Quote:

I want to start this column by declaring my position: I want to be the England manager. It is a job I aspire to and it is an ambition of mine.
But not now.
Now, I have a big job at Crystal Palace and we have an important summer ahead of us. We have already made a couple of big bids and I want to build our team.

I have signed a new contract, we have new, ambitious American investors and with my chairman Steve Parish we all want to attack this division.
I've been to the Euros, I am rested and feel galvanised and ready to push on from our FA Cup final appearance. That has made me hungry for more.
I do hope the Football Association will want to talk and I have strong opinions on England, but I have been asked if I want the England job and I have given my answer.
One day.

Having heard and read interviews with a few of our Albion Powerchair players there's no doubt how much of a difference it can make. Great stuff.

Recommend a garden fence company

Need garden fencing supplied and fitted. Modest height. Sydenham area. Any recommendations?

Chances of going broke?

I have heard the horror stories of us going bankrupt in the past. With us ablout to spend tons on wages (possibly) what are the chances we could go broke assuming we buy benteke, townsend, and mandanda. Ps. I trust our board with our finances, but arent we going a little too hard this window? Im an american so have fun laughing at how stupid this thread is if it is.

Suggestion: Kamil Glik

Been really impressed by Glik during the Euros. Would like to see him line up alongside Dann at the start of the season. Been with Torino for 5yrs now so might be looking for a new challenge.

Poland vs Portugal

Come on Polska. Beckenham is behind you. Well some parts.

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Suggestion: Neven Subotic

I don't think this would be too unrealistic given where we seem to be this window already. Supposedly Stoke, Sunderland and Liverpool would like to sign him.

He's only 27 and has been here on trial before so would know of us and I think he would slot right in next to Dann.

Rumours are he wants to stay in Germany with Cologne ready to make a £4million bid, so not too expensive transfer wise. Unsure of what sort of wage he would demand though.

Monthly Beer Clubs

Has anyone signed up to any of the online beer clubs where they different deliver beer to you monthly?

I set myself the challenge to drink a different beer every day this year. Thought I'd set myself a New Years Resolution that I...

a) might keep
b) would enjoy

Been going fine so far but a new family member has meant it's harder (actually impressive) to get out for a beer so drinking at home is the new going out. Picked up loads from supermarkets and shops but thought a beer club might be a decent shout too. Anyone had any experiences with any of the companies as there are seemingly quite a few. Cheers.

New DFS Advert

Has GAO playing and Red and Blue tickertape exploding from houses. Something to do with one of their one billion sales. However a great advert and made me look up when I heard our very own DC5!

Suggestion: Carlos Bacca

If we are bidding silly money for Batshuayi, we could do a lot worse than trying to get Carlos Bacca in. (ok, it probably won't happen, but we could try)

He obviously wants Champs League football..don't we all...!?! But he is a fair bit cheaper than Batshuayi and is attracting interest from WestHam, Liverpool, Roma and Athletico...even bidding for him would show our intention of signing top names...or at lease make the other clubs after him pay more than they want to... :vader:

Legal question regarding property

Wondering if any of the legal minds out there have any advice on the following.

My boss has a flat in a building with four other flat owners. There is a single garage at the side of the building which had been gradually disintegrating over the years and was in a very poor state - the roof was 60% collapsed and there was a big crack between the garage and the building itself.
At a residents meeting all of the other tenants denied it being their responsibility and refused to pay anything towards the repair and restoration. My boss said he was willing to undertake the work and then have use of the garage to which all of the others agreed.
Having invested c. £5000 to make good the garage, one of the flats have contacted him saying that they own the garage and have furnished a copy of the land registry document proving their ownership. They have given him 28 days to vacate.
Does he have a legal leg to stand on? Could he claim compensation to cover the cost of the works? Or are the owners guilty of perpetrating some kind fraud to get their property repaired for free?

Fixtures on the front page

mardi 28 juin 2016

It's good to have the fixtures back on the front page because the BBS is where I would normally go to look for them ... but is there any chance we could get them looking a little nicer.

Most important is the day of the week, there's nothing indicating this at the moment. Also...

Cheeky request #1
could we get them formatted a little better

Cheeky request #2
Previously we would have had cup ties listed but there were none last year could we get them back this year

Ta!

EU and the cliff edge

I've been reading about the unrest and rise of the far right and eurosceptism in europe.

Since 2000 the percentage increase in far right vote is scary. Our UKIP achieved 12.6% of the vote last election. 10 EU countries have higher far right vote percentages than us. Some more than double. Some of these parties are also openly anti-jewish and anti-muslim!!!!!!

There are 4 others with high far right votes that have either decided not to join or are in the process of joining. There are also other parties with far right leanings in some of the above countries meaning the overall far right vote is even higher.

The list of countries with a higher far right eurosceptic vote higher than ours includes: France, Sweden, Norway (approved but not joining EU), Finland, Hungary, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland (approved but not joining the EU), Poland.

The leaders of the EU really do need to take a good look at their policies, direction and decisions. This rise has taken place since the EU began their 'ever closer union' and 'freedom of movement' policies.

Hopefully, the UK vote will be the kick up the arse they need but as they live in a bubble I very much doubt it.

