Winter Olympics 2014 Winner: srs9jps

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.

Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.

Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Passport renewable debacle

It's been a couple of weeks since the gov said they were going to beef up the offices in L'pool to speed up the delays...but mine is now coming up to being 2 weeks late in arriving and news reports say some have been waiting for 2 months.

Just wondering if anyone else has renewed recently and what their turnaround time for getting the new one was.

Tickets for foreigners

I'll be visiting UK from Australia in the autumn and in London for a week in September.

How do I get tickets for the Palace v Burnley game on September 12th (2x adults + 1 child)?

Suggestion: Leonardo Pavoletti

This chap was 3rd top scorer in Serie B last season with 20 goals and appears to be very good in the (6ft 2"). Leeds are showing interest but could be the type of player we need for the last 15-20 minutes to grab a goal?

I reckon a bid of £30 would seal it, paid with 3 tenners.

Eagles in Oz: can you come out to play?

Adjunct to my Big Away Trip thread: calling all Eagles in Oz. I'll be in Sydney 22-27 July roughly, then Adelaide for August with trips to Melbourne at some point. I then fly to Alice Springs, on to Darwin and round to Brisbane from where I fly to Singapore in October.

Will confirm exact dates/locations when bookings done.

Let me know where you are and hopefully we can use this thread to meet up for beers & Palace matches, once season kicks off (subject obviously to TV & timings).

Cardiiff fans attitude towards Palace

Hi Eagles first congratulations on an excellent first season back in the premiership. I am very happy for your club. Good luck with your new season and summer signings. Lets hope both Swansea and Palace keep who they need to keep and clean out who they need to clean out ready for new signings.

Secondly I would like to point you in the direction of a forum thread on cardiff city forum so you can see some of the stinky attitude the scum have towards your club.

I have been banned from their forum many times under the name "THE CRIM"

I can't stand Cardiff city. They are one big joke. Lets hope they are the club that keep giving in the championship.

The Future

I'm 47 years old in a couple of weeks.

CPFC is very central to my life second only to my family.

This could be a very important season for a lot of us after being through endless false dawns, shit and disasters.

I have a lot of confidence in CPFC2010, Tony Pulis, the team, and all the people associated with the club that have started to make things really work.

I don't know what the future brings but I hope beyond hope that we can just do ourselves proud.

Very special club.

Love to everything Palace.

Two yanks are dropped in a remote part of the world with no clothes and one object of their choice (always a knife and fire starter thing). They have to last 21 days with no food, water, shelter other than what they find.

Twiglet disaster / Broken Britain

Picture the scene.

I'm in Sainsbury's doing the little top up shop .....you know couple of beers, newspaper etc. I stroll confidently over to the crisps aisle looking for Twiglets. (Trying to be good and going for a baked rather than deep fried snack). Can't seem to see any......."Excuse me mate, where are the Twiglets?" I ask the shop assistant. "Sorry mate, we don't sell Twiglets."

WTF!

There are 32 different types of artisan goats cheese......but no Twiglets. In Sainsbury's!

Has anybody else had a similar shocking shopping disaster?

For either side to qualify, they have to win, AND hope for a positive result between USA and Germany. If USA and Germany draw, they can't be caught. They might also need a big swing in goal difference. Ghana have the best chance - if they win and Germany beat USA, they have a good chance of finishing above USA.

Wonga and pay day loans

For those that haven't seen, Wonga is in a bit of bother for sending out threatening letters form fake legal companies chasing people who were late with repayments.

There will be compensation paid to people but why are they still trading? Surely a case for fraud...

There was a big fuss last year and the Government announced an investigation

into the pay day loan industry but nothing has happened.

Can only assume that the investigation discovered Wonga was a big Tory donor and everything got dropped quietly...

Rumour: Tommy Oar

Just been told he is signing next week. Bloke who told me is a coach for the local State league side.

Hello

Hello everyone, just want to introduce myself in a few sentences.

I'm chris, 23 years old, from Duisburg, Germany.

I'm a palace fan since my first visit at SE15 two years ago. It was my first game in the motherland of football. It was the 2-2 draw against Leeds and at this moment I was totally fascinated.

I've seen a lot of football games in am life before (I'm a MSV Duisburg Supporter, maybe some of u know?!) but these experience was really incredible for me. The atmosphere at selhurst park was so awesome, I became a member of cpfc last year and visited cpfc end of last year with my dad and some friends. Another trip this season is planned!!!

