Palace U18s 4-2 Millwall U18s

dimanche 1 février 2015

Palace U18s hosted Colchester in a Category 2 U18 league fixture on a very cold, damp overcast morning at the Palace training ground hoping to achieve their 7th consecutive league win.

I managed a quick chat with some of the Millwall parents watching who were all equally disparaging about their current first team manager Mr. Holloway!!!

The Palace line-up was:

GK Brad Comins

RB Ryan King-Elliott (Olly Bennett)

LB Jason Akiotu

CB Ben Wynter

CB Jahmal Howlett-Mundle

LM Aaron Bissaka

CM Will Hoare

CM Spencer Forte (Dan Hogan)

AM Michael Phillips

RM Elliot List (Andre Coker)

CF Corrie Andrews

Both team started the game determinedly and it hard fought throughout. Initially there were no chances on gaol although it did take a good tackle by Forte on the edge of his own area to thwart a dribble by the Wall left winger which had already seen him go passed 2 men.

11 mins – GOAL – Palace win a FK about half way inside the Wall half slightly out to the right. Will Hoare takes it and it sails over the keeper and dips under the bar at the far post. Was it a cross or a shot? Will looked slightly embarrassed while celebrating so we will have to conclude it was an attempted cross.

17 mins – Wall’s excellent 16 yr old LB gets forward well and screws a cross shot well wide.

22 mins – Palace are awarded a FK in a dangerous position centrally just outside of the pen area. Andrews shoots low into the wall. It rebounds out to King-Elliott whose shot looks goalbound but gets blocked on its way towards bottom corner.

Game continues to be close and hard fought for the reminder of the first half. List does appear to be in on goal for Palace but the keeper is quick off his line and blocks at List’s feet and just before HT the Millwall LB fires a hard low cross the flies all way across the Palace box without anybody getting a touch on it.

50 mins – GOAL – The ball is played out to the left to Bissaka and he advances to edge of area and shoots a low left foot shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net.

57 mins – Wall’s CF misses a good chance when he heads over from a left wing cross.

62 mins – Wall’s RW shows good pace and skills to get down the right wing but again his cross is headed over by a Wall forward.

65 mins – GOAL – Wall get the goal they have been threatening. A FK wide left is swung over and their CB gets up well ahead of Palace keeper Comins to head home.

70 mins – Comins makes a spectacular full length save as he flings himself to his right to push away a long range pile driver.

72 mins – Phillips gets onto end of a Palace corner from the right and bullets a header from 14 yards out narrowly wide.

84 mins – GOAL – good work from Andrews to get to byline on the left and cut a low cross back that the onrushing Bennett meets with a neat low side foot finish.

85 mins – Wall almost respond immediately when their CF slices horribly wide from only 4 yards out as he meets a cross from the left.

88 mins – GOAL – Palace break and ball falls to Bissaka on the right just inside the area and he finishes expertly with a nice right foot finish from 15 yards out across the keeper.

Injury Time – GOAL – Wall get a FK just on right hand edge pf pen area. Their LB takes the FK Ronaldo style where he hits the valve and the consequent dip and swerve confuses Comins as ball falls into far corner of net.

A hard fought 4-2 win for Palace. Their 7th in a row in the league lifts them (depending on other results yesterday) up to 2nd or 3rd in their division. They are closing in fast on the leaders Brentford and have game in hand. They look well placed to finish in the Top 2 and qualify for the end of season play offs if they can keep this run going. Charlton are nip and tuck with Palace and have a strong team and a game in hand and Cardiff are doing OK. So it’s starting to look like a 4 way battle for the Top 2 places.

The Palace defence was solid and resolute. King-Elliott hardly made a mistake and was a threat going forward throughout. Wynter and H-M won most stuff in the air and both looked physically strong. Akiotu has been excellent all season but had a slightly quitter game than usual.

Comins came in for Pain in goal and made one really good full length diving save. Like most keeper of his age, they don’t yet have the physicality to come and dominate whole box and clear people out of the way to take crosses which explains why he didn’t quite get to ball first for the Wall 1st goal. But that’s usual for lads of his age and dominating in the air usually comes a bit later.

Hoare and Forte were excellent in CM. Both are technical ball players and they retained the ball well and were patient in rotating the ball from side to side when there was no obvious ball on to go forward. Was nice to see a Palace side so good at retaining possession! Dan Hogan continued this when he replaced Forte who did well to last so long after being out for a long period due to an injury.

List has had a really good season so far but did not see the ball as much as in recent games and he was replaced by Andre Coker early in the 2nd half. Palace are lucky to have 3 good wingers in this age group. Bissaka worked hard going forward and chasing back and his defending and he deserved his 2 goals which were both good finishes as they were not easy chances.

Michael Phillips (who has already played at CB and in Cent Mid this season) played in a new advanced attacking midfield role just behind the CF. He was able to show of some nice touches and it was a compliment to him that he did not look out of place at all in his new role. He is probably the player of the season so far for the U18s.

Corrie Andrews played the lone CF role and was getting frustrated a bit in 1st half at lack of opportunities to get on the ball. But he got his reward in 2nd half when game opened up and his hard work and link up play created a couple of the goals.

Was the first time I have seen Dan Hogan play as he has had a few injuries and has played mainly in away games so far this season. It was a compliment to him that he replaced Forte who had played really well seamlessly in an unfamiliar position for him of centre mid. He looked equally at home later when he moved to RB which I believe is a more natural role for him.

Andre Coker did not receive enough of the ball after coming on to be able to show his Zaha like repertoire of skills and flicks. Olly Bennett was busy after he came on in midfield and finished expertly for his goal.
