What an amazing game!!!

Dozens of fanzines, free to collector

Wasn't sure where to post this, so apologies to the mods if they need to move it.

I've been having a clear out but I can't bring myself to just pulp my unwanted Palace fanzines.

If anyone should want these they can collect from either Tunbridge Wells (9-5 weekdays) or Crowborough (weekday evenings or weekends). Hope they find a happy home as there's loads of Palace history here, all from the viewpoint of fans.

I've decided to keep my Eagle Eyes, but here's a list of what is available:

Palace Echo; 1-7, 9-14, 20-65, 67-75 and 77 (sixty-eight issues in total).

One More Point; 1-6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15, 16, 19-32, 34-56, 58 and 59 (fifty-one issues in total).

Eastern Eagles; 5-11 and 14 (eight issues in total).

PM me if interested.

Sannino resigns from Watford

What's gone on here then? Currently 2nd and Deeney signed a new deal in the week.

New words in daft languages. How ?

Currently in Dublin Airport and all the signs are in English and Irish. Now the Irish word for photography is ' Ghrianghrafadoireacht' . How on earth did they arrive at that ? Is there some sort of official body whose job is to make up new words as stuff gets invented ?

Rumour: Ludovic Obtaniak

Just read that he's coming on a year's loan from Werder Bremen. French midfielder, capped by Poland. It's in the Imdependent.

H. Bright Taddy Card

Does anyone have one?

Trying to see if he is the same as John Bright mentioned in The Complete Record.

If anyone has one, could you scan it and post it up here. Would like to compare with John Bright and see if it is one and the same player.

Many thanks

Match Updates: Leicester v Arsenal

Reckon this might be the first upset of the season. Obviously an Arsenal win would be good for us but it's nice to see the written-off teams beat the big clubs.

Suggestion: Emmanuel Gigliotti

Wants a transfer to the Prem. Currently playing in Argentina. Could be a very good Murray replacement.

Just out of curiosity...

Just out of curiosity, before I get accused of being a potential racist ...

Interested to know who we consider to be the last white "flair" player/winger at Palace? All our current ones seem to be non-white. (not a bad thing!!)

I'm thinking Tommy Black?! (who was obviously white lol) ... can't be that far back surely?

All the players of old like Hilaire, Wright, Bright and more recently Gray, Routledge, Soares, McAnuff, Moses, Zaha, Bolasie, Sinclair (loan), Puncheon, Cadogan, Djilali etc.

Is there an obvious player I've missed?

Discussion: Gayle and Zaha up front?

Is a good old 442 in our future?

Discussion: Who would be your choice; Diame/McArthur/Cork

I know we have separate threads for these as rumours but is be interested to see via a poll who is most favourable...

Scott Dann megathread

Deserves his own thread. The guy oozes class and to think I hoped at best he'd be back up to Gabbidon.

Discussion: Transfer Deadline Day

Tomorrow is the big day! What does everyone think we need? I reckon we need two LB's, a CM and a CB in that order. I'll update this post tommorow with more Deadline Day things (rumours, blogs, etc).

Rumour: Momo Diame

Sunday People saying we have beaten QPR to sign him for West Ham.

Crystal Palace are set to beat QPR to the signing of West Ham midfielder Momo Diame, the Sunday People say.

Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has long been keen to bring in Diame but it is claimed that Eagles boss Neil Warnock has won the race to sign him. Hull were also reported to be interested.

All-out attack versus defensive pragmatism

In one game against Newcastle we've already seen a hint of a difference between the Pulis/Millen defensive setup and Warnock's more attack minded play. At 2-1 up and even 2-2 I thought we'd hold the game and there was no chance of attacking substitutions.

However, Zaha and Murray coming on for Chamakh and Bolasie really show where Warnock's intentions lie. Previously at that stage of a game I'm sure we'd have been more likely to sacrifice the injured forwards for more defensive players.

It turned out alright in the end with that last gasp wonder goal from Wilf and the romantic in me loves that. But part of me would also have seen him stay on the bench and someone like Stuart O'Keefe helping to see out a 2-1 win or 2-2 draw.

Bearing in mind the season is still young, how should we best go about staying up. Defence at all costs or try to out score the opposition?

Phil Neville what a w*****

On Zaha "Didn't quite have that big club mentality."

1)Your not a big club anymore, your in the bottom half.

2) If you and your mate moyes weren't such sh@@ coaches you might have got the best out of him.

Oh and your just a sh** Alan Hansen.

Is anyone watching? I'm not ashamed to say that Iike this programme and for the first programme of the series its very good. Lots of comedy. I know a lot on here will say they hate this programme but there is a reason it is watched by millions.

Alan Pardew

I was always a fan of Alan Pardew particularly as he was an ex Palace player albeit not a very good one IMO. I could even excuse his punch up on the touch line. However, his wingeing and complaining about today's game with regards to Palace's persistent time wasting and the added time is pathetic and is an attempt to cover up his shortcomings as a manager. Thank goodness we have not got him as a manager.

QPR crowd today

Just had a look at there crowd today only 17000(the same as Fulham)and I bet there was at least 2500 sunderland fans there.

And they think they are a bigger club than us. Clueless idiots.

Suggested Team and Formation For: Burnley (home)

------------------Speroni-------------------------

Kelly-----Dann----------Delaney-------Ward

-----------Jedinak-------Ledley------------------

Puncheon--------Murray------------Zaha

--------------------Gayle--------------------------

This is assuming Ledley, and Gayle are fit, and Chamakh is not, and no new signings. Think Kelly deserves a chance at right back as he played well vs Arsenal and West Ham there. Dann and Delaney by far our best centre back partnership. Important they both stay fit. Ward to left back, basically because I don't think there is a better left back out there that we can realistically attract, even if Ward is left-footed. Ledley and Jedinak pick themselves barring new arrivals. Gayle deserves another chance to improve his all-round game after another well-taken goal. Zaha in for Bolasie who has been poor all season. Chamakh in hole if fit. Big game.

