Discussion: Charlie Austin & Leroy Fer

dimanche 31 mai 2015

I think that these would add to what we already have and a reasonable cash + player offer could swing it.

I was thinking of Gayle, Campbell and maybe another if needs be. Can't decide who that might be that QPR would want.

If Fer and Austin are around £20m, it could be players + £8-10m.

Good business or not?

Premier League stars' racist orgy shame caught on camera during Thailand end of seaso

the 3 clowns should be ashamed of themselves.

Warning: This video contains racist language and scenes of a sexual nature
To view the link you have to Register or Login

It was supposed to be a Premier League club’s end-of-season tour to promote goodwill in the homeland of its proud Thai billionaire owners.

But three of Leicester City’s budding stars blew that apart with a vile orgy in which a local girl was racially abused soon after the team arrived in Bangkok.

As team boss Nigel Pearson prepared for a week of helping to cement *relationships between the UK and Thailand and boosting his club’s growing Far East fan base, his defender son James, 21, and pals Tom Hopper, a striker, and goalkeeper Adam Smith, 22, had other ideas.

They were busy filming three Thai girls committing depraved sex acts with them in a hotel room.

The swaggering trio then shared the explicit videos with friends back in the UK in which one of the players can be heard calling a woman a “slit eye” while his mates snigger at the racist jibe.

The girls taking part in the orgy were also taunted as “minging” while the naked players – all on the fringe of Leicester’s first team – make other sickening comments about them too explicit to be printed here.

Concerned officials at Leicester City were made aware of the scandal....................

Relegation odds 2015/16

Just seen the odds. Despite two great mid table finishes we are 5/1 to go down.

Madness. Still, they think we stand a better chance of staying up than villa Leicester and west brom
Lump on manager less hammers at 7/1. I can't understand stoke at only 9/1
If you thought beating Everton in the league table means we will be viewed as "big" think again
The toffees are 66/1. Worth a fiver:lux::lux:

Rumour: Eric Lamela

In the sun today that Spurs may use Lamela or Townsend as part of a cash/player swap deal for yala.

Rumour: Alex McCarthy and Dame N'Doye

In other news:

The People is reporting that we're competing with West Brom for N'Doye of Hull; and want to buy goalkeeper Alex McCarthy from QPR.

Wow. 40 years.

Still one of my top 10 films of all times. I accept that perhaps the model Shark they used in it looks a tad dated now but at time, and as a 9/10 year old, it scared the living poo out of me.

My Dad took me to see it up at the Elephant & Castle and it was the first time that I saw a film that completely mesmerised me. The story is as old as the hills (just a remake of Beowulf when all is said and done) but it shows how that does not matter. Must be something deep inside us all about the sea and monsters.

One of the true greats.

Tony Pulis to leave WBA

Paddy Power will give you 11/4 for Tony Pulis not to be in charge for WBA's first game of next season.

I'll have some of that...

Suggestion: Curtis Davies

Didn't really see much of him last season but he was class in the 2013/14 season.

would he be a decent addition?

would like to see him or Caulker alongside Dann

Los Angeles airport stop over (6hr)

Hello good people of the BBS, especially those of you based in USA / Los Angeles.

I fly into LA in September en route to Vegas. I have a 6hr airport stop. LA Airport has 'nothing' to do.

I am thinking I will try and grab an UBER / Taxi to Venice Beach. Spend a couple of hrs and then head back to the airport. I'd prefer to dump my bag somewhere as well.

Does anyone know if this would be feasible? Based on traffic in LA etc, I don't want to get caught out. Any local knowledge would be great.

Thanks - A fellow Eagle in Australia!

Cheers :lux: :p

137:

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Rumour: Dann to Everton

Everton are closing in on a deal for Crystal Palace defender Scott Dann.

The centre-half was monitored by scouts from Goodison Park throughout an impressive season with the Eagles.

And Everton chiefs are hopeful they could now tie-up a deal in the coming weeks.

They have been looking into various new options but believe the 28-year-old defender, who was born on Merseyside, would fit in well with their side for next term.

The experienced Dann is the club captain at Selhurst Park and has two years remaining on his Palace deal.

However, Alan Pardew would undoubtedly fight to hold on to the club’s player of the year.

Thanks in advance

Aston Villa down next season

Having finished in one of the 4 places above the relegation zone for the last four seasons I think I will have to have a sneaky bet on them to go down.

I think any decent players they have will be off and they wont be able to attract or be given the dosh to spend on decent replacements.

SCORM

Has anyone any experience of developing any eLearning tools that are SCORM compliant.

I've been working with a client developing some media assets (video, audio, animations) to be used within their learning tools but I've just been asked if I can develop the whole project this time. I believe they use Cornerstone-on-demand for the hosting/access but I am hoping I can use Adobe Captivate and export a SCORM compliant file.

Anyone able to give me any advice, tips, pitfalls?

Much appreciated.

Old players playing football

Looking at the photos from Julian Speroni's testimonial something struck me.

You look at the likes of Alan Pardew in a suit on the touchline, and he looks fit, trim, and ready to turn out for the team - then you see him in the kit, play 30 minutes, and he looks old, fat, and unfit... same with all the old players. Even John Salako for God's sake he looks fat and old!

Been there, done this myself - thinking I can still do this, look good in the mirror etc, but in reality dieing after 10 (well 3 actually) minutes and look fat and gray in the photos.

I guess it really makes you appreciate how fit professional players are these days (and young)... or probably were always.

Why do players always look old on TV despite being 25?

Voting closes 14th June.

Google translate:
StarAfrica Launches Awards to reward the best African players who shone in the different European leagues during the 2014-2015 season.