I'm looking forward to get informations about the best club out of Germany and have contact with all of you.

That's it!

Ps: sorry for my bad English, hope you understand me...

Greets from Germany,

Chris

Air strike - June 2014

Hello all

Are the current air strikes in France and or Belgium likely to affect flights in and out of England on the weekend?

I have had a look on line and there are different reports from everywhere, including some that say things will be bad until 30 June and another report which says it's been cancelled.

Does anyone with any knowledge care to share their wisdom?

Thanks in advance

Honduras qualify if they win AND France beat Ecuador AND there is a big swing in goal difference

Fujitsu Laptop repair needed

My laptop has gone a bit wrong. It does not even get to the bios page on start up, just goes straight to flashing cursor top left.

HD seems OK so data should be OK. Have bought a caddy which arrives tomorrow to connect to the HD to backup.

Need somewhere local to have a look at the laptop and quote repair. Have a feeling it might have been knocked or similar and something has become disconnected inside. Just a hunch though.

Anyone recommend a decent laptop repair company local? I'm based in Keston and work in Vauxhall.

Thanks

Dan

Home Babies

This was one of those stories that I stumbled across a couple of weeks ago, and because it wasn't really followed up or splashed across front pages, I rather forgot about it. I think I saw it first in the Spanish press.

Spain has its own baby scandal from the same period, of the babies stolen from poor or irreligious mothers by the Church and sold to pious, Catholic mothers. It seems they kept infant corpses pickled in some cases to show to the birth mothers as proof that the baby had died.

These cases both seem to be consequences of observance of, or belief in, the morality handed down by religions.

Any thoughts on this stuff, I wonder?

Historians reveal secrets of UK gun-running which lengthened the American civil war

To view the link you have to Register or Login

New historical and archaeological research is shining an embarrassing light on one of the darkest periods of British foreign policy.

Other research, carried out over the past decade, has revealed the extraordinary extent to which substantial sections of Britain’s business elite were working with impunity to help the slave-owning southern states win the Civil War – despite the fact that Britain was officially neutral and had outlawed slavery almost 30 years earlier.

In total some 200 vessels were purpose-built or upgraded on Clydeside, in Liverpool or in London for the Confederate states – and hundreds of thousands of guns (including heavy artillery) were manufactured in Birmingham, Newcastle and near London for the Confederate Army.

The entirely illegal, but tacitly British-Government-approved pro-Confederate gun-running operation is thought to have lengthened the American Civil War by up to two years – and to have therefore cost as many as 400,000 American lives.

Britain was split down the middle in its attitude to the American Civil War. The left, many liberals and much of the working class was pro-US and anti-Confederate – mainly because of the South’s pro-slavery stance. But many Tories and much of the business sector were actively pro-Confederate, as there were considerable fortunes to be made from supplying guns, uniforms, medicines, textiles and even food to the south.

Health group calls for 'sugar tax' to cut child obesity

A "sugar tax" should be introduced by the UK government to help curb obesity in childhood, a campaign group says.

Action on Sugar has produced a seven-point plan to discourage children from consuming foods and soft drinks with high levels of added sugar.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

There shouldn't be a tax on sugar - if your child is morbidly obese you are guilty of child abuse.

Sat down with Palace's U21 goalkeeper (who is a MASSIVE Palace fan) to talk about his career so far, and his hopes for the future.

He spoke very highly of Julian Speroni, but also of Ben Garner, Gary Issott and Ken Gillard.

19-year-old goalkeeper who has seen countless goalkeepers come and go, is in the process of negotiating a new two year contract with the club and spent some time out on loan at Sutton last season. Might as well use this thread to give updates on his progress.

Did he do the right thing?

A boring 'Classics' question.

Need some help.

I need the name of a historical battle or a conflict which epitomizes a struggle between two individuals that has a longevity to it. Not a feud but more a battle for supremacy over the course of a period of time.

My initial thought was 'Waterloo' but that conveys more a straight forward win or loss, all or nothing scenario. I want something that conveys an on-going struggle between two individuals.

Hereford United

Grim goings on at Hereford. Expelled from the Conference and potentially facing expulsion from the Southern League due to the actions or the previous (incompetent) chairman and now being followed up by the actions of an ex-con Essex wide boy spiv, Thomas Agombar. If you have a moment, read their forum on the link below for some background to a farcical situation.

