Mini music system for kitchen

Looking for a handy unit for the kitchen. Mostly we listen to radio nowadays, some CDs and some fed through the terrible Aux connection from phones.

Would like it to at least connect with Bluetooth, if not stream internet radio from Wifi.

We don't get DAB, but do use FM.

I don't want to get into multi-room, Sonos, blah blah blah. Please don't go there.

Which of these would the knowledgeable go for?
Denon D-T1

Sony CMTSBT100B

Panasonic SC-DM502-K
To view the link you have to Register or Login

I have an inkling that the Denon would be the least likely to be overpriced, the Sony for its 'Sony-ness', but I rather the like the Panasonic's style as a unit.

Meanwhile the boy has been using a very very very old amp of mine to play music from his phone/Spotify. I replaced this amp because it didn't have a CD input!!! I probably bought it in somewhere around 1980.

If I were to replace it with something more suited to his needs - and I figure anything would be a step up in quality - which of these look better:

Tangent Amster BTII
To view the link you have to Register or Login

TIBO SIA75
To view the link you have to Register or Login

I'm a bit confused by the significant difference in power output for a very similar price. I'm guessing that Richer Sounds are generally well priced and that therefore the Tangent has some massive difference in quality somewhere.

Thank you chaps.

Electric cars

I am a complete duffer on this, but have the government thought this through?
Whataboutery:
Millions of people who live in flats?
Millions with only off street parking?
Hotels and inns after you may have driven hundreds of miles to get there?
Car parks?
The hit on the national grid?
Visiting friends and relatives?
Places like the dreaded Center Parcs.
The batteries, are they Lithium and what happens when they die, how do we get rid of them?

Crystal Palace 84 years gone.

On this night 84 years ago the Crystal Palace burnt down. Melting glass flowing down the hill to Penge..Glow visible from Calais. Half of London was up the night watching it apparently.

Miraculous that nobody perished. Does the old girl already have a thread?

Betting odds - manipulated or reliable indicator of form

I have just started to gamble small amounts of money into football betting, and it intrigues me how betting odds are determined, and which matches are selected in their "enhanced betting selections":-

So which of the following statements are true...;-

1. Odds are a good reflection of current form/expected result.
2. Odds are manipulated, or matches are chosen to entice the punter to put money on a particular selection where the expected result does not reflect the betting odds for each outcome.
3. Matches are chosen and enhanced to entice the punter to put money on a particular selection where the predicted result is particularly uncertain.
4. Betting odds reflect only the amount of money put on a particular outcome and should not be used as a measure of form or probability.

I hope people have an insight into what goes on.... and hope it will be an interesting discussion! :D

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after.

A sad day. The plight of the Palestinian people is worse than ever.

Gary Lowe RIP

Just learned of the sad passing last month of former Palace youth team player Gary Lowe.

I don't think this has been mentioned on any of the Palace boards, but I think his passing deserves a mention. I remember him as being big mates with Steve Lovell and David Fry.

Condolences to all his friends and family.

Joining Palace in 1976 at the age of 17, Gary was a regular in the South East Counties league side and a member of Palace’s FA Youth Cup winning squads in 1977 and 1978.

He left to join Manchester City in 1979 and then had spells at Hereford United and Cheltenham Town.

He is pictured below (2nd from the right in the back row) in the triumphant 1977 FA Youth Cup winning side team group.

This obituary provides a fitting tribute to his career: To view the link you have to Register or Login

The 2020 Coronavirus poem (nicked!)

T’was a month before Christmas,
And all through the town,
People wore masks,
That covered their frown.

The frown had begun
Way back in the Spring,
When a global pandemic
Changed everything.

They called it corona,
But unlike the beer,
It didn’t bring good times,
It didn’t bring cheer.

Contagious and deadly,
This virus spread fast,
Like a wildfire that starts
When fueled by gas.

Airplanes were grounded,
Travel was banned.
Borders were closed
Across air, sea and land.

As the world entered lockdown
To flatten the curve,
The economy halted,
And folks lost their nerve.

From March to July
We rode the first wave,
People stayed home,
They tried to behave.

When summer emerged
The lockdown was lifted.
But away from caution,
Many folks drifted.

Now it’s November
And cases are spiking,
Wave two has arrived,
Much to our disliking.

Frontline workers,
Doctors and nurses,
Try to save people,
From riding in hearses.

This virus is awful,
This COVID-19.
There isn’t a cure.
Too early for vaccine.

It’s true that this year
Has had sadness a plenty,
We’ll never forget
The year 2020.

And just ‘round the corner -
The holiday season,
But why be merry?
Is there even one reason?
To decorate the house
And put up the tree,
When no one will see it,
No-one but me.

But outside my window
The snow gently falls,
And I think to myself,
Let’s deck the halls!
So, I gather the ribbon,
The garland and bows,
As I play those old carols,
My happiness grows.

Christmas ain’t cancelled
And neither is hope.

If we lean on each other,
I know we can Copenhagen 8

Who to keep?

Which players' contracts would you renew?

According to the player squad thread the following players are, or may be out of contract:

Hennessey
Henderson
Ward
PVA
Clyne
Dann
Sakho
Cahill
Meyer
Townsend
Benteke
Wickham
Batshuyai

pos. McArthur

Who is worthy of a new contract in your eyes, at this stage of the season? Michy is on a loan deal with a view to a perm move.

