Kaliningrad advice/information

Hi all

Has anyone been to Kaliningrad?

Looking for advice on/info re best ways to travel there, plane or car or bus?

Visa/car insurance advice/issues?

Attitude to foreigners from police/locals?

Recommended places to stay?

Place to visit?

I will likely be travelling with some mates, with our initial view to fly to Riga, driving to Kaliningrad. I am seeing issues with this strategy based upon border delays/bribes, hire car drop-off, green-card car insurance to be purchased in Poland/Lithuania, driving in a foreign hire-car etc and anything else I am unaware of.
