Everton v Leicester

15:00

Bit of a killer of a K.O at Goodison. Watch for the bleary eyed and green faces.

Happy new year

Happy new year everyone, hope 2019 is great for everyone :p

Manchester incident

Sounds serious.

Every goal of 2018

From the good folks at the club. I counted 49 (9 pens) but some were pretty fleeting, could've added a minute to the run time.

Huge fire in Croydon.

Just reported on tv ?

West Ham sign Nasri

Not sure about the morality of what he did; to me it seemed more about treatment than cheating though I could be wrong and it's not like the football authorities to err against the prominent. However, I think he'll be an asset to them and I don't like that.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Wife has it on the dvd player playing ... God it's such a ****ed up female film and so crap.

Used car inspection

Tomorrow I’m planning to look at and hopefully drive a very low mileage (43,000 miles) 2008 Mercedes C350 (3.5litre petrol) sports saloon with a very high spec.

Can anyone recommend a good car inspection service, preferably with written valuation?

I’m loath to use the AA or similar, because the last time I used them they missed that the bonnet had been poorly repaired with copious amounts of filler (I had not noticed because I had viewed the car in the rain).

The complication is that it’s a private sale located in Felixstowe (I live in SE London). 🦊

Rules are as follows

1 Every player has 200 points to bet with in the first round.

2 Each separate bet made is 10 points meaning players have 20 bets during the first 20 days. Maximum bet on a single market is 10 points, same rule applies for identical multis (basically no duplicate bets though you can do a team A, team B double on one bet and then add team C for a treble in another bet)

3 In the second round the 4* finalists all start by carrying forward 25% of their score from the first round added to the 150 points that can bet used in the second round. The person who qualifies for the final with the most points also gets an additional 10pt bet. (*if the number of participants gets to 16 or more, then a 5th finalist place will be added and then one more for every 5 players on top of that).

4 Betting Masters, first group stages runs from 0000 on the first of the month (standard UK time) to 2359hrs on the 20th of the month. Then the top four* posters come together in a mini league from there on until the end of the month.
Final bet settlement must occur before 2359 on the last day of the month.

5 Naturally the winner is the person with the highest score at the end of the last day of the month.

6 Scoring consists of total winnings and is inclusive of 10 point stake i.e. someone bets on a 6/4 horse and it wins their score becomes 25 (15 points profits plus the 10 pt stake) There is no score for any bets not used. Losing bets are scored as zero, not -10.
Any bet from an exchange bookie will have a 4% commission (on the winnings), if nothing else is explicitly stated in the post.

7 Players must quote where they're getting their prices.

8 Singles and upwards accepted.

9 For boxed multis and bets such as Yankees, each separate bet within the bet counts as separate and will cost 10pts per bet. e.g. ten trebles from five selections will use up 100 points.

10. E/W bets are counted as two bets in the masters, which means 10 points x 2

11. For tracking purposes, players are requested to put the outcome of their bets on the post for all events other than European soccer/tennis.

12. Where possible players are requested to put down a running total of their bets in their posts, although I'll also try and produce rolling league tables where possible.

13. After a bet has been posted up, one is not allowed to edit it..

14. The bets must be possible to do in real life, meaning for example that if you got a multi, all the odds have to come from 1 bookmaker. You can’t shop around for the highest odds and put them together. "Special promotion" type bets are not allowed though BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) are.

15. Bets must be placed at odds of 1/10 (or 1.1 in decimal) or higher

16. Any Draw No Bet bets where the result is a push will always have the bet settled as void, never 10pts. Any asian handicap bet where the result is a push (in full) will have the bet settled as void. Any asian handicap where half of the stake is returned will be marked down as 5pts with the remainder of the Asian handicap settled as a win or a loss (this is applicable for asian handicaps such as 2.25 or -2, -2.5 etc)

17. In the event that a player is not sure if their bet will finish in time, before midnight on the 20th or midnight for qualifying midnight on the final day of the month for the final, they can make a provisional bet or bets which then become actual bets only if their original selection(s) finishes at 12.01am or after

Coming off 'Social Media'...

Been thinking about this for a while - I genuinely think its becoming a drain on the soul.

But... The one thing I think I will miss is keeping up to date with things - news, palace team etc etc...

Anyone else just thrown in the towell? Is there a way of keeping informed without being dragged down by the all crap that goes with it?

I use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram currently.... Thinking of dicthing all 3

Happy New Year

It's 2019 here (you'll catch up) so Happy New Year to all.

BBS Lawyers help required

Wonder if any BBS lawyers can help.

My salary is due today and has not been paid. The MD of my company is a shady character and this kind of thing has happened in the past with payments getting made later in the day. But recently his general behaviour has been at best unreliable and mostly pretty outrageous. It is getting to the point where I am thinking of reporting him as being unfit to be a company director. However after looking into this it seems to me that morally bad behaviour which he is guilty of is not enough, he needs to be failing in his legal responsibilities.

Some examples of his antics are:

Putting his original company (I was employed by) into administration and starting a new one. This bit is perfectly legal but we were told we would all be tuped over to the new company after consultations and receive new contracts. We have had no consultation or contracts but were simply put on new company payroll.
Our pension contributions are being deducted from our salaries but not being paid into the fund. We have been notified by the pension company he has been reported for this.
For several weeks the company had no insurance of any kind.
His wife counts cash received and banks it but if she counts say £1K, she records that then banks a lower amount. Never gives any explanation so is robbing money.
There are plenty of other examples but does this constitute he is an unfit director or just a total c unit?

