Connor Wickham: how does he fit into our side?

lundi 15 février 2016

There are lots of threads moaning about Pardew etc. I'm not going to join in. Although I think things will get worse before they get better because it'll take a while for Bolasie (and Sako) to get up to speed, and we have a hard run of games from March onwards, I think we will be ok in the end.

But I would like to talk about Connor Wickham. Another assist on Saturday despite being played on the wing. He has barely had a run of games, but despite this IMHO has been one of our best attackers. In fact, other than Bolasie and Zaha he has been miles ahead of the others who've been here all season - Mutch, CYL, Gayle, Chamakh and Campbell for instance pale into comparison with the contribution CW has made. He held it up and allowed us to play. He is strong on the ball, decent in the air, can pass the ball and works hard. Plus he has 3 assists, can cross the ball and has hardly been missing sitters every week. Indeed he could have had 4 or 5 but for world class saves and the post. 'Influential' is a word I would use for him.

Now EA is here, however, his place looks in jeopardy. It's self-evident he is no winger, and luckily for us Bolasie and Sako are back so it is a moot point. But where does Wickham fit in? Will he displace EA? Very unlikely considering the respective goalscoring records, and EA looked good in open play in the 2nd half vs Watford as well. So do we play 2 up front? Or Can EA or CW play in the No10 position? They may both be big lads but I would have thought, with pace on both wings, that there should be a place for EA and CW. Interested to hear people's thoughts. With JM and JP injured, MC out of favour and JM and CYL displaying patchy form, surely it's time to try CW in a withdrawn striker/No10 role? He's a better footballer with more attributes than those who have been tried there. Couldn't believe CW was withdrawn before JM at half time despite the latter's better 2nd half showing.
