The Champion County match is an established fixture in the English season, with a strong invitational MCC side brought together to give the previous summer's best four-day side a testing start to the year.
Traditionally, the fixture was held at Lord's and always attracted a decent crowd. However, in 2010, it was decided to play the match (against the then County Champions Durham) in the UAE. The MCC justified the decision as an important means to "strike up a partnership with the Abu Dhabi Cricket Club".
Cynics might suggest that this fixture gives a handful of MCC and EDB executives an excuse to enjoy a bit of early season sun, at the other people's expense.
This year, the County Champions are Middlesex, the Club which shares it's home ground with the MCC. A petition has been started aimed at persuading ECB to relocate this match to the home ground shared by both participants.
It would be great if this match could be enjoyed by thousands of members of the two clubs rather than a tiny handful.