Sky game of the day?

Surely we'll get the full slot at 8pm?

Today's Injuries

Do we know how bad they are?

Match Updates: Everton v Chelsea

2-0 Chelsea already. WTF is up with Everton this season?

The chosen one

Did we play badly today?

I watched the game on a poor quality stream and I thought we looked alright. In fact, very similar to last season. Fast on the counter.

We defended very poorly for the goals, but apart from that I thought we looked ok. When we went 3-2 down I text my mate and said that we deserved a point.

The reason I ask is that from having a quick scan on the Live thread, it seems quite a few thought that we weren't up to much today. So yeah, good or bad performance?

Player Ratings And Reviews: Newcastle 3 - 3 Palace

The emotions of this game epitomizes Palace as a whole. Rollercoaster.

Speroni - 5.5 Has not yet regained his late season form yet. Think he should have done better with the first, and also came out for a ball or two unsuccessfully. Little he could do with last two goals.

Marriapa - 5.5 Always looked very exposed down his side. The yellow card didn't help as he was forced to back off. Let the teenager go by him far too easily for their third.

Dann - 8 I just don't have enough superlatives to lay on this guy. It's his composure and tactical positioning that makes him next class. Hardly a foot wrong all day.

Delaney - 7 Not as assured as Dann, but did the job. Should retain his spot unless we get another player in.

Kelly 6 - His awful clearance for the first knocks him down. Not comfortable going forward except for one very good shot. Positioning was poor at times as well but overall solid defensively. First time I thought CB may be his best position. Future Dann partner?

Ward 7 - Warnock made a bold move moving him to midfield. May have been better to have Guedioura there to allow Ward to shore up the back. Decent overall, including one brilliant run at the end.

Jedinak 7 - Passing woeful as usual, but great in air and in the tackle. Typical.

Puncheon 7 - Desire was there for all to see. That may have resulted in giving up alot of fouls, but while it wasn't his best game, a few moments of class and the great goal reminded everyone what he's capable of.

Bolasie 5.5 - Again it just hasn't clicked for him so far this season. Once Wilf came on, it became even more obvious what we have been missing from our wingers so far this year.

Chamakh 7.5 - He and Dann have been our best players so far this year. Pure class. Great work rate. His footballing brain is at a different level and instrumental in our first goal.

Gayle 7 - Nice finish for the first even if it was at point blank range. Had difficulties in link up play, but improved significantly in second half. Should retain his spot up front.

Bench:

Campbell - 5.5 He actually was very solid but he should have stayed at the post for their second goal. Costly.

Zaha - 8 My goodness am I buzzing that he's back. Electric. Could have had a hatrick. Onside for the goal disallowed. Wasteful a few times, but far outweighed by moments of brilliance. Transformed the offense. Jury still out on defensive side of his game.

Murray - N/A

What a difference a week makes.

What a difference a week makes.

This time last week, no manager, no signings, playing bad football, no confidence. Zombies imminent and now .... one week later ...

Win convincingly with our best striker in the Cup, get a manager, get Wilf home, play a pretty decent 2nd half with some good football and score a deserved last minute equaliser from Wilf to get off the mark.

Talk about ups and downs! :p

Does Neil Warnock want to back the academy? If so, Joniesta starts.

Warnock's gone on record as saying he loves our academy, and has given 13+ academy products their debuts. Fine. He's also brought back Wilf, which is to his credit. However, let's see him back up his vision.

Too many managers have lacked the bottle to play little Jonny Williams. Even Holloway, noted for his attacking style, lacked the guts to play him on a regular basis. But it's no good just leaving a mega talent on the bench because of his size. Yes, he's had injury problems; yes, Pulis was never going to play him. But ask yourself this Neil: is Joniesta really inferior to O'keefe, Bannan, Guedioura etc?

In the absence of Ledley or a new midfield signing I can't see why now wouldn't be an ideal opportunity to give him a chance. Warnock, back up your words. We know that a lot of our academy products are some way off being first team material. But at least show them the route to the first-team is not automatically cut off now we are in the Premiership. Jonny Williams is fit. Jonny Williams is good enough. Jonny Williams can tackle and defend despite his size. Jonny Williams should finally get a chance to play.

Who do you want to win? Brighton or Charlton?

No sitting on the fence here. Just curious to see peoples opinions.

I think that it would be a good idea to have the Club Ticket Office telephone number printed on the front of membership cards.

I'm just about to purchase some match tickets and I dislike doing it online, with my preference being to just pick up the phone. I know that it isn't difficult to go to the main website to get the number, but I have my card in my hand, which is normally stored in my wallet, so wouldn't it be even easier if the number was listed on the card and I could call up and regardless if whether or not I was near a PC/Laptop/Smart device etc?

Organ donation

I was having a chat with colleagues at work about being an organ donor, and there seems to be a mixed bag of opinions on it.

Personally, it's perverse to me that you wouldn't be on the register, why wouldn't you improve or save a life when you are dead?

I understand some people have religious considerations, but even then, what sort of a religion wouldn't look at your decision favourably?

In my humble opinion, as soon as you have a birth certificate, you should be on the organ donor list, your parents can then chose to opt you out if you want.