Suggestion: Josh Maja

dimanche 30 décembre 2018

London lad scoring for fun at sunderland. Age 20 with contract up in August and unlikely to sign a new one. A real future prospect with Sunderland looking to sell.

Is signing a striker the answer to our problems?

Roy took a striker who’d scored 17 PL goals the previous season, and got three out of them.
I dread to think the total number of goals centre forwards have scored under Roy during his tenure.
The entire team snatch at chances, and can’t even force saves from the keeper often. Other teams have worse players and less strikers and still score.
Our goals this season have basically been worldies and penalties.

Will signing a striker actually fix everything? I don’t think it will.

Minimum Wage at Selhurst discussion

Really owes us fans in the Arthur something before the Main Stand kicks in. We have to put up with atrocious conditions in the stand. It's a disaster waiting to happen. He also needs to push minimum wage to the matchday staff, f**king hate that our club aren't doing that for the young people who work for us .

Player Ratings And Reviews: Chelsea home

can't be bothered to say much, but it was just like Spurs at home a few months back.
Were chelsea there for the taking - I think so.
Did we have a go - no.
Did we offer the usual endeavour without showing any class - yes
Are we a dour team to watch? - in general yes

Suggested Team and Formation For: Wolves

What I’d go for:

Guaita
Wan-Bissaka - Tomkins - Sakho - van Aanholt
Townsend - McArthur - Milivojevic - Meyer - Zaha
Wickham

SUBS: Hennessey, Ward, Kelly, Kouyate, Puncheon, Schlupp, NEW STRIKER

Even a case for swapping Kouyate and Luka, but Luka is our captain.

What I’m expecting:

Guaita
Wan-Bissaka - Tomkins - Sakho - van Aanholt
Townsend - McArthur - Milivojevic - Kouyate - Meyer
Zaha

The old 1st division V the Premiership entertainment wise which is best ?

Well ?

time for hodgson to go

this bloke is clueless.schulpp for meyers.prick.townsend and zaha up front????? two positions you have to play goalie striker.hodgson just a yes man.**** him and parish

Unacceptable

I understand being defensive minded v the big boys but Setting up like we are a non league side v a champions league side isn’t good enough. Did we even have a shot today? Their keeper could’ve stayed home and had a lovely Sunday roast.

We give sides too much respect. Just have a ******* go at them. Not good enough

Amazon Echo

Need some help as I’m going round in circles.

I own a Sonos One which is great, couldn’t be without it but it would be great to get an Echo. I don’t know which to get, the Echo or Echo dot. I plan on getting Dots for the bedrooms but I’m sure I read somewhere that if I already have a Sonos then all I really need is the Dot in the lounge but will just having Dots restrict me to being unable to use smart bulbs/lights etc.

Crystal Ball Chelsea (h)

Game getting closer couldn’t see a thread?

Palace 1-0 Chelsea

Wickham 62

Att.25,531

Suggested Team and Formation For: Chelsea

Same again or do we need to tighten up and rest some players? Is Wickham ready to start? Does Kelly get a look in after injury?

Bookings-upcoming suspensions

Thought it would be useful thread - Sure others may think otherwise.

Milivojevic I believe is on 4 yellow cards. If he gets booked against Chelsea does he miss Wolves or it resets?

Also any other players on 4?

Electricity unit cost up 25% in the new year, at least for me

Don't have gas, so a single fuel energy household (have oil for heating).

I always use USwitch for changing my supplier and for the past three or four years have managed by switching suppliers to maintain the level of my energy costs. However, this time, going through the switching process have noticed that my KWhr unit cost has risen from 12.47p to 15.9p. Although you can find a lower daily standing charge, it is the unit cost that has the most impact on annual cost of energy.

Virtually all the comparison companies are using at least 16p per unit now. This is the first time I have not been able to maintain cost at a reasonable level, and it represents a total increase even with a better standing charge, of around 15% a year.

Worrying for those like me, on a fixed income.

Penalties

From BBC

To view the link you have to Register or Login

An interesting stat:

If football clubs had DNA (spoiler: they don't) then Crystal Palace's would be a penalty kick on a penalty spot.

No club has proven more likely to win them in the Premier League era, and the pair they were awarded against Arsenal in October took them two clear of West Ham and four ahead of Newcastle since August 2004, despite the fact they'd played 228 games fewer than both clubs in that period.

I dare say mainly down to Wilf and AJ... and the fact is we have been robbed of many more that should have been given!

Press Conference Live: Pre-Chelsea Friday 1:30pm

Summary from club Twitter feed...

Roy's here for his pre-Chelsea press conference. #CRYCHE Watch it live!

Roy: No new injuries and Christian's progressing well. He's the only one still unavailable, the rest have recovered.

Roy: I'm pleased that the atmosphere is good here at the training ground. It has been for a long time now and I'm pleased it's survived the busy period and Boxing Day's disappointment.

Roy: Very difficult [to contain Hazard]. He's correctly regarded as one of the best in the world, a top player. He's got all the skills, but he's also wise and knows when to use them: when to pass, when to go.

Roy: Winning a game last year means nothing to you trying to win a game this year. We're in the #PL to play the Chelseas of the world. On paper we're not favourites, but it's not over until the final whistle.

That's it from the boss, thanks for following. The full video will be online shortly. Official #CPFC app To view the link you have to Register or Login

Best moments from 2018

For me the introduction of Wan-Bissaka and hoping we can keep him here for years to come :lux: and of course Andros goal and the win at City.

JD Sports

Is there any chance they can change that Sponser to red and blue? It look so awful in yellow and black.