Some of the policies of these parties make the National front look like pussy cats!

France have an election in May 2017 with the current president polling 17%!!!! The right wing Eurosceptic party is the highest at 30%.

Unless the EU winds its neck in pronto it's last intervention will be to oversee the break up of the EU.

Turkey

Explosion and gunfire heard at Istanbul's Ataturk airport, Turkish media report To view the link you have to Register or Login

At least two explosions and gunfire have rocked Istanbul's Ataturk airport, with reports of "multiple" people injured.
Gunfire was directed from an airport car park, according to a witness quoted by Reuters news agency.
Taxis were ferrying wounded people from the airport, the witness added.

Link Detached - tearing down a garage

Wise BBS, I was curious if anyone had done this before.

Mrs Jimos has her eye on a house, which happens to be link detached. Said house is not quite what Mr Jimos would choose to live in, in its current state, but he can see what could potentially be done with it (STPP).

Have any of you ever gone through the process of tearing down a linked garage? In this case, the property has a double garage, linked to a neighbour's single garage - I would imagine that it would just be a case of *carefully* removing the ones that would be ours, ensuring the party wall remained in good condition, then fencing down the gap, and rebuilding again as separate.

Logic suggests neighbour would be pretty happy with that, as it'd make them truly detached and presumably increase property value on both sides. I can see from the satellite google snap that they've extended off the back of their single garage, so I'd shave a little off the size of the garage (i can't foresee two cars going in there, considering we have two cars that don't have a garage now), to make a clear divide, and potentially lose a few inches of land in order to clearly define the boundary.

From my perspective, I would want to extend over half of the double garage and build backwards, which ought on my limited understanding, be approved by the local planning committee, but I'm very conscious that I have an Other Half who gets carried away sometimes when she is thinking all Grand Designs.

Any advice gratefully received!

Rumour: Jerome Onguene

To view the link you have to Register or Login

I know its only the Daily Mail, but we should be looking at this type of signing along with the big money buys.

His career progression so far has been good, and he is tall enough for a CB, but can also play on the right.

Worth a punt for a couple of million ?

Rumour: Jerome Onguene

Quote:

Aston Villa and Crystal Palace have expressed interest in Sochaux defender Jerome Onguene.

The 18-year-old defender has earned rave reviews with his club this season prompting a £1.75million offer from Turkish club Trabzonspor at the weekend.

Onguene was born in Cameroon but has been capped by France at U19 level and is due to play for his country again against England, Croatia and Holland in the UEFA U19 Championship next month.

The 6ft 3ins centre back, who can also play right-back, has been watched by Arsenal and Newcastle too in the past year.

Sochaux would like to keep Onguene but the move would help them financially.

Palace are in the driving seat given their top flight status, but Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo will hope to lure the youngster to Villa Park with the player having a better chance of regular first team football next season.

Alan Pardew will have money to spend ahead of the new Premier League campaign, and his budget will be increased if the club complete the sale of Dwight Gayle.

Fulham are set to rival Newcastle with an £11million move for the former Peterborough United.

The 25-year-old only signed a new three-year deal at Selhurst Park in April but has struggled for first-team opportunities.

Icelandic Chant

I really found the chant and the atmosphere created by only three thousand Icelandic fans not only interesting as to how they made so much noise but also found it quite intimidating......is that something we would consider doing ?I thought it was great.:lux::lux::lux::lux:

CPFC 4 England 0

One ray of sunshine from Iceland defeat. All 4 CPFC Euro 2016 players are still in it. That is all.

Why did so much of the press cream each other over Rooney in midfield?

He was average at best. In the Cup final his best work was when he was pushed forward. Against a poor Russia who didn't press he looked like he could play a decent pass but didn't know his place in defence. Which was basically the pattern from them on. Great with time on the ball, didn't know what to do if pressured, never really comfortable in a defensive pattern. And that caused panic to spread.

Should go now as well. He isn't in the top four strikers anymore

Who do you want as England manager

lundi 27 juin 2016

Not who you think we'll get? We all know the FA's next original idea will be its first.

however, if you could pick the next manager for 2018 who would it be?

here is my list.

1) Jose Pekerman (great work for Colombia; great flowing football and can meld world class players with good workhorses)

2) Bob Bradley (he took the US to a world cup quarterfinal without only 1 player playing in a top 4 league. Enough Said)

3) Herve Renard (knows europe, won 2 african cup of nations with a team full of massive egos)

Poll: Wales v Belgium

I am going to Lille on Friday where I shall be watching Wales v Belgium. Had hoped to be watching England but our failure to win group B put paid to that.

Not sure who to support. On one hand would love to see Wayne, Ledley and Joniesta get through to semis.

On other hand I know all the Welsh fans have taken great delight at England's elimination and would never cheer for England if roles were reversed.

To sum up. Would love Wales to win for Palace players. Would love Wales to lose just to wipe smug smile off their fans faces.

Who would you cheer for? Wales or Belgium?

That's how crap the overpaid, over hyped, supposed best England can offer, Premier League lightweights should have managing them.

Play 6-4-0, counter attack football with 30-35% possession.

Alright, he's gone soon.

Who should be next manager?