When you reach 16, 18, 21 or whatever, you are automatically re-enrolled, and you then have the opportunity opt out again if you want to.

In an age where people are living longer, supplies are running short and research is increasing, it seem strange that the emphasis is on people not being donors, rather than being donors.

What do the BBS think?

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic turned down head coach role at EPL club Crystal Palace

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Tom Smithies Football Editor

From: The Daily Telegraph

August 28, 2014 9:30PM

WANDERERS boss Tony Popovic masterminded his side’s remarkable Asian Champions League victory on Wednesday after turning down the chance to become head coach of Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Following Western Sydney’s defeat of Guangzhou Evergrande to reach the ACL semi-finals, The Daily Telegraph has learned that Popovic was approached by a trusted intermediary late last week about returning to the south London club where he spent years as a player and assistant coach.

It’s understood that though Popovic was flattered by the approach, he responded that as a contracted coach, any approach had to be made to Western Sydney first.

Sources in the UK say that in a subsequent conversation, it was made clear that Popovic’s commitment to taking the Palace role was essential before any formal approach was made to Western Sydney.

In response Popovic ruled himself out of the Palace job on Sunday, content to continue leading Western Sydney’s astonishing journey from formation to the upper levels of Asian football.

That will continue in just under three weeks with a semi-final against FC Seoul over two legs, intensifying the spotlight on Popovic.

Only 10 days ago, on the eve of the first leg against Guangzhou, Popovic made clear he had had no official approach from Palace, and wished his old club “good luck” in their search for a manager.

At that stage Palace were on the verge of appointing former Cardiff boss Malky Mackay — until last Wednesday, when a series of offensive text messages alleged to have been sent by him at Cardiff were revealed by the UK media.

Finally two days ago Palace appointed Neil Warnock for his second spell at the club, having been spurned by a series of candidates including Popovic and ex-Spurs boss Tim Sherwood.

It had been assumed that Popovic would find it hard to refuse an approach from Palace, where he was centreback and captain from 2001-2006.

In 2011 he returned to the club as No 2 to Dougie Freedman, a former Palace teammate appointed to the manager’s role.

That partnership was only broken up when Football Federation Australia approached Popovic to be the foundation coach of their new club, on a salary of $400,000 a year, a role that Popovic agonised over before accepting.

Ultimately it is seen as inevitable within the Wanderers that his record in guiding the team to two grand finals and a premier’s plate in two years — and now the semi-finals of the ACL — will attract interest from overseas.

The former Socceroo is believed to have mapped an ideal career path as a coach that would take in a spell in Asia before moving to Europe.

Earlier this year he was approached by English side Norwich to succeed Chris Hughton as well as Korean side Ulsan Hyundai, but similarly knocked back both approaches.

Since Western Sydney changed ownership he is said to have forged a strong relationship with new chairman Paul Lederer, who accompanied the team to China for Wednesday’s game.

Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Western Sydney will keep all of their prize money, with Football Federation Australia having scrapped previous arrangements to split ACL winnings among all A-League clubs.

Getting to the semi-finals has earned the club $120,000, and reaching the final would raise that to $750,000 as runners up or $1.5m as winners.

What happens to players after release - Gavin Heeroo

Article on BBC on players lives after they have been released from their clubs and out of football. Article shows Gavin Heeroo who developed a gambling addiction

To view the link you have to Register or Login

'I was gambling £20,000 in a single bet'

Midfielder Gavin Heeroo was a trainee on the books of Crystal Palace. After being released in 2004, he developed a gambling addiction. He conquered his betting habit with the help of the Sporting Chance clinic and now runs his own business.

Gavin Heeroo pictured in his time at Crystal Palace (left), and in his current life as a fitness instructor

Heeroo dreamed of making it at Crystal Palace but ended up launching his own fitness business

Heeroo left school at 16 and signed for Crystal Palace as a trainee. Among his team-mates in the Eagles youth team were Wayne Routledge, now at Swansea, and Ben Watson, who scored the winner in the 2013 FA Cup final for Wigan against Manchester City. Heeroo's career was not destined to have such a fairytale ending.

"I loved every minute of it," says Heeroo, who grew up on the notoriously tough Broadwater Farm estate in Tottenham, north London. "I did train hard, but I wasn't as focused as I could have been. Being a London boy didn't help - you have all the temptations on your doorstep. I got caught up in the lifestyle."

Heeroo says he was relieved when he was let go by the club after two years.

"Iain Dowie called me into his office and told me I needed to go and play football," Heeroo remembers. "I wasn't devastated at all - I felt like a weight had been lifted. Iain was great but the club didn't give me any support."

Heeroo had offers from League clubs, but joined then-Conference National side Grays Athletic in an effort to hang on to his flashy lifestyle.

"I always saw professional football as a job, like any other industry," he explains. "Sometimes you can get paid more at a lower level than you can in the higher divisions. It might not be a great move for your career, but you need the income. I had a flat and a car. I was still hooked on the lifestyle."

In hindsight, Heeroo admits, dropping out of the Football League was a mistake.

"I dropped too low," he says. "When you're in the lower leagues it's hard to get noticed; it's hard to get out. It's very difficult. You have been so pampered and then suddenly you have to clean your own kit."

"It's not so much the money that you're hooked on as the buzz," he explains. "I was trying to replicate the adrenalin rush. At one stage I was gambling £10,000 or £20,000 in a single bet. I was betting more than I could afford to lose. It's a scary place to be."

Heeroo conquered his addiction with the help of Sporting Chance, the clinic founded by former Arsenal captain - and fellow one-time gambling addict - Tony Adams.

