The competition (then known as the Ball Gazing) was originally started by a chap named beestey. When he was expelled from the BBS part way through the 2008 season, Hugh and I agreed to requests to take it over just to complete that season. We brought in a few new rules, changed the name to Crystal Ball, and I bought a new trophy - as beestey refused to pass over the existing one. So, that was 2008, and we only agreed to complete that year, but we have in fact carried on running it right through to the season just ended. For the last two years we have been very grateful to the help of four others who have shared the work with us. But, independently, Hugh and I have now both decided that after 8 years we will now step down. Because of other things he is involved in, one of the other organisers, CaterhamEagle, has also decided he now needs to step down. Happily, the other three are pleased to carry on running it - subject to two or three of you volunteering to assist them.
If there are 5 or 6 of you running it, it really isn't an onerous task, because your turn to calculate the points only comes up every 5 or 6 weeks. You don't even need to be proficient with a computer (I'm almost computer illiterate) as you can do it in whatever way you find simplest, and the others will always be pleased to guide you. If you are willing to lend a hand, please can you PM karl.eldridge, who will be delighted to hear from you.
It would be a great shame if such a popular competition dies. Last season, the number of participants, 409, was the second highest ever (432 in 2012/3), and the number of hits, 17,011 was also the second highest ever, beaten only slightly in 2011/12. And in both those previous seasons quoted, we were in a lower division so more matches were played. So please do PM Karl if you are willing to play a small part in helping to run it.