I honestly don't have a scooby except a thought Pardew would not be upto it.

BM Summer Olympics 2016 - Rio Special

On the off chance that the Olympics actually occur this Summer, you are welcome to participate in the BBS' very own Olympic Betting Masters competition.

Previous Winners

2008 Beijing - pauldrulez
2012 London - Stigma
2014 Sochi - srs9jps

The rules are as follows:
  • Bets only allowed on Olympic events.
  • If you are interested, declare your In-ness by the Opening Ceremonies.
  • Each entrant will have 35 bets.
  • Of your 35 bets you will have 20 Bronze bets which will be the normal 10pts - 10 Silver bets which will be 15pts and 5 Gold bets which will be worth 20pts per bet. Please indicate when placing a bet what value it is by putting a B, S or G next to it.
  • The Ostapchuk Rule: If one of your bets is affected by a competitor getting a positive drug test, it must happen before the penultimate day of competition. This is to make sure everyone has a chance to counterbet.

In previous iterations of the competition, we've had each bettor name an event that everybody has to bet on and last time in Sochi we had a random event picked every day that everybody had to bet on. Since the summer games are a little longer, that's probably not the best idea but I'm taking suggestions on how the required bets are decided.

The Tory leadership is the ultimate poisoned chalice We'll be left with whichever Tory is so incapable they would never otherwise have a chance at it, and want some reckless glory The Labour Party can't take over because Corbyn cannot carry his PLP, which is what is needed in this moment of crisis But the only candidate the PLP will accept is a second gen. Blairite, who cannot have the tools or leverage to cope with Brexit implications UKIP have all the soft power of a victory, but none of the infrastructure or apparatus to actually take power at all The only options for action beyond are trade unions, Army, Crown or the EU (in the negative, forcing hands)At the centre of a British state is a vacuum of power, a hamstrung civil service, and all 3rd party actors waiting to see Nothing is off the table in this moment of crisis. E.g. if truckers decided to block the pumps this week, a military coup is on the cards We're in a moment of absolute crisis in which the boldest actor could take the house: but all our assumptions about who that is have flipped Also unlikely but still feasible - a new populist force promising to enforce Brexit through extraparliamentary means, or, even less likely, a trade union led response to act in order to steady British industry or to force a political response. Who knows? All we really know is there's one intelligent answer supported by nearly all actors; we cancel Brexit. But there's no way to sell to public We're colossally ****ed. There's no way out. 3 decades of chickens, home to roost in a single night. I realise these all seem like impossible fantasies - but can you point me to another way out of what is now a constitutional crisis? Britain is essentially operating without a legitimate or functional government, nor a functioning opposition right now. Anyone with half a plan can and will take the initiative here to wrest control of the agenda. Right now, thats just the SNP it seems. Because an unwritten constitution is still a constitution, but one that relies on functioning institutions, which we're losing quickly The problem here is that Hannah, Farage, Boris, Gove all campaigned on a platform which they never intended to deliver Their "plan" was soft Brexit - major austerity, no lower immigration figures, some sort of EAA agreement and free movement But to achieve it they let believers in Hard Brexit - closed borders, £350m for NHS etc - think these were the terms. It's impossible to run our financial services-based economy on the terms of hard Brexit, but it was hard Brexit wot won it This is why I can't see way out - no feasible way to bring along Hard Brexiteers along, but no way to make country work on Hard Brexit terms I'm a total amateur and just thinking out loud here, but to me the most likely way out of Hard Brexit seems a combination of the Crown and a government of national unity. Basically the Referendum has delivered a Leave mandate that no political organisation is able or willing to enact. That's the crisis.
by Huw Lemmey on Twitter. the TL:dR version is, Boris has created an appetite for something he never had any intention of delivering and the only way out of it, one way or another is to completley revoke democracy. one way or another.

Post Brexit mortgage advice please?

On the back of Thursdays result i'm thinking of switching my mortgage to a 10 year fixed rate offer from the same provider. I will pay a little more over the lifetime of the mortgage (14.5 years), but my thinking is these deals will be hard to get soon. Is this project fear or a sensible move? Cheers for any remain/leave advice :)

Getting to know Crystal Palace

I live in Vancouver British Columbia and have been a Crystal Palace supporter since before the days of Jonny Byrne.
Palace are coming to Vancouver in July and I found this link promoting the game. You will find a video of the team who played against MU in the 90's. They are singing Glad all Over. I remember singing it as a kid. I wa s born in 1942. Enjoy.
Sorry the site won't let me post the url. Try searching for Vancouver Whitecaps v's Crystal Palace-- getting to know Crystal Palace.
Sorry if it is old news for the hardcore supporters.

Brexit - the economic and social impact

So there we have it - enough to say the people who led us to Brexit must now justify the economic and social impact that we were promised....

From the £350m more to spend on he NHS to the glorious economic reformation of the UK economy

Lets see over the coming months and years what will happen - given that the people who voted out will be expecting economic and social benefits of that process...

Pensions: There are 6000 DB schemes, 5000 of which have a current deficit of £360bn short of being able to meet their pension promises - today the stock market fell - that means those deficits increased - these are a real structural issue for the UK economy because as Tata and BHS demonstrate this monetary gap can bring down a company or make it impossible to sell....