With his football career waning, Heeroo decided to start his own fitness business with friend and former Palace team-mate Dougie Freedman, the current Bolton boss who also managed the Eagles.

"I did a fitness course," he says. "I'd always enjoyed keeping myself fit and I found that I really loved helping other people to achieve their goals."

Now Heeroo is using his company, Focus Fitness, to rescue other young footballers, by hiring ex-players to run personal-training sessions.

As I explained in my reply - it's not stepping on our toes but on our woes: one less job to do if you start the thread.

Anyway, ROB has given us the trinity of score, scorers and attendance; time for you to do the same. Given the League cup draw, this game now has some extra bite too.

Warnock on talk sport breakfast this morning

mercredi 27 août 2014

Warnock is on talk sport breakfast this Thursday morning

Onwards ... together!!

Right... so now we have a manager ... and a 3-0 victory.

Time to regroup, get behind the team and push for safety in the 2nd yr.

Hasn't been the start any of us wanted, and might not be the manager many of us wanted, but we are where we are... and we are Palace - manager, players and fans.

1st stop - upsetting the geordies.

Lorries with doors open

On a long drive today, I pulled into a couple of lay-bys on the A46 to stretch my legs. Parked in both of them were two haulage trucks. All 4 had one of the doors on the back of the trailer open. I looked into one, it was empty.

Intrigued me all the way home, so my question is (and I may have answered it with my suggestion)... Why park up with the door open? Is it to show there is nothing worth nicking?

Should really have knocked on the driver's door, but didn't want to wake him up if he was resting.

Anyone had problems with their printing on new kit??

My son was overjoyed to get his new Palace kit as the weekend, however before it's even been washed one of the letters in his name on the back of his shirt is starting to peel off! Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems??

Also been looking for a club shop email address to email them for advice on the matter but can't find one, I'm presuming it might have changed since last year so can anyone point me in the right direction??

S Bucuresti v Ludogrets

Has anybody else just watched that?

Never seen anything like it!

2 minutes until the end of extra time and Ludo get their goalkeeper sent off and they've used up all their subs. The centre half goes into goal and seconds later the whistle blows for full time and penalties.

He steps up and fires the first one in for his side, them calmly walks between the posts to take up his next duty. Misses the first then brilliantly saves the second!

It goes to sudden death, Steau step up to take theirs and this guy doesn't just save or parry it, he clean catches it!

Never witnessed a more exciting finish. Ludogorets go through for the first time in their history.

Slug orgies

On my run the other day I saw a cluster of slugs on the pavement with about five of them in a star shape all touching each other at the centre of the star. Never seen anything like it before. Quite weird.

Then I saw about four more of these clusters, although these were more bundles than a star shape.

What the hell was going on? Is there some reason for slugs to congregate in this way or have I discovered the local slug dogging area?

Amazon to deliver packages by drone

Now we're really living in the err, future.

Be quite a selling point, the 30 minute delivery, if they can be the first to get it going. Plus I can see loads of people ordering stuff from them just to see a drone delivery!

But if this took off (see what I did there) with loads of companies offering it then our already busy air space would be carnage.

Super cool though.

That is all.

Moving on - back to the football

Right then - manager drama over - back to the football.

Ahhhh, while typing the Zaha loan deal has emerged - so no one will read it but . . .

Normal caveats about stats - i.e. - that they help you understand where to look, and that they require interpretation within context.

Just looked at our passing stats over the first 2 games. I have averaged out the passing volume stats to an average per game. The % is simply that.

First of all the numbers

Failed passes - average per game

Jedinak.......17

Chamakh.....14

Puncheon....10

Speroni.......10

Bannan.......10

Ledley........9

Ward..........7

Hangeland...6

Delaney......6

Kelly..........5

Bolasie.......4

Dann..........3

O'Keefe......3

Gayle.........1

Campbell.....0

Murray.......0

Williams J....0

I don't think it's that much of a shock who is giving the ball away. Jedi has continued where he left off last season. Chamakh stats are worse over these 2 games. Someone in that role typically will lose the ball more as they are trying to set up attacks or holding up the ball under pressure. But during the 2 games he is likely doing too much and its impacting the stats at least.

Kelly is also worthy of note because although he has made 10 bad passes (5 ave) they were all in the first game. None at all against West Ham :-)

So that's one side of it - who is giving the ball away.

On the other side - who is completing our successful passes

Successful passes - ave per game

Jedinak.......34

Chamakh.....31

Ward..........19

Bannan.......19

Ledley........18

Kelly..........18

Hangeland...13

O'Keefe......13

Bolasie.......12

Campbell.....9

Williams J....8

Puncheon 8

Delaney 7

Dann 5

Speroni 5

Gayle 3

Murray 2

Again not too many surprises. Might have hoped for a better total passes from Bolasie maybe. Kelly again stands up well so early on.

Finally the % pass accuracy that gives

Pass accuracy

Murray.......100%

Williams J....100%

Campbell.....95%

O'Keefe......81%

Kelly..........78%

Ward..........72%

Bolasie.......72%

Gayle.........71%

Hangeland...70%

Chamakh.....69%

Jedinak.......67%

Ledley........67%

Bannan.......66%

Dann..........63%

Delaney......56%

Puncheon....44%

Speroni.......31%

As ever you need to look at more than one stat to understand or you would be making Murray your midfield general :-) but 2 out of 2 is not that impressive really. :-) Gayle has made a total of 6 passes and so....

Good news - all from the perspective of these isolated stats

Kelly has made a surprisingly good start in a new team in difficult circumstances.

Campbell is probably doing better than it might seem but its still early days. Bear in mind the chasm between him and the rest at Arsenal. Give him some time.

