Was Hodgson the wrong appointment in Summer 2023?

samedi 2 septembre 2023

Roy Hodgson is a Palace legend. Let’s say that from the outset. I always thought he was brought in because we didn’t have the money to match the ambition of a more attacking manager. But the ease with which money was found for a relatively expensive 5th choice centre back (wages) and a new No1 goalkeeper proves the backers of the owners right: there was cash for new signings.

So, was it wrong for Parish and the Americans to appoint Hodgson? Did we have to fall back on defensive acquisitions because that’s what the manager wanted? Or because Roy Hodgson couldn’t attract attackers of quality to the club? (Let’s not forget it was rumoured that Olise only wanted to sign for us because of Vieira, as an example.)

I’m sure that we will stay up. Luton, Sheffield United and even Burnley will probably all disappear. Roy has shown a fantastic ability to pick up points against Championship quality sides. Remember when we beat Leeds 5-1? Think we can have another result like that later on in the season when playing Luton or Burnley. But if Parish wants a manager who can attract even talent like CHO, like Cooper could, perhaps it was a mistake appointing Roy, and this should be Hodgson’s last season here. We’ve said that before though! Would be interested to hear people’s thoughts.