Palace Christmas tributes

Thought I'd lighten the atmosphere after the recent dross.

Here is my girlfriend's attempt at a Palace/London Christmas theme, created whilst I was listening to the Newcastle game.

Spiced Rum

Hi guys,

saw the original and best ale thread and though I’d start a spiced rum one. Just wondered if there’s any fans out there and any particular ones ppl think are awesome?

Most of the ones I’ve tried are commercial.

Lidl captain cook tastes like paint stripper.
Captain Morgan’s is always ok.
Captain Morgan’s gingerbread is ok -smells a bit different but tastes the same.
Cut to the spice is nice.
Two Swallows Salted Caramel and Citrus was alright but tasted of hints of burnt caramel to me so not sure I got a dodgy one.
Kraken is alright but not for me.
Dead’s men’s fingers spiced was nice.
Dead men’s fingers hemp rum was ok.
Red Leg, Sailor Jerry and Admiral Old J are awesome with Admiral Old J being my fav.

F.A. Cup Third Round draw Monday 30th November 7.10pm Who do you want?

F.A. Cup 3rd Round draw is on Monday 20th November at 7.10pm approx (live on BT Sport 1)

Who do you want?

Selhurst can have a crowd of 2000 if it's at home, if it's away and in a covid tier 2 area remains to be seen if we'd get a ticket allocation. Tier 3 areas - no fans.

Some of the numbers

14 Crystal Palace
8 Brighton & Hove Albion
7 Brentford
26 Millwall
58 Marine
60 Canvey Island or Boreham Wood
62 Milton Keynes Dons

Route One Anyone?

Playing out from the back is fine in a good team - Liverpool, Man. City etc but I don't think it works at Palace. With Liverpool the recipients are usually in motion and bomb forward. With Palace they are mostly static, meaning they either pass the ball backwards, or across the goal, often putting the defence in danger. I can't think of any goals that have come passing out from the back. With a punt upfield at least the ball is in the opponents half and there is a chance to win it in the air especially if we play Benteke. With an un-creative midfield it seems better to bypass it

Navy day 2020..

Best 11

Roy rightly being lambasted by pretty much everyone for team selection after last night but I still see a huge difference of opinion in a number of areas about what the way forward is. Left back, centre-back, centre midfield, wide players and strikers all up for debate, which actually shows how good this squad is.

So, definitively, when everyone is fit, what is our best 11 and best formation? For me it’s this, and any team we put out with injuries should be a variation of it.

————————————Guaita——————————————-

Clyne——————Tomkins————Cahill——————PVA

——————McCarthy—————Riedewald————————-

———————————— Eze——————————————-

———-Zaha—————-Batshuayi———————Schlupp

Would also love to see Max given a chance in one of the deeper midfield roles at some point, though again that will never happen under Roy.

There is a direct corrolation between my desire to see this team play and wanting Roy to go as they are mutually exclusive. Be interested to see how everyone else sees it?

Gallagher-did we make the wrong decision?

After watching the first games of the season it's clear we still lack creativity and at times a lack of bite in midfield.

With the clear benefit of hindsight I can't help but think that passing over this lad, for a recognised striker in Bats has come back to bite us and we are paying the price.

I know we were in desperate need for a striker but should we have continued to search for an alternative striker to Bats?

Suggested Team and Formation For: West Brom (away)

————————————-Guaita——————————————-
Clyne——————Tomkins—-—Cahill————————-PVA
Townsend——-—Milivojevic——Eze———————--Schlupp
———————-—-Benteke——-Zaha——————————-

Must have the option of a target man. He won’t score but we play better with him when he’s on the pitch because our midfield can’t pass and he can at least hold it up and stop the ball from coming back. Zaha will score the goals.

Milivojevic can break up play. Needs someone alongside who can pass. Eze can run the game from there. Pace out wide and up top for the counter. Eze on all the free kicks. It’s not ideal but McArthur and Kouyate should be nowhere near the starting XI and Jimmy isn’t winning ball anyway. Neither was Jairo. So why not Eze? He can let Luka sit, and go box-to-box. He can put his foot in too. Schlupp can also tuck in to help out.

New manager suggestions

Some want Roy out, some don’t, this is really a discussion about his successor, because one way or another roy won’t be with us forever .. during a lot of discussions I see the question... who else other than Roy? Well let’s throw the suggestions out there..

For me I hope we look across the globe.. 2 stand out for me

Marco Rose, 44, Borussia Monchengladbach

Julien Stephan, 40, Stade Rennes

Both young managers that have done extremely well with middle of road squads/teams.

Stephan would be my choice, he plays some good, fast pace stuff, normally 4-2-3-1 so would suit our squad. However with Rennes in CL this year because of him, I’m not sure he’d jump at chance to come here

If we go down the ‘PL experience’ route I can only see palace going for either Dyche or Howe.

Honestly, I rather we didn’t go for either but can see some positives from both.

The next appointment is huge, get it right and we will have exciting times ahead.

Player Ratings And Reviews: Newcastle (H)

Well, another Friday night match, another weekend ruined. Son's crying, thanks.

Guaita 5 - One more game to prove himself or get Butland involved.

Clyne 6 - Looked shaky at first, never seems to get the ball when he overlaps. Yet to see him cross it into our boss successfully since his return. Ward had the same problem tbf.
Cahill & Dann 5 - Just didn't work tonight. Wilson is tricky but to let Joelinton score I mean FFS....
PVA 5 - At least he can cross. I think if he is on his way out it might be time to get Mitchell more experience.

