Best small family car?

Any suggestions? Safety for the little one obviously most important.

I’ve looked at a Volkswagen Polo and a Mini 5-door hatch. I won’t be driving it but thought a mini might be a more fun car.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

I’ll be getting it second hand whatever it is.