This chancer is suspected to only be interested in aquiring the leases to Edgar Street from the Council so he can flog these off for development and pocket the cash.

The club is on it's knees and it seems that the only way forward for them now is to start again from scratch as a Phoenix club. This is a 'there but for the grace of God' situation and it's not right to see this happen to a very proud club.

This petition will hopefully gather enough signatures to convince Herefordshire Council to do the right thing and tell Agombar to **** off.

If footballers did a normal job

Suarez in an advert

English footballers and lack of intelligence

I've wanted to start a thread like this up for a while, but I guess I've felt a bit embarrassed and disrespectful bringing it up. I know 'thick footballers' are classed in similar stereotypical brackets as 'female blondes', but it is something that people have generally joked about, and can't say I've seen much serious thought written on the subject.

'civil eagle' on the World Cup Uruguay thread brought it up, and prompted me to start a thread on the subject that I've wanted to for a while now.

It has always been a stark contrast for me, the difference in success between English football managers and Scottish ones. I think it's safe to say one of the attributes of a top manager is intelligence. Look at English managers; is there any top flight league in the world, where a home grown manager has not won their domestic league for over 20 years? Wilkinson in 1992, was the last Englishmen to win our top flight league.

You can reel off the top English players in the last 30 years that have been average at best in management: Robson, Barnes, Butcher, Shilton, Mills, Pearce, Hoddle, Wilkins, Adams, Shearer, Southgate, Ince, Neal......nearly all them rode on the back of their successful playing career and were given decent club jobs too, yet still were failures predominantly.

We were lucky; in Coppell we have had one of the only bright English managers in the last 30 years. Is it a coincidence that he finished a degree in economics before taking up the game professionally?

At a guess I would point the finger at our education system in this country. Nearly all our professionals hail from working class backgrounds and so attended comprehensive schools. The gulf in eloquence between our English rugby counterparts compared to the footballers is pretty overwhelming. And guess what? The majority of professional players in the English Rugby Union Premiership went to private schools.

BBS Crimes Against Grammar

samedi 21 juin 2014

I can't take it anymore. I can understand abbreviations and leaving out punctuation on tweets and I even can understand the occasional grammar slip up on the BBS. Hell, I've done it before and will do it again. But there has been a problem that has infected the BBS and doesn't look like it could end any time soon.

I don't know how many times in the last few months, but I've seen a proliferation of phrases like "He should of", "We could of", "I would of". :veryangry I know you are trying to type "should have", "could have", "would have"; but if you are desperately into brevity, use the contraction. "Should've", "could've", "would've". I know I can't be the only person that gets his balls in a twist about stuff like this.

And I wish people would quit saying "bald faced lie". What the hell is a bald face? It's a bold faced lie. For more reasoned grammar questioning, I'll hand it over to the current Mr Phil Brooks.

Broken Custard Creams

Whenever I open a pack of custard creams, the end biscuit (sometimes two) is always broken. :grrr:

Personally I would be happy if they removed the end biscuit and replaced it with a sort of foam shock absorbing replacement, perhaps embossed with the traditional custard cream motif for aesthetic resons.

Is it better to have one biscuit fewer in the pack but then have the reassurance that all will be perfect? Or make do with the one broken one and perhaps palm it on to a colleague?

How "Seven Nation Army" became a Sports Anthem

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

The march toward musical empire began on Oct. 22, 2003, in a bar in Milan, Italy, 4,300 miles away from Detroit. Fans of Club Brugge K.V., in town for their team's group-stage UEFA Champions League clash against European giant A.C. Milan, gathered to knock back some pre-match beers. Over a stereo blared seven notes: Da...da-DA-da da DAAH DAAH, the signature riff of a minor American hit song.

By normal pop-music expectations, the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" had already passed its peak. Released in March of that year, the single reached No. 1 on Billboard's alternative rock chart in early July, stayed there for three weeks, then had begun to fade out. But the members of the Blue Army, a Brugge supporters group, liked what they were hearing and began to sing along. "It's a very catchy tune," Blue Army spokesman Geert De Cang wrote in an email.

But in Milan, at the beginning, it was purely spontaneous and local. Kickoff was coming. The visiting Belgians moved out into the city center, still singing. They kept chanting it in the stands of the San Siro—Oh...oh-OH-oh oh OHH OHH—as Peruvian striker Andres Mendoza stunned Milan with a goal in the 33rd minute and Brugge made it hold up for a shocking 1-0 upset. Filing out of the stadium, they continued to belt it out.