Eze 7 - Bright in the first half, faded towards the end.
McArthur 6 - Another McArthur type performance.
Kouyate 6 - Probably our biggest threat from midfield.
Townsend 6 - Distinctly average Andross again.

Schlupp 6 - Nippy and good power and technique in his shooting but it should have been a Belgian starting up top today.
Ayew 6 - Clever ball carrying up the pitch and free kick taking as per. Never seems to be too close to the six yard box when he should be though.

Ref 8 - Quite good tbf, denied them advantage quite a few times. Didn't have to book too many players.

Newcastle 5 - Hard to watch and a similar style to us but in Wilson have a player that is smart and a battler and looks like he might actually ******* score when he takes a shot.

Really gotta hope WIlf's paternity leave is over by Sunday week at Midday.

I feel a little sorry for Roy tonight funnily enough. Darlow bothered to goalkeep today but Guaita is clearly off in the summer and not bothered.

At 75 mins I thought at least we should muster our first clean sheet in a long a time and Newcastle look even ropier than us.

At 80 mins, I though fair play Roy - you are going for it once and have corrected your very bizarre formation of the last 15mins.

Then we concede from a a Newc throw-in from their half, ample chances to prevent it but we open up like the Grand Canyon, then somehow display yet worse defending to concede the second. Their second was scored by a striker that looked even less likely to score than Benteke tonight.

We just have to hope the bottom three remain well off the quality. We really need to get a win at the Hawthorns now. Nasty set of fixtures through Xmas and New Year.

Now we actually have some depth Roy doesn't seem to understand to pick those in form and shows too much loyalty to the old guard.

With so many players out of contract do you overall the team or the manager. At the moment, player power might have the edge, Roy's age may count against him. Sad way for him to bow out of his managerial career at his home club. No stand out up-and-coming replacement for Roy at the mo though.

Roy in or Out

after back to back diabolical performances, surely it's time to go.

Jairo Dropped!!!

Ok this needs it's own topic what is Roy thinking of! Surely if there's one player that should definitely play it's Jairo with what he's done this season. and he can't be injured or infected otherwise he wouldn't be on the bench. Terrible decision in my opinion.

Captain Sensible Sell Her Spark

Apologies if this has been discussed already but downloaded the new side project album from Sensible Gray Cells and the first track is this! Has there been such an overtly Palace tune before? Splendid! Should be played on match days!

Savings

I have got some savings , not huge amount and i do not want to risk any of it so only invest in normal interest savings accounts . The interest rates are rubbish at moment but i could put some away for a year in a fixed bond .
Trouble is being cautious as i am , the best rates which are still only 1% or so are in banks , bs etc that i have never heard of . Most are covered by the FSCS compensation scheme , although i am still wary as i just have never heard of them . Any thoughts ?

Burning DVD's

Hoping someone can help as i'm a bit thick with these things :)
I have just had some old slides put onto DVD. The DVD disc is a -R. The DVD plays ok via a DVD player but when I burned a copy onto a blank DVD it comes up with disc error via the DVD player but is ok via a laptop. The disc I burned to is a DVD+R DL. Anyone able to advise why the disc I burned to does not play via the DVD player?

Tories announce 100,000 deaths....meh?

mercredi 25 novembre 2020

Quote:

Tory backbencher Andrew Mitchell says he has "very strong support for virtually all of his package today".

But he says the chancellor's "proposed breaking of the 0.7% promise and the 30% further reduction in cash will be the cause of 100,000 preventable deaths, mainly among children".
Seriously? 100,000 preventable deaths will be caused by this, at a time when it is a fraction of the increase in the defence budget.

This system, and this government, is rotten to the core.

Who is this?

Girl on my facebook is trying to work out who this sports star is she had her photo with at school in the late 90s. I reckon it's an athlete as we had Kris Akabusi at our school as well, but could be any sport really.

Have You Watched More or Less Football Since March?

There has never been so much football on TV. It seems to be on every evening and throughout Saturday and Sunday.

We’ve got Sky and BT Sport subscriptions and easily found streams for the pay per view games but I just can’t drum up enough interest to watch any football outside of the Palace games. Not sure if it is just a symptom of the strange times we are in and the enthusiasm will come flooding back next year but most football seems irrelevant at the moment.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Maradona has died

Which teams do you dislike?

mardi 24 novembre 2020

Not really a thread for the obvious candidates - Millwall, Charlton, Brighton, Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea etc.. Although I don't really hate Brighton or Charlton and I have mellowed to Millwall.

When you are trawling down the results who are you hoping to see on the wrong end of a mauling? and why?

I bet we get a lot of the same names among us.

And please steer away from making it pertinent to filing this season's three relegation places.

It has to be an almost irrational hatred, based on things that only football fans would understand, and never get over, nevermind what grown up non football fans may think.

