I'm ready to be shot down in flames, but this is the sort of signing we should look to make in the summer, especially if Villa go down. He's 24 so a good age. He is probably on about £50,000 a week, which considering we were in for Gomis who is on about £60,000 a week should not prove prohibitive. He has had problems with injuries, and his stock has fallen - he is not scoring the goals that he did in his first season. He's quick, he's a good runner, he's good in the air and he can finish. He's basically got all the attributes needed for a lone striker. At the moment, we don't have a striker who can play that role going forward. Murray is too slow and old to be a long term solution, Sanogo will go back to Arsenal and Gayle can't lead the line on his own.
Maybe I'm starting the thread too early, but my point is clear: in the summer we will need ONE top quality lone striker to take us to the next level. We have top quality players for every position, and some of the Premiership's finest for their position. If we can finish mid table again, which is not impossible, we are established in the Premiership. We have a top class manager who has affinity for the club, and the best fans. As Parish has alluded to, bar the top 5 or 6 there's no reason we can't compete with the rest. We are a London club, and we have a very good squad. But I feel we are missing this one player who can take us to the next level.
Gomis and Gestede are decent enough, but they won't push us up the table. They scream 'mid table'. If we want to start competing for Europe, and it is not as outlandish as it seems, we will need to attract one good striker in the next window. Sure, if the scouts identify Babacar or someone else as having the potential to be one of the Premiership's best strikers then let's go for him. But this is serious now. We've got strength in depth everywhere. In the summer we need just ONE top quality lone striker and we can potentially challenge for Europe for the next 5 years! Personally I'd offer £20m for Benteke in the summer and that would be it. Yes, it's a lot of money, but with £100m a season coming in we should be able to afford it. With such a physical and pacy side, built around Bolasie, Jedinak, Chamakh and Zaha we can go on to great things. But we will need this marquee signing to make it happen. Spending £30m on 5 or 6 average Premiership players won't do it. We need ONE top quality signing. A real star. We are so lucky to have this squad of players. Let's get the best out of them and get a long term fix to our problem up front. Believe we can do it. COYP