It would make a lot of difference to the look of the ground.

MOTD Uploads

I recently created a Google account in order to upload our segment of MOTD to My Drive each week. Account details are:

Email: cpfc.bbs 'at' gmail.com
Password: crystalpalace

You will need to make sure you are completely logged out of any other Google account you may have otherwise you will get error messages. I've just uploaded yesterday's segment.

Which utfield player would go in goal?

Hopefully just a hypothetical situation but picture the scene. Sixty minutes into the game, all three subs have been used (I did say it was hypothetical), the red and blue mists descend and our goalkeeper is sent off. Who would you expect to take his place?

I think that I would go for Kouyaté, he's got the height. We have other tall players in the back four but I would rather keep them in position if we had an outfielder in goal.

Feel free to also use this thread to reminisce about the time Salako went in goal after Nigel Martyn got a red card.

2018/19 Title Race

I'm dreading Liverpool winning the title but that's the way it's heading.

City are dropping the ball, Chelsea aren't good enough. Spurs looking more likely than City at the moment.

Can you see Liverpool keeping this up?

Van Dijk was the key.

Very worrying. Has predicted so many awful events.

Hitting the woodwork

No Premier League team had hit the woodwork more than us this season. Were equal top with Chelsea on 12. We only hit it 8 times in the whole of last season.

Ambition

Certain, negative posters grumbled today about our 'lack of ambition.' Yes, it seems we will have another false dawn season of reconstruction at best. But is that a sign of a 'lack of ambition' or just misjudgement?

I don't pretend to know our club's finances, the fine details of FFP allowances or whether we should be willing to violate those rules even to some small degree. Weed and QPR are examples of clubs who have tried it to piss-take levels of chicanery. But Parish seems to want to obey spending boundaries and it seems we have overspent so heavily, particularly in the era of the purchases of Benteke through to Sahko, that we must now rein it in. Surely that period of spending, beyond our means, speaks of a high ambition that must now be corrected? Or is that the board's excuse not to spend?

Am I missing something that justifies the allegation of a 'lack of ambition?' Do those grumbling about 'ambition' have a point or are they just blind to reality / miserable sods?

Player Ratings And Reviews: Crystal Palace V Cardiff City

Poll to follow

We will lose Wilf...

...if the club do not bring in a capable striker and sort out this situation once and for all.

This piece on the BBC today sums it up:

"the inventiveness he displayed to provide Max Meyer and Connor Wickham with gilt-edged chances warranted more than the errant finishing that followed"

Errant finishing after Wilf puts it on a plate for players. The club has got to show our best players that we have ambition and that they should stay. I think this is a missing piece of the argument around bringing a striker in. We have got to show our best players that we mean business and strive to improve on the pitch. Wilf is so talented, I do not want to see him go, it must be infuriating having to play up front for half a season and finally getting back out to the wing but having such a lack of composure in the middle.

Torvill and Dean

Anyone see this drama last night? Explored their early years.

Read quite a bad review of it but thought it was well done and enjoyed it. Not sure how close to the truth it was but didn’t realise Christopher Dean was such a driven and very serious perfectionist.

I believe the pair helped in the writing of it.

Best and worst Christmas presents

I am married. No kids.

I emailed everyone 4 weeks ago to say "Do not buy me 5hlt. It will only go in the bin"
At my age (50), I have about everything I could reasonably want. I have a house and car, and live in very reasonable comfort. I don't have a Mercedes, or a swimming pool, but I live a happy life within my means.

The 5hlt presents:
What I don't fkvcing need are chocolates, more chocolates, gift-boxed hand balm with the 5hlt logo of "live, laugh, love", and gift-boxed 'Lynx' anti-perspirant. They are going to the Charidee shop ASAP

The good presents:

Crystal Ball Mid-Season Final Place Punt

The mid point of the Season is the Chelsea game. Therefore, the traditional MSFPP (what a catchy acronym) closes at kick off for the Wolves game. (7.45pm 2nd January.) In other words, you have a week to revise (or hold firm) on your To view the link you have to Register or Login

You know what to do people. 42% and way in the lead at the moment. Make it happen.

Keith Millen's new job - assistant manager at Halmstad (swedish second division)

He feels a bit overqualified for this job, but apparently Roy Hodgson's history and contact with Halmstad BK (Bollklubb = Ballclub) helped facilitate this move.

Halmstad being the team that Crystal Palace beat with 6-1 during the preseason tour, and the team that Roy Hodgson won the swedish league with, during the 70's.

Halmstad had a strong start last season, and was expected to battle for promotion, but lost their pace during the run in (correct word?), and finished with some distance to the play off places.

Merry Christmas Everyone

To all my fellow Palace fans,

What wonderful feeling it is to be sitting here after that truly astonishing win we had against City. It really has made my Xmas so special this year.

That truly amazing goal that the whole footballing world is talking about and the lovely story about the little kid who got Andros’s shirt and how Andros’s dad is organising for it to be signed.

It’s been a tough first half to the season but those lads out there have shown nothing but commitment to the cause I can’t fault them despite the results. Hopefully a striker can change that.

Anyway thank you Palace and here’s hopefully to a better second half to the season. I know everyone will be hung over but let’s make tomorrow special and make Selhurst deafening.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Worth a thread all of it's own... Owned every Smash game except Brawl, one of my favourites and so many hours of fun especially trying to unlock all the characters. Has anyone got it yet?

chess

Generally about chess, but some specific parts about Bobby Fischer.

I went to chess club at school, and played chess with my dad from 7yrs-10yrs. (before video games).
It's intellectually challenging, and gives the brain some exercise.

