in the modern game, protecting health, especially in children, and whether technologies could create a safer football. Or should meeting a ball with a bonce be considered part of the risk of contact sport?
Thoughts?

On a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being "Not important at all", 5 being "Somewhat important, but not biggest game of the season" and 10 meaning that "Palace must definitely win this game".

On Iplayer for another month or so.
I know it's been mentioned on the Corbyn thread but I think it merits a thread of its own. Amazing thing. Just had chance to watch it.
Kinnock Junior's face on election night truly the highlight. In fairness, I am sure the result was a shock to everyone. There really does seem to have been a sea change in the party and older sceptical supporters like me have been a bit sidelined.
That would have been OK if we'd lost. We could have stuck to the "Corbyn is unelectable" line. But he sort of won. Definitely won in terms of increased seats and vote share. Most impressive was his enthusing of young people. Received wisdom is that they never vote. I think they might have been lied to a bit, but politicians have been lying to get votes since forever. My hackles used to rise a bit when the likes of cockneyrebel would advocate banding together to unseat centrist MPs. I now think he's on to something. There is a generational change going on. The younger membership want different things to me. Maybe we should be a bit more honest with each other. The Momentum people are just moulding the party in their image. They've earnt the right to do that. They're the ones who got the vote out in June even if they can no longer rely on mine.

Next summers disaster predictions.
vendredi 24 novembre 2017
Every summer Palace seem to have a major pre season set back such as Pulis quitting, transfer targets not being signed over petty reasons such as not wanting to pay agents fees, BFS retiring.
I was wondering what will happen before the start of next season.
Wild breaking a leg in a pre season friendly against Bromley with Roy dying the night before the season opener is my prediction.

Have written a piece on the lack of control Roy and any manager has in turning good performances into wins, but how we should trust that we are moving in the right direction and the results *should* come.

More evidence that our democracy is corrupt
Ken Clarke Says David Cameron Did "Some Sort Of Deal" To Win Rupert Murdoch's Support
"We had got Andy Coulson on board I think he was Murdochs man, that was part of the deal I assume as the press officer. I am not being totally indiscreet."
Ken Clarke has claimed David Cameron may have done "some sort of a deal" to win the support of Rupert Murdoch's newspapers in the run-up to the 2010 general election, culminating in senior executives at the Sun demanding the government introduce prison ships to the UK because the newspaper was running a campaign on the issue.
"Within a few weeks of taking over my prime minister arranged a meeting with Rebekah Brooks. Rebekah Brooks described herself as running the government now in partnership with David Cameron. I found myself having an extraordinary meeting with Rebekah who was instructing me on criminal justice policy from now on, as I think she had instructed my predecessor, so far as I could see, judging from the numbers of people we had in prison and the growth of rather exotic sentences.

Wiring Help
Ok - I'm not wired properly.
I'm installing a motion sensor for a porch light. The cable from the house has black, grey and brown wires, plus a neutral (green & yellow), which I have already stuck in a terminal block of its own.
The sensor has red, brown and blue wires.
I need to connect the wires via a terminal block. Does anyone know which color should connect to which?
The sensor was already wired but I uninstalled it and now forget which cable joined to which. Should have taken a photo.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.
Ref for Stoke game - Mike Dean
I don't usually take much notice about who is the ref for the next game, they are all about as average as each other usually.
It does seem though that we have had some decent games when Mike Dean has been the ref though, and we've got him for the Stoke game.
In the past Stoke have absolutely hated him!

Let's hope that our better than average recent record in recent games against Stoke continues! All we can ask for is common sense!

Championship
Now I really don't want us to go down, but if the worse happens i quite like the idea of all those Saturday and midweek games in the championship
obviously, only for one season though and do a newcastle/ burnley/ hull etc.
who else in a strange way wouldn't be too disappointed?

Digitiser.
Does anyone remember this on C4 teletext?
Well you should!
I loved Digi. After Ceefax Football to see if Palace had bought anyone then I went straight to Digitiser on C4 teletext in the early 90's.
The founder is a bloke called Paul Rose and it's still going strong in internet form.

Numerous reasons to be optimistic
Easy to feel that we have been hard done by, luck is against us and with each passing game we move closer to the Championship....I couldn't see things more differently....I truly believe this is going to be a really positive season in which the club continues its positive development....
All we need to do over the next 26 games (78 pts) is score more points than the following Swansea City 4 pts WHU 5 pts and WBA 6 pts an average of out scoring these opponents by between 0.15 and 0.23 per game.....something I would like to think is wholly achievable.
Other factors include that in the first dozen games we have played 5 of the top 6 in fact 6 of the first 7 of which all but one has been away from home....Swansea have only played 3 of the top 6 WHU 4 of the top 6 and WBA again only 3 of the top 6.......add our current home form unbeaten in three is really positive, factor in that every time Zaha scores we fail to lose and you start getting really positive signs for the season ahead......add the massive factor that WHU have got Moyes and WBA may well get Pardew and that Clement is finding his Derby form and all looks rosy......so as the festive season begins I for one am wholly optimistic.

