Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

Dying Matters.

I thought I'd post this following the Deborah James post.

Death comes to us all!!
The old sayings of "as soon as you're born you're dying, it's just a question of when" or "the only certainty of life is death" are sad but true.

I've faced the death of both parents and a wife and it's tough. I also work in a hospice and I see it on a weekly, sometimes daily basis.

It's also a taboo subject for society, whilst we can talk about loads of subjects, the subject of our own and others deaths '(even those knowingly dying) makes us uncomfortable and we shy from it, and leave it too late.

The net result is when someone does pass, surviving relatives agonise about whether they are doing the right thing for that person. I'm sure that we have all had those throw away comments about what songs you'd like at your funeral, but would you know your partner or parents??

Do you know if they'd like songs or hymms, cremation or burial, the curtains open or closed at the end, a cross present, poems to be read, who goes in the cars (extended families please note), to be scattered ( and where!) or a headstone, flowers or donations, who they don't want at the funeral! The list is endless!!

Dying matters!! It's time to have those conversations while you can.

Robots and what's around the corner

I, like many have always had one eye on the future and having grown up in the 60's sci-fi era, I have always enjoyed seeing the visions unfold into reality. With authors such as Arthur C Clarke (Amongst others) remarkably accurate with predictions and implications. I won't list them off but so much we now take for granted. Alexa alone is something taken casually for granted that was a crazy dream (echoes/hints of Hal etc).

Anyway, one area that has been around for ages but really struggled to make real progress has been robots. There have been various things around, with most of them being body parts rather than the whole 9 yards but most have been a joke until Atlas, Spot and the Honda robot arrived on the scene. Since then the progress has accelerated exponentially and now there are ridiculously impressive facial expressions, communication and interactions. The movements have really come on and balance has for themost part been cracked (Amazing how hard it has been to crack what every (most) human accomplishes without thinking.

The point was to perhaps see if anyone else has been following this stuff.

The implications are potentially huge and it does feel to me that the time left is dangerously short between now and when these things are seriously impacting our lives and society.

Just take work. Jump forward to day 2 and these things will work all day for maintenance costs only. Perfectly accurate and consistent. If you have ever seen the amazon warehouses you will know that robots already manage these on their own and there is now reason why the robot maintenace won't be done by robots soon. Deliveries already are already automated in some US zip codes (mainly the valley).

It's easy to shrug and say, great these things will do all of the boring jobs for us and costs will go down. I would agree. But in the same way that many misjudged shipping work offshore, think again. People thought the boring cheap jobs would be shipped offshore but it's ended up with the higher skilled expensive jobs going (IT developement, finance/tax modelling). It's those that are staying over there now because that's where the skillbase is now. With robots, they won't just do the simple jobs. They will potentially perform medical operations more accurately and increasingly make better and more informed decisions than the instincts of tired, ageing medical professional. There is a stat that the success rate for operations can be directly mapped to the number of that operation that doctor has performed in the previous month. Robots don't ever forget the procedure, could learn from every instance of that op in the world potentially and evolve the process.

I'll stop because maybe this isn't of interest but there is a huge amount of things that need to be thought through by society before fully unleashing this stuff. I am not suggesting slowing anything down, rather speeding up the awareness and Government assessment of this stuff's impact on economy and so on. It needs thinking about. I think it's probably already too late and in the same way that the internet has evolved without constraints (good and bad) I do think robots will do the same now. Lot of topics

Workplace
Skill base
Military
Law enforcement and control of society
Medical
Sex industry
AI
Terminator wars
Privacy is dead....

Just a note on the sex industry that might make many laugh but it has driven large swathes of the development of image, video and communications, online transactions infrastructure that we now rely upon and it's been driving a section focused on interaction and facial expressions and so on. Throw away you blow up dolls guys and gals, it's party time with Loretta or Laura XGS1 or whatever.

Before anyone thinks I am completely mad, I don't believe robots take over our jobs next year or that robot war breaks out in 5 yrs time but I do think it's impacts are already too close to realisation to be fully controlled.

Tour De France 2022

Walking around in town yesterday quite allot of anticipation building here in Copenhagen for "Le Grand Départ" this Friday.

Finish work at 15:00 so plenty of time to find a spot to see it.

Seems like Pogacar still the favourite for most to cement a hatrick of wins, while allot of home hype here for Jonas Vingegaard (being described as a dark horse/although probably too soon I reckon)

Discussion: Play or Loan?

This is brought up in a lot of threads but we have reached a point where some of our young players are on the edge of the squad, and the question comes up on what is best for their development. As far as senior squad players we have..