Festival of Brexit to cost upwards of £28m

You couldn't make it up. This shitty government lurches from one disaster to the next, with this idea possibly being the shitty icing on the COVID cake. A Festival of Brexit? What's to celebrate? It sounds more depressing than a four week lockdown! And what's going to be the star attraction - a trolley dash to get your food before the prices go up? The chance to win a hard shoulder pass for the M2 down to Dover? A British Bulldog gammon catwalk show? hat an incompetent, out of touch and totally insensitive bunch of bastards they are. It's beyond ridicule really, but no doubt someone on here will warm to the idea. To view the link you have to Register or Login

She is as name suggests our hero’s wife but this doesn’t distract from the fact she has a real real talent in her own right. Max Meyer

What is happening to him? Not even in the reserve team lately

Suggested Team and Formation For: Newcastle (home)

--------------------------Guaita--------------------------------
Clyne------------Dann--------------Cahill-----------------PVA
Townsend------McArthur--------Riedewald--------------Eze
------------------Benteke------------Zaha--------------------

If Zaha isn't able to play then Eze up front in the free role with Benteke, and Schlupp left midfield.

Chris Wood

I think he would be a perfect fit for us.

Len Prince RIP

lundi 23 novembre 2020

I have been advised by the club that they have been notified of the passing of Len Prince.

Sunderland born Len played for the club as an apprentice, signing professional forms in July 1971 aged around 18 and as a full-back featured in youth teams alongside the likes of Jim Cannon and David Swindlehurst. Progressing to the reserves Len was unable to break into the first team but in the early days of Malcolm Allison as manager he was selected, along with other young players, to turn out in the Anglo-Italian cup tie at home to Lazio on 4th April 1973.

It seems Len was released in 1974 and then played for Dover and Wealdstone amongst others.

Len passed away in his native north-east.

Our condolences go to his friends and family.

Player Ratings And Reviews: Burnley 1-0 Palace

Townsend was our man of the match according to statistics. I lost count of the times he apologised for something he did. Eze looked bright in the first half. Second half not so much. Pope had two massive saves to make. One after a terrible McNeil pass. The positive to take is we did create some chances without Zaha and without playing that well in general. But it’s another frustrating game. Not expecting us to win every game but we had enough of the ball to get a point out of that.

Should Gary Cahill Start The Next Game?

Dann and Kouyate have been brilliant this season, and actually I thought the whole performance this evening was pretty good, just didn't quite get the rub of the green. And of course it's hindsight, but would we have done better with Cahill? Personally I think he should be back in next game!

Worst kicking of ball for 90 minutes award...

...goes to Andros Townsend for showing us how utterly awful someone can be at passing, crossing and shooting for an entire match.

Have you ever seen someone be so inept?

1989-90 Full backs - question

Ok, this one is a bit niche, but it's one of those cases where I seem to have a gap in my memory (I'll blame it on the fact that I missed a lot of games that season as I was a student in Leeds).

Our first choice full backs at the start of the season were (I think) John Pemberton (right) and Mark Dennis (left). But Dennis didn't last long before getting injured, and Richard Shaw emerged.

My memory is of Pembo at right back and Shaw at left back (as for the FA Cup semi and final) but watching you tube videos from that season, it seems they often played on the opposite sides. Is that right? And when did they switch - was it for the Cup semi (when in fact Salako played almost as a left wing back at times) or was it before then?

Either way, it makes me feel better about shoe-horning Shaw in at right back for our best ever 11 wedding reception table plan back in 2009...

When did you get into football and Palace?

I was late to the show. My Dad showed no interest. My uncle and a cousin enjoyed the Mal and Venables years, but never took me along. Oddly he insisted his 3 boys chose different teams..so the oldest chose Palace. He probably wanted to save on taking them to games.

Thus, I followed the wankers for a while. But my football interest was Pannini and listening to Scotland on the radio in 1978. Brockley County didn't play football as a school, so my ball experience was being bullied into goalkeeping while the bullies fired a rock hard ball at me in a penalty game on concrete in the playground. Between Chinese burns, slaps if you got good grades, British Bulldog, and neck and forehead slaps.

The Team of the Eighties, Forest, Villa and Ipswich more or less passed me by. Especially as I was moved to the coast after my parents divorced and my nan and mother sent to the funny farm.

I would say my first bit of real awareness and passing and disappointment was the 82 World Cup.

I returned to Croydon to my uncle's in New Addington in 1985, and Palace for me started there. I missed the good days, and the wilderness and grew with Sir Steve's building project. Wright and I may have made our debuts in the same game. LOL

do you like a big bush ?

Stacey Solomon has made an incredibly intimate confession about her sex life with her long-term partner Joe Swash.

In a new interview, the Loose Women panellist, 30, insisted she's not ashamed of her body hair and shared actor Joe's thoughts on her appearance, stating: 'In the ’70s it was all about the bush. Luckily, Joe loves the bush, so that’s OK!'

The presenter also shed light on their five-year relationship as she admitted that while the couple have had their 'worst arguments in lockdown', she credited the hunk, 38, as her 'best friend' and revealed they're open to expanding their family.

Diana Panorama investigation

This will make a good future ‘Crown’ episode.

The claim is that Martin Bashir coerced Diana into THAT interview under false pretences. There will now be an independent investigation into the allegations. The claims involve falsification of bank statements suggesting that Diana’s closest confidants were spying on her.

Looks like Earl Spencer, William and Harry are weighing in too. BBC up to their necks in it again.

Bashir is apparently too ill recovering from covid to talk to anyone about it, but has been seen out to dinner in the last week at a swanky restaurant. Have to say, always found him a bit slimy even with the Jacko interview, despite inadvertently exposing the King of Pop’s penchant for cute looking 10 year old boys.

Do you lose more money betting on Saturday's games than on other days?

I've noticed a weekly pattern in my betting. I lose more money on Saturday's games than on other days. It's noticeable and happens nearly every week.

