Jon Cruddas said his party lost because it focused on "micro policies" and now needed to fundamentally rethink who it is for and what it represents.
In an interview with Radio 4's The World This Weekend, he said Labour had experienced its worst-ever defeat.
Mr Cruddas urged the party to conduct a "cold dissection" of the result.
'Profound' defeat
The Dagenham MP, who helped write Labour's election manifesto, said: "Arguably, it's one of the great crises of the Labour Party's history.
"I argued that the 2010 defeat was actually the worst defeat in Labour history since 1918, and the defeat of 10 days ago was much worse - so this is profound."
He said the party needs to embark on a "journey of self discovery" as voters no longer know what it stands for.