Guaita, Matthews, Butland/Johnstone
Mitchell, Ward, Clyne, Ferguson
Andersen, Guehi, Tomkins
Luka, Jairo, (Kouyate, maybe Doucoure)
McArthur, Hughes
Schlupp, Eze, Olise, Zaha, Ayew
JPM, Edouard, Benteke

So 22 +/- senior over age players, with maybe some possibly leaving (Luka, Kouyate, Benteke) and maybe one or two more added.

That begs the question, with the added change of 5 subs, as to what is best for the young players - being with the squad, getting some minutes in the Cups and PL, maybe playing U21 as well, or do we loan them out? In that group, I’d start with the ones who have been in the squad, or in one case had a successful loan:

Rak-Sakyi
Adaramola
O’Brien
Wells-Morrison
Plange
Ewiobei
Ferguson (from a fitness recovery perspective)

Personally, if we could get Ben Garner to take Wells-Morrison & maybe O’Brien again that would be good. For the others, I would have them in the wider squad, with Plange loaned or kept dependent on what the final senior striker roster ends up as.

Thoughts?

Surprised that there wasn't already a thread on this - we were loosely linked with him a few years back, probably a good thing that came to nothing.

Exit stage far right, hey?

Match Ticket Information: General question re away tickets

You can tell by my name that I've been away a while, and relying on friends etc to get me a ticket for the occasional game when I can get back. However, I'm moving back to the UK permanently soon and looking forward to getting to more games, particularly away games :D

So, how do I reliably go about getting two or three tickets (together) for away games? I won't be a season ticket holder, but my brother is. Would I need to be a member? Could my brother buy away tickets on my behalf?

iphone WIFI calling problem

Can anyone explain this.

Got two identical iphones on my BT contract eighteen months ago, one for me and my wife. They have been working fine with no issues. We have a poor indoors signal from BT data service and so we rely on WiFi calling via our BT router in the house. This has been working fine too over the period. Yesterday, something went wrong and we could not make any outgoing calls inside the house using both iphones. The "WiFI Calling" text in the top left hand corner of the screen disappeared. Mine first, then my wife's a couple of minutes later.

I tried all the usual methods to get it back, like re-booting the phone and router, checking the settings, a complete reset, but to no avail, and I still couldn't get that service. I thought I would try ejecting the SIM card this morning and replace to see if that made a difference. Anyway, I didn't have to, as wifi calling had mysteriously returned on both phones spontaneously. How could this have happened, and does anyone have any clues?

Gold Membership 22/23

Giving up my season ticket this season. Age, living in West Wiltshire, additional mid week games all a contribution to a difficult decision. Not price, they are still very good value imo. Looking at buying a Gold Membership for £60. You seem to get a whole load of guff that I don’t want and aside from the exclusive 72 hour window you get to buy tickets there seems to be no benefit (to me) over the ordinary membership which costs £25.
Does anyone know how often ordinary members (as opposed to Gold members) got the chance to buy a ticket for home games last season (and if so were they all in the Arfur?)
Thanks.

parking near the O2 or Lewisham on rail strike Thurs

I need to be at the O2 coach park for around 745AM. My taxi cancelled (bastards). Need somewhere I can leave the car for a few days. Is there anywhere within walking distance of Lewisham station so we can get the tube? I was planning to park 30 mins walk away from the O2 but I'm told the traffic gets so snarled up around there on strike days even early in the morning we could just get stuck. Any ideas pls?

Who won’t be on the pre-season tour?

Given that you have to be fully vaccinated to enter Australia, do we know who out of our first-team squad isn’t vaccinated, and thus won’t be on the tour?

10 year old passport travelling to EU

So post Brexit you can't use a passport that is 10 years old even if it's still several months before its expiry date. Does anyone have any experience of whether you actually get stopped or not? This would be flying to Malaga in a couple of weeks.

One year on - should we be optimistic for the coming season?

Seems a lifetime ago when we were all looking at the various press stories about our possible managers, the bearded one, fat Frank etc, then PV comes out of the blue as manager but not first choice. Plenty of us were not convinced because there are so many examples of great players not being great managers. Steve finally puts his hands into the palace pockets and we get two class CHs rather than six decent crocks. We get michael O, Conor on loan, and rely on home grown LB. PV changes our style of play and makes it exciting to watch the team. Position wise, not hugely different from Roy but style of play transformed. We get to the FA cup semi and have a ‘grand day out’. Wilf looking like he could get 20 goals in the future. Gangling JP maturing, Eze coming back and looking like the player he was.

