On the back of chat about a European Super League and taking ideas from US sports on how things are run it got me thinking as to why the European comps are based upon last years performance and played throughout the season.
So I propose this as a new calendar:
August - March is purely for Domestic Competitions. No international breaks, no midweek european comps just the English/Scottish etc.
April/May - Champions League (could be up to 64 teams but maybe 32) - Played in a style akin to the world cup. All games in a month. Spread out over the week. Qualifiers would be from that season in a similar vein to how they are now.
June/July - International Tournaments - Either Qualifying or the actual tournament every summer.
Loads of issues with this but I like the idea of the season building up to a big tournament at the end like march madness or the playoffs.