I have often wondered why it is. Do you have the same pattern in your bets? And if so, why do you think this is?

Legal age of consent

UK law seems pretty straightforward - Its 16
Personally I think thats about right and it's all about how the law is enforced.
Would we prosecute two 15 year olds in a relationship? Probably not, but a 16 yo lad and a one night stand with a 14 yo it gets tricky

It gets very complicated elsewhere with 'consent' being linked to marriage and an array of conditions.

Amazingly the US federal age is 12 but almost all states its 16 unless you are married. But you can marry at 13 or 14 in some states!

In Nigeria its 11

Press Conference Live: Pre-Burnley Thursday

jeudi 19 novembre 2020

Missed this earlier - busy day. Summary from club Twitter feed...

Roy: Tyrick and Tomkins both trained today and are fit. Martin Kelly also joined training following an injury he picked up. We're now waiting to see how our internationals come back.

Roy [On picking TM or PvA]: They're not dilemmas when you've got a good choice. They're both very good players.

Roy: We are only a few matches into the season. Burnley were quite low down at this stage of last season and ended up finishing very well.

Roy: Zaha is in very good form at the moment and he's playing very well. I'm sure Burnley will be wary of his ability.

Roy: My experience of Burnley is that it is always a tough game. They are a hard team to beat and most importantly of all, we know any result we get against them will be very hard-fought.

Roy: We're very pleased with our start but we are going to keep our feet on the ground. Now we have to look towards the next 8 games and make sure we are prepared for those.

Roy: Eze's been very good right from the start. His adaptation has been seamless. He's earned the respect in the squad with the talent he's shown... We will assess his fitness ahead of the weekend.

And that's it from the broadcast section! Stay tuned on To view the link you have to Register or Login for the press conference in full.

biggus mickus Happy Birthday

mercredi 18 novembre 2020

Nearly missed it you lanky ginger love machine :D

And to your Twin !

Hope you had a great day mate !

This might go down like a lead balloon, but... COVID. Your personal experience.

Sorry folks, i know i am only a rare visitor here these days but the thought of another lockdown, or indeed a continuous lockdown over Xmas is the last straw for me. I don't want to offend, and I totally sympathise if you, your family or friends have been affected by COVID, but the problem i'm having is finding many people who have either had it or know someone who has had it, or indeed, sadly passed away because of it.

You'd think with the numbers they're testing these days being 40 times higher than back in April that the odds would be that we'd all know several people who had had it, yet I spoke to a friend earlier whose wife is a senior nurse in our local Trust. He told me that the number of patients in ICU with COVID is in the single figures across both hospitals. So, despite them testing so many more and the number of positive results being high, the hospitals aren't overwhelmed as we're led to believe.

As a result i'm starting to think that we are actually making a mountain out of a molehill here. It's not the plague we're dealing with, but a virus that has killed less than 0.1% of the population, the majority of whom are elderly, have underlying health conditions and are either in a care home or hospital. Of course there are some exceptions, but on the whole that's the profile of a COVID casualty. So why then, are we locking the whole f**king country down - but not completely, as thousands of children are going to school every day?

We've been told time and time again that children and young people are a very low risk so why are we on the one hand letting 5-18 year olds go to school but not letting 18-25 year olds go to uni or just out to meet their friends? Sorry, but I just don't get it. If my son was a year younger he'd be mixing with a thousand kids a day, but because last year was his last, not only did he miss his A levels, he's also been confined to quarters for vast chunks of the year. As a result he is slowly going crazy. i try and find evidence that this "plague" is just waiting to grab us, but i can't. As a family, we know no one who has had COVID, let alone died from it. You'd think that given it's in the news every day and we're told X more had tested positive a x more have died that we would know at least one person who succumbed to it, but we don't.

As i say, sorry to sound harsh or uncaring. The reverse is true, but i really would like to hear some stories of personal experience that suggest to me that the wrecking of millions of livelihoods, the loss of businesses, the mental health problems and deep recession that will take years to climb out of that we're creating are worthwhile when weighed up against the effects of the virus. Whenever I raise the issue on a forum inevitably someone replies "if your mum had died you'd think differently". Fact is, I wouldn't. i believe that the damage caused from the fall out of lockdowns will have a far worse impact on millions than any virus ever could. but I am prepared to be proved wrong by some of your stories and evidence of where I am missing something in the greater scheme of things.

Palace Youth Team 67,68,69

Has anybody any information re the Palace Youth for 1967,68 & 69 ?

A friend of a friend who played in that team has sadly lost all his memorabilia from his time playing for the club. He is hoping that somebody may have programs or any other items that he could copy to replace his treasured items.

The only thing he has left is a program from the Surrey Youth Cup quarter final against Horsell Youth in February 1968

The only player in Palace team I recall is Bobby Goldthorpe who made the odd appearance in the early 70's before leaving for Charlton. The full Palace team that night was :

Coupland

Webber
Brown

Goldthorpe
Bell
Gonzales

Broad
Howard
Grove
Stanton
Prime

Sub Lewis

Any information would be gratefully received. If any of the players from that side reads this post I am sure if they wish to contact their former team mate I would be happy to put you in touch. Thank you

Hell Let Loose

Like Squad but WW2 based. Just yanks v jerries based atm but updates due soon. Never played a game like it before, great fun running about shooting and blowing each other up, or dying a lot in my case. Better with a headset so you can chat to each other and not disturb the missus as well. Anyone else tried it?

