I was shown an 1895 OS map of South Croydon yesterday . Purley Oaks was just fields, the Brighton Road and the railways. For some reason I was expecting to see an oak wood in the area but there was none.
Anyone know how Purley Oaks got its name? Was it because of the Royal Oak Pub? The station was not opened until the turn of the century.