This season coming? AWB could be the guy to cut out some of the attacks that were getting through on a try before you buy. New keeper to command the box better. New DM upgrade? New third CB to give choice of formation. Plus hopefully someone we don’t yet know about yet. Conor would be the cherry on the cake. As long as most of this happens we will be a better team. Feeling hugely optimistic on what we will do, at least one cup semi and around the top six. If West Ham can do it so can we? How optimistic are you feeling about the season ahead?

Maybe old at 29, but what a good finisher, maybe we could offload Benteke who’s had more than his fair share of time to prove himself as a goal scorer.

Building surveyor or Structural Engineer

We're in the process of selling my late mother-in-law's house. We had a buyer lined up, but when his mortgage company got a survey done they said there was possible structural movement and refused the mortgage so the sale was lost. Unfortunately we've had no more information than that, so we're looking for some guidance for what route to go down now.

I initially contacted a building surveyor who suggested we should get a Specific Defect Analysis report @ £400, though they did warn that this might identify something that then needed further investigation and more cost.

The estate agent has recommended a structural engineer (@ £1,080), on the basis that a mortgage company will do the same so at least we'll know we've got the same level of report. I've since got a quote from the surveyor for a full Building Survey (RICS Home Survey Level 3) @ £600, and I'm really struggling to see what the difference is between them (apart from ~£500). I'm also slightly sceptical because the estate agent says she's known the structural engineer personally for 10 years, hence her recommendation

Can someone who knows about these things please give me some guidance? We're somewhat hampered by the fact that the house is in Cambridgeshire, while we're in Sussex, so it's not easy to get up there at short notice - personally I'd rather be there when they're doing the investigation so I can ask questions at the time

Discussion: Brereton Diaz

Not allowed to bump old threads so starting a new one for this transfer window.

Obviously had a great scoring season in the championship, joint 3rd with 22, but in terms of goals per minutes played he jumps to second.

Was out of contract but Blackburn activated a 1 year extension, surely only with the hope of getting decent money for him this summer rather than seeing him go for free next year.

Adam Armstrong made the move last year for a reported £15m in very similar circumstances i think and Brereton has the build all round game to have a better chance of making it in the PL than Armstrong did.

Not seen too much about clubs in for him this summer but surely he is going to move and at 23 matches the sort of profile we have for purchases. If/When Benteke moves on surely we need a 3rd option centrally and he really fits the mould IMO.

Rise of the Machines?

A Google engineer has been put on leave for publishing a conversation with a chatbot that claims it has achieved sentience.

This is the transcript of the conversation. It's both fascinating and a little chilling at the same time:

There is a distinction, I believe, between faking sentience and being sentient. On the face of it, this seems to pass the Turing test, although the chatbot is not trying to hide what (or who?) it is, but is that enough?

My brother had a stroke last week

My 87 year old brother, who lives in Brisbane had a stroke last week. I feared the worst when I got that call and news from my sister-in-law.

Amazingly, he survived but in what sort of mental state? That was on my mind of course. He was an avid Palace fan until he left for Australia around fifty years ago with his Australian wife, and ever since then we have had our regular chats on the phone in between a few face to face visits we have managed to afford over the years. The subject of Palace's performance, or lack of it, always cropped up, and so I am wondering now, whether or not, we shall ever do that again.

I had a message from my nephew in OZ (a football manager of a local team) who visited his dad, my brother on his 87th birthday a couple of days ago in the rehab ward. He told me that he didn't speak much to him, in fact he has not said much at all since his stroke, and has forgotten most of his recent life experience. It was a cool day in Brisbane (15 degrees) and my nephew was wearing his Palace scarf during the visit. Just before he left, he asked my brother if he knew what he had around his neck. He lifted and craned his head, and out came the word......"Ea....gles!"

Suggestion: Matt O'Riley

dimanche 12 juin 2022

21-year-old central midfielder for Celtic, having joined from MK Dons in January. Born in London but plays for Danish under-21s.

I watched a lot of Celtic after Ange Postecoglou was appointed last season, and when I say a lot, I mean practically every match lol. So I have a pretty good read on their squad and also the level of competition, which of course has to be taken into account when considering a player.

They have a few good players: Callum McGregor of course, the Japanese striker Kyogo, Jota, CCV, Croatian International Josip Juranovic and Liel Abada, the young Israeli winger we were reportedly looking at. But I think O'Riley could actually be the best prospect, and although not at Aribo's level right now (who we've been strongly linked with) very possibly a better player moving forward. He's already the more creative of the two and in that respect, it's not even close. Celtic supporters are big on him, thinking he's destined for the Premier League or similar.

