They’ve got time to work on it:
——————————Guaita——————————————-
Ward———Andersen———Guehi————Mitchell
—————-Doucoure———Schlupp———————
——————————Ayew———————————-
——Olise—————-Zaha—————-Eze————
1) Think we can switch between 4-2-1-3 and 4-1-2-3 depending on the opposition. But for Chelsea it’ll be the former for more defensive solidity.
2) Schlupp is not ideal, but he can move, and seems to play better against the top six teams because there’s more covering to do and therefore less to think about. McArthur to come in for him when fit, and Hughes to be given a chance there if JS is having a stinker.
3) Don’t think it’s worked to be honest having Eze in centre mid. It’s left us exposed defensively. He works hard and covers the ground but without the tenacity or aggression of even a player like Olise imho. He simply doesn’t win the ball as much unless it’s a simple block tackle. Also, I maintain that he is better from deep. He lacks the explosive ability of a No 10 imho, and his skill is in running with the ball from further back. If Eze plays wider he will naturally be deeper as he has to cover further back. But he also has more cover when he goes forward from deep so it is win win. I think in time he could play in a midfield with Doucoure and Ayew or Olise, but not Schlupp as we’d need to hold and control the game better. we’d also have to have better attacking players, which we don’t currently have, but maybe it can be tried from time to time when we are chasing and on top in a game.
4) which brings me to my final point. Edouard and Mateta are simply not good enough to start games imho. They are squad players. So, Zaha has to play up front - he is a better striker as his goalscoring figures prove.. The question is then who plays wide left and I think Eze is the best option - he did well there under Hodgson, and has done ok in games there under Vieira, for example the goal at Southampton at the end of last season. It’s not ideal but will be ok for now. Would be interested to hear people’s thoughts on this.