Whether Liga in Serie A in the Bundesliga in Premier League or Ligue 1 , African players have many honored their continent by offering us a beautiful season full of goals and beautiful moments. In France, the performance of Aymen Abdennour ( AS Monaco ), André Ayew ( Marseille ) and Max-Alain Gradel ( St Etienne ) have terrified all the counters. While striker Crystal Palace, Yannick Bolasie , took the lion's share to the Premier League especially after his historic face Sunderland tripled few days of the end of the championship. Not to mention the dynamo of FC Porto, Yacine Brahimi , who starred both at Portuguese league or in the Champions League

Travel advice

Okay looking for some helpful advice here.

I have an exam 10 mins walk from Victoria on 11 June (thanks very much strikers for doing this to me after 6 months of hard studying)

I was thinking of getting a national express the early evening of the day before from either Horsham where I live or Guildford where I work and staying in a hotel. The other alternative I was considering is driving up to somewhere like Wimbledon and then getting the tram but this means parking for about 24 hours. The exam starts at 10am.

Does anyone have any experience of getting in during the strikes that can offer helpful advice? Hoping they are called off obviously but need to get a contingency plan in place.

Pre-Season Open Days

Ok, so had the questions to CPFC2010 thread still existed I would have put this in there, but it doesn't so i have started a thread, hopefully no one minds. At Jule's testimonial on Tuesday my mate and had just been in the car park clubshop when we saw a mobbed Jules going into the players lounge. Being my favourite player i would have loved a picture with him but it would not have been possible. So it got me thinking back to the days when the club had an open day. They used to be a great day where players were scattered around the car park and in the ground so that you could get their autograph and a photo with them. The clubshop was open with the new kits on sale, food places open to keep everyone refreshed, you could go in the changing rooms and the board room so i was able to do the player walk out of the tunnel and touch the ZDS cup and a play-off trophy on display in the boardroom and then there was a marquee on the pitch set up for interviews. It enabled you to hear from current players and get to see new signings and was generally a good day full of colour.

So, given the great state of the club, all the improvements Steve Parish has made around the ground, and the joy of two great seasons in the Prem, could these open days not make a return? I know last season with the under-soil heating being installed a marquee would not have been possible, but otherwise i have no idea why they stopped happening and why they have never returned.

Would people want to see this type of day make a return? Would it be possible?

Clyne sell in fee?

Was there one in place? Liverpool linked with £10m move but rejected might be more. I hope we have 10-20%

Crystal Palace & Dundee Considering Formal Link

Just saw this article and have commented on it via my Twitter account. Views? Both on the link (which I think would be a good idea) and the notion that testimonials should always be nothing less than a celebration where both sets of fans get on. I've never known anything less. After all, what's to kick off about?

To view the link you have to Register or Login

PS My comment seems to be awaiting moderation, so here it is

"Agree that it would be a great idea, but would hope that whoever Palace played in a testimonial, positive interaction and goodwill between both sets of fans would be to the fore. In fact it would be very sad if a game that’s purely meant to be a celebration of a player’s career was tarnished by anything less than impeccable behaviour and the type of loud and passionate support that was witnessed on Tuesday night."

Set pieces

It's been well documented that we had the most goals from set pieces this season. 19 in the end joint with West Brom (surprise surprise). This despite us bemoaning the quality of our corner delivery for what seems like forever.

Something that occurred to me during the game on Sunday was that for the middle half hour we had Dann, Hangeland, Jedinak, Chamakh and Murray all on the pitch at once (not to mention a giant keeper).

That should be a terrifying prospect for a team to try to defend corners and the ilk against - simply having enough defensive players who can match up to them is probably impossible for most teams.

In paper at least we should be at least as threatening as the old days of Thorn, Young etc.

Extending my house Advice Sought

mercredi 27 mai 2015

I'm planning next year to do a big extension on my house which will involve remodeling the whole place. I've got a 2 bed semi at the moment and the extension will more than double the size (so I have will a lot more room to play with than i'm used to).

I'm looking for any ideas that you would do If you had the opportunity and a clean slate. Really what I want is fresh ideas from people that I might think wow that's great I'll steal that.

It can be extravagant or just practical any ideas would be good to hear really.

I've thought about cat 6 cabling around the house and trying to get up to speed on anything else i might need to make it as future proof as possible.

emergency! jnr palace kit needed.

ok, it's been a while since i've been on here, but this is an emergency!
My mate (a palace fan who doesn't use this forum) called me today panicing because his 3 year old son Leo
wants a football kit, trouble is, the club shop have none left,
"not a problem" you may think!," just wait for the new kits to come out",
the problem is that his missus said "just get him a Chelsea or Man U kit, he won't mind", and my mate is worried that she'll go and waste
her money on one of these rags, and ruining poor Leo's life at the same time, so.......
has anyone out there got a palace kit for a 3 year old, he ain't after a freeby,
just want his son in the correct colours.

Who's story is the best?

Of our players that is. Thinking about it, we've got a fair few in the squad who have got some really interesting backgrounds. You've got Bolassie who has played in Malta, and Puncheon, Murray with similar stories about working their way up to the top.

Speroni at first was basically written off after a few seasons where he didn't get a look in, but had his career completed changed when Warnock took over in 2007.

But I'd say Delaney is the one. A second tier journeyman who had just been released from Ipswich and was considering quitting the game completely. 3 years later and he's an accomplished Premier League centre back. I doubt that anyone ever saw that coming.

Europa League Final

Does anyone care about this? I didn't even realise it was tonight until someone told me earlier.

I will be hoping Sevilla win, been an admirer of them since I went to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan 9 years ago. Also they are on a double having beat Benfica last season, a feat they achieved in 2005/06 and 2006/07.

Discussion: Aatif Chahechouhe

Bit of a random one but French Moroccan midfielder not tall, can score would be cheap, 28.