Schools Near Bickley - and Recommendations?
Folks,
A colleague has just moved into the Bickley area and he has 2 daughters he is looking to place in schools.
One is in year 6 and the other would be year 8 from their last schools.
Does anyone have any recommendations for schools to go for - or even avoid in that area?
Any feedback gratefully received.
Thanks,
Aidan

Camera advice needed
My daughter turns 16 next month a couple of days before Christmas Day and she would like a camera.....
Because her birthday and Christmas are so close she has the option to go go large on her present.
Shes taken this option so I have a budget of around £250 - £300 to get her started. (Dont judge me its not about the money)
Where should I begin? Im tempted to think that there is better value in a really good second hand camera over a new one but Im pretty clueless to be honest. Are there any dos and donts to consider? Any great little shops to look at.
Thanks in advance.

Suggestion: Cheikhou Kouyate
If Moyes has a clear out in January, this could be one he looks to change. Probably be able to get at a reasonable price as will have turned 29 by then. Looks like a player in need of a new challenge(anyone would look shit in their current team) and can also chip in with a few goals. The bonus in buying him is it will stop him having a blinder whenever he plays us.
Things you dont get
What things dont you really understand the hype about, but seem in the minority by holding that opinion.
Ill start - original pieces of art. If I have a painting on my wall thats painted by the original person or is just a copy, I dont care. I dont understand at all why anyone gives a shit about stuff like that as effectively, its basicaly the same picture that goes on your wall, no?
Ill also add jewellery. I just dont get why gold and diamonds, etc are so popular.

Speed Awareness Course
I got nicked by camera for doing 46 in a 40 zone, I'm annoyed at the camera position and how tight it was especially as it was on a city motorway with a permanent restriction, but anyway, the penalty is £100+3 points or a speed awareness course.
Who has been on one? What's it like? How long does it take? What's the approx admin fee? Is it always a weekend thing? Can I do an evening? Just weighing up options. It might be more worthwhile to pay up instead if I have to take holiday and travel etc Any info welcome before I fill the form in.
Thanks

Video Assistant Referee
Looked for a thread on this. Couldn't find one so I thought I'd start one.
Niasse's tuck and salko on Saturday seems to have re-surfaced this topic up again so it's worth a discussion. Should this be introduced?
Against are the perennial arguments over the potential it has to interrupt the game; that refereeing mishaps are part of the theatre and these decisions even out over time.
For is the argument that there's loads of cameras and readily available coverage beamed to an audience in the hundreds of millions who have better real-time information than the poor fella who is charged with making the decisions. They don't help themselves, but to this end the ref is being hung out to dry.
My opinion is that the argument for is persuasive to the extent that it is, at least used for major decisions. Goals, penalties and red cards. With each there is a natural break in play. These major decisions have the most impact upon games. By having a qualified ref watching a TV feed with different angles the guy on the pitch has the necessary support to be sure of his positions rather than guessing; making the wrong decision by being unsighted etc.
Other leagues are beginning to use it. The financial gap between the PL and Championship is sufficiently huge that the risk of refereeing mistakes condemning a club is now too great. It makes no sense to me that this technology isn't introduced.
However it's a view.

Any pubs that will allow home and away fans? Want to meet my Brighton mate before the game....
Speroni for World Cup 2018
Personally I am surprised at how jules has done so well after not playing for a while . Leaving the pass debate from Saturday aside though that's the sort of thing guardiola wants from his keepers.
Anyway what's the current state of Argentinian goalkeeping. Anybody know who the current 3 are. Does jules have a chance of dislodging any of them if he keeps this form and his place?
Would love to see him get a chance even in a build up match .

Suggestion: Stockdale
Someone at work today said that they wouldn't be surprised if Roy went for Stockdale in Jan.
They worked together at Fulham. Championship keeper of the year last year but obviously stained by his time at Brighton.
I think he is injured currently, but should be back by Jan.

Generational stereotypes

This article on BBC below got me thinking about generational differences, it was the first time I have ever heard of my generation even having a name, having heard of Greatest Generation, Baby Boomers and Millennials. Turns out I'm firmly in the middle of "To view the link you have to Register or Login"
....and so I went and had a read on Wiki and was quite impressed tbh. I've thought for a long time about the Boomers being like pirates (take everything, give nothing back) but it's not until you read a few of the comments that you realise that there is a real difference, and that these stereotypes come to the surface.
I laughed at this part in the Wiki article
I couldn't agree more, and boy do that lot seem to have it in for everybody else, such as this angry nimby
"You Have to forgive the young On here, demands and getting what they want off their parents has been the way they have been brought up, ask and get, not work for it. We the older set have given into them too easy so they expect everything on a plate even if your working till 90 to give them it."
Discuss.