The song traveled back to Belgium with them, and the Brugge crowd began singing it at home games. The club itself eventually started blasting "Seven Nation Army" through the stadium speakers after goals.

England's Managers

I'm not sure if this poll has been done on here in the past, sorry if it has.

If you could have the pick from one manager/coach (past and present) to manage today's England team, who would you choose?

Britain First.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

The new kiddies on the British far-right block and have been behind a rather sophisticated social media campaign for some time now but it is interesting timing from channel 4 in terms of this rather in-depth news report although, as per usual, they cannot resist indulging in the sort of soc.lib sneering that has worked so well with the likes of UKIP and so on.

Which makes me wonder as to why now ? The BNP are dead and buried and the EDL the same (both, in my opinion, deliberately done so by HMG in a variety of ways. Always suspected that Griffin will be one day exposed as a long term MI5 plant to act as sort of lightning rod for a section of the disgruntled population) so why now give this Britain First organisation the sort of publicity it craves ?

The people behind it are obviously wealthy and social media savvy but why feel the need to go to these lengths to make a lot more people aware of them ?

Also feel free to bandy the term 'fascist' around when it comes to this lot. This IS what a fascist movement looks and acts like so it might prove educational for some of you.

But it does make me scratch my head and wonder which particular brains thought of offering them the sort of PR that this slice of supposedly serious news coverage offers them.

Fixture Information 2014/15 Crystal Palace TV Coverage Thread

So, with the fixtures announced yesterday, the big question is: does anyone know when the first round of TV Fixtures will be announced?

Suggestion: Ivan Perišić

I'm sure these type threads will pop up all over now we're exposed to the worlds best, but seeing the highlights of the Cameroon v Croatia game last night, this lad looks useful - very pacy, can play across the line, 6'2 (Pulis type player!), looks left/both footed, and only 25. Wolfsburg paid 8mill Euros, so potentially we could offer £5-8mill if they are willing to sell? Would be great competition for Yanni or play in the no.10 position behind Chamakh/new signing.

Rumour: Chris Kettings

Sky Sports understands Crystal Palace are closing in on former Blackpool goalkeeper Chris Kettings.

Kettings is a free agent after seeing out his contract at Bloomfield Road earlier this summer.

The 21-year-old started his career at Manchester City before joining Blackpool in 2007.

Kettings had loan spells at Birmingham, Morecambe and York City, but it was at Hyde last season where he caught the eye.

Palace have now lined up a move for Kettings as they look to bolster their goalkeeping options and they see the 21-year-old as a player for the future.

The Scotland Under 21 international will provide cover and competition for Julian Speroni and Wayne Hennessey following Neil Alexander's departure from Selhurst Park.

Spain's rebuilding job

With the end of one Spanish golden generation, is it fair to say that the Spanish rebuilding job is a hell of a lot easier and quicker than the one that Germany went through 4-6 years ago.

How easy would it be to create something like this? I have access to weld shops and crafts men. I imagine the curve is the challenge.

Also would it be possible to break it down into sections for transport - I believe it is "snap apart" so I could do something like this?

Finally, and most importantly, I would need to skin it - would 1/4 inch ply be a good option or is there something that would be better. Lightweight would be good, and preferably I wouldnt want to see the frame...

American women love Palace players

If you want to impress young American women just tell them that you play for Crystal Palace. That is the findings of a survey I recently conducted during a month-long road trip in the States.

Let me explain.... There we were having a steak and beer in a bar in Roanoke, a small town in upstate Virginia, nestling in the foothills of the Blue Mountains. Over comes the owner, having heard that there were some strange sounding foreign people in his bar. Having found out where we came from, his first question to me was which football team I supported. He broke out laughing when I told him.

This is his story... Ten years ago he played goalie in his local 'soccer' team. He needed to buy some new goalie gloves. The young female shop assistant asked him if he had ever played professionally. Wanting to impress her he said (falsely) that he had played for Crystal Palace in the Premiership and a few Cup games. I'm afraid that your correspondent's memory starts to get a bit hazy from then on, because he insisted on buying us some more beers and the conversation moved onto our recent season and the World Cup.

