For over 90 years, Downe Scout Campsite has been an amazing outdoor facility enjoyed by thousands of Scouts and Guides. In November last year, when The Scout Association announced their plans to sell the site to make up a shortfall in funding, it came as a shock to many of us. Since the start of the year, Bromley Scouts has been working hard on a plan to purchase about 23 - 25 acres (just under a third) of the site to try and ensure that at least part of the historic Scout campsite is preserved for future generations of young people.
Initially, our proposed site will be relatively basic with fewer activities and will be managed and maintained by volunteers to minimise the potential financial risk to our District. However, it is hoped that with time we will be able to improve the resources and facilities at both the proposed site at Downe and Wilberforce to help fill the void with what has been lost with the sale.
As you can imagine, taking on the proposed site would be a huge undertaking and is expected to cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. Bromley Scouts is prepared to use some of our reserves towards the cost of the site however, we need to raise some further funds to get us make our plans possible. We would use the funds raised to try and purchase part of the existing Downe campsite and, if successful, potentially use any surplus to improve the facilities and activities there and at Wilberforce. If we are unable to raise the required funds, or if The Scout Association chooses to sell the site to someone else, everyone who has donated will be able to get a full refund. Please note that the purchase would be subject to final approval by the Trustees of Bromley District Scouts.
We understand that the ongoing pandemic has been difficult for many people however, if you are able to, please make a donation to help us to try and save part of Scouting history for future generations of young people.
On behalf of all of Bromley Scouts, thank you