Quote:
"In the 2008 book, X Saves the World: How Generation X Got the Shaft but Can Still Keep Everything from Sucking, author Jeff Gordinier describes Generation X as a "dark horse demographic" which "doesn't seek the limelight". Gordiner cited examples of Gen Xers' contributions to society such as: Google, Wikipedia, Amazon.com and YouTube, arguing if Boomers had created them, "we'd never hear the end of it". |

Match Updates: Brighton vs Stoke. 20/11/17 - KO 8pm
Should be interesting to watch tonight. In one sense we don't want Stoke to build up any momentum with a win before they play us next but it's bloody Brighton and we always want them to get smashed. Jeez! :wallbash:
Suggestion: Your January shopping list
So what would you do if it was your call in January? We will be in a relegation scrap, we could be 6-9 points away from safety. Looking at the squad now what would you do?
Outs:
Difficult because you need someone willing to take the players but.....
Jordan Mutch - just get him off the list loan, free, whatever
PVA - If there is interest in him we have too many left backs and questionable if any are good enough
Hennessey - See if Sunderland are interested in taking him, only 6 months left so not much of a fee
Fosu-Mensah - if he is not going to be starting regularly then look to return him to Man Utd to free up a loan spot
Ins:
Ronnow probably cost £3-4m to come in and take the gloves
Wilshere - if we cannot get Cabaye to sign a new deal then JW will be reasonable value in the Jan market given he has only 6months left and wants to go to WC
Sturridge - IF Fosu-Mensah goes back he woud give us a very different option up top, good finisher and needs somewhere to play to go to the WC - we would probably be a fair way down any list of destinations but a 6 month loan and he would play might suit him or..
Babacar - been an ever present in transfer windows for a while now - maybe it is time to bring him in? or
Sanabria from Real Betis
(Zapata on loan at Sampdoria would be good but i think they have an obligation to buy him from Napoli next summer)
Not much money coming in but the money we would have to pay would hopefully be nowhere near last years outlay in Jan.

Why does Electronic Banking....
dimanche 19 novembre 2017
...need Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays off?
Do computers need to rest? A lay-in occasionally? A day a the beach etc.?
I think not :hmph:
Reason: when transferring money electronically between banks it takes until the next business day to happen.

Thanks for everything Parish out
Reports from multiple sources within the club this evening expect Steve Parish to announce his resignation from the club tomorrow. I've been told he's decided to jump before he was shoved
New Captain required?
We just seem unable to secure wins when well placed to do so like yesterday against Everton. I remember fondly the likes of Jim Cannon, Gareth Southgate, Geoff Thomas and Mile Jedinak. All were exceptional Captains who were highly respected, played for the shirt, led by example, never accepted defeat, and demanded the very best from team members on the field. Oh for such a motivator and role model now, we certainly need it.

Is it time for Video Replays?
Personally I wasnt in favour of this idea originally but after watching the Rugby highlights today & seeing how thoroughly every Try is reviewed, Ive started to wonder if now might be the right time to drag football in line with most other mainstream sports?
With todays outrageous dive & Kompany escaping a blatant red card its surely in the best interests of fairness to stop cheating & injustice once & for all. It would also help referees to bring a moment of clarity to any situation where they are under immense pressure to make the right decision on the spot.
Video replays are widely used in almost all other mainstream sports like Cricket, Tennis, Rugby & the NFL & have actually enhanced the overall fan experience rather than detracted from it. Can you imagine the fans waiting nervously for the penalty decision as its reviewed upstairs with the heartbeat sound pumping out of the speakers in the ground & the final decision being displayed on the scoreboard?

Selhurst and Thornton Heath Station Not Available For The Everton Game
Due to Rail Engineering Works both Selhurst and Thornton Heath Station will be out of use for the Everton game on Saturday.
The only station available for the match will be Norwood Junction which will be rammed with people especially after the game when both Palace and Everton fans plus the general public will have to use it.
This is another case of very poor scheduling by Southern and will inconvenience thousands of people plus create problems for the British Transport Police as usually away fans would use Thornton Heath Station but now all fans will be using Norwood Junction.