A bit of background. Played his youth football for Fulham but opportunities in the first team were limited, so despite being offered a new deal, left to find another club where he would play regularly. That wasn't easy because this was right at the beginning of the pandemic with all the uncertainty that went with that for clubs, so unable to find a new team immediately, trained on his own until an opportunity came up with MK Dons. I think this says something about him: turned down guaranteed money from Fulham to play in a lower league, because he backed his own ability. He quickly then became a key player and one of the best players in League One. Had a £1.5 million release clause in his contract, so was destined to leave when he did. He was wanted by Swansea and a couple other Championship clubs, and reportedly had several offers on the table before signing for Celtic.

When O'Riley signed for Celtic, I remember reading that a Premier League analyst (I think it was for Liverpool) who was looking at all the leagues in England, found that O'Riley kept popping up in like the 97th, 98th percentile for loads of different attacking metrics, like key passes, assists per 90 minutes and that kind of stuff. Most of this translated to Scotland, as can be seen here:

Indeed, O'Riley really hit the ground running, and had to, joining around the time of a bit of an injury/players away on International duty crisis. That may not be so surprising, because outside of Celtic and Rangers, the rest of the SPL is probably around League One standard, but the obvious difference between playing for Mk Dons and Celtic is the pressure and expectation to win every match. His second game was a starting 11 place in the Old Firm for example, where he was excellent.

The knock against him is that he's not quick and looks a bit, let's say... stiff. He's tall at 187cm though, and has a great feel for the game. He's also kind of savvy defensively (as highlighted in the second part of the below video) often nicking the ball away from opponents from behind/the side.

What really stands out though is his vision and ability to pick a pass - something we've long lacked and IMO need, if we hope to see the best out of a player like Edouard. He's fairly versatile too - his best position being an attacking midfielder, but also comfortable as an 8 and having played in the past as a deep-lying playmaker type.

Bound to attract more attention if he breaks into the Danish senior International side, which appears to be his trajectory, so let's get on this quickly, Dougie.

*edit* I can't seem to embed the video, so link to Youtube highlights here:

Travel router to share hotel WiFi

Has anyone used a travel router to create your own network off of say a hotels WiFi ? We are going in a cruise and they want £90 per device I only need my phone except for one day where I need to do payroll and don’t want to pay do two devices.

Ta

Increasing cost of fuel and travelling to games. Will you adjust your plans?

I don't have a season ticket and I'm pretty selective over which games I go to, often dictated by other events in life. I do love going to away games and I'm personally not too affected by petrol increases.

However, I'm acutely aware that this must be biting for some people. So, how will this affect you, especially if prices continue to rise?

Reduce games you attend? Look to more car sharing? Travel to Selhurst by other means? Use the coaches?

Trade Unions, Shapps, and his new threats

Shapps is making threats, is he justified? Is this an attack on the unions that will have far reaching consequences for our country?

If he changes the law it would potentially do two things. It will negate or significantly reduce the effectiveness of a strike, potentially even extending the public inconvenience, and cause an extreme backlash not just from the RMT, but unions nationwide, leading to wider spread of national strikes. Secondly, it could lead to dangerous situations for the public, where untrained and inexperienced agency workers take on certain key roles to break a strike.

Whatever your view, this smacks again of fascism from a government who think this will have great appeal out there, and deflect from Johnson's failures.

A heartfelt request to you guys that understand Photo

samedi 11 juin 2022

I’m looking for a real favour here guys, but if anyone could help I’d be eternally grateful, or pay if necessary.

I’ve got a lockdown born godson whose really struggling with interacting with other kids. He’s recently discovered Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures and it’s really bringing him on socially, it’s hard to explain but he now chats away with the kids, rather than just hitting them.

His parents took him to the Natural History Museum as a surprise today, to see Andy’s Clock, along with all the exhibits and he loved it. I mean he proper loved it, apparently he’s not stopped talking about it.

The favour I’m asking for is for one of you skilled members to turn a lovely photo into an unforgettable photo.

I’m crap at this sort of thing but I was getting there after 3 hours with an Apple Pencil but then my palm did something unintentional and I lost the lot.

If anyone could sort out a natural foreground and a skyline behind the attacking dinosaur’s I’d be eternally grateful. I.E. turn it into a lifelike photo

Forget Partygate, PPE is the real scam of this government

It was announced yesterday that Government ministers are currently refusing to release details of PPE contracts, currently being investigated by the National Crimes Agency including a company with links to the Tory peer Baroness Mone (who's apparently had her home raided and searched)

Other companies awarded included links to Michael Gove and Lord Agnew.

