The 98th Giro Italia starts on Saturday 9 May in San Lorenzo al Mare with a flattish Team Time Trial heading to San Remo. Sadly the opening stage misses out the usual cycling entrance to the town via the Poggio and sticks to a flat route along the coast. The next three weeks will see the riders head south before returning north for the final week in the Alps.
After the time trial there are a couple of stages for the sprinters, followed by a lumpy stage into La Spezia . If that doesn’t see some sorting out of the General Classification, Stage 5 certainly will – it is the first mountain top finish to Abetone.
The next week or so is a mixture of flat and undulating stages, interspersed with a tough second weekend – with the second mountain top finish at Campitello Matese on Stage 8.
The race will liven up with a tough 60 km ITT in stage 14, and after than it is predominantly the mountains. The Cima Coppi of Giro d’Italia 2015 comes on the penultimate day of racing at the top of Colle delle Finestre. The stage finishes on Sestriere, which serves as the last chance for the riders to improve their position in the general classification with the race finishing on a flat run into Milan
As for the favourites – it is hard to see beyond Contador, who is at evens with some bookies, in his attempt to do a Giro and Tour de France double. Other riders fancying their chances will be Ritchie Porte, freed of domestique duties for once in a Grand Tour, along with Rigoberto Uran and home favourite Fabio Aru.
As for the sprinters, there are perhaps more stages than in the recent past that could end in sprint finishes, but this hasn’t enticed many of the top sprinters to make the trip - but expect the likes of Matthews, Griepel, Lobato, Viviani and Hofland to feature on the stage podiums.