Chromebook thread

Any one else using one? I bought a Duet as a test to see if I can break away fully from Microsoft, but mainly Apple and so far so good. Only thing is the single USBc port. I bought a little hub for external stuff but it wont run power at the same time. Any advice on anything?

Static home. Location needed.

No, I haven’t become a Charlton fan overnight.

A situation has arisen whereby the wife’s mother has managed to purchase a static home to live in ... brand new £75k and it’s all she has in the world. No savings, no house... it’s a very long and painful story. Don’t ask. The upshot is that she doesn’t want to live in it ... she’s spent two weeks in it in total since she bought it. The bandits she bought it off last year have offered her £18k.

Long story short, we need to move it down the country from ooop north and I’m wondering if anybody on the BBS could recommend a good site to relocate it to?

We’re looking to sell it privately but can’t do that whilst it’s 300 miles away and we will use it for weekends in the meantime so want somewhere “nice” to put it. Preferably within a ninety minute drive of Croydon.

Anybody have any experience of this sort of thing?

Which pisstake/joke about Palace made you laugh?

I must admit after the 9-0 stuffing at Anfield I did LOL at the "What have Michael Jackson and Perry Digweed got in common" joke.

Running time is 90 minutes. Please remember that it is VHS quality.

Reducing File Size

I have two camera shots of one page each I need to send online.

The stupid governmental system says you can attach up to 5 jpg, pdf docs, but only gives you a maximum of 7MB to send.

Sod's law means that these file are 4MB each as JPGs and three times as much each as PDFs. I don't know why they are so big.

What is the easiest way of reducing their size on my dektop or downloading them from my camera in a smaller size?

Is an online scanner the best option?

England

i've got to say, I'm fond of Southgate's England - even though three at the back gets routinely destroyed by anybody with any tactical nous, and Zaha should be there, it is fun watching them attack nowadays.

Looking forward to tonight's match!

Frankly that sort of bears out what I felt when he came on loan that he is a bit of a pl*nker given the comments he had already made. It seems he has a rather inflated view of his talents

One for the proper blokes among us, of which I am sadly not one.

Got a little Bosch PSB 1800 combi-drill for most household jobs but I can’t get through masonry very well with it. Mrs has asked me to put a blind up later and after the last time I attempted it with the Bosch I think I am going to need something a bit more powerful this time. Don’t want to spend too much (DIYer) but I am also a believer in the buy cheap buy twice mantra and want one that will last and have enough grunt for most DIY jobs. Don’t mind a cord given how seldom I will use it, budget is about £200 including any special bits I’ll need.

Recommendations welcome:p

Rumour: Marcos Alonso

Crystal Palace are looking at Chelsea left back Marcos Alonso as a potential replacement for out-of-contract defender Patrick van Aanholt.

Van Aanholt is one of a several Palace players whose deals run out at Selhurst Park at the end of this season.

Though the club hope the popular Dutchman stays, there is strong interest in Alonso as an alternative with Marseille's Jordan Amavi also being tracked.

Alonso, 29, has fallen out of favour at Chelsea this season and hasn't featured since being substituted at half-time when they were 3-0 down to West Brom in September.

There were reports the disgruntled Spaniard then tried to watch the second half of the Hawthorns match on the Chelsea team bus - prompting a furious reaction from manager Frank Lampard.

Palace are hoping to capitalise on a good start to the season under Roy Hodgson by holding talks with a number of players over their long-term futures.

Midfielder Jairo Riedewald is likely to be the first to re-sign this week with discussions also active with Scott Dann, Vicente Guaita, Gary Cahill, Tyrick Mitchell and Van Aanholt.

Training Shirt Sizing

Sorry couldn’t find an existing thread to post on.

Does anyone have the sky blue training shirt? Wondering how it fits? I’m usually a medium but a large in the fans fit shirt...

Thanks

Will Ireland win a game under Stephen Kenny?

Six down, how many to go? Of all the Ireland managers I can recall he seems to have the least suitable background. Only our old Dutch manager would be a worse choice. Mick McCarthy may not be a sexy manager but at least he had a clue. Why were some people happy to see him come in. Ireland will not qualify for anything until the IFA realise their disaster. Go for an ex player like Robbie Keane or a proven manager like Chris Hughton.

5:30pm weekday kick off!

WTF! How can this be allowed?

Your all time top five football kits

vendredi 13 novembre 2020

I thought this might be fun...we all love a smart kit.

The one rule is that you can only pick one Palace kit, so let's see what else in the big wide world tickles your fancy. Here's mine, you will note that my tastes are very much contained within a certain era.

1. Palace 'Team of the 80s' Admiral sash (the mid 80s Hummel sash runs it incredibly close though)
2. Argentina 1986 world cup winners (iconic simple design and I just love that shade of blue)
3. West Ham 1980 away kit (underrated classic, minimalist design with the claret and blue piping on the white. Maybe my memory of a sunny FA cup final day sways me a bit but I've always thought it was great)
4. Denmark mid-80s Hummel 'streaky bacon' (if pushed I would probably go for the away kit over the home)
5. Luton Town early 80s David Moss / Ricky Hill era (the one with the vertical orange stripe on white, to the side of the shirt)

Honourable mentions for Maradona era Napoli with the Mars sponsor and the early 80s Dundee United number, tangerine and black.