In the 1970's we even had chess programmes on TV, which was better than snooker, because we only had a black and white TV.

I was reading about world chess champion Bobby Fischer recently. He once played 12 matches simultaneously, winning 10 and drawing 2.

His intellect must have been massive.
So why waste it on a board game ?
Fischer even wrote a Best Seller " My best 60 games of chess". How the fck can you remember all the moves from those games, and the decision-making process behind them ?

I realise most lower players, play for intellectual stimulation.

But at the very top, it's a bit like me having the dexterity to be a top-class neuro-surgeon, but opting to be a World Champion of 'Operation'.

thoughts ? does anyone care ?

Everyone still whacking off over the Townsend goal ? :D

Do you get extension plugs where the cable comes out the side of plug?

Sorry for boring question. But my parents have a lot of plug sockets very close to the carpet so you can’t get plugs in very easily.

Do you get extension plugs where the cable comes out the side of the plug? Don’t think I’ve ever seen plugs like that.

Frank de Boer appointed manager of Atlanta United

With manager Tata Martino departing the team to manage Mexico, Atlanta United was in need of a new manager. And to fill that vacancy, they scoured the Earth to find the best man for the job and found, Frank de Boer.

Quote:

“Frank de Boer has a distinguished background, both as manager and player, and we’re ecstatic to welcome him to our club,” Atlanta United President Darren Eales said. “When we began our search, we were determined to find someone who fit all of our criteria. In addition to meeting our club’s core values, Frank’s philosophical views for how to play unequivocally aligns with ours. He also has a proven track record of developing youth players, with many of them going on to star for top European teams. Finally, his multilingual capabilities, including Spanish and English, ensure a smooth transition in the leadership of our club.”
To be honest, he should find managing the best team in the US a little easier than managing a yearly relegation struggler.

family fall-outs over Christmas

dimanche 23 décembre 2018

Always good for a retrospective chuckle.

My dad, me and two cousins were playing scrabble on Christmas day evening. The board was set up, the tiles selected and large measures of Jack Daniels poured. Mmmm , tasty
Me to go first.

ADVENTS - a seven letter opening stonker

dad: "you can't have ADVENTS, because it's a noun with a capital letter. Like Christmas"
me: " but it's not necessarily religious. For example, 'with the advents of steel production and the steam engine, came the Industrial Revolution' "

A massive alcohol-fuelled argument ensued, the game was packed away and everyone went to bed.

The next day my mum bought a 'scrabble words' book.
ADVENTS was in it.
The book was chucked to avoid any repercussions, and THAT Christmas was never spoken about.

Goals scored in the box

While watching MOTD a stat flashed up they we have scored 10 of our premier league goals from outside the box this season. We have have also scored 4 penalties. This means only 4 of our 18 league goals have been scored inside the box and are not a penalty. I thought that was a pretty amazing stat and really highlights our lack of scoring forward.

Roy - tactical genius

I posted this in the daftly named 'Hodgson Out' thread with SG's approval - and Simon has suggested that it might justify a thread of its own. I agree. It amazes me that there are still some who doubt Roy's tactical brilliance. For those few, they should note the following from Simon Gleave (Head of Analysis at To view the link you have to Register or Login) -

"Looking at the quality and frequency of the opportunities Manchester City had, these tactics from Palace reduced City's expected goals (yes, I know it isn't perfect) to the lowest level it has been in any match this season, home or away. Obviously if you can do this, you increase your chance of winning massively.

A draw was probably the most likely result when looking at chances but if we assume Palace had about a 4% to 5% chance of winning this before the match started, these tactics probably increased that to something like 25-30% which is some difference.

Palace have also done this twice now so it is not luck that Hodgson has managed to reduce the firepower that City have with his tactics. Manchester City's lowest expected goals for a match under Pep Guardiola are:

Liverpool (A) 2016/2017 L 0-1
Burnley (H) 2016/2017 W 2-1
Palace (A) 2017/2018 D 0-0
Stoke City (H) 2016/2017 D 0-0
Chelsea (A) 2017/2018 W 1-0
Huddersfield (H) 2017/2018 D 0-0
Everton (A) 2016/2017 L 0-4
Chelsea (H) 2017/2018 W 1-0
Southampton (A) 2017/2018 W 1-0
Palace (H) 2018/2019 L 2-3
Arsenal (A) 2016/2017 D 2-2
Liverpool (A) 2018/2019 D 0-0
"

Our record against the ‘Big 6’ since promotion

Yesterday’s win against Man City got me thinking about our record against the so-called ‘Big 6’ in the league since promotion.

Off the top of my head, our record so far is:

Man City - Home & Away wins
Man Utd - Draw Away
Liverpool - 3 Away wins
Arsenal - Home win & Home draw
Chelsea - 2 Home wins & 2 Away wins
Spurs - Draw Away

I’m can’t remember the exact scores for some and I’m sure I’ve missed a win or draw as well.

Can anyone give us the exact record?

Suggestion: Joe Aribo

22 year old midfielder at Charlton. His contract is expiring at the end of the season but is supposedly favouring a move to Germany. Would we be able to entice him here remaining local and getting a good chance of first team football?

I feel these are the type of players we should be busting a gut to get. Looking at the list of good youngsters Charlton have let go in recent years like Lookman and Konsa.

Furthermore you have the likes of Maja and Yearwood available too who'd be good options for the future. I don't understand why we don't try and sign these players now instead of in five years time as their fees inflate.

This is why I love football

Travelled up to Manchester without hope - almost out of duty. Expected the same thumping we always get. Resigned to it, especially when they scored.

