Cultural appropriation

This is perhaps peak Guardian. So much so that part of me suspects it was written purely as clickbait to get people commenting how daft it is:

Now I get that there are instances of cultural appropriation which are inappropriate. The native American war bonnet for example, which has a particular significance in native American culture where it can only be worn if you have earnt the right to wear it.

But saying authors can't write fictional characters that are different from them? It's utter madness.

Music, cuisine, fashion, literature - all advance and are enhanced through cultural appropriation. Yet a certain type of millennial seems now to think it's a sin.

Thoughts?
