One hundred years ago this afternoon, at 14.10/ 2.10 pm, the RMS Lusitania was torpedoed, by the German U Boat U20, 10 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale, Co. Cork.
She sank in less than 18 minutes and by 2.28pm, 1,198 of the 1,962 on board had perished, which included 94 babies and children.
Amongst the fatalities were 128 U.S citizens, including one of the world's richest men, Alfred Vanderbilt who, three years earlier had, at the last minute, cancelled his ticket aboard the Titanic.
However, despite all of the human tragedy, the sinking of the Lusitania will best be remembered as the catalyst which triggered Americas entry into World War 1 with many conspiracy stories emerging, which include, Churchill deliberately withholding British intelligence of the forthcoming attack and the Lusitania (a passenger ship) being covertly used as an arms transporter.