DC pots - where most people are saving on an individual unit basis are all ready proving that they will not deliver enough to live out the last years of your life in a comfortable way - it takes £30 of assets to deliver £1 of cash -the average pot is £35k....and today they will have been hit even more

“UK voters have opted for Brexit. If fully followed through, this will be an act of economic self-harm with global ramifications,” said Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at the consultancy Pantheon Macroeconomics.

On stock markets, which had rallied in the run-up to the vote on misplaced optimism about a victory for remain, there were sharp falls. Banking shares were left nursing losses not seen since the collapse of US investment bank Lehman Brothers in the financial crisis of 2008.

The global stock market rout was costly for the UK’s 15 richest individuals, who between them lost £4bn during the day, according to news organisation Bloomberg’s billionaire index. Britain’s richest person, Gerald Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, led the decline with a loss of £727m, followed by Topshop owner Philip Green, fellow land baron Earl Cadogan, and Bruno Schroder of money manager Schroders.

What are the political and social implications of an economy on the slide?

The likely look of the new government

What do people think?

Boris clear favourite for PM but not as popular with Parliamentry colleagues as he is the public. Conservative rules means he needs to get to final two before public can vote. If he does he'll win surely? May will stand, will Gove?

I think Gove might take charge of negotiations for exit rather than take a traditional role.

IDS will surely go back to DWP to continue his reforms

Liam Fox and Pritti Patel will want jobs.

Gove and Johnson hate Farage but might dangle a peerage and a position if he disbands UKIP?

Who else? Who will survive from current lot?

Euro voting system should be adopted for general elections ?

It was a refreshing to change to watch a voting system where everyone's vote counted.

Would you like to see the same system for the general elections ?

Support for fans rights - Carl Zeiss Jena

As we know, Germany are light years ahead when it comes to supporters issues with their initiatives and supporter rights, from safe standing to beers in the stadium.

Hopefully this is of interest to some, but a club in the fourth division, Carl Zeiss Jena are set to build a new stadium after their council deemed it too run down. Their fans saw it as opportunity to help re-develop their ground but were not consulted when they council planned to move supporters out of their end in the 'Sudkurve' (the South stand) to facilitate the away fans move to the South stand. Their fans are now campaigning to stay in the South Stand and keep the away fans away from the end that their supporters are historically known for.

The council, local police and fire departments want the move for away fans in the South Stand because it would be safer because they can in effect make a divided entrance to the stadium (a bit like the entrance to Millwalls ground I believe) but Carl Zeiss Jena fans, believe that if more money is spent on the South stand they would be able to stay in their stand and be able to facilitate away fans.

Here you can find more information and support their cause to raise funds for their stand. As I say it's another interesting project coming out of Germany.

Brexit impact on Scotland / Ireland

Anyone have thoughts on impact f vote on Scotland / Ireland?

Scottish nationalists will be delighted. A vote for independence is now also a defacto vote for joining EU.

I imagine this will happen soon.

If Scotland goes then there will be a general loosening of the U.K and of course that impacts The Irish question.

The economic benefits for Ireland will be pretty good for them. Already ahead of UK for American companies - this is now going to be exaggerated.

Interesting times.

Teacher strike.

Today, the NUT announced that members in England have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action to protect pay and working conditions. In the NUT’s ballot, 91.7% voted in favour of strike action.
The NUT is calling the first day of strike action on 5 July. The strike demands are to increase funding to schools and education, guarantee terms and conditions in all types of schools, and to resume negotiations on teacher contracts to allow workload to be addressed.
About bloody time too.

Arrogant English pundits

I am English and would desperately love England to win the tournament.

However this afternoon after it was known that England would face Iceland in the last 16, I found the attitude of our so-called expert pundits embarrassing. In particular Rio Ferdinand, arrogant tw&t seemed to think it was a shoe-in that we would easily beat Iceland. Here is a team who have drawn with Portugal and Hungary and beaten Austria. Surely they deserve more respect.

We on the other hand have failed to beat Russia and Slovakia and only best Wales thanks to a last minute winner. Unless we play much better than we did in our group games, we could all be in for a nasty shock. We cannot afford to be complacent. Iceland have fully deserved their place in the last 16 and will not be easy opponents.

In some ways Portugal might have been easier. A team who would have come at us rather than one sitting back. Our ability to break down mass defences has been pretty poor up to now.

Why do we employ such arrogant tw&ts as pundits?

Italy are through as Group E winners and will face Group D runners-up Spain at 18:00CET on 27 June at Stade de France.
Belgium will clinch second spot with a draw and would take on the Group F winners in Toulouse on Sunday. They can afford to lose by three goals, and will only be denied a top-three berth if they lose and Ireland beat Italy.
Sweden will secure at least third place, and reach the round of 16, with a win. If both Sweden and Ireland win, they will be split by goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary ranking and then coefficient (which favours Sweden). Sweden are out if they don't win.
Ireland must win to have any possibility of progress. They can only come second if Sweden also win and Ireland pip them on goal difference, goals scored or disciplinary ranking.

