So I have a question on employment law and what might be expected of employees, so who better to ask than a random bunch of football fans!
Basically, my wife works 2.5 days a week as a receptionist and has worked for this medium sized firm (<50 UK employees) for about 2 years. On the 2.5 days she isn't working, someone else in the business covers her duties.
Within her contract, it states that she is "To provide backup for other part time receptionist - holiday & sickness cover when required".
Now for various reasons, this has never been asked of in any way, but recently they have started bringing this up and saying she has to do it. Just yesterday, she was told that her Other will be taking a weeks holiday in 10 days, and she will have to do her 2.5 days.
During the February half term she had to cover which meant putting our 6 year old into a Holiday Club, which pretty much meant she was working in order to pay for the childcare!
So my question is... Is this normal/allowable? I've never seen such a thing in my working career, but i've always worked in very big firms, so maybe i'm blinkered.
She's sucking it up at the moment because she likes the job aside from this, and doesn't want to flatly refuse to cover, but if there was some HR view on whether this was even enforceable, it would make that conversation easier for her.