Ward - starting as last year in a positive way

Jedinak - starting as last year in a negative way. It remains a real challenge for your main midfield outlet to be scraping a 67% average for completing a pass.

Chamakh needs to tweak this back up again to 70's at least. I doubt he will ever hit 80's due to the role and tbh lack of support when he is receiving it.

Bannan may hit some nice passes but he is giving the ball away more than it appears I suspect.

Speroni's numbers are pretty awful. His Distribution stat (different for keepers) is worse than 18 other keepers that have played. Only Hull City's MgGregor is worse. For context the top 10 are at 60% or more, while Speroni is at 34%. Ouch.

Stop at this point - 1) because it's already long - but 2 due to the Zaha news. It's party time. fingers crossed.

bully boys

Being reasonably new to posting and a little inexperienced , i have to say that i feel like a kid at new school that is targeted by the bullies .

I perhaps in my naivety believed that a forum was a place for open discussion with a frank exchange of views and opinions . After all if we all agreed there would be no forum .

Also i believed that an argument was a constructive statement or series of constructive statement directed at establishing a proposition or a platform for a debate. It appears if i do not have a popular opinion , i am subject to mindless abuse , such" f**k off you twat" or" no one gives a s**t what you think". That is not an intelligent argument it is just ignorance .

I have been called a " troll" mmmm the definition of a troll apart from the one that hides under the bridge in "three billy goats gruff" is someone that stalks and abuses someone on line , have i ever stalked or abused any one ?

If my opinion of the job that SP is doing is offensive then i apologize

If my opinion of Malky McKay being wrong for the job is offensive then once again i apologize

If my opinion is that Gayle should be starting up front is offensive then once again i apologize

But i am a Palace fan through and through since my first game in 1967 .

So my brief encounter with posting and the BBS is now over after this i will post no more or even read any thing , so the hail of abuse that i am expecting will be wasted as i shall not read it .

However i wish you all well and hope the management thing is sorted quickly and we can enjoy the season

Kate Bush

All over the news for a poxy comeback show after 1 decent album in 1979. Total shit.

So, nothing offical yet from the club, yet everyone seems to be getting their nick nicks in a twist.

What will be will be, I never thought that Pulis would have done what he did, I was expecting to go home after every game with a crick in my neck, but that never happened until Brentford.

Sometimes socail media is the worse thing going, but I for one will still turn up at every home game who ever is in charge and give at 100% support.

So, all calm down get behind the team and let's continue on our rollercoaster ride ;);)

Plastic v wooden seats

I don't know about other fans but I preferred the old wooden seat for comfort , I find I am constantly digging my knees into the person infronts seatback and the same goes for the person behind me on top of that the shape and pitch ( They slope backwards so the seat bottom doesn't lay flat ) of the seat makes them uncomfortable

The ground certainly looks smarter when empty though .

Only sat in the members stand so cannot comment on other parts of the ground .

Questions From Newcastle Fans

Hi guys, i'm from toonforum.co.uk and we like to ask opposition fans questions before the match to use in our build up. The questions are:

1 – Where do you think you’ll finish this season? What about Newcastle?

2 – New signings you think will make the biggest/smallest impact for both clubs?

3 – What young players could make an impact?

4 – Who is your most important player?

5 – If you could have one football player, past or present, live in your spare room who would it be and why?

6 – If your club was a footballer, who would it be and why?

7 - Who would you like to see take over as manager?

8 - Given the resignation of director of football Ian Moody, the lack of a manager and the seeming incompetence of Steve Parish are you confident of making the 3 or 4 signings you need before the window closes?

9 - What do you think of Pardew as a manager? (and would you take him?)

10 - Scoreline Prediction

Thanks in advance

First half hat tricks

In light of Dwight Gayle's superb hat trick vs Walsall, i am curious as to how many other CP players over the years have scored first half hat tricks.

I can only think of Dougie Freedman vs Grimsby, Dean Gordon vs West Brom and i think Ian Wright vs Birmingham in 89, although i'm not 100% sure on IW.

The likes of Peter Simpson, Albert Dawes and Johnny Byrne probably did but i'm not sure.

I'm guessing the thread may get spread out to include one half hat tricks in which Danny Butterfield vs Wolves would be included, as that was in the second half.

Any statisticians out there know?

Everton away

Tickets should be on sale for this now. Anyone away ST holders had money taken?

Suggested Team and Formation For: Newcastle (away)

-----------------------Speroni----------------------------

Mariappa------Dann-----------Kelly------------Ward

----------------Jedinak---------Ledley------------------

Puncheon-----------Chamakh----------------Bolasie

-------------------------Gayle---------------------------

Subs:

Hennessey

Delaney

JBW

Bannan

Williams

Campbell

Murray

If Dann is unfit then Delaney. If Ledley is unfit then Bannan. Hopefully Cork and Wilf, but not going to tempt fate by putting them in the line-up. Joniesta to get a run out at some point. Campbell dropped to bench in favour of the goal machine Dwight Gayle. Would be nice to get a point, but it's the Burnley home game that's crucial now. I wonder if Ledley will play left back if we get Cork.

Suggestion: geoff cameron

can play defensive midfield. will give us a bit of depth. surplus to requirements at stoke. possibly a cheaper option but with prem experience

Player Ratings And Reviews: Walsall 0-3 Palace

Back home from the game. Such a stroll and Palace were so comfortable in the first half.

2nd half we just looked like we were going through the motions.

Gayle took all his goals well. The first from a quick free kick that put him clean through and it was a good, powerful finish in to the far corner from an angle. Think the pass was from Guedioura? but not sure.