To turn it around and win, and in the manner that we did, is why I love football and why I love Palace. I can forgive the debacle at the Amex, Pardew’s ineptness as Swansea, even losing 5-0 at lunchtime at Wigan - for moments like today.

What a result, and what a bunch of fans to share it with! Everyone around me a true Palace fan and loving it.

comedians who became all serious

I was listening to an old interview with Sir Ken Dodd on radio today. Funny man, even into his 90's.

Then I recalled some classic comedy of my childhood.
The Goons. Spike Milligan became an eco-warrior in his spare time. I recall him assisting cleaning a village pond with other volunteers, and then grabbing a passing cyclist and shaming him into helping.

Harry Secombe went all religious. Singing on 'Songs of Praise' in the twilight of his career.

And Bill Oddie. He was the funniest of the Goodies, in my opinion. (the others were too educated for a child like me). He is the most obnoxious/serious person when discussing birdlife in the meeja.
Lost my fondness of him some time ago.
I would love to kill a seagull , right in front of Bill Oddie, just to see him go mental. (although killing seagulls is a criminal offence). Or smash loads of rare birds eggs.

Rumour: Wickham for Assombalonga

dimanche 16 décembre 2018

Could be a load of crap, dont shoot the messenger, also mentions Sunderland also asking about Wickham

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:

Sunderland have enquired about the potential return of Connor Wickham, but face major rivals in Middlesbrough for the striker, we can reveal.

The promotion-chasing Black Cats are after more firepower and, as we revealed earlier on Sunday, were also rebuffed in approach for another ex-forward in Jermain Defoe.

Crystal Palace frontman Wickham, who has made just one Premier League appearance this season, has been constantly plagued by injury issues but that does not appear to have to have put off the north east duo.

Boro are looking to re-shape their strike-force in January and have asked about Wickham, as Palace have enquired about Britt Assombalonga – who could be on the move, and the two clubs have discussed a potential swap deal.

Since promotion to the Premier League in 2013, CPFC has not managed to score away at Manchester City.

2013-14: 1-0
2014-15: 3-0
2015-16: 4-0
2016-17: 5-0
2017-18: 5-0

Five seasons: 18-0

I cannot see this changing on Saturday, but 0-0 would be a magnificent achievement.

Suggestion: Sebastian Haller

Saw this guy play a few times for Utrecht before he moved to Frankfurt and he looks a good player. 24 year old French target man striker has scored 12 from 22 already in the Bundesliga and Europa league combined this season. I think he was suggested before he joined Frankfurt (for 7m half a year before we signed Sorloth for 10m) and IMO we missed out. Newcastle are reportedly keen and he’s made a few noises about a possibility of moving to England. No idea what he would actually cost but I think we all agree a striker is priority.

A trip to the Palace

Fair play to Palace no complaints from me about the result......as always when i'm out and about in South London all the Palace i met were decentt and level headed......respect to the stewards who are decent and dint throw me out today but escorted me from the Arthur and back into the away end after i'd got bored and went walkabouts...:D

Has your kettle ever caught fire?

Mine nearly did last night. I'm convinced it was well on its' way. It's a Breville VKJ952 that I bought from Argos earlier this year.

It's given me no problems until now, and it was a bit of a shock when I realied that the base was starting to burn. Luckily I noticed it quickly and switched it off at the mains. There were 6 charred black marks in both the base of the kettle and the cordless base, where the contacts were between the kettle and the base.

I'm buying a Bosch to replace it, in the hope that the Bosch will be less likely to combust. Not sure what to do with the Breville.

Searching, I found this thread from 2004 reporting similar problems:

Dealing with a terminal illness

My wife's just been diagnosed with a terminal illness. She's only 52, a nothing age, but having just had major surgery for bowel cancer, they have also diagnosed liver cancer. Shes probably got 12 months at the most, chemotherapy, which she starts in January hopefully buys us another year.

I'm not seeking pity or sympathy, just wondering if there is anyone else out there who had coped with a similar situation, who could offer me their experience, practical advice or guidance.

Ps she's not a Palace fan as such, but is a member, just a Norfolk girl who has travelled with me to about 25-30 games over the past 9 years, enjoying the atmosphere and sense of tribalism away from home.

Would you like to participate in a Yellow vest protest in the UK

Given the success of the movement in France and its spread to Belgium and Holland etc . Would you participate in this country if one was organised ?
The agenda would be to roll back unfair austerity for all and tax the rich more as it is in France .

Do you believe in god?

Although the UK is becoming more and more atheist and agnostic, globally those believing in god is apparently stabilising or even increasing and is around 85%.

Quote:

Research also estimates that the percentage of religiously unaffiliated people is expected to decline from the current 16% to about 13% even if the overall number of such folks will rise from 1.17 billion in 2015 to 1.2 billion in 2060. In contrast, the number of religious people is expected to grow to 8.1 billion by 2050.
I find this staggering in the 21st century that so many hang on to a medieval belief system. But I guess as Marx said religion isn't just the opium of the masses, but also flowers in the chains of oppression. Still I thought we would have moved on by now.

Free home shirt for someone this Christmas

Mods, please move if this is in the wrong place.

Inspired by some very kind people in the ticket forum To view the link you have to Register or Login (and let's be honest, we need some cheer due to both on-field and off-field matters this year...), I have a medium men's 2018-19 home shirt going for free to anyone who would like it for themselves or a fellow fan this Christmas, and who perhaps is struggling for £££. It's in impeccable condition, only having been worn once for two hours.