The wife was also less than impressed by the subject of discussion. This could be because a) she grew up in Charlton b) she recalled the day before I had pointed out that the local Richmond paper was announcing to a great fanfare that tickets for the game against top Premiership club Crystal Palace were going on sale the following Tuesday or, and most likely c) she recalled that about the same time our new American friend was buying his goalie gloves we had stumbled into a breakfast bar in Budapest where the waiter , having found out I supported Palace, spent the whole time discussing the Palace and the two Hungarian players then in our squad. (Needless to say after that we went there every day for breakfast).

So that is the result of my extensive survey, conducted I might say at some cost to my liver. Now I recognise that the statistical pedants in YouGov and MORI may question the number of people questioned in this survey and there might be some flies to the theory of all American women loving Crystal Palace. Notably 1 The guy did say that he chose Crystal Palace, because they were not well known and no-one would check his story 2 He did not say if he succeeded in impressing the young woman and 3 It might only apply to goalies.

So, in purely in the interests of scientific inquiry, I think the players, owners, staff and fans should put this theory to the test in Palace 's forthcoming visit to the States.

Over to you guys and 'have a nice day' ( and night).

Empty seats

Why are there so many empty seats at every game? Looks awful.

BBC v ITV

What are our early thoughts?

I find ITV's decision to have Fabio Cannavaro astonishing. Admittedly he's getting better, but I just think his English is poor and laborious - listening to him a few beers down the road is choresome. He also has no link to the game in this country (does that matter ). They seem to have upped their game with the commentary however. The presentation and graphics are fussy as always.

The BBC panel seems to be a constant rota of faces. None of them really appeal. I'm going to say it - the best BBC pundit is Steve Claridge - he should be there, but isn't famous enough. And Lawrenson's puerile brand of sarcasm/ cyancism is realy starting to grate. Actually, it started to grate 5 years ago. But they do have JP, their saving grace, and the interface is clear and concise.

On balance I'd go with the Beeb, but it's closer than previous tournaments where ITV has been eons behind. I think this is because BBC has gone backwards however, rather than ITV improving. :(

Match Updates: Germany v Portugal (5pm)

:p

Joe Hart loses his cool

Keeps a clear head myth busted by Mr. Head and Shoulders himself :moo:

Match Updates: Iran vs. Nigeria - 8pm

Victor Moses should become the second ever Palace Academy graduate to play at a World Cup this evening. Clinton was in the Ireland squad in 2002 but never got on the pitch. Kenny Sansom obviously played for England back in the 80's.

He'll be expecting to start today's game :)

Match Updates: Ghana v USA

This game is going to be happening tonight, not.that most Americans would know it. When a student asked an American collegue of mine if he had watched the game this morning (England v Italy) he reacted with horror. "why would I watch soccer?!", his friend quickly joined in. The student then asked me and and I said I was very dissapointed, to which the American said "does the UK have a team this year?".

I'm hoping against hope Ghana win 5-0

Palace in Lagos

Bit of a long shot i know but I'm here for a week and wondered if there were any Palace around to suggest pubs for the football or see it with.

I'm staying on Victoria Island.

Cheers

Unofficial or ignored rules

Having seen the host nation get the benefit of several generous decisions in the opening game it got me thinking about some of the unwritten rules in football or the rules that are rarely applied. For instance:

  • Keepers are rarely called for being a couple of yards off their line when a penalty is struck.

  • Referees seem obliged to 'not ruin the game as a spectacle' when there's a large tv audience. ie De Jong getting away with a yellow for a vicious kung fu kick.

  • A yellow card offence doesn't result in a yellow card if it happens in the first few minutes of a game.

What else is there?

Happy birthday Jone-Zee

The Best Burrito in the USA

dimanche 15 juin 2014

This will obviously only appeal to a small percentage of BBSers, those living in America and those loving burritos, but Nate Silver's (the statistical guru that gained fame predicting various American political races) website is having a tournament to decide the best burrito in the US. They used a combination of online reviews and expert suggestions. There are four regions; Northeast, South, West and California. I'd love to get some Cali BBSers to offer opinions on the California entrants. I have eaten at one of the two Georgia entrants and I don't know if Raging Burrito is one of the 64 best burritos in the US, but it is damn good.

Wrorld cup so far

I think this has been so good compared to south africa. All the teams apart from honduras have looked to attack.Loads of goals and chances and the good players playing well.Even england look positive.

Why do people think this is? I think one of the reasons is in south africa alot of teams were full of oldies reaching the end of their careers, whereas most of the teams seem to be blooding plenty of youngsters playing without fear.

Plus i suppose nobody wants to go to brazil and stick 10 men behind the ball.