Second, you have probably seen on the video after Murray was fouled and 3rd was arguably the best runnning at the defence twisting and firing a left foot shot beyond the keeper.

No one else really outstanding but Murray, Bannan and Guedioura were all good. Bannan sat quite deep and dictated and switched play, some lovely passes. Thomas dangerous at times but he seems to hesitate a bit when in a dangerous position and looked a littlr shot shy. Jonny was decent.

Mariappa and rest of back 4 fairlt solid. Hennesey did OK but rarely tested, beaten when a second half shot cannoned off the post.

No real impact from subs as the game just petered out.

Hennesey 6 Solid but not much to do

Mariappa 6.5

Binnion-Williams 6

Delaney 6.5 Solid

Paddy 6 A couple of shaky moments

Guedioura 7.5 Physically strong and some good passes

Bannan 7 Very good on ball, calm, composed, a real passing range

Williams 6.5 Caused them a few problems

Thomas 6.5 As above

Murray 7 Busy and some nice touches, caused them problems

Gayle 8 - Three very well taken goals. Left the field after the game looking pregnant (presumably it was just the match ball)

Not sure if there is any point in a MOTM poll because I think we know who would win :lux:

The Ball at Kerrymuir

Can we get a singsong going? I'll do the first verse, and in true oral tradition, please add in any that you've heard. Let's see if we can get a definitive version of this pub classic together.

Singing....

Eye, tie, tie, tiddly,

Eye, tie, tie,

There were four and twenty virgins come down from Inverness,

When the ball was over there were four and twenty less,

Singing balls to your father, your arse against the wall,

If you've never been had on a Saturday night, you've never been had at all!

..., tie, tie, tiddly

Eye, tie, tie...

California earthquake

Couldn't see a thread on this.

Just reading that although the real time impacts of the quake were contained this continues to add further stress on the 'Hayward fault'. Again not massively significant this time but I was surprised to read the 1 in 3 chance of a significant quake before 2037. I know about the long term risk in that area but didn't realise the odds of a serious quake were as keen as that.

Extract

The USGS estimates that there is a 1 in 3 chance of a magnitude-6.7 or larger quake on the Hayward fault by 2037. Such an event would be devastating to San Francisco, Berkeley and the 7 million people living in the Bay Area.

End extract

We have family living out in San Francisco which is a wonderful place. But it made me wonder what the impact would be on the area commercially if those odds changed dramatically. A sudden commercial exodus could leave the population in some real trouble. Conversely, if they don't run for the hills, a quake could cause chaos.

It really isn't a big issue yet but surely this could literally change over night. Scary.

Roberto Mancini

Caught offside suggesting that we are considering a move for Mancini... Can't see this happening but thoughts??

Win Record in Premier League

I've seen some some mixed opinions regarding Steve Clarke and his record at West Brom. For me, hiring Steve Clarke seems like a no-brainer, and I cannot understand why he hasn't already been appointed.

People have suggested he only had one good year at WBA, and followed that with a bad year, but if you look at the stats Clarke has a better record than Pulis did at the time Palace hired him. .

I just tweeted some of the win records achieved in the Premier League by managers who have recently been linked to Palace.

Pulis won 42% of his matches as Palace manager, but at Stoke he only won 29% of matches played. Let's look at how these manager's overall records tally up:

1. Clarke 31%

2. Pulis 31% (29% at time of Palace appointment)

3. Zola 28%

4. Warnock 24%

5. Mackay 22%

6. McCarthy 20%

Since Steve Clarke has publicly indicated that he would be interested in the job, he has the experience of both a player and manager in the league, has a better win percentage currently than Pulis did before we appointed him and achieved his record by spending considerably less money than Pulis - surely he is by far the best candidate and ticks all the boxes on Parish's wish list.

So, why has he not been hired already?

Ticketing policy

I am a Palace fan of nearly 25 years. I've never lived in London but over the years I've attended on average a couple of games per season (regardless of the direction I thought the club was going :P), getting the train in from wherever I've been in the country. Since last season I've not been able to go to games, primarily because of the ticketing policy. I don't have £25 to spend on a Silver membership (I am a full time student, this money would normally go towards paying for one of my tickets/train fare/packed lunch/cheeky pint after the game). I find it odd that we have 2,000 or so empty seats for a match against a London rival at the weekend. I can't be the only person who is missing out on supporting my club because of this approach, there must be others who are put off too (e.g. teenagers coming along for the first time without dad - that's what got me!). I'll always come with a mate or two as well, usually frustrated Utd/'Pool/Gooners etc who can't get tickets to see their teams but will cheer Palace on for the afternoon (I'll turn them eventually :D). That's all money in the coffers of CPFC either way. I have a buying history with the club. I wanted to bring this to the attention of CPFC2010 in the hope that current ticketing policy might be revised.

It wouldn't be in the true spirit of the BBS if I didn't try to predict a certain reaction to this post so... I know I come across as tight! But what money you have is always relative to the money you have going in/out of your bank account each month. Which is different for different people. In short, if I earned more cash I would pay it. I want to support my club but this is a big issue for me. My trips down to Selhurst over the years have brought me great joy, win, lose or draw - is there any room for compromise?

Alternative view to new manager !

Just like almost everyone else, I've become addicted to searching if there is any new news every few mins.

During my addiction I've noticed that there is a pattern among most of the contenders.