Final day of the group stage

Group F Permutations (taken from To view the link you have to Register or Login)
Wednesday 18.00CET: Iceland (2) v Austria (1), Hungary (4) v Portugal (2)
Hungary are also into the round of 16. They will top the group with a victory; if they draw they could only be deprived of first position if Iceland win and overtake them on overall goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary, then coefficient. The only situation in which they could finish third is if they lose and Iceland win.
Portugal are through with a draw. If they win, they could only miss out on first place if Iceland win and eclipse them on overall goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary (Portugal have a superior coefficient). A draw would only leave Portugal second if the other game is drawn and they are ahead of Iceland on goals scored, or then disciplinary, or then coefficient, where Portugal are superior. A point would leave Portugal in third place unless the Iceland-Austria game also ends in a draw; Portugal could then overtake Iceland on goals scored, disciplinary or coefficient depending on the respective scorelines.
Iceland would qualify with a draw or better. They could even top the group if the other match is drawn or Portugal win. In those two scenarios, they would be split with the other team on five points (Hungary or Portugal) on goal difference, then goals scored, then disciplinary; Hungary are ahead on coefficient. A draw would leave Iceland second if Hungary win or if the other game is drawn; in the second scenario, Portugal and Iceland would be separated on goals scored, disciplinary (Portugal have a superior coefficient); even then Iceland would progress as a best third-placed side.
Austria will be second with a win unless Portugal also prevail, in which case Austria would end up behind Hungary on head-to-head and would go through as one of the four best third-placed sides. A draw is not good enough for Austria.

Winger or just behind striker, 30 in two seasons not bad

Happy Pydna Day (for Adlerhorst)

22 June 168 BC - Battle of Pydna: Romans under Lucius Aemilius Paullus defeat and capture Macedonian King Perseus.

The Tournament So Far

Any thoughts?

I think the group phase has been spoilt a bit by the increase to 24 teams. With 16 teams, the tournament was short and sweet.

Hopefully I won't be accused as an England fan of sour grapes but there was something unedifying about the way Slovakia celebrated finishing 3rd in the group. They've got potentially one of the most dangerous players in the competition but I hardly heard his name mentioned on Monday. The same has happened in the last games for most of the groups. Apart from Wales!

My view is that 16 was the ideal number of teams for the tournament. But if the decision was made to increase then we should have gone to 32 and had 8 groups of 4. Then you get the jeopardy of 2 teams missing out and hopefully a bit more adventure.

Goals scored and conceded

mardi 21 juin 2016

Last season's league position - 15th. Not as good as previous 2 seasons but when combined with an FA Cup Final appearance represents a satisfactory season to most fans.

Goals scored - 39. Just over one per game and 17= in Premier League, level with Norwich and better only than WBA and Villa.

Goals conceded - 51. 10= in Premier League, level with West Ham and better than Chelsea amongst others.

Obvious conclusion. Last season our defence and keeper(s) delivered to a high level - especially when you consider our very low possession statistic which results on continual workload on defensive players. Our attacking players have not delivered. One goal per game is not good enough. Combination of poor final passes from our erratic wingers. Not creating nearly enough chances. Not helped by Wickham's injury. Fact that Dann was amongst our leading scorers says it all.

Many fans have made Hennessey a scapegoat for our poor record post Christmas. Hopefully Pardew is concentrating on strengthening our attacking options, both wingers and goalscorers. Better ball retention, better final passes, more goals. The defence and keeper(s) is of secondary concern.

Rumour: John Brooks

Several EPL clubs interested in Brooks. I hope we are one of them. Given our needs it makes sense. After watching him in Copa, he is twice the player than any of the proposed alternatives.

Are we better off with the Internet or without

It strikes me that the whilst the Internet can be useful the majority of it is bullshit. Before it existed I went out to eat, to the cinema or theatre. I went on holiday. In fact I do everything that I do now. Oh and without the fear of identity theft, viruses, scams etc. Social networking is by and large a complete waste of time, together with the stress to youngsters of cyber bullying and the seemingly unpoliceable crime. Then we have what we are told is the dark web! Is it really worth it?

Group D Permutations taken from (To view the link you have to Register or Login)

Tuesday 21:00CET: Czech Republic (1) v Turkey (0), Croatia (4) v Spain (6, qualified)

Spain are through and will win the group with a draw, meaning a last-16 game on Saturday in Lens against a third-placed team. The Group D runners-up play Italy at the Stade de France on 27 June.
Croatia will qualify with a point and top the group with a win. Croatia will only miss out on the top two if they lose, the Czech Republic win and overtake them on goal difference/goals scored/disciplinary (if those are all equal, Croatia have a superior coefficient).
Czech Republic must win and either overhaul Croatia for second place or finish as one of the best four third-placed sides, though mathematically that could be achieved with a draw.

Scudamore & Cameron stitch Palace up over EU

Steve Parish responds in bullish style on BBC Radio 5 Live:
To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has slammed the Premier League's claim that all 20 top-flight clubs want to stay in the European Union.

And the Eagles co-owner claimed celebrity endorsements from stars like David Beckham was “the politics of the playground”.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore claimed yesterday that the 20 clubs backed a Yes vote at the recent AGM because leaving would be “incongruous” to its commitment to “openness”. This was then re-tweeted by David Cameron.