A thread for any good deals you might see.
Amazon started their sales at midnight. Needed a new xbox one as mine was on the way out. Got a 1TB xbox one s, Assassins Creed; Origins, Rainbow 6 Siege (didn't really want it but was part of the bundle), and COD:WWII, all for £230, which I think was pretty decent.
COD could be swapped for Fifa 18 or Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Landmark study links Tory austerity to 120,000 deaths
Austerity Kills - projected to be 200,000 by 2020 - all for a totally pointless exercise - health warning our government kills its own citizens
To view the link you have to Register or Login
The Conservatives have been accused of economic murder for austerity policies which a new study suggests have caused 120,000 deaths.
The paper found that there were 45,000 more deaths in the first four years of Tory-led efficiencies than would have been expected if funding had stayed at pre-election levels.
On this trajectory that could rise to nearly 200,000 excess deaths by the end of 2020, even with the extra funding that has been earmarked for public sector services this year.
Real terms funding for health and social care fell under the Conservative-led Coalition Government in 2010, and the researchers conclude this may have produced the substantial increase in deaths.
The study, published in BMJ Open today, estimated that to return death rates to their pre-2010 levels spending would need to increase by £25.3bn.

Best Pub For Pre/Post Match Atmosphere?
Hi all,
Havent been to a game in a couple of years as I havent been in the country. Going to my first game of the season and bringing a friend to the game this weekend. .
Would like to know the best pub for pre and post match atmosphere? Preferably where a lot of chanting is going on and is a bit lively!
Any information would be great!

Iain Moody working back at Palace?
Noticed our disgraced ex Sporting Director Iain Moody pictured in the directors box sitting next to Mark Bright on a photo re-tweeted by the official CPFC account.
It's a photo from this season as our new sponsor logo is visible on the advertising board.
Anyone know if he is back working at the club in some capacity?
I have to say i'd be extremely disappointed if that's the case and would be another error of judgement by Parish. The guy is racist, homophobic and sexist, and caused so much damage to club morale during his time here.

A real surprise to see that he has been making stuff up. Unlike him.

Hat trick (own goal, my arse), and on the way to the World Cup. Congratulations to a great captain.
Match Updates: Australia v Honduras
Belated start to the thread ... but it has a strong Palace connection.
Jedinak puts Australia 2-0 up on aggregate with 20 minutes to go with a penalty, after scoring the first with a free kick. Honduras will need to score at least 2 goals now.

Alan Shearer: Dementia, Football and Me
Did anyone catch this the other night? I caught up on iplayer.
They seemed to gloss over the main issue for me here, that the old footballs when wet, were extremely heavy and would cause a lot more damage than the modern ones. They mentioned it, but it seemed to be a passing comment, which I thought was strange.

The (third) White kit
When will we actually wear it?
Bournemouth away perhaps? Where else would there be a clash?
I do like it - prefer it to the away but would be nice to see it worn in anger at least once?

Hi
I posted on a thread a while ago. I now want to reference/quote that post on a different thread. Apologies if I'm missing something simple but how do I do this?
Thanks in advance.

Didn't think this thing could get much lower. But he managed it.

On the weekend he could have been paying respects to the British men and women killed fighting fascism, Tommy Robinson chose to march in Poland alongside neo-Nazis and Hitler worshippers. Tiny treasonous bellend. |
Ashes 17-18
We normally have a separate Ashes thread, to avoid Bung's general cricket thread from overspilling.
The Aussies have a couple of interesting choices to make. We have a couple to make too, though not sure they are interesting as much as desperate. Perhaps that's harsh.
Anyway, I'll kick off the thread with my prediction. 4-0 Oz. :(

Setting up a website
I'm looking to set up a website for my new business. What's the best way to go about this? Having a look online, the obvious and possibly most cost efficient option seems to be GoDaddy and then using Wordpress to build the site. Does that sound correct?
Short term I'm just looking to grab the domain and get the home page set up with a 'coming soon' message. Long term I'm hoping to have a website that says stuff about what I do, with a contact me page, etc. It doesn't need to be an amazing website, just not one that looks crap.
Any advice on this would be really appreciated :p

Dougie and Paddy 20th Nov Fans Q&A at Club
On 20th November Dougie Freedman and Paddy McCarthy will be doing a fans Q&A session in Speroni's at the club at 7.00pm. Bar open
This will be followed by the Trust AGM but the Q&A is open to everyone as we want anyone who is interested to be able to attend. Please do turn up as Dougie and Paddy have given up their evening and it would be good to have a good turnout for what should be a very good evening.
Non-trust members can leave before the boring bits of the AGM so no borings bits.
Can anyone interested either pm me or email cpst@hotmail.com just so we have an idea of numbers.