No prizes but the current contenders have nearly all been sacked from previous jobs or resigned, now what has irritated me most is almost everyone concentrates on how bad the managers performed when they were sacked. Let's remember that our manager walked out meaning that these are the people that are available and they are actually good managers just victims of circumstances which are not always there own doing, for example the negativity surrounding Martin Jol because he "nearly" took Fulham down, thus no one wants Martin Jol same with Steve Clarke at West Brom & Zola at West Ham.

What we do not take into consideration is how well Martin Jol done at Spurs, taking them from ave top 8-10 side to top 5 in two seasons consecutively.

He was also the man to take Fulham into Europe for the first time in their history.

The experience and contacts as well as the style of play West Brom played under Steve Clarke and a 8th place finish.

Zola took West Ham to ninth and while at Watford arguably played the best football with a hap hazard side in the championship getting them to the playoff final as we know.

Now the majority of us would be happy with David Moyes as manager, but look at his final year !

Basically who ever CPFC2010 bring in we will need to get behind them but if there is all this negativity surrounding them before they get in, what chance do they stand !

So I'm saying yes please to (in order)

Martin Jol - because of his record overall, but especially what he achieves early doors with his teams.

Zola - style of football, and hopefully he will recognise the ability of Bannan, Williams and Gayle ( not just cause they are short )

Steve Clarke - style of play along with contacts and experience

D. Freedman - no way - greedy

N. Warnock - no way - judas

N. Lennon - pretend management experience in Scotland

Moody/Mackay - think we are very lucky to have dodged a bullet

Sherwood - not enough experience compared to others

Discuss !

Can we get Mclaren, or Clarke.

I know neither inspire, and of the two I'd far rather Mclaren, as he has been successful much more often than not, but I assume as he is employed it would simply take too long to get him in post? (if indeed he is being considered). Steve Clarke did v well at WBA in his first season, then much worse, but the team were still playing well. Lenon would be such a gamble, but SC does not seem to have been approached (or Mclaren?).

Personally, I see these two as the only viable candidates from the rumours and lists.

Pulis v Poyet

Well who's best ? Both seemed fundamental to the survival of their respectful clubs last season , Sunderland have started well again this season under Poyet and Brighton have struggled since he was sacked and the same appears to be happening at Palace since Pulis's departure .

The inbetweeners have applied for the managers job

The corporate language

Why use a straightforward description when a crap metaphor will do?

The current one with my place is 'crisp' everything has to be crisp and 'we have to get crisper on that'.

Low hanging fruit is a classic that refuses to go away, but I haven't heard the need for anyone to take a helicopter perspective for a while. Thankfully.

One other saying at one of our top management departments is a joke about work/life balance, as in 'I take work and you take life' (corporate smile).

Any other good ones out there to drop into a meeting with the senior management next time and piss off the colleagues?

Lift offered to Walsall from London...and back

Yes, there's been a change of plan - my original offer of a lift from Milton Keynes/Northampton has now been re-jigged as a lift from our great capital city up to the West Midlands and back after the match.

So even if you weren't planning to go, with tickets available on the doors, if you fancy a rare chance of seeing Palace actually win a game of football right now, then please send me a PM. (To have seen the last Palace win required a trip to the USA).

Chaining up our little Lions ?

I sense that the big story in the coming weeks is going to be around the whole British Jihadists themes and it seems obvious that our publicity hungry politicians are going to be falling over themselves to push through the sort of botched equivalent of the ‘Dangerous Dogs Act’ to somehow try and prevent our current crop of little Ali-G sounding ‘Lions’ from making the trip over to the badlands of Iraq and Syria and joining up with their new buddies in the Caliphate.

Now my understanding is that there is already legislation in place that makes it a criminal act for a British citizen to go abroad and take part in a foreign conflict as a combatant (I am sure it is a little bit more technical than this but for the purposes of kicking off the thread I am making this general assumption) but I do wonder if this is actually a state power that should not exist.

Who is the state to tell me who or what I can go and put my life on the line for ? And if this is such a terrible thing why do we have statues and recognition given to those who went and fought on the Republican side in the Spanish civil war ? (huge holes in this example so feel free to fill your boots on this because I am happy to be educated).

As somebody who got himself involved in a foreign conflict some 20 years ago (admittedly by accident rather than design and not in a combatant role although by the end of the experience it was certainly an option on the table) I sort of understand some of the motivations behind why these Brits have made the trek abroad and whilst I hope that when the violent end comes for these little scum bags who are boasting about killing people and raping female prisoners that it is a official British finger on the trigger because they are treacherous little ****s when all is said and done is it the role of HMG to stop them making a choice to do what they are doing ?

Also surely we are better off having the twisted little bastards over there rather than on a rush-hour tube train here ?

Warnock Being Backed.

Awful lot of money about for Neil Warnock this morning, being backed at a lot of bookies and 10-1 from 40-1 on Betfred.365 have just come in 6 points as well

Roberto Mancini

Would be a brilliant appointment for us. Would be great for the future and with our set up im sure if he actualy understood us as a club he might take the job.

Enhance your life..

Happy Birthday Calne Eagle

Have a great one Martin. It would be good to have you spread your wit and wisdom on here a bit more often instead of waging your one man "King of Facebook" campaign!

We could do with some mature, insightful and quietly thoughtful.....err.......oh never mind!

Have a brilliant day. :lux::lux:

The Crystals

As a fan of dance as well as football (well, not so much general football anymore as just Crystal Palace) I'd just like to say well done to the Crystals for their performance at the West Ham game yesterday. Seemed to be a new squad apart from a couple of familiar faces.I know from experience that a routine like that takes a lot of practice and that they don't just turn up on the day. Thank you for choosing to spend your time adding to the entertainment at Selhurst Park. You all looked great in the new uniform and your routine was very clever and entertaining. You are a credit to the club.