It will be posted in time for Christmas. PM if you are interested.

Please note: the medium men's shirt this year is equivalent to a men's small (despite what the club says). I bought the shirt at the start of the season and found it quite tight even though I'm a Slim Jim, but kept hold of it. Bought a large in the Black Friday sales and so now have the medium to give away. Cheers guys.

2019 World Darts Championship

It starts tonight and goes on until the final on New Years Day.

A new format for this year as 96 players are involved. The top 32 players in the rankings are seeded and start in round 2 while the other 64 take part in round 1.

For the first few days each session will have three first round matches and then one from the second round.

If the seedings go to plan Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson will play in the semi final. If that match does happen I think the winner will then go on to be the champion. Rob Cross hasn't been in good form and I can't see him defending the title.

Suggestion: Michy Batshuayi

Apparently Valencia want to cancel his loan from Chelsea, meaning he could be available again in January.

3 in 18 for them, so not great by any means, but we're desperate and I reckon he could suit our system.

Old Coulsdon

Used to live here as a boy, now moved back. I'm early 40s, who grew up here in the 80s and 90s.

I've only met with a few people from Purley Boys and I wouldn't mind seeing who else went there.

Obviously knew lots of Palace fans growing up so possibly on here.

Thanks.

Now May is (almost) toast, who would you want to take over?

I really dislike Liverpool. Praying for a Napoli goal.

Wan Bissaka as Striker

well we're desperately looking for a striker, why not just play AWB as a striker? he's been so good at right back and obviously has a lot of natural talent, so surely he'll be able to adapt? plus Joel Ward good player to come in at full back so wouldn't disrupt the team too much.

surely this is the answer to our problems, he could be the next Harry Kane

Current league table looks good for us also.

And you lot ?

Bit of cladding, some photos of what your new stand MIGHT look like. Massive wage bill, mice droppings and a team where a striker hasn't a single goal between them. Not forgetting getting destroyed by your rivals with 10 men.

No Trains To Palace On Boxing Day For The Cardiff Game

It would appear that there are no trains to and from London via Selhurst or Norwood Junction on Boxing Day due to Engineering Works.

Disabled parking in and around Selhurst.

On boxing day I'm bring my Mum to Selhurst for the first time since she became disabled. Not having previously looked at this, where is best for blue badge holders to park close to the ground?

I've long given up driving to Selhurst and choosing the train instead because of the sheer amount of traffic these days and lack of parking.

TIA :)

Clubs not annoucing the team.

At West Ham they have done what I have noticed at other clubs (Arsenal) that they dont read the away team out or if they do it’s ages before the start of the match. Also they dont state who scored if it was an away player.

This is just classless, especially when West Ham dont even own their own stadium. Ive only noticed this recently. Part of being a host is being hospitable, leave the bitterness out and do the talking on the field. At Chelsea and Tottenham which I happen to think is too far they make the away concourse personilsed in Palace colours and have unfortuate workers having to wear a different team every week haha.

Suggestion: Jô (CF- Nagoya Grampus Eight- 31 yrs old)

lundi 10 décembre 2018

Currently is playing for Nagoya Grampus Eight in Japan, said in FourFourTwo that he would be interested in a move back to England, and we were linked with him last year. Has Premier League experience and has banged in goals everywhere he has been except for Man City. At 31, maybe he could be a veteran influence for our younger strikers like Sørloth and Daly.

Bet Final Positions in PL

So, as a developer i've worked for a while on a hobby project where you bet on each teams final position.
You get 1 error for each position you are off (so, bet Crystal P at position 10 and they end up at 9 gives 1 error, etc).
The winner is simply the one with least amount of errors.

Recently i made it so anyone can create their own competition and choose by a tons of available leagues, including PL.
Been trying it out with a few friends so far but nothing fancy. Thought it would be fun to see how it works with more people placing bets.

So anyone up for a cpfc.org competition? Usually this would of course be done pre season but i see no problems in doing it half way through. Might even be more fun considering you can judge each team by their performance so far rather than just look at their current league position.

Its free obviously, and no commercial or whatever, just for fun.

Suggestion: Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Club shop online purchases

I ordered some bits as Chrismas presents online, 7 days ago. As they hadn't appeared yet I sent an email to check. To be fair I received an instant reply and apology and was told due to the 'Chrismas rush' orders were taking extra days to process and send. So if you are buying online and want it before Christmas be aware it could be well over a week to send out.

Suggestion: Gaetan Laborde (CF/W, HSC Montpellier, 24 yrs old)

We were linked with him last January and he seems to be tearing it up in Ligue 1 with 7 goals and 1 assist in 14 top flight matches. Also has UEL experience so he has played in big games. I think he'd be a good signing and he has experience playing as a winger as well.

What position would you trust a rookie in?

I have had a theory for a long time that the 'easiest' position for a rookie to fill in the Premier League is winger. Why?

Generally speaking a winger is a speedy and unpredictable player. Someone who youthful exuberance and naivety of youth is a good thing.

Least trustworthy in my book would be a fullback. Of course AWB has blown that theory to pieces.

My point is that if the first part of my theory was correct then bringing through younger wingers are less risky than any other position.

This is a long winded way of saying shouldn't we give Kaikai a try?

Premier League’s biggest bottlers

We’ve basically bottled it in the last couple of games.

All heads went down at Brighton.
Tomkins lost the plot in both matches.
The team look like they can’t come back from any set-back - Pardewesque.

We used to take the piss out of Brighton bottling it every year. Now it looks like us.