Where did we all used to have a kick about as a kid ?
Just seeing Bubbs' post on the 'Things that people think don't happen anymore, but still do' thread, got me thinking.
With all our common ground being Palace and more importantly a love of football (even you Penstone / Maestro ;) ) I'd love to know where we all used to have our mad and long winded kick about. For hours me and my brother would head up to Ashburton Park before returning home before dark. Also out on the hallowed turf of Beddingtons Richmond Green if we visited my Nans on a Saturday summer evening, before being regularly chased off by disapproving wombles shouting at us about the no ball games signs.
Reminisce away fellas, you never know we might have crossed paths in all these knockabouts as fresh faced kids.

Things that people think don't happen anymore, but still do.
Music charts...two things you knew as a kid at any given time: who was top of the league and who was No.1 and kids still do
Whistling workmen who still whistle now
Newspapers delivered to your door which still happens
Reading old woman's mags or readers digest in the Dr's waiting room which are now more updated ones, but still there.
Losing your friend/parent/partner whilst out at the shops
Broken down cars at the roadside with the bonnet open and clouds of steam coming out
Photo albums
Using a phone booth.
Penny for the guy...unwashed kids wheeling a guy about
Ugly musicians
Having pull out the choke button on the car at this time of year and then nurse it along slowly easing it back in while driving along, which I still do on my motorbike.
Fish man who still comes by in his van every other day
Going to the cinema and it being pitch black inside. When you came out the back at the end and stepped into the car park/high street your eyes would burn from the daylight.Which still happens if you go to the cinema during the day.
Having an Argos catalogue permanently in your magazine rack. Goldstar company with an incredible insight into the retail industry.
Calling your friend on the phone to ask them out to play, on the mobile phone.
Putting string up at Christmas to hang the Christmas cards.

Things that don't happen anymore
vendredi 10 novembre 2017
Do you ever find yourself suddenly recalling things that were once a part of our everyday lives but don't exist anymore? You know, like the classic white dog poo... (I'm fully aware this is very mumsnet btw but what the hell...it's the international weekend :S: )

Fitness
I don't know who is responsible but I've been impressed by fitness levels in the last few games. At the beginning of the season we were talking in terms of Cabaye only lasting 60 minutes a game, and in other games the team looked out on their feet after about 70 minutes. Cabaye is now a 90 minute man and the rest of the ream keep going until the end. Well done whoever it is.
Suggestion: Charly Musonda
Young winger at Chelsea whos getting increasingly frustrated at a lack of first time opportunity, surprise. He's looked good when he has featured and has the raw attributes of a traditional Palace winger the fans appreciate, he's quick and direct.
I appreciate we got big priorities to address in the window but I still feel a winger should be high on the agenda. When the inevitable happens and Zaha leaves we're left with only one top winger at the club, the squad already is thin as it is. If we end up having to sign 8+ players in one window it'll be a massive risk hoping they all gel and perform to the level needed instantly.
Thoughts?

2017 Election - Book Recommendation
I don't normally recommend books, but I feel that I have to make an exception. My son suggested that I might enjoy a new book by Tim Ross and Tom McTague called 'Betting the House' which is described on the cover as 'The Inside Story of the 2017 Election'.
He wasn't wrong. It's brilliantly written and researched and - even though I know how things turned out - absolutely gripping.
I would highly recommend this book to all of you who have any interest at all in politics ... and even if you don't the story of fallible people from all sides and all parties making human mistakes will surely keep you spellbound.

Five mind-blowing facts about what the UK looks like
This country is not full up - or its land taken over by concrete and housing but its for landowners and farming - 73% of land in England is farming by private landowners
To view the link you have to Register or Login
1: What proportion of the whole UK is classified as continuous urban fabric?
A: 0.1%
I am going to guess that was lower than you expected. Continuous urban fabric is actually a very rare land use in the UK. There is another category called discontinuous urban fabric, places where between 50% and 80% of the land surface is built on. Many of our urban areas are greener than you think.
2: What proportion of the UK is classified as discontinuous urban fabric?
A: 5.3%
You are probably suspecting that these figures are missing something, but a variety of different land use data sources come up with broadly the same picture.
3: The local authority with the greatest proportion of land devoted to golf is Woking. How much?
A: 11%
Overall, British golf courses are calculated to cover 1,256 sq km, an area roughly equivalent to the whole of Greater Manchester and, according to some estimates, just a little smaller than all the land covered by housing.
4: How much of the Lake District is lakes?
A: 3%
The psychological impact of a ghastly eyesore or a beautiful natural feature can lead us to assume it is physically bigger on the landscape than detailed mapping will reveal. Visitors to the Lake District National Park will focus on the glory of Windermere and Ullswater stretching into the distance and
imagine the landscape is predominantly lakes.
5: What proportion of the UK is peat bog?
A: 9.4%
Surprising though it may seem, there is almost 100 times as much peat bog in the UK as there is continuous urban fabric. Peat bog covers almost seven times as much land as all Britain's buildings.