Well done and thank you.:p

Crystal Ball - Walsall

dimanche 24 août 2014

As this is the first knockout fixture of the season, some variations apply:

You still predict the final score, scorers and attendance for the usual points.

However there's a bonus point on offer for how we get there: if you say that either Palace or Walsall will win by at least a clear goal, you must say if it is in 90 minutes or 120. If you say that at the end of extra time the score remains tied, you pick who will win the penalty shoot-out though the margin doesn't matter. You can only get the bonus point if you get the correct result.

Here are some examples:

Palace win 2-0 in normal time. You predict 3-2. You get 1 point.

Palace win 2-0 in extra time. You predict 2-0. You get 3 points.

Palace win 2-0 in normal time. You predict 3-2 in normal time. You get 1 point + 1 bonus point.

Palace win 2-0 in normal time. You predict 2-1 in extra time. You get 1 point.

The game is drawn 1-1. Palace win 4-2 on pens. You predict 1-1 but Walsall to win on pens. You get 3 points.

The game is drawn 1-1. Palace win 4-2 on pens. You predict 2-2 and Palace to win 4-2 on pens. You get 1 point + 1 bonus point.

Anyway, post your punts...

Suggestion: Bryan Oviedo (Loan)

Could he come here and get some fitness back and offer use decent cover at Left back?

how did we get lombardo?

Was just thinking, I was only 9 when we signed him. How did we get him? As in how did we incentivise him?

Rip Richard Attenborough

Just breaking on the news now

Suggestion: Why are we bothering until we get a new manager ?

I'm assuming:

- none of us are experienced scouts

- none / few have coaching badges

- none have managed a professional football club let alone one in the premier league

So all things considered until we get a new manager why the hell are we bothering to bang on about transfer suggestions ?

It's all irrelevant at the moment.

Rumour: Zdravko Kuzmanovic

Leicester City and Crystal Palace are interested in Inter Milan midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic according to reports in Italy.

According to tuttosport the Serbian international is unsettled at Inter Milan and is keen to leave the San Siro, despite only signing for the Italian giants 18 months ago. The 27-year old is looking for a new home and if reports are to be believed Premier League duo Leicester City and Crystal Palace are keen on Kuzmanovic.

The Serbian has 46 international caps to his name and has previously played for FC Basel, Fiorentina and Stuttgart before his move to Inter Milan in 2013.

Chris Hughton

Just a thought , i know he has not had best of reports on here , but is he that bad ?

Hughton places great emphasis on two aspects of management: "As a manager, I've got to make sure they have the correct training sessions. That they are disciplined. That creates a good environment."[45]

When Hughton was dismissed as Newcastle manager, Kevin Nolan told The Sun, "Sometimes at clubs, when a manager goes, there will be some players who are pleased to see the back of him ... But everybody liked Chris. He was very popular, not just with the players but everyone who worked for the club."[46]

Just a thought , his team always seemed well organised ?

Discussion: Michael Dawson

Going to Hull. Who needs him anyway? We've got Hangeland

Gold Membership

So I paid my £35 on 30/07, the money was taken and loyalty points added to my account.

No membership card received. No email yesterday with digital version of programme.

I have emailed box office twice. Really poor service.

Crystal Palace guitars

So after our extremely poor performance yesterday I though I'd just post a couple of pictures of the guitars I have recently bought. I think those of you who have guitars of your own or just like music might appreciate them more than other people I know. Would love to hear your opinions on them.....

Match Updates: Spurs v QPR/Hull v Stoke (1:30pm ko)

2-0 Spurs, QPR look shite. No idea about the other game.

Match Day Programme

Must say I am really impressed with the programme this year. Looks very well made, and the content is varied and really interesting. More than worth the price. Well done to the team that put it together and keep up the good work!

Suggestion: wayne bridge

May be way off here but can still do a job. A natural left back with bundles of prem experience.

No talk of David Moyes?

I'm surprised there hasn't really been any talk of the possibility of getting David Moyes in as manager. You can't forget what he did for Everton. Even the great LVG looks to be struggling with that poor United side. Would he be a genuine candidate? Would he cost too much? He's by far got the most pedigree and track record of all the managers out there at the moment...

Suggested Team and Formation For: Walsall

-------------------Speroni-------------------

Mariappa----Kelly--------Delaney-------Ward

--------------Jedinak------Williams---------

Puncheon---------Chamakh-----------Bolasie

--------------------Murray---------------------

Subs:

Hennessey

Paddy

Jerome Williams

Boateng

Gayle

Campbell

Bannan

I think we need to try Kelly at centre back. The cup game will give us an excellent opportunity to try it out. We also need, in the absence of Ledley, to give Williams a go in centre mid. Murray is needed for his physical strength. We desperately need a morale-boosting win, so we need to play our best team.

Suggestion: Kris Commons

If Neil Lennon should become our new gaffer would be a good signing imo.

Good attacking midfeider that might be interested to follow suit

Messed up

West Ham fans in main stand

So today there were a massive number of West Ham fans in the directors box.

Personally I don't have an issue with this as long as the fans are respectful of us and their celebrations on goals are restrained.

The WHAM fans today were the exact opposite. They were drunk and I suspect coked up. They were goading Palace fans and generally being scumbags.

Many palace fans reported these guys to the stewards who did nothing but shrug their shoulders. I know one fan was told that existing directors box members had bought the tickets so there was nothing they could do.

I was pleased to see Palace fans showed restraint and did not start fighting.

The only action by club officials was when a suited Palace official came and asked them to sit down. This helped a little.