Over to you...those who are clevererer than me might like to include pictures so we can appreciate the full glory.

Approved, but I bet it never gets built. I can see the arguments of both sides, but thinking traffic will reduce on the A303 seems wishful. I'm surprised more traffic doesn't just divert through the village at the rear of Stonehenge.

US National Team - Road to World Cup Championship

A little background, my friend and I have these things called Real Man's Bets, where we pick some outrageously unlikely event and act like we're smarter than everyone for no reason. For example, he told me before the season started his RMB was Everton to win the league. (which looked good for a minute) A few weeks ago, I said my RMB was the US to win the World Cup in 2026. My basis for that was merely the fact that eight Americans were in Champions League squads and eight Americans were in Europa League squads.

Erasing the foul taste of failing to qualify for the last World Cup starts this weekend. A team of European based players (plus one MLSer and one from the Brazilian league) with an average age of 21 will have friendlies against Wales and Panama. Christian Pulisic is missing due to injury and Josh Sargent had to stay with Werder Bremen due to Covid restrictions. Here's their squad for this weekend:

Goalkeepers:
Zack Steffen - age 25 - Manchester City
Ethan Horvath - age 25 - Club Brugge
Chituru Odunze - age 18 - Leicester City
Defenders:
Tim Ream - age 33 - Fulham
John Brooks - age 27 - VfL Wolfsburg
Matt Miazga - age 25 - Anderlecht
Reggie Cannon - age 22 - Boavista
Antonee Robinson - age 23 - Fulham
Sergiño Dest - age 20 - Barcelona
Chris Richards - age 20 - Bayern Munich
Midfielders:
Weston McKennie - age 22 - Juventus
Sebastian Lletget - age 28 - LA Galaxy
Tyler Adams - age 21 - RB Leipzig
Johnny Cardoso - age 19 - Internacional de Porto Alegre
Richard Ledezma - age 20 - PSV
Yunus Musah - age 17 - Valencia
Owen Otasowie - age 19 - Wolverhampton Wanderers
Forwards:
Timothy Weah - age 20 - Lille
Ulysses Llanez - age 19 - Heerenveen
Konrad de la Fuente - age 19 - Barcelona
Nicholas Gioacchini - age 20 - Caen
Giovanni Reyna - age 17 - Borussia Dortmund
Sebastian Soto - age 20 - Telstar

Pulisic, McKennie, Adams and Reyna are locks to be the backbone of the 2026 team and will hopefully be joined by a proven goalscorer and another dynamic attacking midfielder to go with a solid defense. Hopefully, they don't get embarrassed by Wales and held to a 0-0 draw by Panama this weekend.

Match Updates: Nov 11th - 18th

mardi 10 novembre 2020

It’s international week and some pretty huge games for N Ireland and Scotland coming up. The Scots looking to qualify for their first tournament since 1998. As someone that grew up seeing strong Scotland sides compete in nigh on every tournament, it’s shocking to think that there are actually Scottish adults today - parents even - that have never experienced watching their nation in the Euros or a World Cup tournament.

Anyway...COME ON SERBIA!

Due to the footballing governing bodies wise decision to hold untold international friendlies in the middle of a pandemic, there’s a fun game to be played over the next few days....predict how many Premier League players get covid this week.

Football Manager 2021

The beta is out now... full release is 21st November but the beta is the full game just minus the bugs. Can play it for as long as you want unlike the demo where it stops when you hit January. Only dumb question I have is where are people buying it from? CDKeys and ShopTo have it cheaper than Steam but I don't know if that includes the beta like Steam provides?

Rumour: Manchester City and Liverpool renew interest in Crystal Palace starlet Zion Atta

lundi 9 novembre 2020

Manchester City and Liverpool have renewed their interest in prising Crystal Palace prospect Zion Atta away from the Selhurst Park club.

England youth forward Atta, 15, remains in demand after impressing in Palace’s youth setup.

Palace, who have high hopes for Atta, paid Millwall a guaranteed £60,000 to sign him from their south London rivals aged 13.

Atta who has also been monitored by German trio Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach and Augsburg.

50 US States Vs 50 European Countries

If you were to do a road trip, spending 1 to 2 days on average in each state/country, which of these two would you pick?

We'll say a modest budget; so staying in 3 star hotels and eating more at diners/trattorias than Michelin star restaurants. We'll also say there are no covid concerns.

I think after a while I would probably get bored of the US, so Europe for me.

Nations League

Anyone care for this? A competition congesting up fixtures and carrying around the virus just seems ridiculous and unnecessary. Now this game might be postponed and they'll have to sneak it in at a later date with another international break... bored of it

Best Centre Back pairing when everyone is fit

Hard to call at the moment, personally I would say it’s Cahill and Tomkins however, Kouyaté has been brilliant this season as a centre back and Dann and Kelly have been good when called upon this season and last season. It seems that a lot of people have had enough of Sakho’s mistakes. But what do people think?

Best ever 2nd string

We surely have the strongest 2nd XI that we have ever been able to name, in the club's history..