Positives to be taken from the suspensions for next week

For me Kelly is better than most here think and is always ready and hard as nails .... He will be Captain next season if we go down this year!

Another chance and please take it for the squad to prove, the only with Wilf winning scenario wrong!

Bring it on! :lux:

The Championship

Anyone else keeping one eye on the Championship ( EFL on Quest ) some decent teams / players , playing some great football , and place we could very soon find ourselves , some massive clus in the Championship and probably the most competitive league in world football , a bloody tough league to get yourselves out of , at the right end that is .

Discussion: what we need to do in the January transfer window

We need to sign at least 2 players that will have an immediate impact on the first team , it's stating the bleeding obvious but we desperately need a striker that is currently hitting the back of the net , could be from abroad, the championship or even a gamble on a player further down the league as long as he is currently hitting the goals ,
Secondly we need goals from midfield ( Bradley Dack at Blackburn has around 25 goals from around 55 games ) not sure if we could prise him away but he is what we need .
Not sure what we will get ( our recruitment team don't fill me with hope ) but they should be working their arses off to bring in at least 2 players in these positions
Of course what we want and what we get are 2 different things but we can't sit back and do nothing .

Zero alcohol limit in Ireland

In case any of you are going over Christmas and the New Year, zero limit for drink driving now in place. Oddly car hire did not mention it and I have not seen it in the usual press and TV coverage. My brother told me after I had two pints on way to see the mother and I was driving.

Chris Kamara - get him in

We need a motivator and I absolutely love kamara’s passion. He is exactly what we need. Speaks sense and knows his stuff. People forget he is a manager .

cometh the hour cometh the kammy....

Arsenal FC. The first club to have three players booked for simulation in the same ga

Absolutely disgraceful.

Sakho should be given the captaincy

I think this side still lacks leadership. The captaincy has affected Luka's form. Should he even be an automatic pick? Give it to Sakho. He at least talks. He's the soldier. Let's see it.

We have always been.....

A championship side at best, currently punching above its weight for the 6th successive season in the premiership.

If we go down, so what? It's what we do.

Stop the point fingering, the vitriol, blaming everyone from Parish, to Roy, feel free to criticise performance but accusing players of not caring? Really?

The sad fact of relegation eventually happens when you follow this team.

Continue to support the team through thick and thin. If it's our season to eventually drop, so be it, we'll come again, we always do.

Let's not fall apart in the interim

Forever Palace

How long has Roy got?

When will Parish lose patience with Roy?

Remaining 4 games in December.

I truly believe that the 2 home games against Leicester and Cardiff have now become even more crucial.
Hopefully the players can use the memory of overwhelming Leicester at home last Season.
We must believe that we can beat Neil Warnock and his side and give us all an extra Christmas present.
Manchester City game I suppose will have to be assumed as a free hit. Perhaps the early kick-off on a Sunday against Chelsea may be a potential bonus.
Let's all pull together at Selhurst even more than usual this coming Saturday !
I know that I will be behind Palace 100%

"The problem with football matches is you need to win them"

...Roy to the BBC tonight. Seems like a fair assessment to me.

He is starting to sound a bit like that final press conference with England.

Tomkins booked after game - misses Leicester?

Had a go at the ref about the free kick. Got booked. Stupid.

Are we skint? - Why are we skint?

We spent next to nothing on his last 2 windows and recently Roy hinted that we should not expect much this Jan either.

Now I know we spent a lot on Benteke and Sakho and Sam spent 40 million in his window... But does anyone else wonder why with so much TV money we are currently in this predicament?

Is it all down to wages?

Are we clobbered by FFP? Have the Americans (billionaires) tried to stop the spending?

Anyone know what's going on...?:confused:

Cheese please. The cheese appreciation thread

I have seen on some other threads we seem to have quite a few cheese lovers on the board. With this in mind I thought I would start a cheesy comestibles thread of your favourites.

I love a very mature cheddar or a Stilton, Cornish blue is also rather tasty. For the Christmas period I also have a few truckles of snowdonia cheese.

Also feel free to post what other foods you enjoy with your cheese. I have come to the opinion that all other food is just a conduit for cheese.

Team for Leicester

No Tomkins or Zaha due to suspension... Squad is thin as it is - but who do you think we’ll see as a starting XI next weekend?

Bournemouth v Liverpool kicking things off

The 7 year itch

vendredi 7 décembre 2018

For a club of our size, does staying in the Premier League become more difficult with each passing year? Common sense would dictate that it's a no. Year after year without relegation, the amount of money coming into the bank is obscenely high and so it helps you maintain your status. So why do I question this logic?

For a start, clubs of a similarish size to us that hang around in this league for longer than a season or two often never really become established. Bolton, Stoke, Swansea, Wigan, all had fairly lengthy recent spells in top flight but they also never really established themselves.

I think the biggest issue actually comes from the increase in money and the difficulty of managing it. Agents exploit this and clubs end up overpaying for bang average players. But the real key here is that the longer you stay up, the worse it can become.

After first getting promoted, a club might end up with a couple of good signings, and one or two wasters that are simply there for the cash and nothing else. As time goes on without relegation, you end up buying more of these. Then after a couple of seasons your half decent but not amazing right back that was part of your promotion team understandably asks for a wage increase, in-line with what his new non-amazing colleagues are getting. The club know that he's probably not really worth the wage he's asked for, but equally, finding a replacement for him that will require a transfer fee and will have an ageny demanding similar wages anyway, means that the club end up paying Mr Average way over the odds.

And this keeps continuing until a club of our size, despite the Premier League millions, just stretches itself until it falls apart.