Discussion: Arkadiusz Milik

Why did noone show any interest in this dude - 21 yrs old Polish so would fit in very well in UK and 11 goals in 21 appearances for Ajax? (Just signed permanently for Ajax - ex Bayern Levekusen)

Also in general how come so few Polish players in top English sides? Just not very good or soemthing else since you would have thought Englad would be an attractive place to come?

The Legend that is Steve Parish

A Went to Wembley at the weekend with my mate’s 4 Club Wembley seats and wasn’t allowed in as the tickets didn’t cover the play off final!!

Steve Parish had exactly the same problem and was at the next window along being told his Club Wembley cards weren’t valid for this match. He managed to use his contacts at the FA to get literally the last 2 seats in Wembley for him and his mate. He then noticed that I had brought 2 Boro fans along with me and offered the tickets to us for face value and said he’d go home as he would prefer the tickets to go to proper fans.

So we bought them off him and my 2 Boro mates went in!

What a ledge. I tweeted him and he got back to me…

Jedi in Ptremiership team of the year

Just announced based on statistics, but shows despite the calls for his head he is still something special

Another captain that makes the team is Crystal Palace's Mile Jedinak. Despite playing just 24 games this term, the Australian made the most interceptions of any midfielder (82) and also won the fourth most aerial duels too (106).

Suggestion: Charlie Adam

Worth a bid superb Midfielder. Beast defensively and has a superb range of passing. Also has goals in him. Might be worth a bid. Hope Pards had words with him after the testimonial.

Dundee FC

mardi 26 mai 2015

In light of their magnificent following at Jules' testimonial tonight, I think there are several thousand Palace fans that will want to keep their eye on how The Dark Blues from Dens Park are getting on.

For starters, Dundee made the semis of the European Cup in the 60s. And they've won 3 Scottish cups.

I for one will be looking out for their results from here on in.

Come on you Dark Blues!!!!

Howe Manager of the Year.

Quote:

Howe is only the second manager from outside the top flight to win the award since 1992, emulating then-Reading boss Steve Coppell  in 2006.
Fair play to him.

It wasn't a vintage year for managers in the Prem. Mourinho got the award and, to be fair, Chelsea lead from start to finish so he probably deserved it. However, I think that the outstanding performance was by one Alan Pardew:
  • With him, Newcastle were 9th; without, they avoided relegation on the last day.
  • Without him, Palace were 19th; after his arrival, we rose to the top half of the table.
  • Add together the points earned by his two sides without him, and they are the worst teams in the league but add their points with him and he'd be in Europe next season (subject to Arsenal beating Villa.)

Best away support ever?

Wow! The Dundee fans are something else.....:p

Steve Parish and Alan Pardew fan address

Hi people of the BBS,

I'm interviewing the Chairman and Manager this evening and the idea is to put questions to them from fans. Please let me know if you have anything you'd like me to ask and I'll do my best to read out the good ones. I know it's short notice, but would need them by 5pm today.

Cheers!

Selling a business

Hi All,

Long time reader here, don't post much though!

I was wondering if any one on the BBS had ever sold a business?, and if so was the procedure relatively easy?. There are a myriad of companies offering business valuations online, but it would be good if anyone on here had any recommendations.

It's a sole trader company, established 17 years, profitable every year, never borrowed money, no debts.

Thanks

Visit to a Hajduk Split game

I've just come back from a holiday in Crotia and thought you might be interested in a review of my visit to Hajduk Split vs. NK Zagreb - Hajduk Split are another team that play in the red and blue stripes :p.

Club shop - there is one in the city as well as the ground - with everything from tops to seat cushions. ability to buy tickets at the either shop and get the ticket straightaway.

Club decorated walls - they are all over the region not just the town. It would be great if Croydon council would agree to do something like this!

The ground - nothing particularly special and a low crowd. I was going to do a stadium tour (every day except the day of and day before game day). Tickets were 40-60 kuna - £4 or £6!! I was able to have a beer at my seat and there seemed to be no segregation - that or Zagreb didn't bother to turn up!

Seats were just back and bottom parts in the concrete. They were filthy so we followed the locals by sitting

on the lidl leaflets! A nice touch that season ticket holders have their names on their seats - and stops the casual fan sitting there.

The crowd - for a small attendance it was very passionate all around the ground. They have a small area similar to the HF. Plenty of banners and chanting with a drum, the odd universal football chant and a couple of flares.

Video link To view the link you have to Register or Login

The game - I would probably describe it as mid to low-end Championship level. The stand out player by far was Nikola Vlašić, a 17year old winger who loved the ball at his feet. I'm happy to give CPFC2010 a full scouting review or be a full-time scout for them at the right price ;-)

He scored the only goal of the game - a nicely struck volley

The people were really friendly - I almost got a bear hug from a local when they scored! Would definitely recommend to anyone else thinking about heading to Split during the football season.

Next season fixtures and dates

FFS - I'm bored already with the season being over and are already looking forward to start of the next.

When are the fixtures released for 15/16 season and when does it start? I'm sure I heard somewhere that it was starting 2 - 3 weeks earlier than normal but could be wrong.

TIA

Selhurst Super Draw on Sunday

Does anyone remember the Super Draw number from Sunday? I've checked the official site but the last game they have is the Hull match

Mobile Internet

Got to get a National Express coach on Friday for 5 hours, but desperately need to do some work on my laptop. I need the internet on my laptop but there's no wifi on the coach.

What's the best route of getting internet on my laptop? It doesn't need to be fast, and I'm not going to use very much data at all, but it needs to be consistent (as consistent as you can get whilst on a coach) and I really only need it for that day (maybe 4 days max) so I'd like to avoid buying something or subscribing to something long term.

I was considering tethering the 3G/4G from my phone via USB (contract with 3) but I need to call them to let me activate the tethering option so I thought I'd ask here first if anyone had any better and more reliable options?

