Last night Julian was the guest of a local Church, being interviewed on his career and how his Christian faith has supported him. The interview lasted about 45mins and he then undertook a Q&A from the audience and a lengthy photo/autograph session.
I was invited along by my mate as a Palace fan. It was a great evening at Purley Sports Club over a curry and a few pints listening to Jules. If we didn't realise already, we are lucky to have had such a good bloke serve our club. Seemed genuine and has a good sense of humour.
Some views were;
Tricky to pin down one single memorable game but Hillsborough and recent play-off finals were key and remain in his mind.
Warnock was the most influential Manager at Palace, really understanding how to motivate and man-manage.
Removing cheating from the game was considered nigh on impossible, too much money involved. The game needs more players who want to win in the 'right manner'.
Suarez and Drogba the best strikers he's faced. He remains impressed at Drogba's performance in the 0-2 loss after promotion before last. A beast of a player.
His professionalism was key in ensuring he was ready to re-stake his claim for the no.1 position after his dreadful debut and subsequent loss of place to Gabor Kiraly. Too many players of superior ability fall by the wayside because they are not professional.
He is happy when Hennessey makes a mistake (it was a joke).
He wants to continue playing for the next 2-5 years and although extremely unlikely, represent his country at full-level.
He was presented with a gift (which transpired to be a book of Palace newspaper cuttings throughout our history). The chap presenting it was a Chelsea fan who quipped it was a collection of Chelsea programmes, to which Julian responded with 'Good, I need something to light my fire with'. :p
Other God related stuff was discussed within a football context but these were the main Palace takeaways.
