The French are suggesting that refugees or potential refugees should be able to apply for refugee status in the UK from Calais and I cannot for the life of me see why this should happen or how it would help, anyone other than the locals of Calais. I can understand why they want to do this and that their end goal is to remove the Jungle but they don't want to take these people into their country.
Many if not all of these people have travelled on very long very hard and dangerous journeys and you assume all that would be successful in their applications from an even harder and more dangerous place. So why have they not applied for asylum in a safe country that they have traveled through ? Why when they are living in terrible conditions in a safe country do they not apply for asylum there ?
If France really wants to remove this problem they need to break up the camp and register all the people who feel that they are entitled to asylum there in France and then deport those who are not. For the life of me I can not see why they don't do this, it removes the camp and France is taking responsibility for these people, and if people need asylum in a safe country they have got it. I also believe that if this was to happen that less people would want to travel to France to try to get in to the UK.
IF there were not fee borders through Europe whilst I don't doubt there would still be a number of people that made it Calais it would be far less, we did not join the Schengen Agreement we did not want it France did and has to accept some of the disadvantages of this.
