Advice on travelling to Rome

Dear BBS, I've never been to Rome, never been to Italy tbf, but I'm planning a trip in August to see the sights. I've read that there are rough areas that tourists should avoid but it seems pretty mixed so if I can get some advice from those who have experience that would be great.

4 adults, no car so we need to walk everywhere or use public transport, planning on booking flights + hotel