Quest?

lundi 25 mai 2015

Is anyone familiar with quest? Like as a company to work with? I have been hearing a lot about them and decided to send in my application. Does anyone have first hand info just to give me a better idea what to expect if I am called in for an interview? :D

Discussion: Is Sanogo a no-go?

Presumably we'll be offered him so I suppose it's worth discussing whether or not he's worth a punt and at what price?

He hasn't set the world on fire but is he truly awful either - worth persisting with for a couple of years?

I'll go and find me tin hat now. :D

The Magnificent Seven

As many of us are using this time to reflect on the unlikely events of the past few years, I want to say thank you to the "Magnificent Seven":

Jules
Damo
Wardy
Mile
Wilf
Yala
FFS

No less than seven Championship players from the 2013-14 season played a significant role in reaching the top half of the toughest division in the world some two seasons later (an eternity in the game today).

While it took a while for all seven to simultaneously start and win a game (due to Zaha's United spell, Murray's injury and loan spell, the Asian and African Cups and Jedinak's suspensions etc.), the victory at West Ham this season was particularly gratifying because all seven started and won.

During the off season, there have already been and will continue to be numerous rumours about some of the seven departing. Some may even turn out to be true. Who knows?

When some of the 1990 FA Cup Final players recently got together to celebrate the 25th anniversary, I could not help but think how great it would be to get these seven together 25 years from now (together with Punch, Dann, McLedley and King Chamakh etc. and a 78 year old Pards).

But maybe, just maybe, they will all get together again this August and push towards Europe. How unlikely would that be?

I know there is no room for sentimentality in football.

Or is there? Maybe just a little bit?

First time mortgage advice

My eldest daughter is just about to get on the property ladder but has found to get more house for her bucks she has been looking at ones that need some work done, not total referbs but kitchen bathrooms Carpets and decor.

As I'm now out of the mortgage game and spent 25 years paying it off and have not had to apply for a mortgage for some time not sure what the format is.

My question is, they have 5% deposit and help to buy get another 20% from the Gov. and have a mortgage in principle. The houses they are looking at are lower then the amount in principle but they will need the difference to do the house up.

How does this work to borrow more then the current value of the house but not more then the finished value of the house.

Hope that all made sense?

Never has this saying been so fitting:

"I do hope he gets this back, bit low scummish really"

History suggests we will almost certainly stay up next season

This table shows where each team relegated from the Premier League finished the season before. It suggests that, in general, the higher up the league a team finishes, the less likely they are to be relegated the following season.

1st - 0
2nd - 0
3rd - 0
4th - 0
5th - 1
6th - 1
7th - 1
8th - 3
9th - 2
10th - 1
11th - 1
12th - 7
13th - 3
14th - 4
15th - 3
16th - 2
17th - 9
18th - 0
19th - 2
1st Champs - 9
2nd Champs - 8
P/O Champs - 12

The only team to be relegated having finished 10th the previous year is Crystal Palace(!!!) who went down in the first season of the PL having placed 10th in the last year of the old First Division. The biggest fall from grace is Ipswich who went from 5th in 2000/01 under George Burley to 17th in 2001/02.

Championship play off winners have been relegated 12 out of 23 times so far. There has only been two seasons when all three promoted teams stayed up - but also only one season when all three promoted teams went back down.

Teams that just stay up (17th and 19th place) often struggle the following season.

Observer fans verdict on best away fans

In the Observer, a supporter from each Premier League team was asked to rate their season including best and away fans. No surprises who came top:
> Everton - Palace were the loudest visitors we had at Goodison
> Liverpool - Crystal Palace fans were pretty good: they stayed behind to acknowledge Gerrard in his last game, and they've been at the forefront of the cheaper tickets campaign
> QPR - Crystal Palace were by far the best - a noisy bunch who didn't stop for 90 minutes
> Southampton - Palace made noise, plenty of others didn't
> Stoke - Crystal Palace were the best visitors
> Swansea - The best were Crystal Palace again - they didn't shut up all match
> West Ham - Crystal Palace were noisy

The only dissenter was:
> Chelsea - The worst - surprisingly - were Palace

No resting on laurels then...

2014-15 review

After the final day Premier League results I thought I'd share a few facts.....

After 38 games Palace have had 13 wins this season scoring 47 goals conceding 51 and put 48 point on the scoreboard.

After 46 games Brighton have had 10 win this season scoring 44 goals conceding 54 and put 47 points on the scoreboard.

So playing 8 more games in a lower division Brighton had 3 less wins, scored 3 less goals, conceded 3 more and scored 1 less point.

Thank you for the memories of the 2014-15 season!

Guard of Honor - When did this start

dimanche 24 mai 2015

I have never seen this at a football match until Palace gave one with Liverpool for Gerrard, then the following week WBA gave one for Chelsea.

Firstly is this a new thing? I just wonder if we were in relegation battle whether its the right preparation to be clapping the other team onto the pitch, if thats is true then surely any match that isnt a friendly or testimonial where points are at stake shouldnt be approached like this. Chelsea will get enough priase with open top bus rides etc, if its a new thing it fits in with the over sensitisation of football more in line with US sports.

I know both Palace and WBA won the game but all teams didnt really have much to for play but regardless this doesnt prove that will always happen. It made me feel sick seeing palace line up because I couldnt care less that another teams player is afraid of not starting every week and heading for a payday. If Ive paid for a ticket I want to see my team crush theirs.

Can you recommend a portable music device?

Yo

What I'm after is a small device that I can take running with me to listen to music in place of my giant brick of a phone which is uncomfortable over long distance.

Must be capable of playing content from sites such as Napster and Audible. MP3 as well would be good. Must also have Bluetooth so I can connect to my wireless headphones.

And finally, must be as small as possible.

Is there anything out there that does the job or am I better off getting a second smaller phone for running?

Thanks

Next Season Expectations?

