Compulsory £100 Food and Drink levy on season tickets

dimanche 1 février 2015

I think this deserves a thread of its own.

Like others who have posted here, every one of the season ticket holders who sit around me told me yesterday how cross they are at the £100 levy on food and drink proposed for next season.

I too am pretty upset about this. I probably make it to 14 or 15 games a season, and maybe spend a fiver on a pie and a hot drink at most of them Perhaps if the quality and service were better I might spend a little more. But I object strongly to the club forcing me to spend money on food and drink that I don't want - and it's galling to hear the club say that prices are being held for next season, when actually I have to pay £100 more.

How confident are we that this new contactless system is going to work anyway? The club don't exactly have a great track record in introducing new technologies, right? If I'm buying for two or three people, instead of collecting the money off them will I now have to proffer three cards, and ask the server to put one pie and a bovril on this one, a sausage roll and a water on that one, and a bag of sweets on the other one? I'm sure the staff will figure that one out easily - not! Rather than speeding things up, I would be very surprised if it didn't slow things down considerably. Have we also given thought to the extra volume that will be created by those people who normally don't purchase food and drink now being forced to do so because they have had to pre-pay it?

If we do think this new technology is worth introducing (and I am far from convinced it will have anything other than a negative effect) then introduce cashless payment by offering a card for sale for £100 that gives some extra value - say an extra 5% on top. If by doing this you need to put the price of my ticket up from £620 to £650 then I'm happy to pay that. But this £100 of F&B included is going to annoy loyal customers, and be an operational nightmare. Please rethink this one quickly Steve.