Of course, a decent scouting system with a good recruitment policy, a proper youth academy, and careful management of finances helps massively in keeping clubs afloat. But in general, does it jusg become more difficult as time goes on, or am I chatting bollocks?

Working in a Hospital

Over the last couple of years my wife has spent some time in the hospital here and there. During my visits to her, I am continually impressed by how everyone working in them seems happy, friendly to one another, have good banter and give a general impression of enjoying their job. A gross generalization I know, but my observation none the less.

I suspect there are arseholes (especially doctors and administrative managers) there, just like everywhere (my wife worked in hospitals for 30+ years and can vouch for that), but the people in the trenches always seem to have a great team ethic and camaraderie.

I bring this up because working in Engineering for 45 years, and these traits are not the first thing that comes to mind. There was always to many deadlines, stress, back stabbing, management by fear, and interdepartmental isolation. Although friendships developed, the general feeling was never anywhere I worked close to what I see in the hospital environment. Especially over the last 20 years.

My question is, a) anyone work in a hospital that can dispute or confirm my observation, and b) anyone work in an environment that they feel is either like the hospital, or more like my life in engineering?

I think one factor maybe that generally the workers in a hospital are younger and have not been soured yet by the rigors of a long working life. I know where I worked I was told that 65% of the employees were over 55… too many grumpy old men (me included).

Good pubs in London to watch Liverpool Bournemouth

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Squad Depth

Just been listening to RH comments after last nights defeat . Question was did he think of making changes at half time ? RH said if he thought that there were players on bench that could turn the game round he would have . Went on to say that the substitutions didn't really make any difference . Also said that everybody knows we have not got the type of players who can come on and change a game .
Personally I would have brought on Sorloth and Ayew . Brighton were obviously going to sit back in 2nd half and maybe 2 forwards in box may have given us a chance .
However what does that really mean for Sorloth and Ayew . Also Riedawald , Williams , KaiKai and Puncheon - is it a message to all of them ?
A few weeks ago , I did hear Roy say that we had quality strikers on the bench in Sorloth and Ayew ? - not sure he believes that . One thing for sure is that it looks like we need quite a change round in Personnel at end of season .

I'm already over it

Yeah, it hurt like crazy today but now I'm over it. On reflection it was a very bad night at the office, just annoying it had to be against THAT lot. A very dodgy penalty for the first started the rot, the 1st goal was always going to be massive, then for the 2nd the substitute came on and caught us off guard, no one obviously knew who was marking him which was poor from our part. Luka had a great chance at 2-0, if that had gone in I'm convinced it would have been a different story, 2-1 at HT against 10 men, they would have s*** themselves, I believe we could have even gone on to get the win. Small margins in football etc.

The thing that grated me most last night is that the Scum fans will all think they're better than us now. Well they are not, we posses way more talent in our ranks, both sides know that deep down, they just have a manager that gets them super organised and they seem to be getting all the important ref decisions this season.

Bring on March 9th, the only way to right this wrong is to get revenge at Selhurst. I'm pretty sure everyone will be fired up to put right what went hapoened last night. As fans we need to stick together now, this is how Palace do things, we should all know that by now.

Hands Up...

...any club that's beaten their rival by five goals to nil.

They deserved their win and can bask in the glory, but they’re still and awful deluded club.

Sorloth v Andrew...Who is $h1tter?

For me it’s Sorloth, I don’t think I’ve seen a less effective striker in my years of watching Palace. He offers nothing, absolutely nothing.

I've been at livelier autopsy's...

...than the Amex. Just back from the game which was, I have to say, truly bloody awful. We were utterly poor from A-Z tonight, something which is being well covered on other threads.

But I just wanted to point out that for a side which spent a huge portion of the game 2/3-0 up against its biggest rivals, the lack of atmosphere at the Amex tonight was truly astonishing. The occasional half-hearted chorus of 'Albion, Albion', and genuinely nothing else for 90 mins.

We may have been dreadful on pitch tonight, but the half-baked atmosphere at that plastic cauldron in tandem with the fact that only about 5 of them turned up for our FA Cup game in January hasn't half made me glad to support a club nothing like theirs.

COYP.

Rumour: Junior Firpo - Real Betis

First I have heard of this but linked to Junior Firpo of Real Betis in this article. Inclined to file it under bullshit as he has been linked to much bigger clubs than us and Newcastle recently, and with PVA, Schlupp and Souare still on the books we really don't have space for yet another LB / LWB / LM in my opinion.

A FAMOUS NIGHT UNDER THE FLOODLIGHTS AT THE AMEX

And we only needed 10 men. Gave your lot a footballing lesson tonight.

That 3rd goal ? I never screamed so much. WOW. I had to be restrained by stewards as i was going absolute fooking nuts.

As for your fans they were a total joke tonight. Virtually silent lol.

Anyway i enjoyed that one and i'm glad to be back. :lux:

Not having at least two strikers worthy of this division.

It's shocking.

12 months later and the manager only has a rookie from the Danish league. It's totally and completely unacceptable for our club to have such a lack of depth.

Our manager has no option but to play two wingers up front and then bring on a kid who will never be good enough.

Steve Parish and the owners rolled the dice again on the sun not coming up, and it came up. Benteke injured again. This is the thing that bothers me beyond anything. How have we left one of, if not the most important position, totally vacant.

It's negligence. It's tinpot mismanagement

When was the last time we played well with ten men?

I can’t remember a time in the PL - some notable occasions where we’ve played badly.

Our defending is atrocious

Three more goals to add to the pretty long ‘easily preventable’ list for this season.

Our fans tonight