During the pandemic PPE was placed in the "fast lane" where government contracts were allowed to be passed on by government officials for consideration without competing bids. Over £10.5 billion of the £18 billion spent on PPE was awarded without tender competition.

The asaid company that Mone is linked to was awarded 2 initial contracts in May 2020, followed by another the following month for 122m for protective gowns but NONE were ever used.

It also currently costs the taxpayer £0.5 m a day to store unwanted/unused PPE equipment.

In Feb the government wrote off £8.7 billion it spent on PPE, with £673m unusable and £750m
expired before it could be used. The largest write off being £4.7 billion because it was acquired then for more than it is currently worth.

A further £2.6 billion was deemed unsuitable for NHS use, including £1m NHS masks (at a time where hundreds of nurses, doctors and care workers were dying and indeed infecting others, due to it's inability to do it's job).

Truly scandalous.

CPFC Stock Images

jeudi 9 juin 2022

Slightly random one.

I was browsing the BBC Sport website and noticed that the only two general Premier League related articles (i.e. not about a particular club(s)) on the homepage had Palace graphics:
- the cancellation of the Russian TV deal showing a picture of the megatron with Ukrainian flag alongside the scores
- away fan tickets held at £30 for next season with a picture of a hand holding three CPFC v Everton tickets.

Is this coincidence (nominally one in four hundred?), or some sort of marketing masterstroke where we flood the stock image market??

Any Palace in (or near) Alicante?

I'm in Alicante for a conference from the 12th-16th June.

Was wondering if any of the Palace Spanish contingent was in the area or had any recommendations for bars/food.

I'm free on Sunday 12th, if anyone fancies meeting up for a beer.

Speculation: Ronnie Edwards

I don't normally read (or trust) the Sun, but on a rainy morning in my cafe by the sea, it was the only paper the customers had left in the rack! So I took it and had a quick glance through

In a story about Palace releasing Kelly, it went on to say that in looking for a "back-up" defender to replace him, they were interested in Peterborough's Ronnie Edwards.

I do vaguely recall his name being mentioned by a journalist friend of mine a couple of months back

CCTV camera`s

Hoping the good ship BBS can help me out.I`m looking for a CCTV camera mainly to watch my bird feeders and maybe my car beyond 20 yards away.It must be solar powered and I`d like some sort of motion detector that little birds will trigger it.Also I`d like some sort of app on the phone so when the camera is activated I can watch live on my phone.Budget atound £80.Any idea`s?

Laptop Spec

Hands up, computers are not my thing. I’m wanting to buy a basic laptop, just for the internet including watching Youtube, writing letters/emails & processing basic excel spreadsheets. No games or downloading of films. What sort of spec should I be looking & budget?

Rumour: Emmauel Dennis

My spidey senses tell me the rumours are bollocks but it's on more than one 'news' sites. Seems to have an eye for goal this one, and it's always nice to have Watford's best players.

Congratulations to Wales

Especially to Wayne, who played very well, and to Jonny.

Alec John Such RIP

Alec John Such has died aged 70.

Founder member and bass player with Bon Jovi.

I enjoyed a bit of hair metal in the 80s - still do from time to time.

RIP.

Watch This Space

I think Chile may have unwittingly opened a window for Italy to go to Qatar.

They have appealed to FIFA over Ecuador fielding a supposed Colombian in all their qualifiers.

Naively thinking that the table will be rearranged.

FIFA could throw out Ecuador...but they could chose to replace them with the highest team in the rankings...or even send Ukraine.

July 10th...

Red flag workplace phrases

Just read an article talking about phrases used in the workplace that should be seen as red flags e.g.

A fast paced environment = frenetic and overworked
Must be a self-starter = won’t be given any training or support
Able to wear different hats = we are understaffed and you’ll have to do jobs you weren’t employed for
We are like a family = we expect you to do stuff outside of your actual contract and for no extra money
Salary up to £30000 = you’ll never get near £30000.

Any others that have been heard/experienced in the workplace?

I mean, it’s not as if there’s a war on, or a cost of living crisis, or a proven liar occupying number 10 is there?

10th October 1970 vs Man Utd.

Man Utd 0-1 Crystal Palace.
(Bobby Tambling 63 mins)

I was at this game and remember us playing really well against Best, Charlton, Stiles, Kidd etc.

BUT, one of the strongest memories I have of the day are the yellow socks that we wore with the away kit.

So, I've created a Subbuteo team in the kit worn on that day.

Original Subbuteo figures (stripped and repainted in the 1970's Subbuteo style) paired with modern reproduction bases.