But Parish told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We didn't have a vote. Every single position in the Premier League requires a vote. Unlike some of the things in the EU, the Premier League is a democracy and we get to vote for things. And we didn't vote for that. This club would like to distance itself from that statement. I don't think it is for Premier League clubs to decide how people vote.

"Unless I fell asleep in a meeting which I don't think I did, we didn't have a vote on whether we endorsed a view to stay in Europe.

“And for me, I don't think it is the position of a football club to tell anyone to vote in any election. It is extraordinary that David Cameron would tweet that as a fact and use our logo as if we are endorsing one view or another. We were never asked.

"We have probably got a split inside our ownership group, we haven't debated it internally and we would certainly like our supporters to vote with their conscience and based on the facts that they know and not because the football club is encouraging them to do anything.”

Parish added: “I think people are fed up. In the last two days, David Beckham has said we should stay in – it is the politics of the playground for me.

"Let's marshal as many people that we revere and respect on each side and try and get them to force people's view. I think people are fed up with the whole campaign and for me to put all 20 Premier League clubs in favour of remain in the hope that maybe football fans will vote for Remain because they see their club's logo - is that how we want to stay in the EU or leave? - it is very disappointing for me.”

Withdrawing from the EU could pose problems for European players gaining the automatic right to play here like now.

But the Palace boss, a successful businessman who sold his international design and production agency Tag Worldwide in 2011, said: “If we were to leave, we could give anyone we want a work permit from anywhere in the world. You are not honestly saying if we left the EU, the UK government would say we couldn't have German footballers here.

I think most people think there are probably a lot more things in this debate rather than if a German footballer can come and play in England or not. I think it is far bigger and more important than that.”

Money Management Software

I have been using Quicken 2001 for years and the PC it is on is finally giving up the ghost. There is no UK support for any of the new Quicken products so upgrading appears to be a no-no - and a total pain in the arse.

I don't use any online functionality - I really just track spending between accounts, and reconcile statements.

Is there any simple and safe software to do the job or should I just use a spreadsheet? It would be great if I can carry my old data over but appreciate that this is highly unlikely.

1.82 goals per game

So far.

Will it get better from here? Even Italia 90 - widely considered to be the most sterile tournament in living memory - mustered 2.12 goals per game.

It's been even worse in Euros before. In 1968, the average was 1.4 goals although the tournament only consisted of semi-finals and final.

In 1980, the average was 1.93 goals per game. No wonder the England fans demolished Italy that summer.

Perhaps it's the adjustment to more teams that is behind this. When the Euros switched to 16 teams in 1996, the goals per game average was a measly 2.06. It then never dropped below 2.45 until this edition.

Thoughts?

Germany will qualify with a draw, which would be enough for them to top the group if Poland do not win.
Poland will qualify with a draw or regardless of their result if Northern Ireland lose. If Poland end up level with Germany, the two sides will be separated by overall goal difference, then overall goals scored, then disciplinary rankings, then coefficient rankings (which would favour Germany).
Northern Ireland go through with a victory and will finish third if they draw or lose.
Ukraine are eliminated in fourth place as even if they come level with Northern Ireland on points, they lost the direct encounter.

Troy Deeney

Are they serious, more money then sense! :moo2:

Roy, you should have taken Wilf

No width for 3 games. We needed someone to unlock packed defences. Sterling out of form. I thought he picked on form not on club and past reputation.

Discussion: We need to change transfer policy

To be honest I'd rather we spend a large sum on a game changer rather than a few good players, rather get a game changer and the closest person to a game changer within our reach has to be Berahino. Shelling out maybe 20 million on him I feel we could get West Brom's attention. This few good player policy hasn't worked in Sako, Mariappa, Mutch, Chung, Kelly, Hangeland and Campbell they were good players for their previous clubs but nothing fancy, best case scenario for these guys would have been they were going to be decent players at the very best. I really think we need to push the boat out again like we did with Cabaye. This team is full of decent players but only a few have the ability to change a game those being Dann, Cabaye, Bolasie and Zaha. The rest come are decent at best, some better than others. Really need to start buying QUALITY instead of quantity!

Gaming PC's, Are they worth it?

Hi All,

I've always been into gaming. Since day 1. I've always like PC gaming also. I've never had a top of the range gaming PC but recently, i've been thinking about getting one. I've read all different things where people say that PC gaming is 10x as good as console gaming. People see it as a massive investment over 3/4 years before upgrading.

I've always loved PC games but not sure whether it'll be worth spending a couple of grand on a massively good PC, when I have 3 consoles sitting in my room. (XB1, PS4, WiiU).

What are peoples thoughts on PC gaming, anybody got any recommendations or any stories or anything in relation.

I have read that PCSpecalists is a great website to use to order one. Anybody used them, etc?

Paradoxes and Hypocrisies of the EU referendum debate

Just for a little light relief. I'll kick off with a view of the most obvious ones;

1. Racists are going to vote overwhelmingly for Brexit, despite the fact that this will close the door on hundreds of thousands of white christian immigrants who can easily return home and open it to hundreds of thousands of non-white, non-christian ones who will almost certainly stay.