So, after finishing 11th and 10th in the last two seasons, what position would everyone be happy with next season? For me, still 17th is the goal and I would be exponentially happier for every place above that.

Drinks at matches

I was stopped at the Swansea match for trying to take a bottle of Fanta into the Arthur. I had removed the cap as has been required since we returned to the Prem, but oh no, I couldn't take that in because the cap's been removed - for heaven's sake! I put the cap back on. Still can't take it in as the seal has been broken. I drink some to prove its not a Molotov cocktail or 500ml of pure urine. No, still can't take it in as 'it's the rules'. Since when? The Manure game, perhaps, to stop Our number 7 showing off?

I was told by a steward previously, under the old rule, that tops were not allowed on bottles as the bottles, if dropped or placed on the ground, are easily rolled underfoot and could cause an accident whereas an open bottle just crushes. It was a bit ridiculous as everyone knows that spare tops were carried in pockets and put straight back on inside the ground. Also, I don't recall a plethora of accidents when we were in the Championship and you could more or less take in what you wanted. But this isn't just a relaxation on the rule it is an about face requiring the opposite.

Swansea fans Causing trouble

I was in block u and the amount of piss fans in the Swansea end was a joke young kids like 17 acting big men have to laugh :lux: 3 times it kicked off with the stewards taking people away few coins was chucked and hit bloke on his head not good when kids are about ie i had a 17 year old stand up to me I just told him to sit down did not wanna put him in a&e for the nite :p

Trouble in the arthur

Good turnout by Swansea fans but what set them off?

Was it me or did Hangeland look like he had spent all year at Barcelona?

Just how good was he today ?The passing, tackling, everything looked world class.

Or maybe I am being silly?

Thank You CPFC Players

Not going to start calling them out individually but what a team.

I know a lot gets said about Pardew, Parsish etc but at the end of the day it's the players that have to go out there and perform.

They never stopped competing even under Warnock and we owe a lot to an obviously great team spirit.

Also, I'm on my 5th ESB in a very staunch QPR pub.

Happy days indeed.

Getting in the Ground

Sorry to moan on such a lovely Palace day, but this is beyond a joke now.

The way it's been for a few seasons now, is that if you turn up to the ground with a bottle of water or coke or something, they make you take the lid off before letting you in. This is pretty crap anyway, as I buy my drink to drink, not throw at the opposition.

But today upon getting to the ground, I was told I couldn't take my drink in at all, even if I took the cap off. So it was stand at the side and neck it, or pour it out on the floor. This is pathetic, as not only is it over the top, but they sell bottled drinks in the ******* ground! So what, are we now only allowed to have food and drink if the ground sell it?

Added to this, you get patted down before every game (I'm surprised they still don't have the metal detectors) and have to show your season ticket 3 times to get to your bloody seat. Starting to get sick and tired of being treated like a criminal when trying to watch the team I pay good money to support, at their home ground.

Got to love the BBC. It loses 1 million listeners for its radio 1 breakfast show and the controller of radio 1 congratulates the DJ for scaring off the 'over 30's'.

Words fail me. I support the licence fee and think the BBC does more good than it does harm but it strikes me that it is intent of killing itself with this sort of attitude.

Suggestion: Dan Bentley (Southend)

Just a suggestion, and not just based on yesterday, but over the last two seasons, this guy has looked fantastic in goal for Southend. Mate of mine who regularly goes to watch them raves about him all the time too.

Worth a go for long term? Sign him and loan him back for a season whilst we still have Jules / Hennessey, possibility of a loan to a Championship the season after?

Certainly looks a lot more exciting and probably cheaper prospect than the likes of Ruddy, Butland, Smithies etc who keep getting suggested.

Lib Dems U-Turn on Tuitin fees

Plenty made of that, what about Labour announcement today that they will back an in/out referendum on Europe?

Palace staff (and supporters) help autistic child find his voice

A heart-warming letter from a mother to the club thanking them and explaining how her child who has Autism has been helped by the staff at Palace and also the supporters.

"So we now have a young man, who regularly asks to leave the house to go and practice his Puncheon corners or his Zaha runs. I have just had a meeting with his school who have said this year he has started to speak out in class and has recently given a class presentation which is incredible. Which I think is without doubt the result of coming to Selhurst Park."

Pardew Press Conference - Pre Swansea

1) team news - all fit and well
2) on Julian Speroni - is an icon here - wont start on sunday so fans need to come to his testimonial on Tuesday
3) on number one keeper - jules in number one and wayne will get a couple of games
4) on speroni - was important we showed faith in him for another season - may have 2 or 3 more
5) we are finalising our end of season reports and will work off them - are 6th in the table since I have been here - we need to build on that next season - this club is moving fast and we need to have a team that moves with it
6) we need more creativity at home and need to unlock the door when teams come and sit
7) we are in a great financial position but a head can be turned - will have to take a lot of money to take one of my players
8) on Bolasie - not many players get clapped off at Anfield - needs to find an end product - would be a mistake for a top club to come and get him - would be too early - fantastic player and love him to bits - he is my magic man
9) wilf's ambition should be to get back to a big club - went to United too early
10) on Zaha and U21's - was Gareth's decision - have no problem
11) moment of the season was beating man city here
12) on manager of the season - jose has won it so must be the right decision
13) Monk, Koeman and me have done a great job
14) on battle at bottom - newcastle is close to my heart - the group of fans need to be in the premier league and get this season out of the way and use the scare as a kick start to move the club forward
15) destiny is in their own hands - Hull result is irrelevant - am sure the stadium will be in tip top shape to get the result they need
16) I left the club with 26 points but they didn't capitalise on the that
17) over three games v Chelsea, United and Liverpool - 3 points was what we deserved - Liverpool were a little weaker - we deserved to beat them and didn't wanna end the season on a low - we will try and win the game on sunday
18) we always want records and have broken a few already
19) we are aiming to try and jump Everton and west ham - we have a great set of players and great staff and that is why in the 18 games i have been here we are 6th in the table - we wont rest on that and need to improve on that
20) we are on the up =- we are a stable club - good finances - have a good manager and staff and can progress players - players have to look at uis like they look at Everton, newcastle and spurs
21) on Garry Monk - when you have a great season a good manager just folds one after the other and he has managed to do that - he plays fantastic football - no noises coming out of there - is a fantastic club and a model premier league team
21) Swansea not the same as us - we are london and a little more energised - we admire them and take our hat off to them
22) helps you understand the soul of a club when you know it from the inside - is an advantage for a manager
23) the key to there success is selecting good managers and players - they have players we envy
24) we are not in for sterling - we are happy with Wilf and Bolasie
25) young players are vulnerable to the big clubs - when they do well then negotiations become delicate - brendan has said his bit - you have be strong in these situations - the club comes first
26) would be silly to think back when I joined that we would have done what we have done - has been a collective effort