Gk - Butland
RB - Ward
CB - Tomkins
CB - Cahill
LB - Mitchell
MF - Meyer
MF - McCarthy
MF - Milivojević
MF - Schlupp
CF - Benteke
CF - Batshuayi

Leaves no space for Hennessy, Kelly, Sakho, Wickham

Suggested Team and Formation For: Burnley (away)

----------------------------Guaita-------------------------------
Clyne----------Kouyate-------------Dann---------------PVA
Townsend-----McArthur----------Riedewald-----------Eze
-----------------Benteke------------Zaha-----------------

After Hodgson's masterful switch in tactics against Leeds, bringing in Eze (who will surely now remain in the side until the end of the season) and Ayew (to replace a guy who is only a finisher) in order to add energy, I wonder if we might counter Burnley's aerial strength by bringing in Benteke?

I expect he will stick with Ayew. Otherwise the only other decision to make is Dann or Cahill. Still not sure Dann has the mobility of our other centre backs, but against Burnley it shouldn't matter, and I expect Dann to keep his place as well. So unchanged most likely.

A safe place for Brexit voters to apologise

samedi 7 novembre 2020

Calling all Brexit voters.

As the serious consequences of how this government has handled Brexit negotiations, with threats from the EU of legal action for breach of the withdrawal agreement (and international law), along with the double whammy of the US refusing to play ball over a trade deal if the Good Friday Agreement is compromised in anyway (resulting in meaningful trade deals for our great country being thin on the ground), I offer this olive branch of a thread, where you can admit you were wrong and apologise to us all, without anyone calling you a ****.

Please see this as your first step to redemption, a cathartic moment if you like, where you can unburden yourself of the guilt you will at some point be feeling for playing your part in totally ******* up this great country of ours.

You may not need this thread now or even see a need for it, but at some point you will be thankful that it is here for you.

Chris Wilder

He has taken Sheffield United on an almost continuous upward rise for a few years now, 2 promotions and a great first season in the Prem. But they have been well and truly found out and are right up against it now. Can't see him being sacked but it will be interesting to see if he can turn this round, because it's probably the first time in years they have hit a really bad patch.

Great First Albums - thereafter rubbish!

Hopefully we don't have one of these already :

For me the first Dire Straits album (entitled "Dire Straits"), released back in the late 70s was superb. After that, utter utter sh1t.

Kings of Leon's "Youth and young Manhood" - superb, but all the material afterwards has been average.

What's yours?

Watches

Bonjour

I'm being badgered to let my wife and kids know what I want for my birthday. To be honest I'm not particularly bothered but they keep mentioning a watch. I've not worn a watch for 25 years or so but do occasionally hang my nose over a couple but never push the button.

If I do go for one, I'm not big into fashion brands like Armani etc, doesn't do anything for me and I'd rather go for a proper watchmaker than a brand (although some of the Boss ones do look nice)

I'm not talking Rolex here, budget of around £500 so I'm hoping you can get something half decent for that.

As I say, as I'm not a watch man, I'd appreciate any advice and opinions on both watches themselves and any online companies that come recommended.

TIA

Investment ideas.

mercredi 4 novembre 2020

So having been made redundant and receiving some money I decided to go on a benefits calculator to see if I could receive any money in regards to housing etc. As I have over £16000 i can receive no help but i can receive £75 a month jobseekers allowance which is better than a kick in the balls.

When filling in the form it asked what savings you had to work out your claim. After I put in my £16000 total it then claimed via the Governments formula for calculating interest,my weekly income from this would be £40 a week, £160 a month or £1920 a year so that is roughly 12%.

If anyone knows where I can get 12% on my money, please let me know but I do not want to risk it in shares.

Analysis from the excellent experimental361

To view the link you have to Register or Login

This is one of the yearly articles I enjoy. Essentially, it breaks down various statistics determining how teams perform offensively and defensively.

Graph One: Shots Taken vs Shots Faced Per Match
It is no surprise to see that we have the worst shots per/game ratio in the league, whilst also having the 2nd busiest defence.

Graph Two: Shots Taken Per Match vs Shots Taken Per Goal Scored
Again, we appear in the left most position, fortunately, we have been relatively clinical.

Graph Three: Shots Faced Per Match vs Shots Per Goal Conceeded
Not exactly where we'd want to be, high up in the shots faced, but a combination of having an excellent shot stopper, last ditch blocks and giving up low quality chances has seen us concede at a reasonable rate.

Graph Four: Expected Goals Created Per Match vs Expected Goals Conceded Per Match The chances we have created are suggesting we create enough for 1.2 goals/game while we allow 1.6 goals/game.

Takeaways: We have seen some very hot and cold performances this season. A complete failure going forwards in games against Brighton and Chelsea, most notably. Some may point out that we have been on the wrong-side of 5? marginal offside calls. However, we are seeing a strong reoccurring theme from last season: there isn't enough creativity in this team. We score at pretty much the rate we are expected to score at. We concede at a slightly better rate than we would expect to.

To improve as a side, I can see four areas in which we could work on:
  • Take our chances more clinically.
  • Create more chances.
  • Concede fewer chances.
  • Our goalkeeper performs better.

On point one, I do think the goals will come for Batshuayi after seeing three goals ruled out. He will need to time his runs better, but the finishes against Brighton and Wolves were hugely encouraging.

On point two, this is the most obvious area where we can improve. We have Eze, who is not being used from the start. We have more options on the bench than we have done last season. Excuses are running out for Roy on this front for me.

On point three, we aren't going to concede fewer chances without controlling possession of the ball more effectively. Again, this is an area we can improve as a team, and I think we good enough players to do so.

On point four, Guaita performed heroics last season and hasn't quite hit the same standard this season. We massively over relied on him and it paints a scary picture should his form drop any further.