Fixture Information Match Arrangements: Brighton & Hove Albion
Match Arrangements: Brighton & Hove Albion v Crystal Palace November 28th ko 19:45
Details will be updated when applicable
Supporters must bring the correct season ticket or membership card to verify their named tickets
Transport to Brighton
Brighton operate a system of free travel to the ground by train or Brighton and Hove buses within a zone south of Haywards Heath and between Worthing and Eastbourne. This will operate between 16:15 and midnight for supporters of both teams on production of a valid match ticket. Thus you will only need a train ticket to Haywards Heath if travelling to Falmer via Brighton or Lewes after 16:15. Fans may exit and then re-enter Brighton Station during these times. Journeys to Falmer take 10 minutes from both Brighton and Lewes Stations and trains run approximately every 10 minutes before the game. They are usually up to 10 carriages on match days which can now be fully accommodated on the extended Falmer platforms.
Bus routes 23,25,28,29 and 50 run from Churchill Square or The Levels area along the A270 Lewes Road to stops close to the ground and the nearby University Campus. Brighton and Hove buses from Tunbridge Wells, Uckfield, Ringmer and Lewes are also included in the free travel scheme.
Return coach travel at £17 is the easiest option and will depart from Selhurst Park at 15:00. Currently sold out but additional coaches may be added subject to demand at the box office. Pre-booked pick-ups will also be made at the Starbucks in Hooley just before the M23 however parking in this area is now very restricted. Brighton has a large coach park adjacent to the away section.
Parking
Supporters with valid match tickets may use one of the free Park and Ride sites. All sites are stewarded with controlled loading of buses which take about 15 mins to reach the ground but they can get caught in congestion near the ground on the A27.
Site 1 - Mill Road (Sat Nav: BN1 8ZF) is off the 3rd exit on the roundabout junction of the A23 and A27 on the approach to Brighton. This has 450 spaces but is usually full 1½ hours before kick-off.
Site 2 - Brighton University (Sat Nav: BN2 4AT) is off of the A23 one-way system on the A270 Lewes Road with 500 spaces is available from about 17:15 on evening games and at about 2½ miles is the nearest to the ground.
Site 3 - Brighton Racecourse (Sat Nav: BN2 9XZ) is the largest and quickest to clear with 700 spaces and has never yet been full for any game. Fans are advised to approach this site from the A23 one-way system in the centre of Brighton via Union Road and Elm Grove or via the A259 Marine Parade and Freshfield Road to avoid congestion on the A27 close to the ground and in the Woodingdean area. The roads between the Racecourse and ground are unsuitable for walking on evening games.
No street parking is available within 2½ miles of the ground as both the local Coldean or Mouslecoomb estates have resident parking only schemes. Fans using the park on my drive or visitor scratch card schemes in these areas are advised to carry copies of any email confirmations.
Spaces in the nearby Bridge car park off of the A270 are available in advance only to all fans for £15 but usually sell out quite early and this can take 90 mins to clear after games.
Drinking Prior to the Game
Supporters will be able to use their usual pubs and bars in Brighton or Lewes before the game but are advised that all pubs close to Brighton station will be strictly home fans only. Away friendly bars, including Yates and Wetherspoons, are located on West Street, which is about ½mile directly down from the station near Churchill Square and The Lanes. Most town centre pubs will have stewards so obviously anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and fans are also advised to allow at least 1¼ hours getting to the ground. Remember the ground is a 4 mile walk from the town centre!
Entry to ground
Turnstiles will be open 2 hours before kick-off. A cordon will be set up prior to the turnstiles to verify the named tickets against the correct season ticket or membership identification with non-ticket holders and Brighton supporters directed away from the segregated area by the away turnstiles. A rigorous body search will be made on all supporters. To avoid delays fans are asked to not bring any bags and carry as little as possible with any larger item including phones or glass cases held in their hands. Pyrotechnic and drug search dogs will also be employed. To avoid the obvious delays fans are encouraged to enter the ground as early as possible with full refreshment and bar facilities as well as TV screens available inside before the game. The continued sale of alcoholic drinks will depend on the actions of supporters on the concourse.
Restricted items, Banners and Flags
Only bags (including handbags) equivalent to A4 size or smaller will be allowed into the ground.
Only banners or flags (without sticks) smaller than 150cm x 150cm will be allowed into the ground.
Only 500ml plastic bottles of soft drinks or water will be allowed but the top may be removed.
No pyrotechnic devices, flagsticks, glass containers, or cans will be allowed
Only small folded, non-pointed umbrellas will be allowed.
No storage facilities will be available.
Accessible Facilities
There are 15 wheelchair spaces on elevated platforms and also some easy access seats which can be booked by phoning the CPFC Disability Liaison Officer, Pam Groves. Due to the Equalities Act supporters using these facilities must qualify under the same criteria as all other supporters. Priority parking locations are available at the Park and Ride sites with some buses having spaces for wheelchairs.
Abusive Chanting and Behaviour
Although this was discussed it was agreed to be a more general problem in football and not specific to these fixtures. However the documentary earlier this year by Gareth Thomas will throw a media spotlight on our actions at this game. There will be a large Police presence within the ground but I would encourage all fans to exert peer pressure on fellow supporters who may make homophobic chants or get involved in unruly behaviour. Actions at these games will affect the restrictions and potential numbers at future fixtures with Palace officials confirming that offences by season ticket holders could have consequences for attendance at future home games.
After the Game
All away supporters will be held back for a time whilst the immediate area is cleared. Police hope this will be a short period (my estimate is 20 mins) but it will depend on the match circumstances. Those Brighton fans who usually delay leaving the ground to avoid the initial queues may eventually be held back themselves. Refreshment and bar facilities will remain open after the game and fans can continue to use the seated areas or watch TV screens while they wait. Fans may wish to verify train times closer to the date as Southern usually run additional local services. While fans returning directly to London await their special train, others will be able to leave for trains to other destinations, proceed to the away coach park, join the relevant Park and Ride queues or depart for their car parks. Supporters who are returning on the special train will then be escorted to Falmer Station once it is clear just prior to departure.
Special Return Train
Southern will run a special train from Falmer Station. This will be 12 carriages long and capable of carrying almost 1000 people but supporters may have to walk through to the last carriages. This will probably run via Lewes where it will stop outside for a short time in order to reverse direction up the line to London Victoria. It will make three stops with exact times yet to be confirmed but my current estimates are: departing Falmer 22:20 and arriving Three Bridges 23:00; East Croydon 23:20; Clapham Junction 23:35 and Victoria 23.45. Transport Police will be expected to be on board but whatever the result please respect your fellow fans and do not damage or disrupt this service as everyone will be keen to get home.