Bucket collection at Swansea match

The club, along with tremendous support from the management, have generously allowed the Lily Foundation to be the chosen charity for the Swansea match on Sunday. The players will be helping to raise the charity's profile by wearing Lily t-shirts during their warm up and there will be bucket collections for donations dotted outside the ground.

Lily is a Warlingham based charity with a lot of decent Palace fans at it's core. Absolutely no pressure to donate, but thought I would just put a link to their website so that if anyone wishes to take a look, they can be a little more informed about the charity on the day.

Thanks for reading.

We need to be up there with Everton, Villa & maybe Spurs

From today's press conference. A bold statement of intent from Pardew that I guess reflects what he will say to potential signings...

AP: Players need to look at us and see we're a stable club, we have good finances. We need to be up there with Everton, Villa & maybe Spurs.

AP says Palace are "different to Swansea" but "that doesn't mean we don't admire them".

How far are we away? I suspect Spurs fans may laugh at this but if we take our form into next season, maybe not...

Employment question

Hoping someone can help here.

I started in a position just over 3 months ago in an office. I have done well there but the place is full of drama. Manager keeps crying and walking out amd every single person is bitching at some point. The job is 12-8 and I have to travel for about an hour each way including driving plus walking. To top things off we are very short staffed but my colleague who is the only other full time staff in my area has just been moved to 9-5 without anyone knowing. The issue is not the hours as that's what I signed up to but the fact that everything is so secretive.

However I have just been offered another position 5 minutes from where I live and 8-4 Monday to Friday which allows me to see my kids more.

I have read my contract which says whilst in my 3 month probation I only have to give a weeks notice but after that it's 4 weeks. The new place needs me to start asap. I personally had to push for my 3 month probation amd everyone said they are happy.

Question is, if I didn't sign anything to say I passed my probation can I get away with giving 1 weeks notice. Nothing in the contract says I need to sign anything but surely this is the case? Sorry to go on but it's been a funny 3 months. If I got offered this new job last week I would have definately been ok.

Beard Trimmers

So I purchased a fairly low end of the market Phillips trimmer about 6 months ago, which has suddenly decided it no longer wishes to charge anymore.

Can anyone recommend one that they use which has come with a decent amount of longevity?

My Dad owns a Remington which he claims has been going strong for the best part of 8 years but he hardly uses it which may have something to do with it lasting so long.

Pub for Home and Away - Swansea

What's the best pub for me to drink in with a work colleague, who's a Swansea fan, sensible, but with a strong welsh accent.
I'm guessing most are OK?
Usually drink in the ground but can't this time as he's in the away end.

Any Excel gurus?

I have a spreadsheet problem that I am trying to solve.. and turning to the good ship BBS to see if anyone can help.

I have a spreadsheet as such

A1 Name B1 Class C1 Comment
A2 Joe Bloggs B2 Y1 Red C2 BLANK
A3 Eva Ready B3 Y1 Blue C3 This is a filled cell.

I want to be able to search and return either how many blanks or non blanks there are for each class. So column B may have 10-15 Y1 Red in, I want to match those with column C.

i.e. in the example above, there is 1 BLANK for Y1 Red.

Anyone got any ideas?

15 Year Old Indian Prospect Plays for Palace Academy

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Not necessarily a player we could end up signing, but still a nice story. It's great that Palace is doing things like this, as it builds affection for the club abroad. India is a HUGE market, and tapping into it could be a brilliant move.

I'd like to see something similar done with CPFC Baltimore in the USA (or better yet, one of the US Development Academy clubs that isn't affiliated with an MLS team, such as the current champions PDA).

Suggestion: Mat Ryan

I'm sure he's been mentioned (so please merge with the first thread that recommended him), but an incredible keeper. I was certainly sceptical of his "sweeper keeper" style. Couldn't recommend him more highly.

Trialist: Grant Smith

Quote:

Crystal Palace are weighing up offering a deal to Hayes & Yeading goalkeeper Grant Smith.

The 21-year-old has been on trial with the Eagles for the past four weeks.

Smith, on Brighton’s books until his release in May 2014, kept seven clean sheets in 21 starts in the Conference South.

And he has kept England C international Calum Kitscha out of the non league outfit’s side since he joined in November.

A number of clubs are interested in Smith, who is a free agent.

England Squad

Goalkeepers: Robert Green (Queens Park Rangers), Joe Hart (Manchester City), Tom Heaton (Burnley)

Defenders: Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Chris Smalling (Manchester United)

Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Fabian Delph (Aston Villa), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Ryan Mason (Tottenham Hotspur), James Milner (Manchester City), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool), Andros Townsend (Tottenham Hotspur), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)

Forwards: Charlie Austin (Queens Park Rangers), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal).

