Palace U18s hosted league leaders Brentford this morning in a Category 2 South U18 league fixture at the Palace training ground as they chased a top 2 finish in order to get into the end of season play offs with the top 2 in the North section to establish the overall champion side.
The Palace line-up was:
GK Brad Comins
RB Ryan King-Elliott
LB Jason Akiotu (Olly ODwyer)
CB Ben Wynter
CB Jahmal Howlett-Mundle
LM Aaron Bissaka
CM Will Hoare
CM Spencer Forte (Olly Bennett)
AM Michael Phillips
RM Elliot List (Andre Coker)
CF Corrie Andrews
2 mins Hoare clips thru ball over the defence but Brentford keeper Tzanev rushes off line and heads clear just before Andrews arrives
9 mins Forte conceded FK on edge of own box shot is deflected and loops into arms of Comins
21 mins GOAL nice approach plays by Brentford ends with their number 11 lobbing the ball over Comins from 14 yards out
25 mins Hoare swings over a FK from wide left, keeper Tzanev drops it badly and LB just beats Andrews to ball and clears
29 mins good approach play again by Brentford looks to have out Jatta in on goal but his shot is blocked by a last gasp tackle
33 mins Andrews and List link up well wide right and clever back heel leads to a foul and FK from which an Andrews header is saved at full length by Tzanev
36 mins driving run by Brentford CM James Ferry is only stopped in area by good Howlett-Mundel tackle
41 mins good run forward by Akiotu and does stepover to beat full back and cross almost leads to a tap in for Andrews
42 mins Brentford break and are in on goal in inside right channel and Comins produces a great tip over save from strong shot
47 mins chance for Brentford as Zain Westbrooke has shooting chance from which he lobs Comins but ball goes over bar
52 mins nice one two on edge of Palace pen area puts Brentford CF Bradley Clayton in on goal but Comins rushes out and saves with his feet
55 mins Jatta gets on end of right wing Brentford cross and crashes effort against crossbar from 6 yards out
57 mins clever play by JBA sets Andrews away but his shot from inside left channel is saved by Tzanev at his near post with his feet
62 mins Akiotu burst forward but sees long range shot fly wide of far post
75 mins good full length Comins save low to his left from long range effort by Westbrooke
80 mins surging run & cross by King-Elliott almost creates good shooting chance for Bennett
82 mins Brentford mess up 3 on 1 breakaway and ends with shot wide
85 mins Comins saves point blank from Ferry with his feet
A tough game for Palace against a big, strong physical Brentford side who were not adverse to using a tactical foul to stop game whenever the more fleet of foot Palace side looked like breaking. It was easy to see why Brentford were top of the league as they also played some nice football. The Palace lads did not shy away from the physical challenge but they were outpowered in midfield and in attacking areas.
Whole of Palace back 4 played well. Howlett-Mundle and Wynter excelled themselves. Akiotu was his usual solid self. King-Elliott at RB was my joint Palace MOM. Clever on ball going forward and won almost every tackle in defence and was clever when left outnumbered. Comins in goal was other joint Palace MOM. Heroic effort to keep score to one and made several full length diving saves and stopped 3 close range efforts.
Not a day when Palace offered much threat going forwards.