Company Private Healthcare
Anyone use BUPA through their company? Being offered this for myself only but not sure what the cost to me will be. Whilst it is paid for by the company, i get taxed for it, right?
The Viz Thread
Some references to Viz Comic on a few threads (mostly by me!) but rather than derail existing threads, I thought the great comic deserved a thread of its own. What was your favourite character/strip?
Mine was a one off strip called "Arse Farm" where a farmer grew arses in fields. He had to fend off his arch rival who had a "Homeosexual Herb garden" (Basically a mobile trolley with a few herbs on it and what looked like the village people) He would attempt to get his lads into the Arse Farm so they could enjoy the crops!
So bloody surreal, the people who wrote it were definitely on something, a classic of Roger Irrelevant proportions. :p

I liked him. Have a couple of his books and always enjoyed him on the telly, particularly the recent one with his childish compatriot.

Trouble after spurs game at Blue Check pub
There are videos on you tube showing a group of Palace attacking spurs fans at the Blue Check pub after Sunday's game.
Not sure what started it but it goes on for about 2 minutes and some serious punches were thrown. The videos, taken on phones, clearly show the faces of those involved. So I have a feeling they will be getting a visit from plod real soon.
Sad that this seems to be returning to football and this shows why with todays technology the chances of getting caught are very high.

The Priti Patel Situation
So Priti Patel met with lobbyist and government ministers whilst on holiday in Israel and didn't tell anyone then lobbied the government here to send extra aid to Israel. She then allegedly lied about who she had told about the meetings and was forced to disclose this all, now it turns out that Theresa May might have known all along and number 10 might be complicit in breaches of the ministerial code and subsequently lied about said breaches to cover themselves.
Why do we always kick off towards the Whitehorse End?
Seeing as a home form has been chronic for the last few years, a change maybe an idea.
For the vast majority of home games we play towards the Whitehorse End in the first half, probably as a result of us coming out and lining up in front of the Holmesdale, and very few teams these days switching ends after the toss. Not saying it's a direct cause , but how many times have we sat there and the like of Bournemouth,Burnley , Swansea,West Ham, Sunderland have taken an early lead and we have gone in at half time with all to do? Seeing as these bottom of the table scraps are mostly low scoring matches, and the emphasis most managers put on the importance of the first goal, shouldn't we be doing everything to try and get that crucial first goal, particularly in the first half?
The point in hand is that we are more likely to get a crucial decision in our favour playing towards the Holmesdale with the crowd playing their part in maybe "influencing" match officials. The game against West Ham is a good example, where a legitimate penalty appeal against Zaha is turned down at the Whitehorse End with the game at 0-0, whereas we get the decision in Townsend's favour at the Holmesdale End in the second half , but are already 0-2 down.
Another factor is the influence the away fans have over the match officials when we are kicking towards the Whitehorse, with the fans almost directly on the back of the linesman and inevitably close on 3,000 making a lot more noise than the family Whitehorse End.
I would suggest that next few home games, and obviously depending on the toss, we try to kick towards the Holmesdale End in the first half.
Just a thought , but desperate times need cunning plans.