How on earth is Jamie Vardy in this squad ahead of Ings or Berahino?

Edit: Just remembered they're both in the under 21 squad. Doesn't matter, Vardy is shit.

Tax Advice: Renting our flat

If any BBSers could help I'd be very grateful - I have the opportunity to work away for a year in the UK and am trying to work out what the tax implications are if I were to take it and rent out our property - there is no relocation settlement just a career opportunity.

Mrs Br5 Eagle and I own our flat in zone 1 (with a mortgage) and are looking at potentially renting somewhere where the rent will be very similar to the rental income we would yield from renting our property out (give or take £100 pcm) but concerned whether this leaves us liable to a tax bill. I know if you are renting you can deduct mortgage interest, wear and tear etc but that would still leave us with a large amount of income which we are unsure if it taxable or not. Can you offset outgoing rent against income? The property we will be renting is our only property.

Any advice would very be most gratefully received.

Palace/Everton playoff?

If we win 2-0 and Everton lose 2-0 we'll have an identical league record.
(If I haven't made foolish calcs here...)

Does it then go to head to head?

We beat them 3-2, they beat us 1-0.
3-3 on aggregate?
We beat them on away goals?!

Not sure what rules are. Could it go to a playoff?

Match Updates: arsenal are shocking

Just amazed they cant break Sunderland down. Its tika without the taka No width and no bravery either. too many simple sideways passes

Autograph opportunity?

Hi all,

Do the lads walk around after being the final game or is it usually a quick wave then off?

we are in the main stand seats 190-1 in row 2

cheers

Wilf Zaha Not Included In The England Under 21 Squad

Wilf has not been selected to play for England in the upcoming European Championships which to my thinking is a travesty as he is a much better option than some of those players that have been selected, some of whom have had their season blighted by injury.

Quote:

It probably doesn’t surprise anyone to know that Brazil’s corrupt soccer federation engaged in corrupt behavior, but these newly released documents are pretty alarming. According to Brazilian paper Estadão, the federation sold all sorts of the Seleção’s economic rights to a marketing firm, including final say on who gets called up and who plays in games.

The various contracts and the negotiations that granted the Cayman Island-based Saudi Arabian front firm ISE these rights are interesting in all their particulars, but the highlight is the company’s power over the squad itself.

Quote:

Per the secret agreement, it was stipulated that the Seleção should always take the field with its main players without any possibility of testing young prospects or using friendlies to prepare the Olympic team. “The CBF will ensure and guarantee that “A Team” players who are playing in official competitions participate in any and every match,” says Article 9.1.

Any violation of this agreement means a lower payment quota. “If it happens that players of any game are not the “A Team,” the rate of payment under the agreement will be reduced by 50%,” states the contract. The CBF is paid $1.05 million per game in accordance with the agreement.

If a player is dropped by injury, for example, the CBF must prove this with a medical certificate to ISE that the athlete is unable to play. “Any changes to the squad shall be communicated in writing to the ISE and confirmed by mutual agreement. In this case, the CBF will endeavor to replace them with a new player of a similar level, with respect to marketing value, technical skills, and reputation.”

Best Speroni saves/performances

In a week we have the testimonial for a genuine Palace legend. There's another thread for various people to moan that he's not as good as Courtois or to decry the fact that we're not playing away at Boca Juniors for his testominal.

But in this thread, let's look back. What are your favourite Jules memories/saves? Obviously the Ashley Barnes and Troy Deeney saves stick in the recent memory, but I'm sure people will have others.

Pricing for a fund raising event.

Mrs ov CPFC is involved in organising a fund raising event for the PTA at our daughters school.

Plan is to go for a 'Take That' tribute band which they have done before, with some success, but they are confused about how to price it with the options as follows..

£10 per ticket to include the band & disco.

£15 per ticket to include the band, disco and a fish and chip supper.

There is a bar which is cheaper than pub prices so it offers a good night out (if this is your sort of thing. Its not mine so I ain't going !) but they are stuck on whether to include the food and go for the higher ticket price. My instincts are to keep it as cheap and cheerful as possible based on aiming to sell it out (200 tickets available) along with not having the additional hassle, and inevitable moans and groans, of the food. They can lay on the usual bar snacks but offering a meal with the ticket seems a bit dated to me.

All ears on this one.

Ian Wright on Danny Baker show

Anyone else see Ian Wright on Danny Baker and Kelly VSPO show on BT Sport last night ? Absolutely brilliant. He could hardly remember any of the hundreds of goals he scored except the first for Palace when Alan Irvine crossed from the right and he headed in at the far post. Anyone else who saw it would remember it too. I have never seen such enthusiasm from a guy on his debut. He picked up the ball and raced halfway down the pitch. As he said he ran along the side of the Arthur Wait cheering all the way. Until he turned up on the Baker/Kelly show I thought he was still running.
And the VSPO show was the funniest show on football, with real fans doing it. Yes I know Baker is a Millwall fan and can't find one good word to say about Palace - but that's how it should be between Millwall and Palace. But the show was great fun. Last night was the last show. Will be sorely missed. Not least for the toaster prediction - 86 % success rate - better than any pundit. What will I base my bets on now ? For the record it predicted a comfortable win for Middlesbrough against Norwich
PS Baker's autobiographical books aren't bad either.

Pardew article on The Times online

Alan Pardew in a happy place at Crystal Palace.

He did not arrive at Selhurst Park brimming with flash ideas and unrealistic ambition. In fact, so cautious was Alan Pardew about taking over at Crystal Palace in January that he fully expected the club to avoid relegation by the skin of their teeth on the last day of the season. He had even pictured the scene. Shola Ameobi, he thought, would score the dramatic winning goal against Swansea City.