Match Updates: England v Slovakia

Apparently England are going to make a load of changes for this game, including possibly the full backs. It's reported we could make as many as six changes.

Anyone else think this is a good idea or a bad one?

For me, bad idea.

What you gain is far outweighed by what you could lose.

What can be done to install Brighton to their rightful place in the PL?

dimanche 19 juin 2016

Perennial failure despite hundreds of millions of pounds of 'investment' have caused CEO OF THE YEAR Paul Barber to press the panic button as the pressure mounts on him to drag his carcass of a club into the PL.

He has drawn up a number of 'ingenious' proposals designed to benefit the third placed club in future playoff tournaments. This coincides with the latest outrageous miscarriage of justice that was Brighton's latest playoff failure, following a season in which they finished third.

My concern is that this might not be enough to counteract BHAFC's tendency towards heroic, tragic, hilarious failure. In fact, those plans could end up making them look even more like twats.

No, more robust contingencies need to be put into place. Getting Brighton into the PL has become a labour of love akin to building the Great Wall of China. I feel it will take the collective intellectual might of the BBS to devise new innovations that might finally facilitate Brighton's elevation to the elite footballing division.

To kick things off...

1) the goal at which Brighton shoot during the playoffs should be three times larger than their opponent's

2) an embargo on yellow and red cards being unfairly brandished towards innocent BHAFC players such as Stephens, and of course, Dunk.

3) a ban on singing for opposition fans. There are some supporters of other clubs for which the successful singing of songs is almost a regular occurrence. They don't even reminisce about it happening! Very disconcerting for Brighton fans and players alike

4) let Bruno score, at least once. You know, like when adults let a 5 year old kid join in. He's such a nice guy, we don't want him to start crying again

....

Suggestion: Philip Billing

Big Danish CM at Huddersfield. Young and very promising. Could be one for the future? Recently signed a contract extension but still shouldn't cost too much. Got a Town mate who really rates him.

Speakers for my wedding - question

Hi All,

I'm getting married in a few weeks. Instead of having a DJ or band, I have an iPod. I intend to play the music in the evening through some kind of speaker set up.

This is my problem. I don't know anything about it and it all seems a bit technical. I'd rather buy some speakers and then keep or sell on than rent via the venue.

I don't want to spend more than £200. Is it possible to get a 'satisfactory' sound out of this for a room for about 70 people to dance to, without being excessively loud? Is anyone able to advise what I should be looking to buy? (i.e. a subwoofer plus others, or just 2 big bricks and connect them up).

(I do have an 80W Marshall guitar amp too, but don't know how you could get this linked up) Thanks for any advice.

Dream line-up

Just a bit of fun :) Picture the scene. It's opening day at home to WBA. What would your ideal line up be from the players we have so far been linked with over on Transfer Hotline and our current players.

Mine would be as follows:

Begovic

Ward Dann Tomkins Santon

Cabaye Mcarthur

Bolasie Arnautović Zaha

Berahino

Think that side would get us Top 8!

Match Updates: Switzerland v France

Start of the final round of group games.

Kick off 8:00
Live on BBC One

If you have not seen the thread from Louis these are the permutations from Group A tonight. It's from the UEFA website (To view the link you have to Register or Login) where you can find information for all groups.

Group A

Sunday 21:00CET: Switzerland (4pts) v France (6, qualified), Romania (1) v Albania (0)

France are through and will finish first with victory or a draw.
Switzerland will clinch second place with a draw or first with victory. If they lose, Romania can overtake them on goal difference or then goals scored, or if still equal, disciplinary rankings; if that too is equal, Switzerland have the edge in the coefficient rankings.
To come second on goal difference or goals scored, Romania must win and hope Switzerland lose. If Romania draw they still have a mathematical chance of being one of the best four third-placed teams.
Albania have to win and hope to be among the four best third-placed sides.

If you want to watch Albania v Romania that will be shown on BBC Four. The match thread is available here: To view the link you have to Register or Login.

Please Help Save Purley!!

Another planning application has been submitted for the Purley Cross site, and this time it's even higher than before. Currently standing at 17 storeys with a combined total of 220 residential units and growing. The proposed build is divided into 3 phases, work starting in Oct 2016 and to be completed in 2021...yes 5 years of building works in the centre of Purley :veryangry

Totally out of character, ruining the skyline, causing traffic chaos and delays, additional pollution and noise for locals, small local businesses being affected, continual high rise buildings making Purley into an inner city eye-sore, house prices affected, exacerbating the flooding problems for all residents amongst many other negative reasons. :veryangry

This giant erection is being proposed by the Baptist Church, and part of the plan is to build a new 500 seater church...have they not read about the Tower of Babel??

Please take a few moments to contact Croydon to highlight your objections:

It might not make any difference as this is recommended by the Planning Committee for approval, but with a large out-cry of disapproval, they might think again.

The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild

I thought this probably deserved a thread of its own. Watched a video earlier with Eiji Aonuma but stopped as felt it was showing too much of the start of the game for my liking. It looks amazing though and my first thoughts after watching that new video was that it feels to me that it's Twilight Princess x Wind Waker with a splash of Xenoblade Chronicles X. I say that as in XCX you do a lot of hunter gather stuff, and it has a futuristic feel to it a bit like those weird pattern things in TP.