Rumour: Slimani - Jan 18
Rumoured here (To view the link you have to Register or Login) that both ourselves and Rennes are interested in bringing him in and he is determined to leave in January.
Also says Rennes do not have the money for a permanent deal, and we know we do not have the space for a loan.
Not sure he has done anything to 'prove' the fee Leicester paid so maybe we would be after a discount to buy him?

WW2 Discussion
Thought I'd start a specific thread, as this has been a refreshing off-topic debate recently within other threads.
Some questions raised thus far;
1) was Great Britain actually in danger of being successfully invaded in 1940?
2) who had the most powerful naval forces?
Feel free to widen the debate.
I'll start by adding my post re the Battle of Britain.

In-Exile is quite right that the Home Fleet was a significant concern of the Germans in preventing invasion. Without air superiority, an invasion fleet would have been seriously compromised. To begin, RAF fighters (Hurricanes and Spitfires) were being built in increasing numbers in 1940 and were at least the equivalent of the Bf109e & Bf110c. German intelligence underestimated GB fighter production badly. By Dunkirk, Fighter Command had also gained valuable experience in combat with the Luftwaffe, causing it significant losses. More importantly, the infrastructure set up by the 'Dowding System', was an incredibly effective strategy in winning air superiority and exacerbated the operational problems faced by Luftflottes 2 (South) and 5 (North). Intelligence was critical to our success. Enigma for strategic understanding of composition of Luftwaffe. Whilst in combat, the Dowding System operated thus - Chain Home (radar) and Observer Corps reports went to Bentley Priory, were distilled and communicated to Group HQs and thus Sector Stations. On the ground, Group Commanders would select Squadrons to attack respective targets. Sector Ops would guide fighters to intercept with a 75%+ chance of success throughout the Battle. In contrast, German intelligence was largely poor and they often went in blind or with limited info. They lost many a/c on recon missions that were easy prey for RAF. Ensuring the limited info was maintained. The operational and production strengths of the RAF though, were undermined by poorer, inflexible tactics. The Germans were far superior in that regard (as, was often the case in other Arms too). A German mistake was believing the Dowding System was as inflexible and rigid as RAF tactical doctrine. It wasn't. One reason why RAF tactics were so poor was that they expected bombers over GB, not fighters too. Outdated thinking from '30s. Tight 'vic 3' formation etc ('rows of idiots' according to LW pilots) and easy prey for LW 'finger four' of x2 pairs. RAF doctrine was straight jacket like in comparison to flexibility of LW combat style. Squadron Leader Sailor Malan copied the LW formations that was adopted more widely by the RAF, so imitation and flattery etc helped reduce a key strength of the LW Geschwader. Other well known issues for the LW other than poor intelligence and inferior a/c production was the loss of aircrew over the UK and Channel. The RAF lost over 200 pilots in the Channel, let alone German losses. Summary of BoB phases; 1) Kanalkampf (Channel Battles) 10 Jul - 11 Aug 2) Adlerangriff (Eagle Attack vs coastal airfields) 12 Aug - 23 Aug 3) Phase 3 interior airfields attacked 24 Aug - 06 Sep 4)* Phase 4 attacks switch to towns and cities 07 Sep onwards *The period 13-19 September saw Bomber Command sink 200+ invasion barges. By mid August the LW had reviewed the Battle and withdrew JU87s and reduced Bf110s. A clear sign of RAF fighter superiority. (Luftflotte 5 (North) were mauled around this time and did not re-appear in strength after this.) That's why Phase 3 had the most ferocious attacks against our airfields, as the LW had to break Fighter Command and the integrity of the Dowding System. The key element to defeat was the supply of RAF fighter pilots. Hence, newly trained guys had as little as 9 hours flying time with no combat training. Foreign pilots and transfers from Coastal Command and Fleet Air Arm helped the bloodflow of men. A/c production and the quality of its machines meant this we were never in danger of being second to the LW in this regard. It was the one real opportunity for the LW, but given the previous detail provided, this was increasingly unlikely to succeed. So, in hindsight, no, we were never really in danger of German invasion, but at the time, and given Dunkirk, it's understandable it was a concern. |