It has all panned out rather differently. Ameobi, far from being a crutch for Pardew, has made four appearances as a substitute, and Palace secured their Barclays Premier League status rather earlier than he had imagined. They won their first four games in all competitions under the former Newcastle United manager and after a few minor blips won four league games in succession, including that pulsating victory over Manchester City to complete the job. His team were even self-assured enough to spoil Steven Gerrard’s send-off at Anfield on Saturday.

No wonder, though, that Pardew thought it might be trickier than this. He did not return to southeast London armed with a coaching entourage. He cut a solitary figure as he left St James’ Park in December and knew only
that when he took charge of his first game at Selhurst Park there would be the warm applause he had always received as a visiting manager. Beyond that, he was in the dark. His back-up plan was Ameobi.

“I brought him here because I thought he would be a powerful influence on the players,” Pardew says. “Let’s be honest, he’s been at Newcastle, seen it, done it, saved them, been the slayer of the Mackems. I actually thought he was going to be the one who was going to get the winning goal against Swansea to keep us up.

“As a manager you have to have an imagination. If we were in a dogfight, Shola gets us the goal because he’s got the experience to be calm and to score. He’s got the confidence because he’s been in the Premier League for ten years. These [Palace] players have only been here one or two years. But we’ve not needed Shola. He laughs now and says I should still be playing him.”

Having ensured that Palace will receive their share of the bumper broadcast revenue, Pardew now wants to turn them into a club who can aim for regular top-ten finishes. “I want to break the expectation that Palace will get relegated,” he says.

The 53-year-old likes to defy the odds, to shake perceptions. He has spent a career toughening up and refusing to buckle under pressure or cynicism. It began when he was 16 and failed to make the Surrey county team and it continued when he finally made the move from non-League football to Palace and encountered snootiness about his roots among players who had come through the youth ranks at leading clubs. It found its ultimate expression at St James’ Park and the banners calling for him to be sacked.

“I was always fighting the system,” he says. “If you come out of non-League you have to really show your mettle.”

These days he receives an ovation when he emerges from the home tunnel but he knows that, too, could turn sour one day. “I don’t get too carried away,” he says. “It will be a long walk when we’ve lost seven out of eight or something.”

Pardew spent four years at Palace as a player and was, as he puts it, “installed as bit of an icon” thanks to the winning goal he scored in the thrilling 4-3 victory against Liverpool in 1990 FA Cup semi-final.

“When I think back to the managers we’ve had here, three stick in my mind,” he says. “They are kind of heroes to me in a way: Malcolm Allison in terms of his stature, the way he carried himself, his coaching ability; Terry Venables, who created a really exciting team, and Steve Coppell. I like that legacy. I like that this club is associated with attacking football.”

Coppell, he says, helped him to adapt from being a non-League player who ran about wildly trying to cover every blade of grass to being able to understand tactics. “Steve’s still not in the game which I find bizarre, how can he not have a job in the game?” Pardew says. “I haven’t got a role here that’s big enough for him.”

Pardew does not expect to entice players who have the chance to sign for City or Liverpool “but we are in the same market as Newcastle, Aston Villa, Spurs and Everton. That would never have been the case under Coppell or Venables or Allison so in a way I’m in a fortunate position”.

Improvements to Palace’s training ground will help attract players who want to be in London but who might otherwise be seduced by Tottenham Hotspur’s shimmering new complex. He says he can also offer them the chance to be the big name at a passionate club.

“We have a tremendous feeling from the fans, we are a united club but we need two or three star players,” he says. “The new TV deal gives us a fantastic opportunity and for that to kick in we had to stay in the Premier League. I knew I had to keep them in the division and it would be difficult as it always is the second year after promotion when the adrenalin isn’t flowing as much as it was for Tony [Pulis] last season.”

Pardew sounds settled, content. His efforts to rein in his anger by turning to Jeremy Snape, the former England cricketer and a renowned sports psychologist, do not embarrass him — indeed it is Pardew who brings Snape into the conversation. Ask Pardew to think about his psyche or his motivation and he says, “That’s one for Jeremy.”

And as for that ruthless ambition? “It isn’t in my mind. When you’re a younger manager it is. I’m not looking at any other big club.”

What he learnt along the way

Reading

“I didn’t really have too many failures. I was building an exciting young team and enjoying coaching and naively thinking that’s what’s going to happen for the rest of my career.”

West Ham United

“It was learning about the media, what the media wanted. I was naive with the media: I had no training and I didn’t understand why people were attacking me. I learnt you couldn’t win all the time. I already had a thick skin but it started to thicken up at West Ham. I learnt about the politics of football and they were one of the reasons I left.”

Charlton Athletic

“I learnt the impact of relegation, which I had inherited. I wasn’t told how big an impact that would be. I was slightly deceived by the agenda.”

Southampton

“I like to think I set some good things in motion. Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all went on to have great England success. I learnt that the relationship with the chairman is important.”

Newcastle United

“I was well armed. I am always confident I can make teams better. The club had just been promoted and they wanted a different approach. They didn’t want to sign older players such as Michael Owen. I learnt that you have to show strength and dignity.”

Double over Liverpool

After our glorious win on Saturday, I got to thinking whether that was our first win at Anfield in the league. I couldn't remember any off the the top of my head, but a glance at the H2H revealed that we did win there 25 years ago.

2nd November 1991
Liverpool 1 - 2 Palace

This was the first season I went to a few home matches and started taking an interest in our fortunes, but don't recall anything about this match. I do remember the home match, which we also won, thus completing the double that year too. Seems like such a momentous result should have more of a place in Palace folklore, yet I know nothing about it!

Anyone there who can recount the details for me?

Covers band

Hi,

Has anyone had a good experience when hiring a band to play cover versions? For example at a wedding (although this is for a 40th birthday party). Or maybe someone on the good ship BBS is in a band?

There must be good ones around, but i'd imagine it could be pretty hit and miss.

It's for the Caterham area.