I imagine that the game will probably be a release game for the NX, or certainly released very close after. Not heard of any Mario game in the Pipeline so this has to be an early release. I am also interested apart from graphics what the differences will be between Wii U and NX releases. Obviously everything we have seen thus far is from the Wii U version of the game.

Rumour: Aaron Tshibola

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Aaron Tshibola is said to be at the centre of a transfer tug of war involving several clubs.

The talented Reading midfielder burst onto the scene last season with some impressive performances having been given a chance in the first-team by Steve Clarke.

But injury curtailed his campaign, limiting him to just one appearance from the turn of the year.

Tshibola underwent hamstring surgery in February but is now back to full fitness and Reading fans are eagerly awaiting his return in pre-season.

But HITC Sport claim that the 21-year-old could well be on his way out of Madejski Stadium before the 2016/17 campaign gets underway.

They state that Premier League side Crystal Palace want to take him to Selhurst Park, but also that Championship clubs are in the hunt.

England band play at Euro 2016

I thought the fans had told them to fxxk off. They kill the atmosphere.

Irony lost on Britain First.

Obviously until we know the facts, conjecture about the tragic death of Jo Cox and the reasons for / behind it will rule and people will try and make their own narrative as to why what happened did. Many academics have studied the importance of humans making up their own narrative or how we 'story' events in order to try and understand the world. In fact it is believed that to narrativise (made up word of the day) is natural human behaviour. What is certain, an individuals narrative or take on events is influenced by other's narratives, be it a group narrative of individual person's.

Britain First's narrative has branded all Labour MP's as "Treacherous Scum" (multiple times, you can still find their posts for this), they state in their Manifesto that "traitors will face justice at the end of a rope" (their exact words - effectively they are stating they will murder their opposition) and they hold "Activist Training Camps" featuring knife-combat skills.

BF can claim whatever they want when they distance themselves from the murder of Jo Cox, but they have deliberately stoked a minority of people into a frenzy over immigration, Islam and the EU. Whether this influenced Jo Cox's killer remains to be seen.

The irony lost on Britain First is that they are moaning about all of them being tarnished because of the actions of one deranged person. Lee Rigby's killer was/is mentally unstable, but his religion was used to further anti Muslim feeling. Britain First did their utmost to ensure that this narrative became others narrative too.

Does anyone else not care about England?

I just can't seem to get any kind of excitement watching England. Palace will always be more important for me. Found myself supporting Wales with their Palace contingent. I normally hate the England players when playing Palace so find it hard to be cheering for Rooney et al.

Add the moronic hooligan element and it makes me feel very negative about England.

Anyone else feel the same?

Suggestion: Quality Players

For next Season we need to bring in at least 6 quality players.

2 Defenders, one being an experienced centre half
2 midfielders and 2 strikers

If we are to progress, this is what we now need to do. hopefully we will be able to bring in one or two players from our youth setup.

We have got to stop looking at buying average championship players, and bring in at least one or two class players, otherwise we will get no where.

Rumour: Pardew' Mystery Player

Was mentioned on the Jonny Williams thread, but probably deserves it's own one.

Pardew in his Daily Mail column mentioned about scouting a player.

"I’m not giving you any secrets but there is a player who has played already that I’ve scouted six times."

Wonder who he is talking about?

Suggestion: Sub Forum for national/International fans

I know we get the odd thread in GPD about fan meet ups for games and 'Are there any Palace fans in xxxx' from fans who don't live in London or nearby.

It could be a good idea to have a sub forum somewhere where people can post under 'North West' thread 'North East' Thread etc and somewhere not so local Palace fans can arrange gatherings and greetings etc.

Just an idea. :p

Fixtures

Optimistically we could be top 5 by Xmas but pessimistically if we aren't safe by April then likely to go down.

Eagles north of the border

mardi 14 juin 2016

I'm moving to Scotland in July
I just wondered if there was an active palace supporters scene up there
Travelling or watching games ?

20 years on Blur or Oasis ? or...

Just been listening to a few old tunes on You Tube and cannot believe for a start i am this old and these tunes are as well. Was just wondering not really who is best between these two although Oasis songs seem to have aged better but who you were listening to at the time.
I was a total Jarvis Cocker fan at the time and still listen to the His N Hers album and Different Class with much affection and happy memories. But you had so many great bands in those days ,some for just a year or so but Radiohead,Echobelly,Ash,Dodgy,Shed Seven,Suede,Smashing Pumpkins,Supergrass,James,Sleeper,Boo Radleys,Placebo,Catatonia,Manic street preachers,Super furry animals,Primal Scream,Massive attack,Tricky ,Fat boy slim as well as Pink Floyd doing their amazing Pulse tour and the countless other acts.
Glastonbury in those days was a superstar line up from the lesser stages to the big and a feast for music lovers, nowadays you get imported american bollocks blah blah but we really were on top of the world in those days.
The 90's made the 60's look like the 50's.Hence why there was no violence at the 96 euro's we were all to e'd up we just wanted to love haha.
