RANT WARNING
I went to Spurs last night, and I must confess, I enjoyed the razzmatazz. Being in a world class new stadium for the first match was, I thought, pretty cool. I didn't have any issue with the operatics, the fancy lights, the weird beer pouring system or the fireworks.
I managed to get tickets - as did a lot of my family and friends who have been going to away matches up and down the years, because we had enough points.
Here's the thing though - I've been to two away matches this season, Spurs being one of them (Fulham the other).
I am, I guess, the definition of an away game tourist.
I'm extraordinarily grateful that myself and those I have been going with for years - or at least, in years gone by - qualified for a ticket. But it doesn't feel right.
Not by a long shot.
I was stood there in my ******* suit (having come straight from work) & scarf looking around at those around me, and I couldn't see a single person under 30. Not anywhere. I'm not for a second suggesting that age has anything to do with how well you support the team, but under the current point system, how one earth will the next generation of fans come through for the big away games?
It isn't right that I have more points than someone who is 21, just by virtue of the fact that I've been alive longer and have more of a disposable income at half time at Selhurst. There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of Palace fans who couldn't be there last night and who, quite frankly, would've done a better job of making noise and supporting the team.
And so to the topic of the post. The points system has to change.
It CANNOT BE RIGHT that I get a ticket for Spurs over someone that has been to several away matches this season. I've been a long time supporter of everything Steve P does, but it's impossible to defend the points system anymore.
So what about this;
- Away match points are awarded based on the cost of the away coach*
- On 1st July every year, EVERYONE forfeits 20% of all their points
We can't go on having people like me, with a history of going to many matches several years ago, getting priority over the next gen of Palace fans.
All those in favour sign below.
